What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Early Access have allowed us to develop the core features and technology platform of the game of our dreams in the making, which would not have been possible otherwise. We're at a point now where we can finally start to attract the attention of publishers/investors and complete the game; kickstarting this ambitious franchise. You can follow our progress & recommend publishers for us to work with on our Publishers & Investors Info/Status sheet.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“In June 2016 we started looking for a publisher/investor to fund the completion of Interstellar Marines: Aspiration and help us release out of Early Access on Steam and port it onto PS4 and Xbox One consoles. Once we have finalized an investment/publishing agreement, we estimate 17 months from that date until Interstellar Marines: Aspiration is completed. We extremely honored to spend this time with you, the player, and share the experience all the way from pre-alpha to the release.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Spearhead and Frontliner Editions will only be available in Early Access for those brave enough to support our quest to make the game of our dreams. For the full version we plan on having a Regular and Deluxe Edition. As far as features our plans for the full version include:

  • First Person Simulation
A razor-sharp focus on creating a truly immersive First Person Simulator via distinct graphics, audio, and gameplay.
  • Tactical Co-op
The entire game experience designed from the ground up to support up to 4 players in co-op, with true cooperative interaction.
  • Progressive Role-Playing
Flat and classless progressive character development and skill system that is not dumbed down for consoles.
  • Nonlinear Game Design
Open and dynamic game world that always presents a multitude of tactical options for navigating the environment.
  • Customizable Arsenal
A comprehensive selection of weapon models and types, extension upgrades and equipment options, allowing on-the-fly choice in each tactical situation.
  • Thinking AI
Enemies that react to input from you and the surrounding game world. We would rather have one smart enemy than five stupid ones.
  • Believable Science Fiction
Realistic and rich sci-fi environments, ranging from claustrophobic space stations to large outdoor worlds.
  • Interactive Storyline
A cinematic narrative centered around first contact with another sentient species, where your choices and actions will have consequences.

The full version will be more SP/Co-op focused than the current Early Access version where we are implementing and testing new mechanics primarily in a PvP multiplayer environment.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is in pre-alpha and players can expect to experience bugs, missing features, incomplete content, and some game breaking issues. These are the features you can experience right now:

  • Wargames (Sandbox Combat Arena)
  • 2 SP/Co-op Campaign Missions*
  • 4 Difficulty Levels
  • 5 Challenge Missions
  • 9 Multiplayer Maps
  • Dynamic Environment Effects
  • 3 PvP Game Modes
  • 100% Dynamic Lighting
  • Destructible Light Fixtures
  • Full-body Character Simulation
  • Visor Affected by Fog, Dust, and Rain
  • Spectator Mode
  • Movie Mode
  • Playground Mode
  • 3 weapons**
  • Tactical Laser
  • Tactical Flashlight
  • Ragdoll Physics
  • 28 Steam Achievements
  • Dedicated Servers Worldwide
*(Currently available as stand-alone missions)
**(pistol currently uses placeholder model)

We have a small but active multiplayer community. Look HERE to see when the most people will be on for you to play with, it is usually during the evenings in North America and Europe.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We intend for the price to follow the value of the game. Expect it to gradually rise as we ship new content, but we may need to lower the price on rare occasions to correct for market conditions.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community can follow our progress on the Trello Board and vote for features they want to see.”

Interstellar Aspirations: Time for a Dimensional Shift

We've just released an exciting new video detailing our plans and opportunities. Watch the video on YouTube.

Dear Marines, friends, and family,

Interstellar Marines has come a long way since we launched on Steam Early Access. Every penny earned has been spent on development of Interstellar Marines and we’re finally ready to secure a completion deal with a publisher or other knowledgeable investor to wrap up the game, release out of Early Access, and expand onto PS4 and Xbox One.

We have made a new video to present our game to publishers and potential investors. We would love it if you would share it around and help us find the best partner possible, thank you!

Update 25: Chameleon

Good Morning/Afternoon Marines!
This latest update to Interstellar Marines increases the value of your Combat Points (CP) by offering unlockable skins allowing you to blend in, or stick out, as much as you’d like.

Update 25 also adds a shining new menu interface and we've revamped the Introduction mission to include some of our new features.

https://youtu.be/XREtCFZq7OE

We’ve added a new menu interface created with Unity 5's UI system and we’ve also managed to squeeze in the option to vote for map, gamemode and difficulty in both co-op and multiplayer.

In our brand new customization hub you’ll find a broad range of cool tactical skins, and you now earn Combat Points (CP) during missions, challenges and multiplayer to unlock them with.

Special thanks to our community members who helped with camo designs!

  • Gater
  • OG SWAT RV [LINUX]
  • TmsFin

  • Timothy Creitz
  • Five5staR

In its new iteration Hell Week has been renamed Wargames, a more fitting name for our co-op, singleplayer and player-versus-player sandbox combat simulator in the making.

We’ve tweaked the server settings and added a new Wargame called Scavenge, where you can collect combat points 24/7. But look out - You are up against 128 bots as well as all the other skilled and tactical players!
  • Scavenge wargame is 55 minutes long.
  • Scavenged CP’s are collected when wargame ends.
  • Unlimited respawns

We’ve updated the Introduction mission to make sure new players get a more consistent first impression of the game and the features currently available. Revamped sections are shooting range, stealth test, crashed dropship mission simulation and we added a fun little stress test and maybe an Easter Egg or 2.

FULL CHANGE LOG

What's Next

We’ve been taking a critical look at the inertia and general challenge of surviving in Early Access and decided to find and team up with an indie-friendly publisher moving forward to improve our development capabilities. Meanwhile, there will be updates, missions, and new game modes as often as we can make them while we search for the right partner to help realize our ambitious vision for Interstellar Marines.

About This Game

Interstellar Marines is an immersive tactical sci-fi First Person Simulator in the making, offering a unique blend of tactical gameplay, dynamic environments and non-scriptet AI. Play Singleplayer or Co-op/PvP on servers around the world.

Interstellar Marines is inspired by movies such as Aliens, Starship Troopers and Saving Private Ryan; and games such as Half-Life, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, and Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield.

Interstellar Marines is all about evolving the FPS recipe with the inspirations we've assimilated since the birth of the genre. Our goal is an evolutionary leap forward driven by our compulsive interest in science fiction, role-playing, military realism, and respect for first person immersion.

Interstellar Warfare Initiative

It is the dawn of the 22nd century, a time of great hopes and expectations. The discovery of a new and inexhaustible well of power known as Zero Point Energy has revolutionized space travel. Man has escaped the confines of Mother Earth, and gone on to colonize the solar system.

But far away from public awareness an ambitious military project has already taken Man beyond the final frontier, and into the regions of the stars. The powerful Interplanetary Treaty Organization, ITO, is secretly constructing the first human settlement in another star system.

You are a special forces soldier training to join the Interstellar Marines, a part of the secret Interstellar Warfare Initiative being established to protect humanity against potential threats from the confines of the unknown universe.

It's time to evaluate the Interstellar Warfare Initiative and program evaluations are taking place at The Vault, ITO’s most advanced military facility on Earth enclosed deep beneath Groom Lake, Nevada. Supervised by SARA, ITO’s central neural network AI, SARA will program artificial weather and advanced combat training robots to test each warfare initiative to the limits.

This is where the game begins ...

7 Singleplayer/Co-op Missions

Play 5 co-op and single-player missions against unscripted AI with dynamic environment effects or two pivotal missions inside the Interstellar Marines universe, The NeuroGen Incident and Assault on Starcrown Aerospace. Play singleplayer or co-op with up to three friends in intense action with more co-op and singleplayer missions to come!

Wargames (Sandbox Combat Arena)

Unique sandbox combat arena in the making. Wargames is played across 9 distinct interconnected environment zones allowing 64 players to join in the scavenge for combat points, playing alone or in co-op. We have a special Wargames Steam Leaderboard which tracks Combat Points globally, monthly, and survivors of Wargames.

9 Unique Multiplayer Maps Across 3 Game Modes

Take your friends out in Deadlock, Deathmatch, and Team Deathmatch on maps featuring dynamic environment effects such as time of day, rain, thunder and lightning, emergency lighting, fire alarms, moving platforms etc.

Realistic Simulation

With a physics-based dynamic character controller there are no floating hands, and you can even see your feet! The physically present combat helmet has a HUD projected onto the visor and is affected by dust, rain, fogging, and damage. Aim down the sight for the long shots and use the tactical laser to assist aim when hip firing, as there are no artificial crosshairs to break immersion. Use the intuitive crouch and cover system; spacebar (default) peeks over cover, and looking down leans you forward to see over ledges. You can also shoot out the lights and prowl in darkness, or use the tactical flashlight if you’re afraid of the dark.

We hope you enjoy the game, and look forward to developing it with you as we progress through Early Access!

Your team at Zero Point Software

I saw this game online on a game website years ago and made an account and played the free training course and target shooting the game offered. I always wanted this game after I saw it and would always be checking on updates and what the devs were doing, the concept and idea of the game was amazing and sounded like a new amazing co-op and maybe horror game with an optional PVP mode but the soul of the game would be the amazing story and co-op/single player gameplay. Then back to 2013, I saw the game finally went on to steam early acces and was excited and instantly bought the spearhead edition and gave the free key to a friend. We played and checked it out, it was only pvp on like 2 or 3 maps but I didn't care, it was early access and just released so I still had hope and faith in this game. Then came some time after early access release, more PVP updates...still nothing for co-op, even more time, they finally released something..a small concept of co-op is what it seemed like, it was fun for the first run through of it but then it still seemed bland and not much. Still more time goes by and a new PVP mode and a few updates to co-op and singleplayer, just basically the co-op but a lone. I still had a little bit of hope in this game for a while but right now, three years and nothing to show for and very few to no promises made, I'm starting to struggle even thinking this game will get anywhere, I can't even touch the game anymore, theres nothing. I just comepletely forgot about this game and the company and so did the whole community. The community is lost in their hopes for an amazing co-op and singleplayer game that just probably will never happen. Many of the people who bought this were long fans of the game and thought we were finally going to get what we have been waiting years for. I can't recommend this game to anyone, just not now and the sad truth probably never. It's just an idea left in hiatus. So, don't buy this game. It shouldn't be on steam and its not going anywhere, we never got the co-op or singleplayer we were promised. Just so many PVP updates, it took so long for the first co-op to come in and it was just fighting robots and pressing E on things. Do not get this game, maybe sometime in the future we'll have the game we were promissed and hoped for, but probably not for a long time.

If you want this game for PVP it's dead. Completely dead, no one plays anything but around 7 play PVP.

This game is brilliant, if it looks like something you would enjoy and don't mind waiting a while then I'd really recommend it. if you look through the reviews the only reason they are negative is due to the slow development, but what they are trying to achieve and have so far is worth it, deeply immersive, tactical gameplay. These people that complain about the development time renforce why you should buy it, they can't wait for it to be completed.

To the people who are complaining, this is a small team and remember, you complaining like this is making it more likely for them to abandon the project than continue it. It's an invesment, be patient and if it looks promising and has gotten somewhere, it's probably going to be worth it in the future, so just wait.

It promised sharks with legs and cool survival mechanics. Its been YEARS... and none of that has even remotely been added into the game. Shame on you Zero Point Software. Terrible, TERRIBLE effort in trying to make a good game. Work hard and actually try to make something good. This game is garbage. Years ago i saw the trailer for this. I saw land sharks and awesome guns. Scary enviornments and dynamic maps. But that is all just a dream. This game is just a worthless dream. DO NOT BUY this game. I want a refund for the game. But i cant get it because i waited too long to see if this game would become something. Also the mulitplayer is dead. SO RIP ANYWAYS. Gaben let me refund this game.

This is without a doubt the longest game development I have ever seen. Over 10 years of waiting for a game that was never made.

Since the release on Steam early access (over 3 years ago), there has been absolutely zero content related to the main reason people bought the game, the single player. Everything that's been released so far is bland multiplayer, and even more bland co-op. The maps are limited, the content is limited, and I couldn't be more disappointed after waiting for so long.

Back in 2008 I had hopes that this game would set the standard for Indie developers, but as of May 2016, Zero Point Software have decided to find a publisher and pretty much go back on everything they've been telling us for years. I lost faith in Interstellar Marines a long time ago, but consider this review a warning. You will be disappointed.

PS: If I have to read "For the love of the game" one more time, I'll probably put my faith in Activision. At least they release finished games.

This game has been in the same early development stage for over three years now. What little that has been added is not nearly enough for me to give this game a good rating. To the developers, please either finish what you started or kill the game and produce something worth my time.

This game has no rating out of 10 because it has yet to be (and probably never will be) finished.

Bought it when it was first announced because it looked like it would be a cool game. All these years later the most I had to show for it were some somewhat buggy AIs, a couple of guns and limited maps. Basically I gambled on it having the potential to be a really good game in a cool setting, and lost on both counts.

Interstellar Marines has been one of the most entertaining games I have played, despite the fact that I am not a huge fan of the FPS genre. Zero Point Software's vision of creating a Sci-Fi tactical shooter is incredibly impressive, as is their work on the game so far. The game is highly detailed, incredibly immersive (in fact, it can be quite terrifying at times for that very reason,) and its multiplayer experience is actually pretty good as well. In order for your team to succeed in PvP, for example, you must work with your team to be successful; trying to be a hero and throwing yourself in the middle of dense firefights invariably gets you killed, and denies your team an otherwise valuable asset. Co-op is also quite interesting as well, and provides a formidable challenge in its own right. Playing the game on your own is not quite as enjoyable as playing with others, but do bear in mind this game is meant to be a multiplayer experience, rather than a campaign-based shooter.

Interstellar Marines, in my opinion, is an excellent game as it is. It does, however, suffer from a nagging problem that many early access games suffer today -- it has been, and still is, largely in its infancy after many years of development. The ZPS team is small and incredibly limited -- anyone who has been paying attention to their development knows this. It is for this reason I urge people to cut this team some slack. However, I also believe the way ZPS went about marketing this game was not smart. If I could give a piece of advice to ZPS, and I say this as a hobbyist developer, it is this:

Do not publish your game on Steam, even on early access, until you have achieved your game's primary goals. If this means keeping it off Steam for three years, so be it. You'll be able to focus on building your game as opposed to (expending resources better spent making a finished product) supporting an active community. Furthermore, Zero Point Software has lost hundreds, potentially thousands, of players over the years as people lost interest in a title they would otherwise be enjoying if it had been released as a finished product. By publishing this game to Steam before it was complete, Zero Point Software lost a large chunk of supporters.

Am I suggesting taking IM off the shelf until it is complete? No. It is far too late to take IM off Steam, as it would upset the few people still enjoying the game. If this game were finished before being put on Steam, I have no doubt it would be at least half as much a hit as TF2 for a good while.

So, do I suggest purchasing this game? No. HOWEVER, if you appreciate the ZPS team's work and wish to see development continue, I highly recommend supporting these developers as they persue their goal of completing this game. Make donations, and to those who already own the game, please provide plenty of feedback. They have put a lot of effort into making what you see before you, and it would be a heartbreak to see this opportunity wasted. I hope it's not too late for this game to see a resurgence.

Ok, the entire reason this game has negative reviews is because development has been slow. That's it. The devs are incredibly undermanned.

The devs have however stuck to the game (unlike a lot of early-access games) and have been (at time of writing) talking about getting support from a publisher. So hopefully the development will speed up soon.

That said, it's a glorious game with amazing promise. The current open-world survival-ish gamemode is pure gold. The pvp is lacking, but it DOES advertise itslef as a mainly coop game so whatevs.
