About This Software

RPG MAKER lets you create an original role-playing game without any prior specialized knowledge or training. RPG MAKER XP is full of the functions you've been asking for, including game data encryption and a scripting feature that lets you change the very heart of the RPG MAKER engine.

By improving the operating environment, the program can now provide support for a full-colour display and greatly enhanced graphic capabilities. With support for PNG full-color mode and alpha channel, you can adjust the settings for graphic translucency as well as specify the transparent color. RPG Maker XP includes three map layers, allowing you to create complex and layered maps. The program includes a base set of graphics and sounds that you can use and modify at no extra charge. You can also import your own graphics and sounds, making your game truly stand out.

RPG MAKER XP is equipped with the Ruby Game Scripting System (RGSS1), based on the Ruby language and customized especially for this program. Though mastering RGSS may take some time, it is a powerful tool in fully customizing your game. You can use RGSS to change how your game looks, feels, sounds and plays. If programming is just not your forte, you can turn to a wide variety of user-created scripts that's shared within the RPG Maker community.

RPG MAKER XP is perfect for beginners and experts alike.

just go buy VX Ace, this one sucks

for some odd reason only certain tiles have collisions and others don't have any,for example,if you want to make a Room, you can't put any kind of walls because they are considered as part of the floor...why did they put that certain texture if they are too lazy to put collisions on it.it just ruins the experience.

I got a cracked version ages ago (I was a kid with no money dont judge so harshly) and the simple style and easy interface is Ideal for anyone planning to work on their first few games. It helps give you an Idea of what you may want to do for larger products. Keep in mind though it has limitations, I love this tool dont get me wrong but look into studying further into game development if you dont want to be trapped in the ways of old, id reccomend unreal engine for 3d gaming and brushing up on some coding.

If youre just casually making games for just your entertainment though 100% get it :3

This is my number one title for creating indie RPG games, it's brilliant and very beginner friendly. As of now I'm working on a story about a child alone in his house with only a torch as aid, that's all I can reveal as of now, wish me luck.

I love this it was great, i say 'was' because now i use MV this is great it has like 50* tileset maps that range from pirate ship to demon world and it has a wide range of sprites and characters if you want to make a wild fantasy game about angels and devils then go ahead you can make Literaly what ever you want I seriously suggest this if you have a strange idea but don't know how to start it... E.g. An adventure of getting toilet paper on the toilet, you can make it!

This is so good that I've literally no idea what I'm doing, and I'm enjoying every second of it.

My rating: 10/10

Edit;
I actually have no clue what I'm doing. I haven't even made anything. The furthest I've gone is to open up the software. And for some odd reason I enjoyed that.

After using this software for well over 2,000 hours.

I've still not made, or published a game.
It's just so fun to mess around with, there's quite a few fan-made stuff you can download to make certain fan games.

Like, Pokémon, Final Fantasy, Harvest Moon, and Golden Sun.
RGSS is quite easy to learn, and there's plenty of tutorials to help out, if you wish to make your own menus and effects and such.

Even though there's VX VX ACE and MV.
I reccommend XP is you're new to RPG Maker.

Great software. Really easy to use, yet very powerful.
A perfect all-in-one RPG game maker. Also very nice to play around with, and practice your skills. A great start for game making.

I work with both VX Ace and XP for event scripting work. While there are quite a bit more different graphic packs available for VX Ace, and the format is a little bit easier to learn, it's worth it not to discount XP. XP is cheaper, and you can really do quite a bit more graphically with it.

The main difference you hear about is XP's layers. You have three graphical layers to work with, (foundation, middle, and top), as well as an event layer that goes over all of that. I can thus stack graphical objects closer to one another in XP. I just put them on different layers. The frame rate is 20 lower than VX Ace, (40 instead of 60), but if you were going for the feel of the old Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior games, this is much closer than Ace. Regarding those layers and objects, if I want to create a castle armory that actually feels well stocked, I'd use XP instead of Ace. Ace has an easier scripting wizard for events, but there's an awful lot of online scripting available from the RPG Maker XP forums that improve your XP functionality by a wide margin.

XP and Ace both give you battler backgrounds, as well as an increased sprite size over other programs in this series. XP is from 2004, and is thus seven years older than Ace, but a lot more scripting has been done with this engine, so it isn't impossible to find help and support for whatever your project requires. If you think to yourself: "Gee, I'd really like it if my game had this feature..." ask around, someone's probably written the Ruby code for it already.

I would also point out that if you bought this software direct from program publisher Degica's website like I did, their licensing support has been super helpful getting me a steam key so I could use the Steam Workshop. (They got back to me with a working key within an hour of my first email to Licensing Support about it). This is an all around well supported program from what I've experienced in the last month since my purchase.

Bottom line: If you don't mind a steeper learning curve than VX Ace, (but there are lots of video guides out on YouTube), and your game project isn't designed with ultra sharp graphics or fast action sequences, XP is well worth your time. You'll be spending a lot of time in techy forums figuring out how to ad scripts and coding to your program, but it's not a terribly difficult program to work with.

Reviewer Qualifications: I have used VX Ace to analyze scripts/test alternate scripts for game articles on The Last Sovereign's wiki, and I am the current script debugger for the AloneXP project. (Both are adult RPGs).

Simple but powerful. That's enough.

I can't remember how long I've been using RPGXP, maybe over 7 years? Ah, don't look at the using time in Steam, it's quite misleading huh?I have never developed an RPG with RMXP though. RPGXP ends up being a 'toy' in my computer. Anyway, if you'd like to create your own world of RPG, I would recommend RPGXP.

It may be a little tough for beginners. But you'll soon get used to it.

What? You prefer 3D games? Then don't buy it. RPGXP won't help you realize your 3D game dream.

RPGXP has:
  • 3 map layers and 1 event layer - I'd provide you with Unlimited Layers Display System script if you like.
  • 3 lists of event commands - some of them are really buggy.
  • Ruby script editor - note that the version of Ruby is 1.8.x, therefore a lot of new features are not supported.
  • A help document - a good reference, though it has a few mistakes.

If you have any questions when using this software. Don't hesitate to go here for more help. It's a Chinese website, but it's okay to ask in English.

Dreamworld is in our hands.

Okay, let me make this perfectly clear. I have used the RPG Maker series since around the time 2k3 came out illegally, and am able to say that I've used it for longer than what my individual hours say in each of the programs on Steam. With that said, I can hardly recommend this enough for those who want to start using the series in an easy enough manner (what with the scripts that are already out there and so on).

Of course, in order to create your own content, be ready to shed lots of blood, sweat, and tears (metaphorically)... if you don't feel like buying DLC content from somewhere that actually is supported by RPG Maker. Just making this perfectly clear right now.

This program gets a big thumbs up from me. My wife and I homeschool our children. I have used RPG Maker to create educational games for me kids to help with their homeschooling. For my kids (ranging 7-11) this is perfect. They can play a game, learn and have fun all at the same time.
It might not be the perfect purpose for this program, yet it is. I can create something that lasts for about 15 mins. Pack enough info into it that my children retain it and ask to play again.

A Perfect All-in-one RPG Maker which is highly recommended for newbies as it's user friendly, add your own resources and its a lot better than the other RPG Makers where you need to pay more for extra resources, etc. And now for the first time it supports Scripts, Yes! you can add your own scripts the way you want. You can show off your creativity by making cool games on your own!

Definitely Recommended for those who wanna learn creating games, It's a start

Nostalgic and convenient. Easy to grasp and the best mapping system, as you all know it.
It DOES work with 64-bit operating systems.
Do not be afraid to buy it.
Also, within the next 2 years, if all go well, there will be a game of my own here.

ps. Thanks, Don Miguel.

8.6/10 - Publish a game as easy as 1-2-3

My timer is way off. I have this game installed on another PC. Love this RPG maker. I was able to create my own RPG game. Is it good? No.. Not yet, but I still really love it. I'm also confident that with more skill and practive I could complete a decent game.

There are some pretty amazing tutorial videos on the net to support your aspirations to develope a game. This program really does the hard work and allows you to focus on maps, characters and events. Don't be fooled though even though this program makes development easy but it's still really time consuming and hard.

I would say this RPG maker lacks in template textures and downloadable content. Some of the other makers have so much content packs that you can add.

Overall, $25 is an amazing deal. Usually on sale! Must try.

While later versions of RPG Maker are considerably more capable and user friendly, the one thing I prefer about this version is the ability to "Resize" your own sprites. The size of the sprites is directly proportional to the size of the image, so if you want a taller character he'll be taller ingame.

This is not a magical game maker, they've done the programming. It's up to you to make the game. Triggers, story, characters, all yours. While plenty of content is provided right of the bat, I prefer to create my own images and music. This can either be done in menu, or simply by moving files into the appropriate folders.

If you've used level editors, you should be able to flow comfortably into the interface and you can do almost anything, however this has no option for cutscenes. That being said, reasonable quality images can be imported (640x480 or less) Nothing you make will ever be graphically impressive, but it's really not the point. If I'm correct the amazing title "To the Moon" was made using this software.

The item/character customization is pretty much complete, I was actually able to create an accessible book using dialogue chains. Heck, you could even write a "Choose your own adventure" with the dialogue chains. Every stat is alterable as well, even the amount of experience required to level up. If you want to be in depth enough, fight animations and sounds can be replaced.

Just bare in mind, there is nothing casual about this process, it is time consuming, but if it's your thing, it's time well spent.

The newer versions Ace and MV improve upon this classic. But in some details XP is still better. Take the one that best suits your needs. RPG Maker XP is a great piece of software that eases many parts of the process of developing a classic rpg game.

Don't let my limited playtime fool you, I used it a lot before it was available on steam (60 to 100 hours or so).

Pretty awesome game, i can get addicted into making games in this and i think it is great for developing your first RPG game, The positives are: Easy to use, Fun to make, And you can also make your own custom characters. I cant really think of any negatives that bother me in any way, although it isnt perfect its still a great software that you can use to make a game (Although i use it to just screw around and stuff.) You should probaly get it this christmas, as it is only $4.99.

i lile this software had to google to start what the layer do ect but after that i learnt it with in 2 or 3 days you can chose to do no scripting but i like to mess around with the code to see what it dose good for new game developer and samll developers that are looking to mke a game it also lets you encrypt your game so no one esle can edit your game (to edit it in the futer you will need a unencryted game files) it is also very very easy to make games with this all you have to do is click on what you want to do next you can inport music graphics ect and if i went on all about what i like about this it woudl be extreamly long

p.s would recommend buying during steam sales its £2.45 in the uk very cheap and £18.99 when not on sale

You will not believe how much I love this program. It's nice and easy to use (even for some children) and there's a lot of customization! You can even import your own charas, tilesets, music, sounds, titles, Game Overs, fogs and more! And if you're quite skilled enough, you can give some scripting and events a try! Well, you can download someone else's scripts too, only if they wish to share them. If you're suddenly confused or you're having some trouble figuring out something, you can always watch some tutorial videos to help you progress further!

Oh, and do you know this is also the home of Ao Oni? I hope so.

So yeah, I highly recommend RPG Maker XP. If you want, you can try RPG Maker VX Ace or RPG Maker 2000/2003, I don't know what do you prefer, but I still gotta stay with this program.

The differences between this version and the newer version are:
+ price(compared to VX Ace)
+ engine boots in 5 seconds on my laptop (might be the fastest game engine startup available on Steam by a wide margin)
- default resource map content less versatile(compared to VX Ace)
- smallest map size larger than smallest map size available on newest version(VX Ace)
- no Character Generator
- no Shadow Pencil
- no Region Edit mode
- no 1/8 map button display
- no by default facial closeups when speaking to a character(compared to VX Ace)
- scripting is version Ruby GSS 1, VX version is Ruby GSS 3
- no right click quick transfer option (map to map connections... neccessary to do it the long way each time)
- no video imports?(haven't tested this yet, but the reason I got VX Ace was because it could bring in video files - videos for storyline or whatever else - Ogg format)

Other than all that... it works. Both engines have Android compatibility through an Android app on Google Play.

Most popular RPG maker version, and for good reason. Mapping is better than at VX, it was first RPGM-game with ruby programming langune (which allows you to use custom scripts to do a lot of diffirent things), and now it is at steam for 20 €. Try 30 day trial at the program`s website and if you like it, try get it at this sale. It`s very cool tool for RPGs.

This product is worth way more than what you pay. Fun and easy to use as soon as you learn the basics.
HOWEVER before buying it read this.

RPG Maker XP is a younger version than the VX. Unlike the VX the XP does not have expensive DLCs.
The RPG Maker XP comes with a bunch of sprites and sounds to enjoy as soon as you get it. A bit limited though.
That is because the RPG Maker XP is a tool for the creative people, who make their own sprites, sounds etc.
If you are a creative person with patience this could be the tool for you!

Overall RPG Maker XP is hard to use at first BUT as soon as you get slightly used to the tools you will be greatly rewarded.
Took me 2 hours to learn the basics. Note: I'm not the sharpest knife in the shed, so you will probobly et it way before I did.
If you are still confused and fustrated there are many guides on the web that tells you how to use RPG Maker XP.
Even small things that will be done will feel awesome for you.

And BEST of all! You can share the games you make with your friends!
As soon as you learn the basics you will be greatly rewarded and feel awesome about it and yourself. Take pride in your games. Tell your stories and let your tales grow far and wide with your friends.

I give the RPG Maker XP a 10/10. It is very fun and easy to use. And the creative people have alot of space to challange themselves with.

If you are not the creative person, or have creative friends I would recomend you buy the VX and some DLCs.
