This game is so hard... that you even have to buy it twice to get DX11.

Seriously though, don't buy this version.
Wait till April 2015 for the re-release.
And note, your saves won't transfer.

Great game. Unforunately, Bamco has decided to release the upcoming HD patch as a full-priced release very soon. There is literally zero reason to buy this game now. Unless you're okay with paying full price again for a patch a few months down the line, do not buy this game. Wait for the updated version and buy that instead.

Namco is deciding to re-release this game with updated graphics and multiplayer instead of just pushing it as an update so everyone who already put $80 into the game must re-purchase it just to get what is essentially an update. This is less than a year since it was released on pc. Do not buy this game or the rerelease. FRO< and Namco will ♥♥♥♥ you over too.

A new version of Dark Souls 2, supporting DirectX 11, is probably into development right now, it will basically add some minor improvements to the game, more specifically new graphics, but will ruin the online experience and give an slap in the face of every owner and fan of this game.

First, the developers never made a proper port for the PC version, if it was not for the "fixes" released by the modding community, both DSII and DS would be unplayable in the PC. The game was limited on PC due to console restrictions. Now they will be charging for the game again with graphics that many PC's could handle all along and on top of that, both PC versions wont be compatible therefore splitting the online community. Yes you heard that right;

Its not only the ones who will stick with the old version that will be prejudiced, those who will bought the DX 11 version will too. Why? Because basically this stupid decision will split up the DS2 PC community/players in half, perhaps even making the "better online matchmaking improvements" useless since there will be way less players now anyway.

Both versions of this game (this one and the future "improved" one) will be separated and if you own one of them, you wont be able to play with people that owns another version.

Not to mention that, just for minor tweaks, if you already own this game you will have to buy it AGAIN. The same game, AGAIN, in order to be able to perhaps enjoy the multiplayer.

If they released the new "version" as some sort of DLC, with a lower price, then fine, probably the majority of people would upgrade. But no, and the game is essencially the same.

Whatever if you own DSII or DS or even none of them by now, please denounce these developer/publisher practises.

There are some links, as some suggested, explaining the matter.

Quick update:

WATCH THE VIDEO!!! Of course comments of people who didnt even watch the source are being deleted. STOP SPREADING MISINFORMATION!!!!

DO NOT BUY!

"WARNING: A new "HD version" of this game has been announced. It will be an entirely separate game and include all DLC content. Most importantly, this "old" version (released May, 2014) WILL NOT update to the new version, which will be sold separately.

The new version of the game will contain new enemies, events, multiplayer enhancements, and graphical updates not available in this version of the game. Furthermore, the two versions of the game will not be compatible with each-other for online play, nor will saves be compatible between games.

It is worth noting a patch for the "old" version will include some of the new content, such as a new NPC and SOME of the new enemies and events. However, the remaining content will be exclusive to the new version.

Therefore, it is my recommendation you avoid purchasing this game, as the new version will arrive April, 2015. I also strongly encourage you to scrutinize the business practices exercized by the developer and publisher of this game. To make a very long story short, it is my opinion we are being sold the same game again with minor, though desirable improvements. In most circumstances, this would be called a support patch."

“For Dark Souls II, we don’t even expect any additional downloadable content because we want to deliver a full game, the full experience, to fans who purchase the package from day one,”

“We did do additional content for Dark Souls, but generally downloadable content for Dark Souls II is not really being considered. Buy the package and you’ll get the full experience, and you’ll have as much fun as anybody else.”

Quoted from IGN and Gamespot interviews. What we got instead was three DLC releases, a season pass, and now an "enhanced edition" which provides the DLC along with fixes and graphical improvements that most would have patched in for free.

Do not recommend, From Software not only charges 39.99 for this game before DLC, but will be rereleasing it in April 2015 with updated graphics and DX11 support as opposed to the current DX9 support. Those who buy this version (DX9) will not be able to play with those who buy the DX11 version, essentially splitting their player base in half between those who can afford to spend $60+ on the game for a second time, and those who can't or won't. Do not support these developers. This game is great, Dark Souls 1 is even better, and Demon Souls for PS3 is better still. From Software is a really talented group but their money grubbing tactics are throwing their fans under the bus by rereleasing a more complete game and requiring those who already purchased the game to buy it again if they want to receive updates and patches.

EDIT:
Here is my proof since some people can't be bothered to do the research themselves:

http://www.darksoulsii.com/us/news.1.php

And here is the direct quote from that page:

All versions of the game will include the following features (Existing Dark Souls II owners will receive a patch to implement these elements):

Additional NPCs added for an enhanced story experience.
Parameter adjustments for improved game balance.
Augmented item descriptions.
Improved online matchmaking functionality.

Xbox One, PS4, and DirectX 11 versions of the game will include the following features (in addition to those listed above):

Additional upgrades to graphics, sound, performance.
Increase in maximum online players in single session (6 total).

First and formost. I F###ING LOVE THIS GAME. Everything about the game itself is great.
It's not as difficult as dark souls 1 but this is a souls game and you can make it as difficult as you wish through the games own mechanics (I.E Use less armor, a bonfire estetic, or a weaker/non upgraded weapon)

However Namco Bandai and From Software have went all EA on us and decided the people who have already bought the game have no right to play the game's complete version. They are now pulling the single scummiest move of 2015 thus far and are re-releasing the game and charging owners of the original for content that has NO reason to not simply be patched in.

From Soft has spent the last year rebalancing the game, redoing item and enemy placement to make the game more challanging and fun. They feel that it is ok to withhold this rework of the game and not simply patch it into the existing game. They want to charge you again for a product you have already purchased. This is completly unacceptable.

Many people are complaining about the graphical update as well, this I honestly could not care less about. While it is true there is NO reason the game shouldnt have shipped with DirectX 11 support last year aside from making the rerelease that much more appealing further down the line, people who get upset over the graphical fidelity of a Souls game are missing the point of a souls game.

I played and still continue to play this game quite a bit. The game is very solid, but its very clear that the game has been missing something the previous souls games have had, real challange. So now from has finally decided to fix this issue and provide their players with the challange they expect from a souls game, and the message im getting is they feel the players who have supported their game and company from the release of this game dont deserve a real souls game. If we want to play what should have been shipped a year ago, we must purchase the game all over again. No thanks.

Alot of folks are claiming this is no different than a simple "GOTY edition" for this game. NO, not even close. The game has been drastically changed with the new edition, going as far as to split the playerbase into 2 pools for co-op and PVP. Every single aspect of the new version can and has been patched in. All the gameplay changes are 100% game code and a simple update would suffice. Even the new DirectX 11 API can be patched in no problem, hell even EA patched DX11 into Crysis 2, and we're talking about ♥♥♥♥ing EA here people... There is NO reason any of the new or changed content couldnt be added through simple patches.

Think of an MMO and how quickly and drastically they change even without expansion packs. This is no different and Fromsoft/Namco do NOT deserve money for what has been common practice since the ability to patch was created.

So Fromsoftware and Namco Bandai willingly released a ♥♥♥♥ poor version of their game, waited till everyone who would have bought the game paid for it, then doubled back and said "Wait wait, DS2 sucked at launch, if you want the REAL game you need to buy it again". This is EA and Ubisoft level BS (again EA has patched DirectX 11 into their games free of charge).

I highly suggest you refrain from buying the new edition of the game, lest you send the message that crap like this is acceptable. I for one will now go out of my way to ensure Namco Bandai and FromSoftware never see another dime of my money.

But if you need a souls fix I would suggest going for Dark Souls 1 or Demon's souls. Since not only are they superior games (Hidetaka Miyazaki the mind behind souls actually made these [had almost nothing to do with 2]), but you can also buy them used for ps3 or xbox and still ensure neither the developer or publisher gets revenue from the sale.

You guys done F*&^%D up.

WARNING: A new "HD version" of this game has been announced. It will be an entirely separate game and include all DLC content. Most importantly, this "old" version (released May, 2014) WILL NOT update to the new version, which will be sold separately.

Exclusive to the new version are re-mastered encounters, additional multiplayer slots, new invasion NPC with new items, improved enemy AI, and graphical updates not available in this "old" version of the game. Furthermore, the two versions of the game will not be compatible with each-other for online play, nor will saves be transferable between games.

A recent patch to prepare for the new re-release added changes to soul memory, a couple new items, and other tweaks to the "old" version of the game. The patch does not and will not contain the exclusive enhancements of the new version. If you want the exclusive content listed above, you will need to purchase the new version of the game.

No point in buying it now, From are soon going to make it available to buy again with updated graphics, a few new NPCs and 6 player online.

That's right, they're delivering what they originally promised in all the pre-release videos and ♥♥♥♥ and charging people for it. If you already own the game you will have to REBUY the game on PC to get it. ♥♥♥♥ From Software.

I deleted my old review because of something that happened in the meantime. Originally I recommended the game and liked it enough to get 100% achievements in it, even though it's not as good as DS1.

My current rating is because of absolutely detestable business practice by Bandai Namco, namely the upcoming reedition of DS2 titled Scholar of the First Sin. I could live with the graphical downgrade and some issues with the port, I was okay with DLCs coming out for DS2 (even though it was said there would be none), but releasing a new version completely incompatible with the old one - the old and new versions have separate multiplayer - with very little changes that should be either in a free patch or in the base game right from the start and demand full price for it, not even a full year after the original came out, is a slap in the face for the old customers.

The game itself is fun, but please, vote with your wallet and show Bamco this is not the way to go.
