What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“It’s easy to say We know best, we know what kind of game we want to make., but in the end, we’re not making the game for ourselves, but for YOU, the community, the players. Is there really any better way to tailor the game to players’ tastes than to ask them directly? And get awesome amount of feedback, suggestions and constructive criticism? We think there isn’t.”

How long will this game be in Early Access?

“The initial plan was to stay in Early Access for a shorter period, but the overwhelming amount of feedback from the community was a good indicator it would be wise to change our plans and focus on the things the community suggested, either in the form of new unplanned features, or in the form of tweaking some existing game features. Our plan is to exit Early Access and reach for the final version is September 2014. We’re confident we can do it!”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Since we entered Early Access, we’ve released some 25-30 updates. We do it regularly, with each new update bringing something new: bug fixes, tweaks, new features, optimization… We will continue to do the exact same thing up until full version… and actually afterwards as well. No point in stopping, is there ;)? The full version will feature a complete campaign storyline, a bunch of side quests, more varied freelance (randomly generated) missions and a host of other features that will all add up to the gameplay experience.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The most prominent part is the freeroam mode, currently the only game mode available, but we should start implementing the campaign storyline piece by piece, and have it finalized for the full release. The game is still a WORK IN PROGRESS, which means bugs are a-plenty and we’re working every day to make the game more stable and play-worthy. Steam Workshop is also fully integrated so feel free to check out some of the great mods members of the community have created. Since we update the game regularly, the best way of getting a glimpse of the current state of the game is to have a look at the reviews section and the discussion board.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. The price was slowly incremented during the course of Early Access, and will continue to do so, reaching the full price on full release. We do our best to opt into various discounts and special promotional sales, so if the current price is too high, you can wait for one of those to appear :).”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“In any way possible. This is what Early Access is all about, in our opinion. We browse the discussion boards constantly, talk about features, on how to improve them, what else we can add… We cannot promise we’ll add EVERYTHING that is suggested, but we can certainly promise we’ll do our best. Every suggestion posted on the discussion board is carefully listed on our internal wish-list (it got pretty massive…) which we use as a source for new features and tweaks. That same wish-list will remain our focus even after the game hits full release, and we’ll simply continue working on the game, improving it, adding features etc.”

We do NOT officially support Vista, as is shown in the minimum requirements section (Win7 is minimum), but we do our best to keep it compatible nonetheless. PLEASE keep this in mind when considering a purchase. The current version does run on Vista though, but there is a special procedure for it (you need to opt into a special product branch) which is described in detail on the game discussion board.

Captain your own space ship and roam the galaxy in 3D in this tactical space simulator with tons of RPG depth ! Space has never looked so inviting - but images can betray...

It has been two years since the end of the second Gemini war, and the situation in the wartorn system is further from resolution than ever before. The collection of freedom fighters named Gemini League is now reduced to a small group, with no power or influence, after losing their leaders. The situation was looking bleak, when they suddenly halted their armada and re-shifted their focus on fortifying Starpoint with staggering numbers. Rumours soon spread that they were afraid of something coming after them through the T-gate, from what was supposed to be the core of the Empire. What are they running from that makes even the mighty Empire tremble?

Early Access Review
First Impressions:
For an early access game this game is already really playable as the sandbox mode works just fine. See this game as EVE offline. You fly your own ship (which you can upgrade or just buy a bigger one) around a HUGE universe that has highway like wormholes and natural wormholes. You can also move around anywhere under your own power so just traveling on highways or through wormholes isn't a must. There are hints of fleets in thwere but haven't been able to start one, although you can already by extra ships and leave them in your garage.

Your Ship:
Upgrades for your ships are plenty and the weapon systems include, lasers, plasma cannons, railguns, missiles, and much more which you can freely add to any supporting hardpoint on your ship (light for guns, heavy for ammo consuming launchers). All upgrades and repairs happen on the station and I've noticed you really need to shop around the stations to get the best stuff.

Your Crew:
Yes, this game has crews as even your starting ship is more then the usual fighters you get in other games. There are 3 shipstations which you can hire crew for. The crew gives you boosts on weapons or ship systems like engines, shields and cloaks depending on their skills. Again every station/planet offers different crews with different skills.

Gameplay:
Random missions are generated all the time wich includes simple "go there and shoot.." missions, scan anomalies and bringing around cargo and passengers. You can visit many many stations (and planets) to upgrade, repair, hire crew, trade and lots more. The universe is very much alive as you encounter friendly and non friendly ships all over the place. Some sectors and stations really don't like you and can form a real challange when fighting in those sectors (enemy reinforcemants and stations blasting you). Fighting is mouse controlled, aim and shoot your light weapons by clicking the right mouse button and fire your heavy ammo consuming weapons with X. Also you can give the command "Fire at will" which will basically unleash all weapons on all in range enemies (this can be very much fun to watch while you just fly around avoiding damage with guns blazing).

Trade is already present in the game but is still in it's first stages so you get very little info on prices except for a news scroller that is viewable on every planet and station.

Development:
Patches are rolling out in a steady pace and the devs are very active on the forums (Post a question, suggestion or comment and you'll likely get a reply within the hour). This just gives you extra confidence to buy this game in early access and help in it's development.

Current Verdict July 18 2014:
Highly recommended early access game that is only getting better with each update.

*My above opinion still hasen't changed, latest update is again full of content. Recommend to pick up on current sale :)

So, you've played Freelancer, Wing Commander or Privateer. Its been years since these games were released and perhaps, for you, just like me, they left behind a massive void. I've leapt at EVERY space sim/rpg that been released in the hopes, that one day, they'll replace what I lost with Freelancer. Sadly they never did. So I saw this on the front page of Steam and thought, heres another disapointment. Well Starpoint Gemini 2...blew me away. This game is THE best space sim I've ever played and its in beta!!

Beta will always be beta, that said, this game is solid. When you read the description and see theres only a dozen planets, don't be fooled. The galaxy is ♥♥♥♥ing huge. Absolutely enormous. Open world to boot. No loading screens. Just you, your ship and the stars. There are some absolutely amazing locations, zipping through asteroids, cruising the nebulas...its awesome.

Theres a diverse choice of ships for you to cruise the stars with. Gunships, Corvettes, Frigates, Destroyers, Cruisers, Battleships, Dreadnaughts, Carriers, Freighters and freightliners. Each ship category has multiple choices and each of those choices allows you to build your ship in the fashion you want. Do you want a ship decked with heavy batteries, rain missiles and torpedos down on people. Do you want a majority of light batterries, decking your ship with railguns, beams or plasma cannons? Perhaps a ship that can deploy a large number of soldiers to board the enemy ship and take it over. Yea, you read that right. You can board an enemy ship, take it over and either destroy, loot it or sell it.

Perhaps the trade life is for you, with a vast hold and fast engines to shoot you away from the pesky gunships. Trade hasn't been completely implemented atm. In Freelancer if you remember, you could see what planets were buying what for what price etc etc. That hasn't been implemented yet so you have to find them yourself. Perhaps your a miner at heart and want to reap the profits from those floating rocks. Go right ahead, blast away. If you want a huge yield you can buy missiles especially dedicated to obtaining larger yields.

You can tailor your ship to fulfil what ever role you require. If you need more energy to fire you weapons, buy system attachments and upgrades to improve their energy reserves and recharge rates. Missing that little gunship too much, you can increase their accuracy or their damage against their shields. You can hack the enermy ship and disable their systems if thats the approach you like. You choose a career role. Each role has various abiliies for use that augment your fleet, turrets, shields, movement and various other cool things. Yea, thats right. You can build your own fleet to travel around the galaxy with you.
Sounds perfect for a bounty hunter right? Your going to need it to tackle the toughest bounties in the galaxy. You track the bounties yourself and take them down. Be warned though, they aren't alone and they're prepared to fight.

Seriously guys, I can't praise this game enough for what its doing. Yea, theres only free roam available atm but you can do WHAT EVER you want. Want to be a pirate, theres a huge array of choices for you and they're everywhere. You want to own your own carrier and deploy fighter wings, YOU ♥♥♥♥ING CAN!!! THIS GAME IS IN BETA and despite that, you can do soo damn much. I've crashed twice and that was in the first 2 hrs, since then, I haven't had a single problem. The galaxy is yours for that taking atm. I highly reccomend this game to all Freelancer, Privateer and Wing Commander fanatics. Even to those who are new to the scene. This game is so diverse and intricate in all its details...but god damn its so easy and simple to understand and master.
This game is in on-going development, if its this good already, I can't wait till its finished!!

As a long-time fan of the great grandfathers of space trading, exploration and combat games, (Elite, Wing Commander, Privateer). I am always on the lookout for a game of this genre that has the feel and enjoyment these classics gave.

Starpoint Gemini 2 goes a long way to bringing back those days in a modern, eye pleasing, fun package that is not overly complex like some of the modern games ( later X Series, EVE Online) which although are great games and in many ways superior, probably due to much larger budgets, leave me feeling like I have just sat the final papers to a master’s degree.

Starpoint Gemini 2 which is still in beta at time of writing this review, shows great promise and I eagerly look forward to the future updates and release of this enjoyably challenging game.

I hope to add additional updates to this review as new releases come out and I explore the game further.

(Still in Alpha stage)
Pick a style that you like to play, space sim wise, and go do it..lol Be a pirate/bounty hunter/merchant/miner..ect No story line ATM, but as it stands right now, it is still worth the money. You can easily get 20 buck worth of enjoyment out of it, plus some. When the game is done, you will be glad you did get in on early access. Fun ships and plenty to choose from, even now. Good fight and flight modes of flying. Great space eye-candy. No loading screens to get from one side of the map, to the other. Unless you are using the jump gates, then there is a small load. You want that ship the npc is flying? Just board it TAKE IT!!..lol Over all, I cant give much of any complaint. As a reference, its like a graphics smak down, with a upper cut in gameplay, to Freelancer!!..lol (only SP, no co-op multi..-1/2 star..lol)
I give it 4&1/2 stars out of five: with it, as it stands, in Alpha

MINDBLOWING!!
This game has everything Xrebirth failed to delivered.
Which is... EVERYTHING!

Space sim at its best!
Awesome graphics, ultra complex UI, systems, skills, perks, menues, customization and upgrades!
Frekin' beautiful soundtrack, breathtaking space surroundings, detailed ships
fully customizable with your own colours, designs and even logos and names!

Full sandbox open space with Missions, from Bounty Hunting systems, to Repair, protect, assinations and trading.
Full mining system as well, with different tools including mining torpedos!
Tons of camera views, full manual aiming to fire at will auto-weapons.
Your own crew on board, from gunships to Capital ones, fleet or trading merchants, or even engineer corvettes.

The technical aspects of this game is AAA+
Bugs? I havent found any yet, even if this game is on beta stage, which is impressive!
There is a lot of things the devs will add following community guidelines as well.
A full story-mode and MODS are on the way!

Starpoint Gemini 2 is a masterpiece, a gem, and a chef-d'oeuvre for the price.
Thank you LGM for such a polished game.
I cannot wait for you guys to implement all the goodies including achievements!

**UPDATE** Starpoint Gemini 2 Has Made it To The Beta Phase...

If you love space games then this one will keep you going for a long time! It is still in development but is quite playable and fun even in alpha...
This is a rare gem because the Dev team takes a very open and active role in communicating with the players and taking to heart the feedback, you can see the result of this with each update! I strongly believe that this is going to be a great game.

In case you have not noticed yes I am a hard-core space gamer;)
Even in alpha state this game is well worth the price and in better shape than most release quality games!. You start the game in a pre-defined ship that you can sell to get a different ship(be it a bigger one)there is a garage that you can park all the ships you have this is a great feature. There is plenty to do, such as mining which is done via blowing the astriods apart and getting the ore that drops. This feature is still being worked on and will get even better.

Trading is also good, with all the many stations and planets you can spend many hours in search of a better price for goods. There is also freelance missions, currently there is passenger, trade, assassination, patrol and rescue they are quite good but this is a feature that is still being tweaked so expect them to get even better:)

The graphics are really well done and run good on most systems. Gemini is a huge place with lots of areas that you will want to visit and explore, in a way it reminds me of freelancer in regards to exploring and how trading works. This is a quote from danijel one of the developers about trading
"Let me give a more detailed explanation. Trading is planned to be similar to that of Freelancer: fixed prices of goods on various stations/planets. Commodities are the cheapest where they are produced.

We felt that wasn't enough, so we'll also have random global events firing off that can impact prices, either globally for the entire Gemini, or on a region-basis, or on a faction basis etc. Since we felt that still wouldn't be enough, we'll also implement certain triggers that the player can fire off to initiate such global events. For example, knocking out a number of gas collectors in a region, will inevitably have an impact on gas prices in the region and beyond".

The sound is also quite nice that draws you into that mood of open space. The voice overs and the crew sounds are excelent and they are still adding more in. The sound effects such as explosions and weapons fit in just right.

The game runs good with very little CTD's and that is damn good for a game that is still in alpha state!
All in all I give this game an A+ so if you are on the fence about buying it, stop and get it now. By doing so you are doing a great deed in helping fund a really great game that I think will have its name in the "Space Game Hall of Fame"... Also be sure to check out the community forums http://steamcommunity.com/app/236150/discussions/ And the main website http://www.starpointgemini.com/
Best of luck to all the pilots and god speed.
**UPDATE**
The newest patch has introduced allot of new content and fixes... The performance has been greatly
improved also so if you not got this legendary space game yet... Well, what are you waiting for ;)
