I will not support Fatshark after there treatment of the community in this game.

Servers are dead. Game is laggy. Game mechanics are broken or just do not work as intended.
This game had so much potential and the dropped the ball. I would reccomend getting Mount and Blade Warband instead.

I used to adore this game. Since alpha, I had strived to get better and better. Sure the game was laggy and all, but the game still had a pretty high skill cap, and on a high level the combat was pretty different from something like Warband because of the dodges and specials. It was also much simpler than War of the Roses. I haven't played in a while, but since alpha the game has been intolerably laggy in half the games I have played, but instead of fixing this, the developers added more and more DLC and whatnot. I also believe that the competitive scene and the community in general is more or less dead by now, and there won't be any more updates to this completely unpolished game. The game had potential in the alpha, and I had a lot of fun with it, but now it's definitely not worth the price.

Unsuported game, many bugs that could be easily fixed, blatanty not telling the truth on whats happening on the devs behalf and allowing you to still buy the game for a time, then refunding you for the Valhalla edition with 20 games you will never play. Gross customer service.

don't buy this game, it has no community only 2 populated servers and very stale feeling melee combat. the customization is great however at least as far as cosmetics are concerned. and the 2 servers that are inhabited are all full of rank 60 UBER-1337-HOLIERTHANTHOU-DOUCHECANNOES. can't recommend it.

Very few players on servers, almost "dead". And since there's only multiplayer, and no single player. I cannot recommend this game to anyone.

Ohh man this is so sad, i really love the third person brutality of this game, not many in the viking genre had these tence battles! and since im from Norway near the viking town Tønsberg i love playing the barbars! I sent Paradox message asking for current game statement since we had not heard from them awhile... then i got sad news back...

Statement regarding the War franchise
Greetings community!

We are writing you today to inform you what is happening with the War franchise, most importantly War of the Vikings but also its predecessor War of the Roses. This announcement has been some time in the making and has been no easy conclusion, yet we aim to be as transparent as possible. So, with no further ado, here is what is happening.
We are stopping sales of the Valhalla edition - effective immediately
All Valhalla owners will receive a large selection of Paradox Interactive's games on steam (added directly to their steam libraries), estimated value circa $800 as compensation. This will appear within a few days
Valhalla owners will also keep their Valhalla privileges - nothing will change here
War of the Vikings will see two patches to increase stability and solve major issues - after this we will cease patching and have no plans to support the game further through updates/fixes
Servers will continue to stay active until further notice
War of the Roses will see no further development
Why are we doing this? To put it simple and straight forward; We've looked at this from every single angle (that's why it's taken time for us to come to this conclusion) over and over and we just can't find a way where we can keep developing the games without operating at a loss. War of the Vikings did not live up to our expectations and we could not find a reasonable scenario where we could bring it up to par quality wise.

We have chosen to patch Vikings in order to bring it to a better state, so that current players can continue to enjoy what we have today with increased stability.

Sincerely,
The War Team
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can understand its not cool to have a productive team working on a dead title... but there are so much you should have done before... is it like you guys are making a game without thinking or having the funding for a period of time after launch.. Patching and making your game baby shine!

Make the game F2P and add some cosmetics like beards etc. or maps or DLC stuff , seems like this game has alot of servers running. Its cool as H... when playing with friends so i dont get it, but that is why you are publishers and im not im sure ! Its really sad seeing this leave and hate that its called dead :(.

I think i will not support anymore of your Games from now on, i feel like this is a trending strategy.. seeing it more and more.

Next time, have your baby and feed it with content and care for it! dont tuckle it in a blanket with 2 patches and throw it in the bin and act like we "wallet" dont understand whats going on ! Peace

This game received a lot of bad press and reviews and hate. Honestly, I can't understand why. It had a suboptimal start with some bugs and netcode-issues, but in it's current state it's an amazing game. I'm a dedicated gamer with over 300 games on my account, I'm gaming excessively for 25 years now and I would go as far to say that this is the best multiplayer-game I ever played. The graphics are the most beautiful I've ever seen in a game, a true piece of art. Actually the game in motion looks much better than the screenshots. The maps are extremly well designed and detailed, setting a new standard. You can literally see the great amounts of love that the devs put into them. Also sounds and music add nicely to the atmosphere and complete the great presentation. The gameplay itself is simple in it's elements but is in result very deep and skill-based. Easy to understand, but hard to master, like it ideally should be. The combat is fast, tactical, uncomplicated and satisfying. All upgrades you can unlock are purely for prestige and visuals, which is great since it doesn't create disadvantages for new players while it's still rewarding. Only drawback of this game is the small community, which makes it difficult to find other players early in the morning and in the middle of the night, but it doesn't bother at the rest of the day. Another little issue might be the beserker-class, which rewards spamming a bit too much. The game would be better without them but I don't see it as a serious issue since berserkers have very limited potential. In conclusion I got to say it makes me really sad to see that such a beautiful game doesn't get the attention it deserves, while millions of people pay 60 bucks for CoD every year. Makes me honestly question the future of gaming, it's industry and it's consumers. I guess the low success is a combination of bad marketing and the fact that most players today get frustrated by a game which requires a few hours to develop decent skills in, compared to CoD where you just need to know how to pull a trigger. And surely this game had a tough start, but every major multiplayer-game has these days. In this case community and publisher/devs were sadly very impatient, which is disappointing. But even more I'm disappointed by the market (respectively consumers), since it apparently doesn't reward an elaborated, ambitious, well-designed game which hasn't an advertising-budget of billions and in which you will get killed many times in the beginning since it's really skill-based and requires some learning.

Developer seriously confused about how to fix issues and not ♥♥♥♥ off customers. Instead of fixing game, releases new classes for $5 DLC.

I would never recommend this game to anyone.

Wow.. I can't even describe how bad the game is.. It's basicly A Un-updated game... It's actually looking like it'll be a P2W game soon.. And the developers Fired their Crew.. AND WENT ON "vacation" HOURS later.. And they've been on "VACATION" for 2-3 months Aparently..? And on top of that. The game, Can't even get to the main menu before crashing.. THIS being during when they went on vacation.. YOU literally cant even run the game to judge it!! With that in mind.. I'd say they probably "vacation" A.K.A. dropped the game and ran.. I Don't even know if they'll make any more updates considering their "vacation" has been.. 2-3 months?.. I think the longest vacation i've had is like.. 4-5 days.. Either they quit. Or they're lazy as hell.

(WARNING) DO NOT BUY THIS GAME

Faster paced that WOTR, but also more skill based. The game has been given different dynamics in how to fight like the addition of dodge attacks, sprinting, and high risk, high reward special attacks.

This game has a steep learning curve, but really separates the great players from the average. All the weapons have their strength and weakenesses compared with the other weapons. A really good addition is that classes are given different traits and abilities that make and define them as truly unique. People seem to carry on about poor net coding and lag. To be honest, lag barely occurs any more unless you have high ping (which obviously happens anyway).

Not to mention, the game looks fantastic and the scenery and attention to detail is veryu good. Warriors yell out taunts and battle cries as they clash with the enemy, or yell out warnings if archers are shooting at them. You can customize your warrior to become a beautiful champion of war, and create shields that will cause your hearth and hold to swell with pride!

Wonderful game...Get it!

A very strategic game when it comes to combat. I love how the game is based on skill and not your armour etc.
However I can hardly play the game as it keeps crashing, please fix it!

War of the Vikings is a multiplayer only, melee combat game which uses a slash and parry system.
Pros:
GREAT!! community (I can't stress that enough)
Vikings
Graphics are stunning
Skill based

Cons:
Small-ish amount of players
A few bugs/crashes/latency issues
Hard to start (very steep learning curve)

This game is great, I have not been able to stop playing since I got it. It feels like its declining in players but there are always populated servers, you might have to deal with a slightly higher than ideal latency. The graphics are amazing even on low settings. Its skill based so weapons in the same category perform the same. You can choose from:
-One handed swords
-One handed axes
-Two handed axes
-Spears
-Bows
There are a number of classes that have different perks and weapon specialization eg. the shieldmaiden uses a spear and a large shield while the berserker holds a one handed weapon in each hand. There are a million different combinations as far as classes, weapons and perks go. There are also a vast number of color patterns that get better as your rank increases. You can also choose the head and gender of most classes along with around 10 different facial hair options. The shields are also customizable, also with a million combinations as far as patterns go. The maps range from fairly large for conquest or domination to very small for arena like gameplay. There is a fair amount of historical accuracy (no horned helmets or plate armor) and the dialogue and music feels very authentic. The maps are gorgeous and sometimes I find myself staring off into the distance at a snowcapped mountain or green hill.
Bottom line:
I cannot recommend this game enough. It has its flaws but I think you will find the flaws get blurred out by the good parts. The experience is more than worth the money.

Summary: Although a good concept, War of the Vikings is fundamentally flawed. Is historical credibility is appalling, the game mechanics perform badly, it is not an approachable game for a newcomer or casual player, and there is no good motivation to continue playing it.

Full review:

Although it might first appear as an historical title, War of the Vikings fails miserably in this regard. Weapons include 15th century daggers, 16th century pikes, and so on, but miss out on many period weapons (such as seaxes, after which the Saxons were named!). Armour is worse, with horned helmets, feathered headgear and armours from the middle-east. There are no historical battle sites and maps are simply generic locations... including epic towering monastaries or Skyrim-esque glaciers. And the in-game warriors can do lots of other non-historical things, all the way from running around impaled with multiple javelins through to techno-dancing. Although there is no obligation for developers to stick to fact, the flights of fantasy in this game really detracts from the historical immersion.

But War of the Vikings does not make up for it with game play. The mechanics are random in places, with weapons simply passing through without damage, or you can often do more damage with the haft of the axe than the head of it. Server glitches and crashes are common place, even on sparsely-populated servers. This level of unreliability (even on ping-limited servers, using good computers with good connections) is extremely frustrating. Even the graphics, which are okay, are really demanding on even good computer systems. You really need a first-class Internet connection and top-notch machine with a superb frame rate to even contemplate this title.

From the perspective of someone who has never played other hand-to-hand combat games, the learning curve on War of the Vikings is brutal. There is scant documentation (only a single splash screen showing the key presses) and a woefully inadequate tutorial. There is no single-player game to train you up nor are there any matched-skill servers. The community comprises mostly elite veterans and you can expect to spend a lot of time staring at the spawn-in screen. While there are some exceptions, I have found a disproportinate level of arrogance and contempt in games. Even the so-called "friendly clans" take delight in abusing inexperienced players.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, there is no motivation to play. The weapons/armour are all equal in combat value. This is okay in terms of balance, but for a modest amount of playtime, you can get any loadout and perks. Thus upgrades are not an incentive to play. The ability to purchase expensive-looking clothes and capes might appeal to some, but it is not a huge motivation to persevere with being cut down time after time. The Steam achievements totally lack imagination and are mostly way beyond the reach of the average player, who just wants to recreate the Viking/Saxon battle experience.

Although there are some nice touches (for example the use of Old English/Icelandic for the voices and a wonderful soundtrack), this game is frustrating and quickly becomes tedious. Out of a love of this era of history, I have stuck with it and have trained hard at it, but it remains demoralising and uninspiring. This is a pity because the idea has potential. But as it stands at present, it is simply not worth the effort.
