[Historical] View from the Front: Market Garden

Much has been written about Operation Market Garden, normally following the exploits of the paratroopers, or trying to pin blame on why it failed. However as well as the air operations there was also a sizeable ground force, led by the Guards Armoured Division.

One officer in the Coldstreamers was Robert Boscawen; this account follows his part in Operation Garden, as the ground element of the operation was known. It is based largely upon his book "Armoured Guardsman" which covers his part in World War Two, and is well worth a read.

As the Coldstreamers were a follow on unit to the Irish Guards, they did not move out from their start positions until twenty four hours after the lead elements. Throughout the day all could be heard was a constant drone of aircraft ferrying troops to Operation Market.

When the Coldstreamers moved out, the first thing they had to do was drive past nine Irish Guards tanks that had been knocked out by German anti-tank guns. The ambush was within 100 yards of the Dutch border: despite the massive creeping bombardment, the Germans had been dug into a farm complex on the flank. This position was only silenced by some of the Typhoons from the seven squadrons deployed to cover the advance. From then on the Typhoons kept up constant coverage of the flanks of the advance, much to the appreciation of the Irish Guards.

For the next five days the Coldstreamers only had to contend with the deteriorating weather, however the main advance was running into trouble beyond the village of St Oedenode. German forces had launched a counter-attack into the flank of the Guards Armoured Division, the attack had reached the road and several trucks had been destroyed.

The first Robert Boscawen knew of this attack was when the road turned from a massive traffic jam to being utterly deserted. Peering into the driving rain the soldiers could not see far so quickly dug in with what they had: a few small arms with limited ammunition. Boscawen himself only had his revolver with six rounds. Further down the column, a 17-pounder gun was found, brought up and dug in. However, there were no shells. This scratch defence held on in the cold and wet, unable to light any fires for fear of attracting German attention. Even so the Germans sent a few mortar bombs in their direction.

The following day tanks and fighting troops arrived in the form of US Paratroopers and some Shermans. The Shermans were from the replacement squadron of the Coldstreamers, and so they were not a coherent unit and had no experience or preparations. The attack failed.

Finally the following day, after another stressful night, saw the arrival of the 7th Armoured Division whom had been widening the hole punched in the German lines by the Guards Armoured Division. The battle-hardened soldiers quickly re-opened the road and the advance could continue. However by now it was clear Operation Market had failed, so Operation Garden was suspended.

[Air Forces] The Origins of the Hellenic Air Force

As the development of military aviation in Greece began to ramp up in 1911, the Hellenic government turned to France and sent six of their officers to be trained as pilots, whilst ordering their first aircraft from the French firm Maurice and Henry Farman. Emmanuel Argyropoulos performed the first flight in Greece in February 1912 using a small, 50-hp Nieuport. Later that day a second flight took place when Argyropoulos took off again, this time carrying the Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos.

In May of the same year 1st Lieutenant Dimitrios Kamberos flew the first Hellenic military flight in a Henry Farman. Just a month later Kamperos flew his seaplane - a converted Farman 'Daedalus'. Flying at 110km per hour he set new world records and highlighted possibilities of a Greek naval air arm. Sadly, whilst flying from Phaleron to Patras in a Bleriot in 1912, Alexandros Karamanlakis lost his life during an unsuccessful attempt to ditch and became the first Greek pilot to be killed in a flying accident.

By September 1912, four military pilots established the first Greek air combat unit in Larissa. During the Balkan war the first air reconnaissance sorties were flown; in October - just a month after the birth of the first air combat squadron - a successful bomb drop on the Bizani strongholds was carried out.

During the First World War, both the Greek army and navy utilised air squadrons for carrying out reconnaissance and bombing missions. The two separate organisations continued to act within their own remits until 1930, when Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos founded the Aviation Ministry and the Royal Hellenic Air Force (RHAF) was added as an independent organisation within the Hellenic armed forces. The following year the Air Force Academy was established. In 1934 the RHAF began an extensive period of modernisation, developing the rank structure used to this day and importing new aircraft from as far afield as Germany, Poland and Britain.

World War Two saw conflict between Greece and Italy; 77 RHAF aircraft entered combat against some 460 Italian aircraft. Largely outnumbered, the men of the RHAF showed immense courage; with comparatively few aircraft they were still able to collect vital information regarding Italian movements whilst providing protection across the Greek skies. The greatest noticeable impact was the damage to the enemy's supply line during the conflict.

During November 1940 a RHAF Breguet 19 flew at low level along the front line near Albania, managing to attack an Italian Alpine Division . This impacted greatly on operations in the area. Shortly after this, Flying Officer Marinos Metralexis showed great initiative and bravery when, after expending all of his ammunition against an Italian three engined bomber, he then rammed the propeller of his PZL P.24 into its rudder to bring the aircraft to the ground. These two incidents signalled to Italy that although outnumbered, the Greeks had great courage and posed a greater threat than envisaged.

The RHAF continued its unceasing defences, successfully seeing of a large attack in Spring 1941. When Germany invaded it was again an unbalanced battle. But, once again Greece showed great courage. The RHAF shot down 64 Luftwaffe aircraft; sadly this came at the cost of 52 Greek aircrew killed.

Following a spirited fight, defeat at the hands of the vast German military was tragically inevitable. A few Greek aircraft escaped - fleeing to Cairo these surviving crews reformed under the British RAF to continue serving throughout the remainder of the war. After the liberation of Greece in 1944 the RHAF was heavily involved in both the Greek Civil War and the Korean war.

Today the Hellenic Air Force is a modern fighting force spearheaded by US aircraft such as the F-16. Currently in a period of transition, the Hellenic Air Force is about to take another quantum leap forwards in terms of capability and is assessing its options for the future.

Banned me for my screen name. Not a happy person, especially after they claimed my birthyear (1988) was a hidden "heil hitler"... WTH? My "offensive" screen name was D88isaac. Evidently, my Jewish name Isaac right after the "heil hitler" didn't spare me. 88 was a year, 88mm cannons are used in the game... Are they going to ban those too? The people who moderate this game need to explain things. I was simply told I "displayed pro-Nazi symols" and without warning banned. I would not trust spending another dime with this company. They might label you something terrible, then ban you for absolutely no reason. What a let-down, as the game itself is a lot of fun.

If you play the game, I would not recommend spending any more than you are willing to lose. As I, someone with an Israeli name directly in my nickname was banned for a nickname "espousing Nazi identification". I'm politically aligned at the opposite spectrum of National Socialism and absolutely believe 88 can represent things outside of crazy Nazi hidden symbols (ironically found also as premium unlocks for the planes you freaking fly).

Also, Gaijin charges people (200 Gold Lions) to buy Nazi symbols those are not hidden symbols, but outright Nazi symbology. Yet they claim I knowingly, sported a "hidden symbol" in my nickname. Haha, this is beyond laughable and will be brought up with Steam Customer service as I will be expecting a full refund on my purchases so far unless my crazy ban is removed promptly.

Update: They simply say I chose my nickname and the "symbolism it supports"... WHAT? Wait, now they are pointing to their ToS acting as if their contract is above slander and fraud laws, while accusing me of horrible intentions, with an innocent screen name!

How juvenile, politicized and incendiary is it to assume someone's intentions, then blindly defend that position!? The grammar from the company correspondence is absolutely terrible. Here are some of my favorite excerpts from one of the supervisors:
"Did we choose you a nick which was against our rules mate which did u sign to agree?"
"Does it is enough for you? Basically u will not get any compensation cause it was you who violate our rules. So u dont have any rights to have it."

This game is a mixed bag of epic fighter combat and poorly mismanaged company ethics.

[HISTORY/GAMEPLAY] -The game itelf can be quite fun and realistic depending on the different modes to choose from. In the beginning the game had organized matches the ranged from level 1 planes to level 20, but that was thrown out the window for a poorly implemented 1-5 tier system. The effects of fighter combat is still relatively good, you can take hits in your landing gear,chip a wing, lose a flap or propeller and "possibly" still land it to be repaired. Aside from that it is a total clusterf**k of unorganized and biased combat.The new leveling system was implemented to "so called" make leveling faster, but fans pooring in data proved the latter. Leveling has become a loong grind compared to the false imformation Gaijin provided. They pretty much want you to go Premium just so you can level at the old "normal" speed.

[ GRAPHICS ] The engine behind it is quite beautiful, almost any pc can run this game and the graphic settings can be tweaked so you can either have an intense and beautiful battle, or an optimized battle that still has decent graphics and details. So even your "lawnmower taped to a powersupply and running off gas computer" should be able to run it with ease given some tweaks.

[ ISSUES THAT PLAGUE, AND WILL TURN AWAY LONG TIME PLAYERS ] The real issue is the constant problems with unbalanced matches, unrealistic plane mechanics, and pro russian biased company.
-The 1-5 tier matching is complete garbage, You will often face planes that should not be in that tier/ or glitched using squad jumping( 4 players, 1 in a tier 2 setup, other players using tier 3).People use this method to use a higher ranked tier plane to literally slaughter underpowered tier planes in a lower tier match. The match making system is broken and has been unaddressed for months.
- The plane mechanics themselves though looking beautiful dont match up to the real statistics of how that plane performed during the war.Players have made spreadsheets upon spreadsheets of data comparing both real world war data against the game and find it very off. So many planes either underperform or overperform there real world possibilities.
- Finally, as an unwritten and talked about problem of WT, is how Gaijin: a russian game development company has been biased towards the russian nation in the game. As sad as it is, it has been proven by the fans of the game how badly biased the company has become. Almost ALL Russian planes throughout all tiers outperform in every aspect of combat. Russian planes can outturn, out climb, out run, and out gun every single nation aside from the japanese.Again when comparing real world plane statistics/data to the games counterpart it was far off in comparison. Not even the fire rate of the guns was even close to the real thing.

So this is why I give it a thumbs down. The game is fun for a week or two but becomes quite old after being slaughtered by higher tiered planes in a lower tier match and being out performed all the time by russian biased planes.

EDIT: Updated for patch 1.39

Patch 1.39 has changed several things. For one, all aircraft are 25% less reserch points. It still takes a long time to unloack all aircraft, but at least they're making some effort to balance the progression curve.

1.39 has also massively dropped the price of aircraft (and slightly dropped the price of repairs), in some cases aircraft are 1/3 of the lion price they were. Again, a step in the right direction. Original review content is below, most of the bullet points are the same.

As much as I want to, I can't reccomend this game. Gajin seems to have turned it into a money farm. Progression was always a problem in the game. pre patch 1.37 money was a problem. If you wanted to buy all the aircraft of a rank you had to either grind hard or buy premium currency. It was a constant complaint on the forums. Did Gajin listen? nope!

Post patch 1.37 the problem is even worse. Money is still an issue, only now you have to research aircraft individually. Other members have done the math on this showing that it slows progression and devalues premium currency by 4-5x. The progression curve is broken. So broken that it's kind of pointless to switch between countries. if you want a jet before your 60th birthday, you grind the hell out of one country until your brain melts.

This saddens me. The game itself is wonderfully fun. The way the devs have handled it makes me want to puke. If you do play, play for free. Don't give them your money like I did.

I used to love this game, but the developer's greed and incompetence made me change sides. The game right now is almost in a unplayable state due to MM (which is worse than ever), damage models, flight models, and on top of all the progression system. Eatch patch that comes only seems to make things worse.

Pros:
- Graphics
- Playing in some tiers and battles can be fun, but they are getting rare these days

Cons:
- Incomplete flight models
- Broken damage models (for planes and tanks, mostly favoring russian tanks)
- Russian bias (tanks and planes from the motherland being lower tier)
- Boring mission design, sometimes favoring one of the sides or specific vehicles
- Broken tank battles, tanks able to shoot trough trees and even some rocks
- Random crashes now and then
- Matchmaking is horrible, especially after recent patches
- Progression system is slow and frustrating
- Upgrade system is also slow and frustrating, especially in high tiers where it takes forever to be able to upgrade your plane
- Single player missions and campaigns are absolutely dreadful, the AI has unnatural flying physics and is capable of doing wierd stuff
- Premium vehicles can be changed and become complete useless, so if you decide to buy something, you might end up wasting your money when what you purchased has been changed.


Game was good a while ago, but now it's just a shadow of it's former glory.

P.S. Don't even try to discuss the flaws of the game on the forums, or you will end up banned.
