I'm an old guy. Old is subjective, so allow me to elaborate: I'm in my middle 30s. I don't like fighter games and Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 immediately struck me as another Tekken or Street Fighter style game. So now you're probably wondering why I bought the game...
Well it's a little embarassing to admit, but I began watching Naruto over ten years ago back when I was all about the anime. I don't watch much anime anymore, but, even at my current age I still keep up to date with Naruto. The game came on sale, and because of my love for the show, I had to at least give it a try.
I was pleasantly surprised. Sure, the game comes with all those natural frustrations that any fighter comes with, but when compared to Tekken or Street Fighter it was IMHO easier, or maybe over all these years I've just gotten better at button mashing heh. I had more fun playing this game then I ever had playing any fighter game I ever have in the past.
The story is what kept me captivated. No, it's not a unique story which I was hoping for, actually, it's just a bunch of Naruto episodes rehashed into a graphical game.. but in some cases the dialog was slightly different, some scenes had been changed a little bit here and there... still it kept me playing it, all the way right up to the end where I'm currently stuck on the final boss at the time of writing this. I will beat it. :) Eventually..heh..
I can't comment on the multiplayer portion of this game. Since I'm not a fan of fighters I didn't even want to try it. Maybe that was a bad judgement call since I seem to be "okay" at this particular fighter, but if you're into story rich games you won't find one much better than this.
If you don't keep up with the Naruto anime can you still be entertained by this game? Yes. But, in that case, I would highly recommend you enjoy fighter games then, since without the story of Naruto that's really all this game is in a nutshell.
The story focuses on the great ninja war arc (Obito & Madara Uchida), and without prior Naruto knowledge then the story can leave a person awfully confused as to what's actually going on.
My hours played are all story mode hours, and should give any reader considering this game a good idea of how long it will take to get from start, to finish.
Story: 10/10 (with prior Naruto knowledge)
Configurable Options: 3/10 (crappy port options)
Definitely a game to look into if you're interested.
I also highly recommend playing this with a controller. I haven't tried to play this with a keyboard and mouse, but the mere idea of that makes me cringe.
