About This Game

MAN MEETS MAGIC & MACHINE. The year is 2054. Magic has returned to the world, awakening powerful creatures of myth and legend. Technology merges with flesh and consciousness. Elves, trolls, orks and dwarves walk among us, while ruthless corporations bleed the world dry. You are a shadowrunner - a mercenary living on the fringes of society, in the shadows of massive corporate arcologies, surviving day-by-day on skill and instinct alone. When the powerful or the desperate need a job done, you get it done... by any means necessary.

In the urban sprawl of the Seattle metroplex, the search for a mysterious killer sets you on a trail that leads from the darkest slums to the city’s most powerful megacorps. You will need to tread carefully, enlist the aid of other runners, and master powerful forces of technology and magic in order to emerge from the shadows of Seattle unscathed.

The unique cyberpunk-meets-fantasy world of Shadowrun has gained a huge cult following since its creation nearly 25 years ago. Now, creator Jordan Weisman returns to the world of Shadowrun, modernizing this classic game setting as a single player, turn-based tactical RPG.

Key Features

  • Gripping Tactical Combat: When you’re running the shadows, every turn matters. Choose your actions wisely - move to better cover, charge into melee, or lob a fireball into a crowd of enemies. With the variety of weapons and spells at your disposal, every turn is filled with meaningful choices. A successful run requires commanding a team of runners with the right balance of combat, tech, and magical abilities.
  • Skill-Based Character Progression: Choose a starting character archetype and build from there! Street Samurai and Physical Adepts use advanced combat skills to dominate the battlefield, Shamans and Mages summon powerful allies and cast deadly spells, while Riggers and Deckers provide critical technological support, projecting their consciousness directly into drones and computer systems. Shadowrun Returns’ classless skill system allows you to grow your character in any direction you choose. Want to start summoning spirits as an ork Shaman and evolve into a cybered-up weapon specialist? Do it!
  • Engaging 2D/3D Art Style: Shadowrun Returns mixes dynamic 3D characters and lighting with a vibrant, hand-painted environment. Illustrated character portraits bring every conversation to life. Explore a world filled with detail, from the slums of the Redmond Barrens to the extravagant offices of powerful corporations.

Well i grew up playing the SNES game Shadow Runners and It was a title that I was quite fond of. I saw this game on steam one day and I thought taking a chance on a purchase was a no brainer...

I'm glad I did.

While it is not an official sequal to the SNES classic the story does continue on in the same shadowrun world. The story is a little cliche' you play a shadow runner avenging the death of your friend. I don't want to give away too much of the plot as the campaign is quite small and unfortunately linear however the story and gameplay do create an enjoyable experience. There are many different character classes. Some specialise in close or ranged combat. Others specialise in magic and summoning. There is also a decker class that specializes in breaking into computers and invading cyberspace. You get a choice of how you would like to play the game based on Karma (attribute points) to apply to your skills. Party Combat itself is fun although not difficult just requires basic tactical common sense.

Overall I have really enjoyed the experience and recommend this game 100% when its on sale. Thanks to the steam workshop there is some replayability however the main story is only worth one playthrough. I hear the other Shadowrun games on steam are even better so I am excited to try!

Took 17 hours to complete.

I loved it!

There is a LOT of reading. All dialogue, and this game has a lot of story content, is text based.

Good for playing 5 min or 5 hours at a time.

The combat is Xcom like, graphics and animations are less of a focus though.

The world seems well developed, classes seem balanced enough. It's all turn based, which is great for me. There is nothing that happens that you need to respond to in any fixed amount of time. This means you can get up and get a drink in the middle of combat with no trouble, or during a dialogue sequence. You can save at almost any point as well. This helps when you don't know how long you are going to be able to play for.

This Game Is Just Plain Old Great!! If you like this type game, Shadowrun the book and dice game, or old school turn based table top games, than you can't go wrong.

This game was a suprise for me. I did not now about Shadowrun universe before, and i was kind of dumbstruck about the setting. Think DnD with cyberpunk. This alone made me buy this game, and this beauty did not disappoint me.

Combat is like the X-COM Enemy Within. Not detailed as much but still, enjoyable. The campaign is interesting (though not as much as dragonfall) and you can download more campaigns through steam workshop. There are many campaigns there and some of them are very, very good. Have I mentioned the setting is ♥♥♥♥ing awesome?

This is an awesome game and it deserves it's pricetag.

I really enjoyed this CRPG - some reviews gave it a negative rating saying the other Shadowrun game(s) is/are better, but considering I had fun with this fun it wouldn't be fair to rate it on anything but its own merit.

Check it out, if you like CRPGs you'll like this game. Combat was a little lackluster, but the story and characters kept me entertained throughout the duration.

If you're a big fan of whacky cyberpunk storytelling and XCOM: Enemy Unknown style gameplay then you'll be at home here. The story is fairly enjoyable, though it goes all over the place. I never found myself getting attached the main characters in Dead Man's Switch (the default campaign), but the game's still worth the play. Now, from what I understand the Workshop campagins for this game can be quite good, but unfortunately I haven't played any of them and can't speak for that side of the game. The campaign editor does come with the game, but it seems very daunting to learn how to use to make your own missions. Still, the game's worth it just for default campaign. 7/10

An enjoyable isometric RPG set in a cyberpunk Shadowrun universe. Really enjoyed the story but have failed to finish it twice. Third time lucky!

★★★★☆

For a better introduction to Shadowrun, play Shadowrun: Dragonfall instead.

The Good
+ The game picks up after you find the killer.
+ An interesting theme regarding broken families and how they are exploited.
+ Provides a preachy liberal message as is Shadowrun tradition.
+ Great ending.

The Bad
- Mediocre first half of the game.
- Team banter is almost entirely absent, missions feel like it's just you with a bunch of puppets.
- Most NPCs aren't very fleshed out though there are exceptions.

Worth a try if you're already a fan.

Story lasts for 8-10h and is highly linear without a lot of room (actually none) for own decisions which affect the story in any way. In my opinion Shadowrun Returns is a well executed mix between Fallout 2 and XCOM although its lacking the depth of both titles.

However, its not a bad game especially for people who need an introduction to the Shadowrun world.

PS: Cover doesnt matter.

8/10 Pretty fun game.

Good - I enjoy the story and there are choices.

Ok - The gameplay is alright some character builds seem to be not too great. There is character customization however not a lot of it.

Bad - The choices dont really have much affect on the game other then acting like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ or not however acting like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ doesnt change much other than people dont like talking to you.

Frankly, I'll give anything that has Shadowrun in the name a try. Kind of like I used to be with Battletech. I like the atmosphere of the game. I like the turn based combat. I'm not a youngster anymore, so I can't keep up with the fast muscle responses of these Call of Duty gurus. This is fun, has a little strategy and tactics to it, has a little problem solving, and has a nice cyberpunky atmosphere. I like it.

Quite good old school RPG game! Set in the cyberpunk world of Shadowrun (duh!) you take the roll of an investigator detective trying to solve the murder of his friend. The story is decent and the variety of classes/skills/weapons is quite big. Enjoyable!

Got this in the bundle due to the sale.

At first, it's very interesting and immersive - there's a lot of room to mess around and play like you want. As the story drags on, however, it becomes more linear, less interesting, and incredibly repetitive. The final run was tedious and required no thought, and none of my final decisions or demeanor ingame really seemed to matter.

I have not played any of the other games in the series, or the fanmade modules for this game, but I do not recommend this game at full price. Hopefully Dragonfall and Hong Kong will be better.
