"Successfully reloading a gun for the first time through sheer muscle memory is easily one of the greatest feelings in gaming."
8.5/10 – Destructoid

"Receiver is interesting for two things. One, it focuses on a single weapon, the Colt 1911 A1, and takes it very seriously, using "high detail gun mechanics", which means you can "manipulate each part of the gun independently" (the beginning of the video shows this in action). The second is that it's a randomly-generated shooter that features permanent death. Taking place inside a single building, every time you die, you have to start at the very beginning again, but the entire game world is re-rolled. It's available now for $5, which given the ideas on show, is totally worth it just to check it out."
Kotaku

"Receiver didn’t cast me as some nigh-invincible mass of regenerating muscle. The end result, then, was that I felt exactly how I’d expect Real Me would in a combat situation involving live ammo."

I really really really like this game. it's got a really cool gameplay concept (the gun handling) every function has a different button (slide, hammer, eject magazine, insert magazine, slide lock, safety, etc) and it is pretty unforgiving in its difficulty. first, every run is different. the map is randomly generated and you spawn with 1/3 possible guns, each of which have their own inherent strengths and weaknesses. second, movement is key! you can be running along and make a simple mistake like not checking a corner (or more than likely not looking up) and you're dead. the more you play the better you get though. it's not a pretty game, the graphics are pretty bare bones, but that isnt meant to be the focus of the game. neither is the story, but it's still an interesting weird sci-fi that I kind of enjoy.

some people have complained about it "not being optimized well" but the only time I've ever experienced any kind of stuttering is occasionally when I move into a new room. the easiest way to handle this is to just not charge into a room and instead ease your way in. this is a tactical game! you shouldnt be sprinting at all unless you're 100% positive that you cleared that area. I say that because there have been plenty of times when I used to just run into a room and (lag or not) I wound up right in front of a turret with no cover to save me because of my own fault. or that I ran into an open area and got tazed by a flying drone before I even knew where they came from.

yes, this game was made for a game jam in a very short amount of time, it's far from AAA. but it is still an awesomely fun game for me. it's so simple but it has this strange kind of depth to it that I really cant explain. I highly recommend it.

Its a shame that this game doesent recieve any updates anymore or that there are other games using this system. great game but it only shows the idea of how to make an interesting gun simulation.

Definatly love the gun mechanics, they should add this sort of complexity to some more games but map layout and overall gameplay / objectives are very disappointing definatly could use some more content.

It's bad. It has an okay concept and interacting with the guns is interesting but the gameplay, graphics, story, and literally every element of the game besides reloading the guns is boring, has VERY little effort put into it, and effectively destroys any enjoyment or otherwise interesting elements that you may try to find in this abandoned, rotting corpse.

TL:DR
Short, fun, interesting, but not perfect. A little unfairly difficult at times.

Detailed review
Receiver is a rather interesting game for a few reasons. The main attraction here is how guns handle. Compared to pretty much every other FPS, the gun mechanics are not simple. To reload, you have to press certian buttons for each function such as mag ejection, loading mags, cocking hammers, ect. At first it feels rather clunky but with practice you will be able to reload your weapon much more quickly.

In terms of enemies there is really only two. A taser drone and a turret. Both have weak spots and the ability to only have certain functions such as flying or the gun being disabled. Now this is where the flaws of the game start to show. On occasions when you walk into a room, you can be shot immediatly. Making the game rather difficult at times. Death will almost always be unexpected. There will also be moments where you will run out of ammo due to missing an enemies weakspot several times.

The story is kinda interesting and unexpectedly deep for this kind of game. Its experianced best going in blind.

The main gripe for this game for all the negative reviews is 1) the lack of content and 2) difficulty.

1) It costs £4 and goes on sale frequently, not to mention it's free with Overgrowth, a brilliant early access title by the same devs. Not to mention it was made for a 7-Day FPS challenge, and acts as a proof-of-concept rather than a fully finished title brimming with content.

2) The point of the game is to be difficult. You can't just press R to do a reload animation. You have to conserve ammo and fire accurately, while learning to reload the gun manually. That's the beauty of this game.

The point of this review is, it's an amazing game for its price, and considering it was made for a challenge the length of a WEEK.

I was trying to learn how to reload, when a flying bot came out of nowhere and killed me.
I was picking up some bullets, when a flying bot came out of nowhere and killed me.
I was listening to a tape, when a flying bot came out of nowhere and killed me.
I was trying to shoot down a flying bot, when another flying bot came out of nowhere, and killed me again.

Let me put it this way:
To preform a dry reload in Call of Duty: Just empty the mag
To preform a dry reload in Reciever with a M1911:
1.press t
2.Press e
3.press `
4.Press z 8 or 7 times
5.press 1/2/3/4 whereever your gun is
6.Press z
7.Press r
DONE
This game has taught me more about gun mehanics then all the Cods I've played put together.
Sure, it's hard as balls, but it's still an excelent game. You play it, lose, but you WANT to play it again.
I RECOMEND THIS GAME TO RELAXED GAMERS
