Update 1.5b

Update 1.5b
Greetings community!

Update 1.5b is finally out and this is the feature list:

- Fixed occasionally occuring silent melee hits
- Improved client to server synchronization
- Fixed fine positioning sync issue
- Momentum and angle of impact tweaked to increase minimum damage
- Removed melee double hit exploit using feinting
- Fixed stamina drain bug when hitting dropped shields
- Fixed Pitched Battle mode tie break end condition server crash
- Shield on back only reduces damage and does not protect when knocked down
- Netcode optimizations

We've done a number of optimizations as well as addressing some issues of the switch to server side hit detection. Synchronization code between server and client has been optimized to allow for more accurate predictioning and hit detection, and this has also have had good effects on reducing the prediction warping.

Furthermore we've adressed a fine positioning issue (thanks IG Offen) where players standing still sometimes could differ up to 20cm in position sync.

Silent hits should be a lot less frequent with this patch. You may however still occasionally experience a slight delay to it sometimes that corresponds to your ping to the server.

Momentum and angle of impact has been tweaked to raise the minimum damage. A lot of players got the impression that the wide spread in damage made it feel a little inconsistent. You still need good timing & aim to maximize the damage though.

Another tweak that has been made with the o so useful shields, is that they no longer fully protect when hanging on the back. Damage is reduced to about half the original damage, and when you're knocked down they do not protect at all. These adjustments have been made primarily to discourage fighting with your back towards the enemy, and the latter to avoid the sometimes rediculous difficulty in finishing off a knocked down player with a shield on his/hers back.

We also have fixed the bug in Pitched Battle mode where the server sometimes would crash in the tiebreak end condition, which is an old issue originating back to the first beta version I've been told.

We hope you enjoy the game!

/Lead Dev

Well last patch rolled in today... So after more than a year playing this game I decided to exercise my rights of writing a review.
Do NOT under any circumstances buy this game. Not even in a sale. It's completely broken. Oh boy where to start and where to finish with this game... The netcode is even worse than what it was during early Alpha/Beta stages or the released version for that matter. It's pretty much unplayable in this state today, with players "teleporting" even with low or average pings, due to bad netcoding. Ghost hits are still present in this game completely removing the "skill factor" and replacing it with something like a "luck factor" due to the the bad netcoding resulting in a lagfest. So many map glitches still present... You can even feint an attack and the opponent would get damaged out of nowhere...
This is just bad, I don't want to continue writing such a negative review for a game I loved during early Alpha/Beta stages but they left us, unfortunately, with no choice. If you think the released version of WotV was bad, just take a look at the game at its current state. Basically the only thing they got right after so many patches are the shields. But that's about it, the rest of the game is broken.

It was a good game. Fast-paced and combat intensive. Although sometimes laggy and player with high ping are a little troublesome but everything is alright and playable. I had fun. However the latest Santa-update 1.5 patch totally destroyed the game. The hit detection are weird. You hack and hash your enemy and he splashes blood everywhere but just don't die. Then you died because of hit from nowhere. This is common. You will also meet people teleporting or move like phantom. These problems exist almost in everyone who still play this game (no more than 50 every day). You won't meet player easily since most server are ghost server. Luckily when you get into one with 10 players, you either get kicked out by high PING or play and meet all freaking phenomenon stated above. I loved this game and bought Blood Eagle Edition and Valhalla Edition in ridiculous price because it WAS a good game. But the dev team killed it, TWICE.

The development team has been disbanded and the publishing company has killed the entire franchise. This game had an incredible amount of potential, and it has all been destroyed by horrible management, marketing and Battlefield 4 level network errors. A year ago, I would've recommended everyone purchase this game. 8 months ago I would have said if you enjoyed melee combat games, it's pretty good. Now, I can confidently say, it's simply a matter of time before the plug is pulled so to speak. Purchase War of the Vikings ONLY if you want to go down with the sinking ship. There is fun to be had and beauty to be admired, but it's all on borrowed time now. I'll miss this community, because in truth none of us know how much longer we'll have servers to play on.

TLDR;
Devs abandoned the game.
Publisher is notoriously profit over quality focused.
Game WILL be shut down soon, it's announced in the forums in a political jargon filled post.
Don't buy.

Pre-Release Review

First: I played it more on my previous steam account.

Short review:
Got my head chopped off by a single heavy hit. 8/10.

Longer review:
Seriously, this game has a problem. It's not the game itself, it's the lack of players. This game is awesome and has one- if not the best melee combat implementation ever. Period. Obviously some of those casual, left mouse button spamming, "easy" kind of players don't like that and brag about it, because they want on-click-action and ♥♥♥♥. If you are that kind of "player" please do not play this game. Better play some WoW or other clickery ♥♥♥♥.

Pros:
+ beautiful graphics
+ nice animations and fluid gameplay
+ kickass combat system
+ no pay 2 win
+ much customization

Negs:
- lack of players
- berserkers (seriously...they ♥♥♥♥ed it up a little bit with those LMB spamming berserkers)

8/10

This is a very good and entertaining online only kill-fest. Modelling and overall feel are good. Only downside is lack of players at the moment and some of the kit requires high level to unlock. But overall i would recomend this game highly.

Game was great, but developers abandoned it in an unfinished state, and now it's deserted.
Do not buy this game.

I bought this game in the very early release stage. It was pretty much unplayable as it was so buggy. Still fun! I just came back after having bought it in October of 2013. Seems like beta should be done and it's ready to roll right? Nope. Still in beta. So this was my experience today. I reinstalled the game, I loaded it up, Paradox forces you to make an account because we all know how well that goes over with gamers having to make an account just to play a game. I get in, I go to the tutorial to get familiar with the game again, I hit W, started moving forward, left clicked my mouse and the game ♥♥♥♥ing crashes. Pushed one button and it crashed. Probably an omen, stay away. Give it time and it might be ok. For now? No.

Very fun and good game until broken by moronic publisher/devs. Said moronic publisher/developers does not acknowledge mistakes and are totally fine with effectively destroying a game and keep selling it.
It was one of my favourite games but now it's just ♥♥♥♥♥♥ :<
Don't waste your money on this or anything else from paradox interactive.

War of the vikings has been abandoned by players and developers alike. It had so much potential, ruined by trying to become a mainstream game that caters to the masses (no stabbing, one hit kill button, no shield breaking etc). Now even if you loved the game, there are never more than 20 players online worldwide at once. The game is dead, and that is where it should stay.

This game had so much potential, it had implemented some mechanics that gave it the chance to be so much fun. But then, they decided, lets limit that fun. Warriors cannot sprint without putting their weapon on their backs, for some reason, this was implemented, i am assuming to stop people from sprinting into combat swinging? but that couldn't be it, because that would add so much fun to the game.
But, probably the worst decision that was made, was to add an energy bar, i guess it is to stop people from swinging a lot, but that's what people wanted from this game, they wanted that fast paced action packed feeling, only to be greeted with absurdly unrealistic limitations. I want to have to block 15-20 swings in a 10 second fight, i want that thrill, that rush, the feeling one might expect from being a viking. But instead we are given a slow game, that makes it feel like we are all terribly hung over warriors, decades past our prime swinging heavy sticks, losing our breath after just a bare few swings. gone are the days warriors trained to endure i guess.

I just feel massively let down by this game, i thought it was going to be what war of the roses almost was before it was drenched in honey, making combat slow and boring. Although, the game might have changed? i haven't really been able to play it to test since a few months after it came out, considering how no one plays the game anymore. Its all a massive shame, i had high hopes, now i guess all i can do is wait for mount and blade 2, and hope they don't destroy that too, by catering to the slow of block.

If you want to buy this game right now, and you have never played it...don't. This game had ENORMOUS amounts of potential in the first stages of it, but the dev team has disbanded and the game is no longer the addicting market tank it was. But, if you want to go back to this game after not playing it since the first stages, like I did, try it. You probably will be disappointed with what it has become, but you still might enjoy it.

Very nicely detailed dark age Viking combat sim with mechanics akin to Mount&Blade. I was able to find a group of players on a single server to jump in with. Other than that there's not much more to report. Wait for sale and add it to your collection of Medieval games.

DONT BUY.
At first it seemed like a decent fast-paced close combat game to buy and also for those who like the whole viking universe it would seem like a decent purchase, but it's deffinetly NOT.

In the early stages it was OK, but still the price was way too high for what the game has to offer:
-No singleplayer campaign.
-A sorry excuse for a tutorial.
-Fast action multiplayer matches, but then again there are very few modes and they are all similar.
-Few different customizable classes (they actually dont feel like a 'rock-paper-scissor' balance, they are just the same garbagge with different colour).

And now the things about the game the developers didn't intend but happened anyway:
-Constant balance issues.
-Constant server crashes from early alpha to the present.
-Few active servers and most of them in USA (for us playing from another country, the lagg makes this game more interesting).
-Very poor technichal support (just look at the dates from the patch fixes).
-Overral very lazy design in any aspect.

In short terms, this game was a rip-off. I sincerely feel like the team that made this game invested little to no effort in making it and took quite a bunch of money to run away with.
It is the first time i feel robbed and violated because of a steam purchase, but i guarantee that at least with this Fatshark company, it's going to be the last.

Never buy from them, don't even accept any of their games for free.

I loved the game in alpha, however seemed like they where not happy with the game even though a lot of people where complaining about the newer updates... i took a break from the game for a bout 1 year and now the game is absolute ♥♥♥♥... do not buy this game unless you are willing to play laggy matches with unbalanced weapons.
