What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We have this crazy idea that an independent game developer can develop something the size and quality of a AAA game, by having the community take the role of publisher. We call this concept AAA-Indie. This gives players the game they want, instead of the game a greedy publisher wants them to have. We know Interstellar Marines is going to take a long time to make, after all we’re making a AAA game without the size or resources of a AAA studio. So rather than toiling away behind closed doors we want to spend this time with you, the player, and share the experience all the way from pre-alpha to the release version.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“This is for the love of the game, not the money. We'll be in Early Access until we have delivered our ambitious vision or Valve decides to shut down Early Access. So... a long friggin time.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Spearhead and Frontliner Editions will only be available in Early Access for those brave enough to support our quest to create a AAA-Indie game! For the full version we plan on having a Regular and Deluxe Edition. As far as features our plans for the full version include:

  • First Person Simulation
A razor-sharp focus on creating a truly immersive First Person Simulator via distinct graphics, audio, and gameplay.
  • Tactical Co-op
The entire game experience designed from the ground up to support up to 4 players in co-op, with true cooperative interaction.
  • Progressive Role-Playing
Flat and classless progressive character development and skill system that is not dumbed down for consoles.
  • Nonlinear Game Design
Open and dynamic game world that always presents a multitude of tactical options for navigating the environment.
  • Customizable Arsenal
A comprehensive selection of weapon models and types, extension upgrades and equipment options, allowing on-the-fly choice in each tactical situation.
  • Thinking AI
Enemies that react to input from you and the surrounding game world. We would rather have one smart enemy than five stupid ones.
  • Believable Science Fiction
Realistic and rich sci-fi environments, ranging from claustrophobic space stations to large outdoor worlds.
  • Interactive Storyline
A cinematic narrative centered around first contact with another sentient species, where your choices and actions will have consequences.

The full version will be more SP/Co-op focused than the current Early Access version where we are implementing and testing new mechanics primarily in a PvP multiplayer environment.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is in pre-alpha and players can expect to experience bugs, missing features, incomplete content, and some game breaking issues. Still, we have a couple community members with over a thousand hours in-game, and many with hundreds of hours. In the portion of the game currently available you are training in a top secret facility 2km beneath Groom Lake Nevada. These are the features you can experience right now:

  • Hell Week Event
  • 2 SP/Co-op Campaign Missions*
  • 4 Difficulty Levels
  • 5 Challenge Missions
  • 9 Multiplayer Maps
  • Dynamic Environment Effects
  • 3 PvP Game Modes
  • 100% Dynamic Lighting
  • Destructible Light Fixtures
  • Full-body Character Simulation
  • Visor Affected by Fog, Dust, and Rain
  • Spectator Mode
  • Movie Mode
  • Playground Mode
  • 3 weapons**
  • Tactical Laser
  • Tactical Flashlight
  • Ragdoll Physics
  • 28 Steam Achievements
  • Dedicated Servers Worldwide
*(Currently available as stand-alone missions)
**(pistol currently uses placeholder model)

We have a small but active multiplayer community. Look HERE to see when the most people will be on for you to play with, it is usually during the evenings in North America and Europe. There is also a budding esports scene at www.phyregaming.com that we sponsor.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We intend for the price to follow the value of the game. Expect it to gradually rise as we ship new content, but we may need to lower the price on rare occasions to correct for market conditions.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community can follow our progress on the Trello Board and vote for features they want to see. They will also be able to report and track bugs once we choose a bug tracking software. Players can also interact with the developers on the forums, in bi-weekly community get-togethers on our TeamSpeak Server, and at hosted esports events as soon as game features support it.”

Interstellar Aspirations: Time for a Dimensional Shift

We've just released an exciting new video detailing our plans and opportunities. Watch the video on YouTube.

Dear Marines, friends, and family,

Interstellar Marines has come a long way since we launched on Steam Early Access. Every penny earned has been spent on development of Interstellar Marines and we’re finally ready to secure a completion deal with a publisher or other knowledgeable investor to wrap up the game, release out of Early Access, and expand onto PS4 and Xbox One.

We have made a new video to present our game to publishers and potential investors. We would love it if you would share it around and help us find the best partner possible, thank you!

Interstellar Aspirations: Time for a Dimensional Shift video on Youtube:
https://youtu.be/DW2-gz9zngE
We've uploaded a video source file to Dropbox (MP4 1080p 60fps 60Mbps + removed Kims intro), feel free to download and share the video around your channels.

Keep track of our progress with Publishers & Investors:

Click the image above to view our public Info/Status google sheet of potential Publishers & Investors for Interstellar Marines or visit this link.

Please feel free to share this public google sheet around as well.

We look forward to keeping you updated on our progress to find a Publisher or Investor to complete Interstellar Marines: Aspirations and release out of Early Access and expand onto PS4 and Xbox One.

Update 25: Chameleon

Good Morning/Afternoon Marines!
This latest update to Interstellar Marines increases the value of your Combat Points (CP) by offering unlockable skins allowing you to blend in, or stick out, as much as you’d like.

Update 25 also adds a shining new menu interface and we've revamped the Introduction mission to include some of our new features.

https://youtu.be/XREtCFZq7OE

We’ve added a new menu interface created with Unity 5's UI system and we’ve also managed to squeeze in the option to vote for map, gamemode and difficulty in both co-op and multiplayer.

In our brand new customization hub you’ll find a broad range of cool tactical skins, and you now earn Combat Points (CP) during missions, challenges and multiplayer to unlock them with.

Special thanks to our community members who helped with camo designs!
  • Bourbon the Insane
  • Ninja Cat
  • ZundiePW
  • Gater
  • OG SWAT RV [LINUX]
  • TmsFin
  • Jackerino
  • Rien Moeyaert
  • Timothy Creitz
  • Five5staR

In its new iteration Hell Week has been renamed Wargames, a more fitting name for our co-op, singleplayer and player-versus-player sandbox combat simulator in the making.

We’ve tweaked the server settings and added a new Wargame called Scavenge, where you can collect combat points 24/7. But look out - You are up against 128 bots as well as all the other skilled and tactical players!
  • Scavenge wargame is 55 minutes long.
  • Scavenged CP’s are collected when wargame ends.
  • Unlimited respawns

We’ve updated the Introduction mission to make sure new players get a more consistent first impression of the game and the features currently available. Revamped sections are shooting range, stealth test, crashed dropship mission simulation and we added a fun little stress test and maybe an Easter Egg or 2.

FULL CHANGE LOG

What's Next

We’ve been taking a critical look at the inertia and general challenge of surviving in Early Access and decided to find and team up with an indie-friendly publisher moving forward to improve our development capabilities. Meanwhile, there will be updates, missions, and new game modes as often as we can make them while we search for the right partner to help realize our ambitious vision for Interstellar Marines.

About This Game

UPDATE 25 AVAILABLE - Interstellar Marines resurrects the old school tactical FPS, offering a unique blend of co-op, role-playing*, and non-linear gameplay. Set in a believable future, you take on the role of an elite operative handpicked to join Project IM, a top secret military program being assembled to protect mankind from all dangers outside our solar system.

Interstellar Marines is inspired by movies such as Aliens, Starship Troopers and Final Fantasy; and games such as Half-Life, System Shock 2, and Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield. Interstellar Marines is all about evolving the FPS recipe with all the inspirations we've assimilated since the birth of the genre. Our goal is an evolutionary leap forward driven by our compulsive interest in science fiction, role-playing, military realism, and respect for first person immersion.

*role-playing not yet implemented

Welcome to Project: IM

Since man first raised his head to the stars above, he has dreamed of conquering space. Interstellar Marines is the age old dream come true. It is the dawn of the 22nd century, a time of great hopes and expectations. The discovery of a new and inexhaustible well of power known as Zero Point Energy has revolutionized space travel. Man has escaped the confines of Mother Earth, and gone on to colonize the solar system.

But far away from public awareness an ambitious military project has already taken Man beyond the final frontier, and into the regions of the stars. The powerful Interplanetary Treaty Organization, ITO, is secretly constructing the first human settlement in another star system. You are a new member of the Interstellar Marines, a secret battalion within the ITO special forces created to protect humanity against potential threats from the confines of the unknown universe.

Now gear up Marine, we’ve got training to do! Welcome to Project IM.

New Hell Week Event

Featuring 9 New and unique areas where 64 players battle until only 4 are left standing! This event runs every 3 hours in each timezone, so there’s always one somewhere in the world starting at the top of every hour. We also have a Steam Leaderboard for Hell Week here which tracks Combat Points globally, monthly, and survivors of Hell Week. We'll let you know more about Hell Week Finals when it’s ready.

7 Singleplayer/Co-op Missions

Play 5 co-op and single-player missions against unscripted AI with dynamic environment effects or two pivotal missions inside the Interstellar Marines universe, The NeuroGen Incident and Assault on Starcrown Aerospace. Play singleplayer or co-op with up to three friends in intense action with more co-op and singleplayer missions to come!

9 Unique Multiplayer Maps Across 3 Game Modes

Take your friends out in Deadlock, Deathmatch, and Team Deathmatch on maps featuring dynamic environment effects such as time of day, rain, thunder and lightning, emergency lighting, fire alarms, moving platforms etc.

Realistic Simulation

With a physics-based dynamic character controller there are no floating hands, and you can even see your feet! The physically present combat helmet has a HUD projected onto the visor and is affected by dust, rain, fogging, and damage. Aim down the sight for the long shots and use the tactical laser to assist aim when hip firing, as there are no artificial crosshairs to break immersion. Use the intuitive crouch and cover system; spacebar (default) peeks over cover, and looking down leans you forward to see over ledges. You can also shoot out the lights and prowl in darkness, or use the tactical flashlight if you’re afraid of the dark.

We hope you enjoy the game, and look forward to developing it with you as we progress through Early Access!

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME,
Your team at Zero Point Software

I still believe.

The game doesn't have players and it's multiplayer. so you really shouldn't buy it if you'd want to play it.

but oh sweet lord how damn good these guys are at making game mechanics feel real, if this game would be an AAA title it'd easily surpass COD.
i still fear those robots lurking in the shades, and the unique sound they make when you know you don goofd.
playerbase is the absolute best, and it had the most potential. if the development progress would've focused on the single player instead of hell weeks (wargames) we'd be far from begging for help.
the vision these guys have about their game could bring back fps games into the days of glory, now that they're all call of duty and battlefield shoot n gun fragfests.

i wish best of luck to zero point software for their love of the game.

i still believe. do you?

Ok im going to be honest if you hate shooters that you actually have to work together, dont get this game. If you dont then countinue reading, this game takes team work on my favorite difficulty of realistic. IF you dont work as a team you will inevitably die. If you also love sci fi shooters, or just ones that are indie then buy this games!

Deveopment is still slow, but good games take time. Realistic should be the only availible mode, much more fun and dificult that way. Also more horror and story would be nice. The game is definity worth more than 10 dollars. Devs are pretty nice for lowering the price. Good game to play with friends. Would buy. I think this game I like about the same as arma 3.

Game is atmospheric and fun, but there isn't enough content to justify buying it, and the rate of updates is far too damn slow.

What Steam doesn't tell you is this game has actually been in development since 2009. It's literally been in development hell for 7 years.

Basically, it's trying to be Rainbow 6 in space with a single-player story added in. To be honest, I don't see how it's anything more than a dumbed down version of Star Citizen's single-player campaign. Sadly, Star Citizen's single-player will probably come out before this game does - even if they do find an investor to help with funding.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME YET IF YOU WANT TO SIMPLY PLAY IT

There is absolutely nobody in multiplayer. And that is a multiplayer game. So why bother to buy it?
Well gameplay is Unique as ♥♥♥♥. It fells like nothing before. Very good and gamechanging implementation of
weather, you can really fell that you have a body in the game, Sprintell Cell & farcry like multiplayer,
The climate.

Buy it only if you want to help the creators and expirence that game for yourself buy it.
Also the creators need money to contiunue the project, they are seeking sponsors ATM

Calling the dev cycle on this game "way too slow" is an insult to dev cycles and things that move too slowly. There has essentially been no significant movement on this project for years, and yet I still occasionally receive email updates about its development.

There are the beginnings of a good game, perhaps even a great one, here. But those beginnings have been in effectively the same state for many years.

Game might as well be abandoned now for how much has actually changed since I bought the damn thing. Two years of development time has resulted in what? Some weapon skins and a couple of lazily thrown-together game-modes?
It's utterly amazing how little progress this dev team have managed to make on this game.

It's pretty freaking good. Development is slow and stunted, and there are some issues (Lots of sharp-cornered hitboxes on sloped corners, etc...), but all in all, it's not that bad. It feels like the orgy of ARMA, old-school Rainbow Six, Starship Troopers, and even a little Counter-Strike. Yes, it has a learning curve. Yes, it can be a bit repetetive. Yes the AI detection is inconsistent. Still, somehow, I always get sucked back in with a hankering for another mission or two.

Overview
- I am a Spearhead Edition Buyer. Funny thing is they've never added the Hall of Honor, or Credits. [probably because it's not officially, "released."]
Honestly, IM is a great idea. It's actually been released for way longer than people think - there was a kongregate version like 5/6 years ago where it was just a training simulator and you couldn't move around much. I also talked a friend into getting the game since it had alot of potential like 2 years ago when the game was almost exactly the same game it is today.

http://www.interstellarmarines.com/game/ where you can play those Demos

I have a theory as well that this is all a dream/VR training simulator in the reality of the I.M. world.

This is a good game though barebones, it's not worth buying unless the Developer team[which is about 2 people from what I see going on in forums] secures major money[that won't come from sales] in order to develop the game. It seems to me what they're trying to do now is make a presskit to get another company involved in the making, so the game would finally get made. I guess it's better that the game be finished although I doubt it'll happen the way they want it to if another company picked it up.

Bottomline
Unless you see yourself playing the game with your active friends I would steer away.
BUT OFC the way to fix ALL Of these negative reviews is just to add content - make the game worth playing. The game mechanics right now are pretty much perfect except for stuff like prone and upgrade trees for skills/stuff like that... you would think that in the future we would have light intensity adapting visors.[when we have this in real life already]

I honestly would not mind if you guys added a bunch of content and then cleared the reviews just to see how the current build would stack up w/ people.

For now here's what the game offers:
4 Player Co-op: 2 maps of Elimination, 2 maps of Survival, 1 map of Escape, 2 long-length story missions.
PvP: 8 Vs. 8 I believe in Deadlock and Elimination
Varying A.I. Difficulties from I can't see you! to 1-shot you're dead :)

Unfortunately, nothing is "really new" since the Neurogen v3 update from way BACK.

Pros
+ Great Idea
+ Good for groups of 4 friends or more, if you're playing Hell Week.[warning points split]
+ No achievements that are really too hard if you get medium skilled players together, so it'll be a blast for a group of FPS loving friends.
+ standard PVP[nothing too special or different from the rest]
+ Great PVE
+ Sound is perfect.
+ Combat points - Weapon/Backpack/Camo Skins, but a very weak positive in order to increase replayability.

Cons
- The money already spent in making this game - it's been years since that initial fanfunding project. I know that the main dev only does graphical stuff, but maybe try taking on programming interns from your local college/DIY groups, so that they can get credits.
- Shark mainpoint of IM has yet to be released into the game.
- Only a few people behind this game now AFAIK.
- Low game population.
- E time to get magazines?
- Old issue of Pistol...I do not want this in my inventory/want an option to drop this piece of ♥♥♥♥/don't want to mousewheel to this gun when i'm empty on both of the automatics + looks too much like an SMG. I think you guys need to remodel it to something more traditional. Honestly, we're carrying a carbine length pistol[~15inches], sub-machine gun[~11inches] and a RIFLE[18+ inches]?
- No shotguns
- No snipers
- Hell week is boring because there's not enough robot action, but it shouldn't be like every inch is a battle, but more robots than it currently has.
- No improvements/additions to A.I./Robotic Enemies AFAIK.
- Fall through map bug[Just rejoin the game unless you're alone then you're screwed]
- You can clip through closing doors
- So2 should be o2 or Co2
- Groups of Robots[deadly] suddenly spawning in front of you
- Non-solid floors/areas of glitching to abuse.
- No penalty of PKing in Hell Week regardless of intercom stating that there is a penalty ,-,.
- No Prone
- Robots can blind you through walls with flashlight

*note to developers*
If you could get your game featured at a gaming con it would probably be a huge boon to your game's success though you'll have it pick up/release things faster like bi-weekly.

https://youtu.be/gPOOcdoFGXY

Specifics
The IM Project began 11 years ago. In order to secure funds they began by releasing a few Demos through public game places like The Vault, Bullseye, and Running Man. The greenlit Steam game was released on July 2, 2013 and I can't remember back then if the game was just barebones PvP, or had the Co-op Missions as well.

"On October 2012, Zero Point Software attempted to do a Kickstarter campaign with a $600,000 pledge by November 28, 2012. Their campaign failed to meet its funding goal, with only $157,906 raised from 3,823 backers."

That's a shame that they didn't get the money even if the campaign failed :(

Ex. List of expenses...
Electricity, Building Rental if not working at a home which is way more economical of indie devs, Musical Composition[people say it could cost Free, or $280-$2000 per song/minute/soundtrack], The main developer is graphical, so it's down to coding[huge job], server costs[anywhere to $20-$400+/month], food, sound effects, special effects, ect.

I guess it's good that we even got the 1st part of the trilogy done if you assume the $200k mark is where they were splitting the money per part.

I bought this for myself a while ago. It's that game you buy, forget about for a few months, play it all day one day, then forget about it for another month. Each time I log in there's a new update, but there's still a lack of content. Don't get me wrong, this is a very etnertaining tactical FPS and it's fun. It just seems...empty. I'll keep this as a thumbs up as long as the regualr updates keep rolling in.

There are the beginnings of a good game, perhaps even a great one, here. But those beginnings have been in effectively the same state for many years.

Yes they are slow with development but it really is a great game. The graphics are pretty good and gameplay is quite amazing and is VERY atmospheric with things like the day/night change even going completely dark in some cases, rain, and snow. There's fatigue and unsteady aim after sprinting, rain droplets and affects on your helmet. It's also pretty realistic on the realistic difficulty, a few hits and typically your dead or damn near it and so are the enemies(minus the bosses of course). With a few friends you can have a riot of a time so I can't not recommend it for $10. Especially if its ever on sale, snag this sucker.

I'd recommend this game. The more money these developers get, the better this game becomes. Ok there's a few peroblems I'll point out such as optimization. Yes, the game has frame problems due to it using the Unity engine. Yes, there's not that much on the game (like guns) but as I say, the more meny the better. The atmosphere when it comes to Co-op is excellent, I've also been told they plan on adding Snipers some time in the future.

This game has lots of potential, I suggest buying it now so you get it cheap. :)

They need to do a special offer where you buy it for £50 along with a few hundred pairs of pants.

EDIT: I did a bit of research after writing this and found that the game was actually announced *11* (ELEVEN) years ago. That's right, this game has been around for over a decade and there still is nothing to show for it. The most recent update as of May 21st 2016, rather than adding anything meaningful, added a new Main Menu UI and weapon skins, and the option to vote on what map you would like to play when your current round is over. Two months for weapon skins and a new main menu. Sorry folks but I don't think that asking for something other than that is very unreasonable at this point. Please don't drop money on this until the devs have some actual, functionable content ready.

I read a preview for the game I want to say around 6-7 years ago in the back of a magazine at the library. It detailed what the developers wanted to do and how they wanted to do it. Fast forward 6-7 years and so far we have a slightly above average multiplayer TDM/Domination game put together in Unity. It's above average because they've obviously spent quite a bit of time and money putting the game together, there are some neat ideas in regard to how guns handle and how you move. The sound design in particular is very well done, especially noting the differences when you play with your helmet on or off. I purchased the Spearhead Edition for $45 on their website back in 2010 when I was back in college, back when the game was only playable in your browser and was only a few sets of target practice modes. If the game had been released shortly after, even 2-3 years later, then it would have been fine. However, that is simply not the case for Interstellar Marines.

The bad parts are, like I mentioned earlier, that this game has been in development hell for what will be coming up on a decade now. There has been numerous issues, engine changes, failed crowdfunding attempts, "accidental" key giveaways that gave people who purchased the game all of the special legacy upgrades that people who paid $40+ five years ago originally had (Spearhead Edition benefits). They say the concept is to have an "indie-AAA" where the production values are AAA while being "published by the community." This is absolutely fine, and it's worked for many other developers and games.

This title, however, has been in development for *years* and the only progress that has been made is adding a relatively uninteresting multiplayer component (You would be *very* lucky to find more than a dozen or so people playing, even on their "Hell Weeks") and a few uninspired singleplayer missions that revolve around you shooting robots, collecting a handful of keycards, and racing to the endpoint. This would be fine, but the amount of content, and how ultimately boring it turns out to be, is just not worth your time. The environments are nothing more than large empty hallways and open rooms, with a handful of fences and doors. Nothing stands out, nothing is memorable. The robot AI consists of them walking in a straight line and trying to hit you, but they're slow, which means you can easily kill them before they get close. About 4 years ago they released a standalone "museum" type level that showcased a variety of enemies and environments, none of which have been seen anywhere else in any other part of the game.

The community essentially being dead is the big kicker at this point. Whoever is left defending the title at this point seem to have a fixation on making sure that there is nothing negative ever said about it. If you check Youtube, Steam communities, etc, you'll see quite a few people going on about "FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME", which is a phrase the developers came up with in regards to them developing a very generic coop military space shooter. ZPS has done a phenomenal job of doing the bare minimum of development and making it out to be part of a massive game changing update. I used to receive weekly emails that amounted to them saying:
"UPDATE: Gun model revisions.
UPDATE: Tweaked pistol sounds
UPDATE: Added laser sigh, have fun ;)"

It's kind of odd to say the least, the devs have been somewhat forthcoming and open about the development process, and they do stay in contact with what little people still have faith in them. But beyond all that as I mentioned before you aren't going to find a lot of people playing the multiplayer, even during peak hours it's practically impossible to find a full match, don't even get started on trying to find one with decent ping.

All else I can really say is: It's your money, it's $10, the game has been in development hell for years and I cannot in good consciousness recommend that you spend your money on this. At this point, it's not worth the $40, and it's barely worth $10. If ZPS can somehow pull something major off then props to them, but the game is just vaporware. I doubt I'll be able to get my money back since I purchased the game 7 years ago and I doubt they still have records that I bought the game in the first place.

I REALLY, REALLY tried to like this game. And yes it may not seem like I have played that much, and it is true. The graphics interface in this game ate through my framerate, even on my mega machine. The game was fun, though lack of content does not make up for anything.

Buy it only if you want to help the creators and expirence that game for yourself buy it.
Also the creators need money to contiunue the project, they are seeking sponsors ATM

"On October 2012, Zero Point Software attempted to do a Kickstarter campaign with a $600,000 pledge by November 28, 2012. Their campaign failed to meet its funding goal, with only $157,906 raised from 3,823 backers."

2013, I bought the Spearhead Edition. *this game is gonna be awesome*

2016,
242,274 ± 12,363 owners; the price was higher at beginning, sales, let's say around 10$/each; 2,817,055$
Even if they sold at $2.48/each; 600,840$

May someone explain this to me?
