This update we've added three new co-op and singleplayer game modes to three maps, providing hours of additional co-op and singleplayer gameplay to Interstellar Marines. We've also added new Steam achievements, and included two hotfixes for The NeuroGen Incident.

Interstellar Marines resurrects the old school tactical FPS, offering a unique blend of co-op, role-playing and non-linear gameplay. Set in a believable future, you take on the role of an elite soldier handpicked to join Project IM, a top secret military program being assembled to protect mankind from all dangers outside our solar system.

Interstellar Marines is inspired by Half-Life, System Shock 2 and Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield. 'Quick' & simple review:

Pros:
  1. Dedicated developers, even if progress on the game is slow. (For goodness' sake, it's a small indie studio!) Plus great community managers!
  2. Generally mature, close-knit, and wonderful community.
    (I must warn you, a few black sheeps exist.)
  3. Intentionally challenging game mechanics: (devs are aiming for realism)
    • No HUD crosshairs,
    • real weapon recoil,
    • hearing impairment after taking damage (with disabled HUD until you recover),
    • dynamic character breathing (which affects gun wobble),
    • limited movement speed and hampered jumping,
    • no checkpoints/save system in campaign/co-op
      (aka. permadeath, 'cuz it's hardcore),
    • long respawn time in PvP to force the players to be vigilant,
      (you can never be too careful in this game)
    • fair & balanced PvP
      (for now, SMG and rifle are available, and NO KILLSTREAK BONUS, HA!),
    • bots are literally robots who can flank you, snipe you a mile away, and make you wish you are wearing adult diapers on harder difficulties.
  4. Innovative game mechanics:
    • First-person simulation
      (no floating hands, no viewmodels,
      full first-person body is rendered where FP camera resides... and that helmet faceplate you see in first-person?
      Yep it's a real in-game, in-environment model too)
      wtf, the HUD too?,
    • dynamic crouch & cover system,
    • changing environments and game states.
  5. Dynamic maps! (This deserves repetition!)
    (Laugh as a wall rises to block your opponent off, or ragequit when a ninja jumps on you.)
  6. Awesome audio & visuals!
    (Provided that your hardware can take it and max out all the settings, and it's in Unity.)
    • Hear the water splatter around you at different places
      (on the ground, on your helmet, on the roof...)
    • Watch how the water splatters on your visor
      (hint: slowly look up and down... if you bought this game)
    • "...help..." (Officially denied by the devs & CM)
    • Check out the lighting!
    • ...and maybe many more fine details that are too damn obscure that you must pay attention to actually notice.
  7. Tense atmosphere in both campaign/co-op and PvP.
    (Your flashlight may or may not be your best friend.)

Cons:
  1. It's Steam Early Access.
    (not really a bad thing, but I guess some people don't like the notion of buying an incomplete game.)
  2. It's hungry for hardware, and not Mac/Linux-friendly ('cuz OpenGL and Unity).
    • On my iMac:
      30-60fps main menu, 15-30fps in PvP,
      drops to 1-5fps on NeuroGen Incident (biggest map in the game)
    • *turn off beamsync*:
      OVER 90... yeah... until NGI, it drops to 5fps
    • Switch to Bootcamp Windows 7:
      40-100fps main menu, cool 30fps in PvP, 20-30fps on NGI... not bad.
    • *switch from DirectX to OpenGL*:
      screw this... OpenGL & Unity hate each other.
    • Machine: Intel i5 2.5GHz, AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB, 8 GB RAM
  3. Plenty of bugs to stomp (which I actually enjoy, but then, again…)
    • I mean, check out the pinned post I'm keeping (or I had been keeping) in the Steam Discussions page. It's friggin' long...)
    • Seriously. The list, although unofficial, is longer than this puny review. The official buglist is much longer.
    ("...where the **** is the keycard?!" "HOLY CRAP I AM FALLING THROUGH THE MAP!"
    that kind of thing. But a marine keeps his cool, no?)
  4. Server rollback has yet to be coded & implemented. (keyword: yet)
    • Client-server feedback latency may vary for different people.
      If your opponent/robot manage to shoot you in the head before you can even react, blame lag.
  5. Small multiplayer population + surplus servers + high ping (in my area)
    • Perfectly good money wasted on empty servers, IMO.
  6. No landsharks, yet.
    • Devs are so perfectionist that they want to perfect the AI code before introducing the sharks... *hype dies out*
  7. Spoiler: Not in space, yet. (The NeuroGen Incident is a reenactment underground.)


Thus, in the current state of this game:

Recommended For:
  1. Gamers looking for a highly balanced and tactical FPS.
  2. Gamers looking for thrills with replay value, and tired of mediocre jumpscares.
    (Advice: Never play on Easy mode. It kills the atmosphere.)
    But this is not meant to be a horror game. It's... uhm... a test!
  3. Live by the game tagline: In space, your friends can hear you scream.

Not Recommended For:
  1. Gamers used to and prefer mainstream FPS, like CS, CoD, BF etc.
  2. People who don't like buggy and incomplete indie games.
  3. Gamers who set the same high expectations like they do with heavily funded games by big publishers.

Very solid game that does one thing right that so few games do; look gorgeous and be immensely fun simultaneously.

When I bought this game, I immediately regretted it when the game was nothing more than a few multiplayer maps that you could walk around in.
It has improved a large amount since then, with a co-op campaign being added. It looks like a good start to an atmospheric survival-horror game. Perhaps not quite worth the $20 at this stage since there is still very little there, but maybe in the future.

7.9/10 - Pants were ♥♥♥♥.

Given a chance to review this game I thought I was coming into a simple survival FPS game. When I began to play more I quickly relaized my first thoughts were not on point. While this is an FPS and their is a survival element I was pleasantly surprised by the scary tactics and horror this game brought in. It reminded me of F.E.A.R somewhat as their was always ambient noises that could scary you by themselves. I went into more detail on a review I did.

Pros:
The Game shows huge pentential to grow. What I mean by that is being an early access game and in alpha it already has a feeling of almost being complete. This means there is still going to be so many things added to the game that will flesh it beyond what already it is.

Horror ascpects get you. The Game is lethal a simple tackle or a few shots and your dead from the AI because they are not forgiving. It gives you the sense of realism in the game and immerses you to the point where all the running, clanks, and movement of enemies truely get you on edge and scare you.

Co-op is amazing and well done.

Cons:

Its in Alpha so there are optimatization issue and clipping when going up and down in an elevator. This is to be expected as the game is still in beginning stages and has a lot to go so I am not worried theses issues will continue.

Highly Recommend this game to everyone!

I quite like the game, I find the developers likeable, and I don't seem to understand why people complain about updates as if they don't realize that full release games sometimes take longer to update, I do hope this game makes it to full release, it'll be nice to see a game with half life as an inspiration

You won't be dissapointed with what they've created so far (since update 14).

Definitely a game to keep an eye on once it gets out of early access (might be a while though)...

In the time since I bought this game:
-a second gun has been added
-all stats have been tweaked, all aspects of player control and gunplay have been improved
-many maps have been added and upgraded
-PvP has undergone several major upgrades
-PvE has been added, and just recieved a major update.

This game looks beautiful, especially for an indie title. I've never seen such a good-looking Unity game before, and the lighting/weather effects are breathtaking in motion. As you play the PvP modes, the map dynamically cycles through weather and lighting settings. One moment, you're fighting in an artificial swamp at conditions mimicing sunrise. Long shadows stretch out from the trees, and long-range battles take place from various rocks, trees and islets. In the space of a few seconds, the whole map goes dark. The huge light simulating the "sun" blacks out, fog rolls in and glistens softly in what little "moonlight" remains. Flashlights pop up, then quickly disappear as people remember that their flashlights give them away. What follows is a tense few minutes stalking the swamp, searching in vain for your enemies in the shadows. The whole map is silent save for your own footsteps and breathing. Firefights, when they happen, are fast and frantic as players scramble to kill each other and slip back into the darkness. Aiming lasers and flashlights are always a tough choice. Using them will help your aim, reveal your enemies, or near-blind anyone looking directly at the flashlight, but using them for any length of time will quickly alert enemies to your position. Guns are accurate, but not *too* accurate, taking penalties for running, moving, standing, or being winded in addition to possessing a decent amount of kick. That said, bullets are quite deadly. A few good shots or as little as a single headshot can kill a combatant or a teammate.

All of that combined makes for a very tense and atmospheric shooter. I recommended it when it had little more than a team deathmatch mode, and I would give a stronger recommendation now. Development is steady, and what is on offer now is much more substantial than it was a year ago. PvP combat is like a very dark and deliberate version of Insurgency or Red Orchestra 2, with the addition of dynamic maps. PvE is still in early stages, but it's currently a brutal set of objective-based missions taking full advantage of the engine's atmospheric potential.

This is an awesome game for Pre-Alpha. When you first play this game, you probably will get slaughtered all the time, but practice makes perfect. At the time of writing this the game does not have many features or gamemodes but the devs have been hard at work making the game we know and love today. If you don't like it now, give it a year or two and then come back, it should be way better then :)

Game is extremely amazing, especially if you like First Person Shooters, Sci Fi, Realism, and other assorted things. The singleplayer is pretty spooky so far and the multiplplayer isnt even broken unlike that Battlefield 4 youve been neglecting to play. The best part is that it is so complete and its still just and early access, SO THINK OF ALL THE POTENTIAL THIS GAME HAS. For an early access i would rate it an 8/10 and give it The Hipster Seal of Approval.

Great game, hard as nails, shines with friends/mics. Doesn't feel like Early Access--EXTREMELY polished in current form.

Difficult and Fun. Has a tendency to make you rage quit after you die for the thirty-first time in the NeuroGen Incident.
Terrifying, even though no landsharks yet.

I've been a Spearhead supporter since this game was a shooting range that ran on your browser. Hehe. I guess you either get it right or you don't. And as simple as that prototype was, it left me at awe. I have played shooters all of my life. From CS, Unreal, to MOH, COD2, MW and all of the Battlefields. The only thing that comes close to the level of authenticity in animation and visuals of this game is perhaps BF4. But IM still manages to strike a completely different and authentic feel that no other game has ever captured. With all the planned features and all of the things that they have created so far. I am greatly impressed. I really wish all of the best for this game and I want it to thrive and grow. I really am enjoying the co-op modes that have been added, and I am now seeing greater potential in this game. I have never, for a second, given up on Zero Point Software. I wish them the best of luck and hope to see this game in its full form, however long that might take. Great things take time, especially when you're not shackled by a Publisher. As a gamer, if you are looking for a shooter to satisfy your thirst for good emersion, you have arrived at the right place. You just need to be patient and let the game grow at a healthy rate.

So far, it's un-friggin-forgiving. Even the lowly droids can kill you without a problem. It's still in an early stage, but don't let that stop you from getting it. It looks amazing, and has quite a lot of potential!

Intersteller Marines shows a lot of promise, though need a lot of work still.
Multiplayer works well enough, but I haven't played it much since I seem to die every minute. The singleplayer/co-op mission that was released not too long ago is pretty good, considering it was the first one available on Steam (Though I've only played singleplayer version). However the AIs are stupid and sometimes run right past you.
My favorite feature of this game is the lighting effects, which are some of the best I've seen in a video game: very dark or very bright all in the right places, and synthetic lights flicker and die when you shoot them.
The helmet effects are also really well done, with water drops in the rain, smooth transition when it's rained or lowered, and vision seems to be a little cearer when its up, though all hud-elements disappear (which is a nice, realistic touch). Also it's nice how when you're crouching, you peak over cover while aiming down-sight.
The game's nowhere near finished, but what they have is great, and I look forward to future updates.
