A dark souls game without Miyazaki is not a dark souls game. Dark souls II lack everything that the first 2 souls game had. Intresting story telling hidden in item descrips, u have it but its borring AF. Characters that you actualy care about? Nope, none. Anything connected to the past souls game or the souls universe? you have an Onsteing reskin and you're good to go thx for the 60 euro. Sticking to the core Souls rules that made the game chalangeing but rewarding? Nope GL levelling 6 different atributes just to be able to play the game. And now where the game fails, you used to past souls game dodgeing? TO BAD, LEVEL UP YOUR ♥♥♥♥♥ RESISTANCE (Adaptability) TO BE ABLE TO DODGE ENEMY ATTACKS! I trueli dont understand how can someone enjoy this, I played Dark souls I and Demons Souls, so I think I can safetly say, this is not a dark souls game, dont let the title fool you. Shame on frost soft that the cant make a game without Miyazaki, at least Bloodborn is rly good. To bad that DS II had to be ruined for this.

Beautiful game, fantastic gameplay just like the rest of the dark soul series.
Responsiveness is better than in dark souls 1. Only negative point is that the world feels very big and seperate while in dark souls 1 the world felt more whole, connecting place to place. Teleporting through the bonfires from the beginning is a nice change.

completely and unabashedly artificially difficult. this is a game enjoyed only by pretentious teengaers who's only sense of accomplishment in life is beating a difficult game. take my advice, if you kids spent half of the time you spent on this game trying to increase the size of you're e-weiner, you would have graduated collage.

I get why the scholar of the first sin eddition released, but it really shouldn't have been a different game. All it did was devide the community in half, and screw over the people who baught the game early. Just buy the Scholar of the first sin eddition if you really want this game.

The much maligned middle child of the series. It isn't as good as the first one, or the third one, but is it worth playing? Yes. The issue of it being a "bad game" comes from it being compared to the first. It does have its own flaws, like bland environmental design and overall mediocre bosses (with a couple of exceptions), but the level design in general is fine and the enemies are varied and enjoyable. I haven't had the chance to play through the Scholar of The First Sin edition as of yet, which I hear makes it on par with the first one, but even then it's still enjoyable enough to play through.

Please remember: Choose the Petrified Something.

Great game well worth it on sale. Dark Souls 1 is for me still unmatched in atmosphere, but the mechanics and graphics have came a long way. Definetly a must before moving on to Dark Souls 3.

So a little insight on the world of Dark Souls 2. You begin the game with little to nothing and learn your way through twist turns and many perils. After figuring out what the heck you're doing you realize, "This is pretty easy!!" then you walk through that misty gate and Dark Souls 2 reminds you that you are worthless. All the work you just put into that area is gone like the blink of an eye! All in all, it's probably the best game you could ever invest your time into! DEFINTELY recommend!

Dark Souls II is a sequel to the cult classic Dark Souls game and it unfortunately lacks every subtlety that made the first game such an intoxicating experience. To explain these subtleties would be to ruin what makes the discovery process so fun, but I will respond to anyone who wishes to know what I think in a personal Steam message.

As a story telling experience, it lacks the reason to be it's own story (The DLC sort of corrects this problem.) As a combat experience, it lacks the tight mechanics that made the first one fair and engaging. The hitboxes are not as the appear at all, there is input lag on movement, and a well-designed mechanic -- rolling -- is hidden behind a stat called "Adaptation." Its level design is good, but lacks the metroid-vania style *world* design that makes it replayable. The game feels nearly as linear as a game like Darksiders does. Forgettable bosses that are just 2/3rds big armoured people with formulaic attack patterns. Dark Souls II is a pretty good Souls-*like* but pales in comparison to its predecessor. I couldn't, with good concsious, reccomend anyone looking to understand what souls is *about* by reccomending this game.

As a personal aside to establish what my opinion might, or might not, mean to a review reader, I purchased the original Dark Souls four times. Once on console, twice more for friends looking to get into the game, and once on PC. I pre-purchased the deluxe edition of Dark Souls II on console and afterwards the PC version. With collectively 700+ hours into the souls series (1, 2, 3 and Bloodbourne) I still don't reccomend Dark Souls II. I would reccomend Dark Souls II *last* if you want to know what Souls is about.

May the flames guide you.

A good, if somewhat disappointing follow-up to what is arguably one of the best RPG's of all time. Gameplay has been improved combat wise, save for death penalties, lifegems, and some added stats that did more harm than good. The world here felt mainly uninspired and wasn't intertwined with clever shortcuts that many loved about the original. Boss battles were overall disappointing due to their mostly low difficulty and bland designs, except for a few sprinkled around the game. DLC was overall better than the base game with better areas, but the bosses were still disappointing.
It's still a great RPG, just not the best Dark Souls game. If you want to get into the series, start with the original.

Is this better/worse than the original Dark Souls? I don't know yet; I'm planning to play every Souls game eventually when I get the time.

What I do know is that regardless of its comparisons between other Souls games, this game is still excellent, maintaining the wonderful core mechanics of the Souls games, having excellent New Game+ incentives, and just being excellently fun.

However, there are obviously flaws that even I can point out:

-VERY bad at giving the player direction. Often you'll have to find your next objective through guesswork or looking guides up on the internet.

-Obviously, hard. There are a few moments that can feel unfair, but often you can beat these bits by taking a different approach or in some cases doing a completely different, equally important objective, then come back once you've become more powerful.

-Multiplayer isn't what I'd consider "Dead", but it's nowhere near as lively as it was at launch, and Scholar of the First Sin doesn't help. SotFS revamped the entire game's enemy/item placement, but the original game and SotFS are incompatible in their multiplayer, completely splitting the community. Thankfully there's quite a few AI phantoms you can summon, and their colossal tankiness makes them excellent distractions while you heal up or whale on the bosses. Oh yeah, and don't worry; You can "be wary of message" all you want! message ahead therefore praise the sun!

-Bad lore and worldbuilding especially compared to what I've seen from the other Souls games. Even if the lore/worldbuilding was good, Souls games don't exactly fit into traditional storytelling, instead choosing to be as obscure as possible with the story, telling the backstory of the world through item descriptions and insinuations by the rare character you meet along the way. IMO this is a very entertaining and unique approach, but definitely not for everyone.

-Plenty of features that "Ruin" the PvP and so on in people's eyes. Don't get me wrong, PvP is always fun, it's just that actually encountering a player is a rarity outside of hotspots like Threshold Bridge. This goes WAY further than the problems I've mentioned earlier about multiplayer being partially dead. The features also ruin co-op; you can't help or hurt other players if the amount of souls you've collected isn't comparable to the amount they've collected, for example; this means you can't go back to early bosses like the Pursuer and help early players out with those if you've already beaten the game. Multiplayer features are great, but sadly due to these problems actually finding someone to invade/co-operate with is a rarity. Only on about 10% of bosses did I even see any summon signs for other players.

-Artificial difficulty. There aren't that many examples of this, and most examples are either manageable or completely optional, but I can't lie; I've never beaten Ancient Dragon purely because I find the fact all of his attacks will oneshot 90% of character builds utter ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥te. It's nowhere near as rampant as some salty hipsters may try to tell you Dark Souls is all about, but when you find it it is annoying, and the temptation to just cheese it with your crossbow will slowly grow more and more tempting.

-Some really easy bosses. Not an issue in the DLC, though, and some bosses in the main game did give me a challenge. There's none at the Pinwheel level of pathetic, but several bosses like Dragonrider, Royal Rat Vanguard and especially Prowling Magus/Congregation are pretty easy kills. For some, obviously, this may be a good thing; For players who want a bigger challenge, they can always join the Covenant of Champions or get the DLC which, in the tradition of Souls games, is always host to the most challenging fights in the game.

In summary, Dark Souls II may or may not be as good as it's predeccessor, (Primarily in terms of worldbuilding and plot) but that's no reason to dismiss it as a bad game. Play it if it seems like your thing!

It's an extremely challenging game (AND REWARDING) once you get past the point of understanding how the controls work. It's horribly broken. This is one of the few games that actually challenges you to play smart, regardless of equipment. It might the one of the worst console ports I have seen, but After 75 hours of play, I can say I started enjoying it once I could kind of control the buttons.
