As some of you may know, last Friday was Mecha’s last day with ISOTX. Having her as a part of our team was a pleasure for all of us, and we wish her the best in future endeavors! Before she left, though, she was kind enough to help us pick out the winners of the Fan Art Contest – a difficult undertaking to be sure, as we received many wonderful entries. You guys are ridiculously talented!

We’re proud to announce that the winner of the first place spot in the Fan Art contest and the March of War t-Shirt is none other than Yoska. First place in the Poster half of the challenge, and the winner of a printed copy of his poster goes to Color-Copycat!

Congratulations to both of our winners. Make sure you keep an eye on your real-life mail for your prizes to arrive, commanders! Talking Tactics: taking that position, sir!

Your position on the battlefield can mean the difference between victory and utter defeat. If you can gain the higher ground, or outrun your enemy, the balance of battle can be tipped in your favor. Today we’ll talk about how you can use the movement, position and size of your units to your advantage.



The most basic attributes of units relating to their mobility are their speed and size. Greater speed makes a unit more effective in almost every area, be it moving to attack enemies, scouting unknown terrain, or withdrawing from enemies it can’t effectively fight. However, smaller units (such as infantry, Jeeps or Technicals) can often access areas larger units can’t, so even with a lower speed, in tight maps with smaller routes through the terrain they can prove more manoeuvrable than larger units with greater speed. However, they will also be less effective at blocking the movement of enemy units.

There are some units in the game with the ability to ignore terrain entirely. Most of these are the flying units, which naturally aren’t blocked by terrain, and can see across terrain. On the other hand, while they can be targeted by any anti-air attack regardless of terrain, they cannot be seen across terrain, so you can still conceal flying units from ground units by staying on the other side of blocking terrain. If you attack and reveal your position though, any unit with sufficient range will be able to immediately return fire.

The other units which can ignore terrain are the Republic Jump Troops and the Warlords Drill Tank. These units ‘jump’ across intervening terrain, but are otherwise still bound by normal Line of Sight rules.

Once you understand how a unit can move, the question is where to move it. Ending your turn behind cover where possible will make it harder for the enemy to spot you and make it easier to get the first hit on them, but will also limit your own vision (unless you used your first move to perform recon and then ended behind cover with your second move). Artillery should of course remain hidden behind blocking terrain where possible, but you will need other units to spot targets for them unless you have a good feel for where the enemy is likely to be.

Hills provide an advantage to whoever holds the high ground. Units on top of a hill can shoot down on units below them, but those units cannot return fire. In order to attack units on higher ground, you must move your unit fully onto a slope – at this point it will be able to target the enemies on higher ground. The point in between the two images here (where the Technical would be half on the slope and half off) would not allow it to shoot upwards. This means you could protect units on higher ground by blocking access to slopes. Units on slopes can be targeted by units below or above them, so your blocking unit on the slope would still be vulnerable.

The same system applies to Line of Sight – units cannot clear Fog of War on higher ground until they are fully on a slope. FoW on slopes can be cleared both from above and below.

March of War is indeed a game worth your time if you are into turn-based action games. It's a well paced game, with a interesting approach on WWII theme. Quallity wise I shall bow down and say that I can't professionaly asses it, but from a consumer stand-point:

-Well designed maps, that span various type of regions of wold, such as: tropical forest that hide within forgotten temples, dry deserts that were once home of african tribes, as only theyr houses remain as proof, cities destroyed by war, military bases, and many more.

-Resemblence to Company of Heroes's resource points, that must be captured: The game has 3 resource types: Infantry, Mechanical and Command wich are neede in various numbers and combination to bring in troops, tanks, and use Command Cards.

-Various game modes.

-Interesting approach on the faction's unit: A flying Goliath of a plane called the Flying Fortress for the UR( the 1947's USA), The African Warlods focus more on salvaged vehicles and go as far as strapping a canon on a elephant, The Shogunate bring mighty infratry units as The Immortal or the evasive Shadow Warriors, The Junta will rip your infrantry appart by use of massive tanks, drug-infused Hulks, Snipers, chemicals and dangerous wild-life, The Union comes in numbers and with the mighty power of propaganda and bullet-storms with a side of molotovs, The Alliance will always roll out only the best tanks, with huge rocket platforms, The Churchill tank and it's Croc variation and Stormtrooper infantry.

- One-time use Command cards: Call in a Zero Strike( Japan's Zero Planes), a fear inducing rocket, sneaky insurgents, an air strafe and many more with the power of Commands Cards.

-The game presents itself with 6 factions: The United Republic, The Latina Junta, The European Alliance, The Soviet Union, The Shogunate Empire and The African Warlords, each fighting for peace or world domination.

-Full community driven political experience: All 6 factions has a faction leader and a group formed from the top 10 players, in the current faction, called the High Command. Faction leaders are voted by the memebers of the faction and they will solve any political disputes or even peace/war to your nation. The High Command will vote and assign for it's faction the current war zone. So in this game it is important to be aware of what your faction whats to do, and how the other faction-leaders see your faction.

Now as in any game, every great addition comes with it's pair of bad, so as Cons:

-Maps can be repetitive, annoying to play on or somewhat imbalanced for play of any type as it may bring a strategic advantage for the other combatant. There is no option of map selection pre-game, they are randomly chosen from the pool. You can end up picking a war Siberia's tundra but the map may place you in the african desert, but that's just a thing regardin immersion and logical map picking.

-Variation of units brings variation of builds and may lead to over powered combinations. There is a constant feel in the first phew playthroughs that the other faction is op or has un infair advantage over you, but as soon as you get the feel of the game it becomes clear that tactics and good deployment in the early game wins the battle.

-A player with enough in game currency or paid-currency(we will get there shortly) that has enough Command Points can bring a lot of hurt on his enemy. This is not much of a con as the counter-benefit for doing so it losing a lot of money for just one won round, so it becomes more of a: Is it worth all that money to win just this game?

-Faction may be over or under populated. They all have great approches and pro's and con's but striking a balance between the faction's player population wich may lead to a faction getting stomped and forced to fight for it's life although there is no such thing as faction wipe(the will always be rebels for a cause, as the australian soviet rebelion)

-Being a strong community game, High Command members may leave the game for too long and lead to rogue votes, Faction Leaders may go rogue, and wage war to the detriment of it's faction, but they can be changed after two weeks. We are in the end talkin about playin with other people and chosing them to lead us to war.

-This is not a con but is worthy of mentioning. The game has 2 currencies:
-A in game currency that you get by playing battles
-A paid currency, wich is self-explanatory
Now the in game currency will buy you anything related to army composition, daily army bundles while the paid one has these capabilities to wich we add: cosmetics for your portrait, and some paid currency only army bundles. It's not Pay To Win but it's still very close to it.

As a matter of devs, they seem to keep an eye on how the factions play, if the maps are ok, and if the units are not over-powered. There are MECHs(admins) for every faction and there is a constant MECH in the world chat ready to help any player.


So to wrap it all up: March of War is a good turn based WWI strategy game, with a nice approach on the theme with it's factions although some factions may feel weak due to low number of players, it has a great map design but you can't chose wich one to play on and some may be poorly made in terms of balance but they will be resolved, a lot of units to choose from, a rich and fun political component that may even be the sole reason to play the game, but we are talking about letting others rule us and they might not be the best suited in the end. I highly advise giving it a try, see it for yourself and in the end you got nothing to lose. It's a free game!

Having seen this game develop over almost a year I'd say this for it. Its great, constantly being refined and updated and it offers a wide range of units and gameplay styles to keep you entertained. If you like TBT games this is for you, it echoes of the great table top games. If you don't like TBT, well why not give it a shot its free and you can get all of the units in-game for in game currency, no IRL money needed. Either way, its a great way to kill a few lazy afternoons.

definately a good game, I see a lot of people complaining about the game being p2w (funnily enough these players usually have an hour or less played meaning they know pretty much nothing about the game) but i've never found it to be p2w at all, if you want to it is possibly to buy the units with real money, but you can also get them all for in game cash without that much of a grind, again I see a lot of people complain about a terrible grind and taking forever to get units, again these people have maybe an horu played meaning they havn't unlocked the higher difficultys, as you lvl up you get higher difficulty settings that allow you to grind out the gold for untis pretty quickly.
buying all the units also doesn't help much as a player with maybe half the reserach tree unlocked that is good can still beat him fairly easily.
The game has some glitches and issues here and there but overall it runs well enough, i've had a lot of fun playing it, the developers are active within the community, easy to talk to, and actually listen to their playerbase. the factions are pretty well balanced and the world map is a cool concept.
some of the issues I have with it are some pvp problems, some exploits exist for players to use and a player can go AFK for 10 minutes before auto-losing which can be annoying, and taking provinces on the world map doesn't feel very rewarding especially at a high lvl because it doesn't do much other than change the color, other than these relativly minor complaints i've definately enjoyed it however.
the game isn't for everyone but if you enjoy turn based stratagy games you should definatly at least give it a look.

Early Access Review
Great turn based strategy game. technology tree makes you want to keep playing and unlock fun new units. Single player is great for short term playing as it can easily be paused and resumed anywhere.

Amazing game. I was never into the whole turn-based combat, but this game pulled it off pretty well. I also like the whole regional attack thing. This game is great, I'd highly recommend it.
