An Environmental Puzzle Game About Family, Grit, and Survival.

Grays roam the land, largely in the absence of human interference. These aren't your typical Zed -- theirs is a very different sort of apocalypse. Animals spontaneously transform into twisted, violent beings. The earth decays, collapsing into a network of abysses. The wilderness thickens.

It has been nine years since That Day when it all started. Pockets of humanity still exist, but are ignorant of one another. Within these isolated havens people try to live as best they can -- for even in a world so broken and dark, daily life must go on.

Darrell and Mary Williams were able to build such a life inside a five-acre fenced yard out in the country. They were even secure enough in their isolated compound that they had a daughter five years after the zombie-like grays appeared.

Life carried on as normally as it could, until another refugee on the run is killed during a nearby attack. Her son is saved and taken in by the Williamses -- who do not realize that this kind action will destroy their home and threaten their entire family. They find themselves caught in the midst of a struggle between two eldritch horrors, and the path to survival is anything but clear.

Key Features

  • Solve environmental puzzles under pressure. Figure out how to use the tools, traps, and weapons in each level to clear all the Grays.
  • Nearly 100 hand-crafted levels with multiple difficulty levels ranging between casual and hardcore, developed end to end by two experienced adventure level designers.
  • Complete bonus objectives for higher scores and gold markers.
  • Follow the story of Darrell and Mary as they try to save their family from a new and unexpected threat through in-game storytelling and painted-style cutscenes.
  • Guide different members of the Williams family through branching story paths that result in one of several endings. Depending on your actions, the story may end very poorly, happily, or anywhere in between.
  • Music and sound by composer Pablo Vega provides a chilling atmosphere for players to experience.
  • Included level editor: The same editor used to make the main adventure will let you make your own levels, cutscenes, or even entire adventures.
  • Local 2-player co-op. Using two gamepads, two players on the keyboard, or any combination of the above.

Sometimes I feel like, I should play crappy looking games that I have never heard of. And somehow, im not surprised to any extend that this is, as expected utter ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t. Bad voicing, weird gameplay, weird mechanic and a somewhat boring made up story in a worse than RPGMaker interface.

I like good indie games, not this kind of stuff.

Sad to say I feel I wasted a lot of time on this. It had potential when I first started the game, disjointed story aside. Unfortunately, that potential disappeared after I figured out that everything you needed to do in the game was doing simple to absurd puzzles till they let you move to a new area, and some of the puzzles relying entirely on RNG to actually pass them successfully. A poor gameplay decision at best, since the RNG is as likely to kill you as the enemies you need it to kill, and if you die, the whole thing resets.

The fact that 90% of what you pick up is useless to kill anything in the game, even the normal animals, is irritating at best. Why a Steel axe can't kill a spider or wolf, I will never understand.

All in all, not a game I would recommend to anyone, even fans of puzzles or zombie games, since the controles are too floaty to function well and the game has a tendancy to spike lag every time the music loops, even on high end systems, which can result in killing you because your character suddenly jumps 2 or 3 tiles in the last direction you were holding instead of stopping.

Arcen Games is one of those studios that I'm really glad exists, even if I don't rush out to buy every one of their games. Each of their titles is a unique mashup of incongruous mechanics and off-kilter storylines that, if nothing else, makes for a truly singular experience. And so it is with Shattered Haven, a zombie puzzle RPG that takes you through a strange and unpredictable tale of loss by making you kill monsters in inexplicably contrived levels. The catch is that this time, the aesthetic limitations and questionable design don't really carry the game.

Shattered Haven is presented from a top-down tiled view, not unlike indie roguelikes such as Tales of Maj'Eyal. You always play as a pair of survivors in the post-apocalyptic landscape, either in co-op with another player or with the second character following you around aimlessly. The world is an open series of static screens wherein you will find portals that transport you to puzzle screens. In these, you must kill all the Grays (exotic zombies weak to iron) using whatever you find lying around, from thumbtacks to bear traps. There are quite a few interesting item interactions, but most of these are ignored in favor of aggravatingly gimmicky levels like The One That's All Pits and The One That's A Hedge Maze.

There's a fair bit going on in the overworld, too, with additional foes to deal with, NPCs to speak to, and puzzles to solve. The story is some hackneyed garbage about losing your home and super zombies, and definitely wasn't enough to keep me playing. I went into this game pretty positive, being a fan of clever puzzles and off-beat games, but this doesn't really satisfy the urge for either. If the puzzles don't turn you off, the poor writing or eye-straining graphics will.

The control scheme, lack of clarity ingame information let it down badly. The game's story does not stretch the limits of imagination as well.

Shattered Haven is a story about a man, his wife, his daughter, and a little boy they found in the forest (or so?), right after he killed the little boy's mother. 'Grays' as they call them, are essentially just zombies, and that's fine, but... you start off the game as Mary, the daughter I had mentioned earlier, goes checks up on the little boy, who just happened to be standing when he woke up. They talk, they decide to go outside. From this point on, my summery of the game will take over:

Yes, I'm aware that the game's screenshots look okay, but you expect more when you play this kind of game. You'll notice that it should be an 8-bit game, but the characters aren't, they're free-movable, which isn't very good. I didn't expect much from this game, but they sure did a lot right, and they did a lot of it wrong. In my opinion, and as others have probably stated, it feels rushed. They obviously had the artists to do the art-work for the game, but they wasted all of it on the cutscenes. Seriously, they could have released this game a year or so later, and it would have been pretty good (given they fix a few bugs, the art-work, sounds, and gameplay). I mean, when the doors disappear when you open them, and you can't close them, just walk through, doesn't that say something? The way they start "the apocalypse" is really bad. A fellow whom, you're never showed up in the story, appears at the back-gate, he asks you to help him, and of course, plot says you have to, so you do. But the thing is (cliche), Grays are following him, and the disappeared gate somehow got 'stuck', understandable, but why introduce someone new, without explaining him?

I know I ramble on about the art, but it's seriously off-putting when you have an awesome boss cutscene, completed with all the art, the cutscene beautiful, and then you get to meet said boss, and it's only about the size of your character. I know in Final Fantasy they do this a lot, but that's not what I'm going to tell you. The first "boss" I met was a red squid, turns out, the cutscene was wasted on a red squid that would only appear in the game once (or so, I haven't fully played the whole game), who kills all enemies you meet, which is really boring. No action, no nothing. The second boss, whom also had an epic cutscene wasted, only stayed in the room until you left, and it didn't even DO anything. It followed you up and down the room, only to a certain extent, meaning, you just had to walk a little up to get to the next room. How boring is that?

I played a little further, wanting to see as how it would turn out, but it wasn't any better. It was lacking the gameplay I so disliked, when you enter the next room, you find a shack. You walk into it, pull a level (the lever only extends a bridge from who knows where, they didn't have a bridge), and find it does nothing. So, you use the hammer you got to pry open a manhole, seems pretty cool, right? It was cool, until you find out the 'manhole', is really just a boring teleport to the other side. No sewer boss, no sewer monsters, NO SEWER. Actually, the hole is only a backup I would assume, Mary finds a canoe that you can use, but I teleported back to the other 'sewer' port, and it disappeared. That I can stand, but you lose the squid that helps you (frowny-face). As soon as you enter the hole, it skips to Mary's parents, they somehow got on the other side of the river with 3 canoes.

This game, it's not worth playing again, it's just not good enough. I can see playing it if I were extremely bored, but other than that, no. My final score for this game is:

5/10

I quite liked this one. It reminds me of arcade games like Boulder Dash, but with a story. Basically in each level you are set down in a maze and told to kill all the zombies. They bill it is as a puzzle game, but the emphasis is much more on avoiding the zombies, the puzzle comes into it in that usually you must kill the zombies and pick things up in a proper order. It did get a bit repetitive eventually, but I could see myself coming back to it and playing a few levels here and there.

The hub on which all of the little levels are built off of is quite unique, and is also where the story progresses.

About the only thing I don't like is the same I've experienced with all of the Arcen games I've tried and that's that there's always a lot of filler rather than a few lovely levels there are tons and tons of samey levels. I'm sure the lovely levels are in here, but it's why I've gotten tired of it before the end.

A Paladin's Steam Review: Shattered Haven. Conflicted Feelings of Survival.
  • Genre: 2D Top Down Survival, RPG and Puzzle Solving.
  • Developed and Published by: Arcen Games.
  • Platform: Windows, Mac and Linux.
  • Business Model: Base Game
  • Copy supplied via press key from Arcen Games
The Shattered Haven experience overall has a feeling of confliction. Like like the dev(s) were uncertain of what they wanted to make until the last figurative minute. There are underpinnings of a really great game here but its execution feels schizophrenic at times. I have to wonder if there were multiple developers involved that weren't on the same page. The overall mechanics aren't bad on their own but when combined together, leaves a rushed or incomplete feeling. It doesn't mesh together as well as it should. The difficulty can spike between easy and insane in an instant which creates an aggravating experience.

Overall Gameplay
The graphics are ok for a 2D game, the music is pretty good but can be jarring at times when it switches style all of the sudden. Some tracks were apparently not done by Pablo, their regular soundtrack composer. Said tracks sound generic and completely out of place. Additionally, the control scheme isn't the best either. It doesn't feel intuitive though I find it difficult to describe why that is. I think if I had to point the blame at anything, it would be the weird inventory management system and wonky combat. Here's the problem with the combat: you have to get close to the monsters in order to kill/trap them. But those same monsters hurt you and knock you back if you get too close to them. Which can result in you getting knocked into a pitfall, other enemies or any other number of obstacles on the map. Which then probably results in death. It's incredibly aggravating to deal with during the game leading to the spikes in difficulty.

PC Settings and Options
All of the PC settings you expect for a 2D game are here and then some. Arcen is always fantastic at making sure that their games run extremely well. Additionally, this game comes with all of the settings needed. Separate volume sliders, custom controls, V-Sync, resolution options (though it should be noted that the art scales weirdly so you may experience black borders at certain resolutions) and the ability to change the Game Save Directory if you wish. It also has a level editor & the ability to mod the texture pack.

Final Thoughts
It's such an odd, clearly experimental game that I'm not sure which way I should go on this recommendation. It's good...it's bad...it's good but it's bad....gahhh, I just don't know. I definitely think adding more months of polish with the ideas presented here would have gone a long way to making this game better. I'm only going to recommend it if you're looking for an experimental 2D RPGish puzzle survival game. But be aware that this game has a quirkiness to it that will cause frustration if you let it.

So, a freebie from PC Gamer Mag. Yay!
Described within as "A zombie game for those who dislike Zombie games". I'm not the greatest fan of Survival horror, as most Zombie games tend to be, so I thought I'd give ths a shot.

It's... poor, to say the least. There is potentially a phenomenal story in there but the control scheme, lack of ingame information (or perhaps lack of clarity) and pre-8bit graphics let it down badly - to the point that, after a mere 45 minutes, I find myself not caring about the plot and just quitting without saving.

It's not difficult to start with but where the items you pick up change slots when you enter a new area (and re-aquire them, in the case of portals) means that your control keys change frequently and this adds frustration to an already underwhelming experience.

The concept behind the Greys is intriging however since they can only be hurt by iron. This means the things that you would typically find to use against a typical zombie horde don't actually do anything (like the steel axe). This unfortunately has the effect of starving the player of actual weapons, increasing the likelyhood of being touched (hurt) by the greys - a factor common in (and the primary reason I dislike) other Zombie games.

Other items that you would expect to use in a sensible manner are ill-concieved at best. The aformentioned Steel Axe for example. Good for smashing windows, bookshelves, tables and 'thin' trees.and... That's it. Wooden doors are immortal - as are other trees (despite being virtually the same thickness due to the low quality graphics). This lack of versatility grates somewhat, since you only get 4 inventory slots and they fill up faster than one expects.

I am glad PC gamer gave me a chance to test this. I wouldn't have even given it a second glance before and perhaps I would have missed out on something great. This is not great - it's barely even good. There are worse games out there, for sure but I don't think I'll be coming back to this one unless it gets a major interface, control and graphical overhaul.

From the developers of AI: Fleet Command and A Valley Without Wind comes Shattered Haven. Shattered Haven is a zombie survival game where the player is presented a variety of scenarios to overcome. The story follows Mary and Darrel as they flee from their once safe haven in search for their lost children. Shattered Haven can be played as a single player game or cooperatively.

The player is put in an 'overworld' where the player must locate various portals that lead to individual challenges. The player must complete all challenges in a given region before proceeding to the next. The overworld provides a loose framework for these individual challenges and drives the overall progression of the game.

Arcen, the developers, a small five man shop have developed several games since 2009; much more than the average indie developer in my opinion. Shattered Haven, like many games by Arcen, lacks polish. I have played a number of Arcen's games and they all have Arcen's signature mark of lacking polish. Shattered Haven is plagued disjointed and often conflicting artstyle, poor sound effects, bad UI design, and minor but persistent bugs. I am beginning to wonder if Arcen actually knows how to bring a game to completion or if they simply get bored of developing it and release it to market before it's truly finished.

The premise of Shattered Haven is good, and I actually did enjoy many of the challenges it presented me and I was somewhat compelled to keep playing but the game's lack of polish caused it to miss the mark in my book. If Arcen had spent a little more time refining this game it could have been so much better.

Shattered Haven does support USB controllers although I noticed there are some bugs. Overall I won't recommend this, although if you enjoy action puzzle games you might enjoy this.

I don't recommend this title because it feels too rushed onto the market. A.I. Wars was good, Bionic Dues is kinda whacked, but this game other than the music just doesn't control very good a lot of the time. And there's nothing really that will frustrate a player than a game that doesn't move correctly, and makes you want to uninstall it. There are too many better games out there for you to invest your time into. Unless you get this for a really nominal amount of money? Don't bother with it.

I liked AVWW. I wanted to like this game. But AVWW started you off with fire punches and kept the cheesy dialogue to a minimum. SH does neither of those things.

In this game, you start by playing as some children who use Home Alone traps to fight zombies. Later on, you play as adults who do the same thing. Basically, the adults are as effective as children in this game.

The dialogue sounds like it was written by a ten year old who doesn't read much. "(Laughs darkly)" is actually part of an actual line meant to be taken seriously. The cutscenes aren't much better. "Kids are funny. It sure is dark. I'm going home" is basically what I got out of the first poorly voice-acted specimen.

The story is ridiculously rushed. Wake up, open a gate, zombies speedwalk in, silly adventure begins. At one point, a survivor simply guesses by looking at it that a portal will empty his inventory because they didn't feel like taking the time to let us find that out ourselves. Never mind the fact that he only saw the portal five seconds ago and shouldn't be accepting the fact that it exists yet.

And finally, the gameplay itself is boring when it isn't buggy. When you're not just ambling about and clicking the "next" button, you're trying to get your AI ally to get out of the canoe so you can advance.

Basically, if the worst of game-maker and rpg-maker got stitched together and stole the cute menu from AVWW, it'd be Shattered Haven.

This game caught my attention being on weeklong sale. Never heard of it before, and it looked quite interesting to me. But when I noticed it's 75 % off not even 1 month after the game was released?! That got me really interested.

The game combines different genres, mixing puzzle, rpg and survival-horror elements in 8-bit style. Now after playing it for more than 2 hours, I have to say I really love this game! The puzzles are great, I like the art-style and the music is just awesome. The story isn't that intense but definitely okay for a game like this.

A really fun game that mixes Zelda like overworld-gameplay (and I am speaking of Zelda I III here, folks!) with up to 100 levels filled to the brim with environmental puzzles accessed from there. The goal of each level is either to kill all zombies (called Grays here which are quite a different breed from your regular zombies) using the environment and what tools, traps and weapons you can forage from it or to escape from maze-like structures filled with switches, secret passages and more.

What makes this game really stand out is it's story and musical score, again composed or remastered by the intrepid Pablo Vega. All the overworld areas are bound together by the tale of Darrel and Mary and their quest to recover their four-year-old daughter Lela, whom they raised in the midst of the Gray Apocalypse, along with the boy Pierce, whom they took in after he lost his family in the wilds, while being caught up in the struggle of two eldritch horrors. The game features a branching story arc with multiple distinctive endings along with a "New Game Plus" feature to continue your quest and visit those areas you missed before (along with being able to find some treats not available before). The soundtrack might well be one of the best yet produced by Pablo Vega and does an awesome job on creating an engaging atmosphere and setting the scene for the story, which is told through a big number of comic panel based cutscenes, some of which feature brilliant voice acting by Prince Taylor (it is ridiculous how much atmosphere is created alone by his impersonation of Darrel) and loads of in-engine cutscenes.

The art of he game has been created by Heavy Cat Studios, this being their second joint venture with Arcen after Valley 2, and does a great job creating a polished but still retro look & feel for the game (think SNES with a higher resolution here). Throw in some really nice weather and particle effects to complete the package and what you get is a fitting presentation.

Finally the game can be controlled using keyboard & mouse or a gamepad controls, both of which are working flawlessly (I recommend using a gamepad, though).

Another fun game from Arcen. This is different from all their other titles (and I have no idea how they churn them out so quickly). It has a Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past feel to it, but with specific "puzzles" to work through as you advance. The puzzles typically aren't so hard that you ragequit, and are presented in a way that you can bypass some of them if you want. The story is good and unfolds at a reasonable pace, and it's very atmospheric. This is another entry on my very short list of games that I prefer to play with a gamepad.

To understand this game, first imagine a 9.5-rated action puzzler on Armor Games. (Alternatively, it could be on Newgrounds, but this is more an Armor Games sort of game.) Now imagine it expanded into a full-length game, with more levels, more weapons, more enemies, and the same base mechanics and production values. You're not getting anything here that you couldn't get in a basic form for free on the Internet, but you're getting it thoroughly explored in far more combinations and permutations than you'd ever otherwise see. ("How about a level where you start with no weapons, but have a camouflage blanket to hide under?" "How about a level where you have eighteen water traps, unlimited time to set them before releasing the zombies, and sixteen zombies that normally take two water traps to kill?") If your interest is at all piqued by a hundred levels of luring zombies to their many possible dooms, lurch--don't shamble--to buy this game!

The control scheme, lack of clarity ingame information let it down badly. The game's story does not stretch the limits of imagination as well.
This might be a game that takes a while to hit its stride, but what I played in 20minutes really didn't inspire me to keep going... :(

Badly written, characters not worth caring about, awful control setup, just bad in every way.

This is the best game I've played in a long time. I really can't recommend this highly enough. The story is engaging, the music is incredible, the gameplay is nostalgic and innovative. It's almost like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and the Adventures of Lolo had a lovechild. Plus, they include the same editor that they used to create the levels. Really, what are you waiting for?

An interesting Zombie Survaval game that plays almost like a puzzle game. Very fun.

It's like a really hard Goof Troop with silly voice acting. Which I guess is still like Goof Troop.

Take a few minutes to set it up with JoyToKey and you're good to go.

The other reviews I have read for this game are right on the money.

A promising, yet slightly disjointed game.
Remeniscent of the old school NES dungeon crawlers and with some (I stress "some") well thought out puzzles, I could overlook the weak storyline and get stuck in.
However the repetative nature, and buggy AI made it infuriating to play at times.

I'm going to stick with it, and hope it improves as it goes along, but as it stands right now, I wouldn't recommend you buy this game outside of a steam sale, or a indie bundle
