Reviews

"Successfully reloading a gun for the first time through sheer muscle memory is easily one of the greatest feelings in gaming."
8.5/10 – Destructoid

"Receiver is interesting for two things. One, it focuses on a single weapon, the Colt 1911 A1, and takes it very seriously, using "high detail gun mechanics", which means you can "manipulate each part of the gun independently" (the beginning of the video shows this in action). The second is that it's a randomly-generated shooter that features permanent death. Taking place inside a single building, every time you die, you have to start at the very beginning again, but the entire game world is re-rolled. It's available now for $5, which given the ideas on show, is totally worth it just to check it out."
Kotaku

"Receiver didn’t cast me as some nigh-invincible mass of regenerating muscle. The end result, then, was that I felt exactly how I’d expect Real Me would in a combat situation involving live ammo."
Rock Paper Shotgun

Steam Greenlight

this game feels like it's the product of some weird cult's beliefs. at the time of writing i still haven't beaten it, but i can do all the gun things from memory so that's nice. somehow this game is my aesthetic and it's also pretty fun even though i know nothing about guns

the game has this thing it does where if you walk a certain distance it'll halt a sec to load the new chunk of area, which is sort of annoying and it's gotten me killed once or twice, but otherwise it plays pretty solid

Believing this to be a game where you play as a receiver on the field I got right into it, after about 5 minutes of playing I realized there would be absolutely no football throughout the game. I feel deeply betrayed by such a misleading title.

Receiver: A game wich takes the meaning of "badass gunplay" and puts it in your hands. Althought Receiver may seem like a boring perma death run-of-the-mill game its alot more than that. Its gun physics, gunplay, and brutallity make it a game worthy of my top 5.

spawn in some apartment or something that's 500 feet above the ground, have gun with lots of bullets as well as bullets laying on the ground near me, cool beans bro. proceed to walk around outside, hear noises around corner, oh boy turrets, proceed to take an entire minute just to load my pistol, aim at turret and shoot, got that little ♥♥♥♥♥. find bunches of cassette tapes with some illuminati secret-♥♥♥ mind-warping hypnosis matrix ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t, find almost all of them, im so good at this. hear strange buzzing noise as i enter next area, hear beep noise across roof, oh damn son, what's that. turn around to see a flying robotic incarnation of satan himself wobbling at me at 100mph with a tazer, my finger is tapping the W key faster than the speed of light, turn around again to shoot robot but it's too late, every ounce of feces inside my ♥♥♥♥♥♥ has spilled onto my chair.

10/10 would get scared to death by a wobbly tazer robot again

To be honest, at the first look this game doesn`t attract you at all, you may even think that it`s easy, but when you get into it, when you play at least 30 minutes, you will see how difficult this game is. I like challenges. I recommend this.

This is a game you most likely haven't heard much about, it's pretty ♥♥♥♥in' funky. It runs on Unity, so it has some buggy stuff going on. The difficulty is crazy difficult, I don't think I'll ever beet this game. but this game is super satisfying and scary and intense and you should definitely get this game if it ever goes on sale. I give it a: pretty good!

This game is very crafty and all of the spawns, from rooms to what you spawn with, are randomized. The game very quickly teaches you to be cautious, ranging from punishing you for running into a room without looking into it first, to immediately being rammed in the side with a drone with no way to counter against it.

How enemies spawn is randomized, and sometimes a bunch of turrets will be spawned in such a way that you'll need to tactfully take out each one before you can move on, and sometimes it'll cluster 5 turrets in one room.

To keep you on your toes, how quickly you can react to turrets seeing you varies, ranging from being able to be seen by a turret for a full second and not die, to being shot the instant you enter their field of vision.

Additionally, it seems how durable the robots are is also randomized. For example, sometime's you'll take out 4 enemies with one shot each, and sometimes you'll have to dump 10 bullets into a turret's weakpoint before it stops moving.

What you spawn with is randomized, which means sometimes you can spawn with a revolver and 30 bullets, and sometimes you'll spawn with a M1911A1 and 4 bullets.

Where you spawn is also randomized. Sometimes you'll spawn in a room full of ammo and maybe a tape and/or flashlight, and sometimes you'll spawn in direct view of a turret.

Don't get me wrong, this is a great game, it's just that if you're purchasing this, prepare for RNGesus to kick you in the butt. A lot.

Every once in a while, I come back to Receiver. And I fall in love all over again.
It's a very short game, with a simple enough story. It's very clear that thought and energy was put into the function of the guns and drones. Other than that, things are very simple. But that's a good thing. This game is ABOUT the guns and drones: nothing else needs more detail.

I've played it so many times that I know every room, every weak point, every ccontrol by heart.
And I've never beaten it because, while fair enough, it's ♥♥♥♥ING IMPOSSIBLE.

An immensely (sometimes unfairly) tough game, but the intimate interaction with your weaopn, as well as scavenging for items and tapes makes this a game I keep going back to.

I bought this almost 2 years ago, and I only finally beat it for the first time. Yeah, I'm bad at these games, but it's not about purely making it to the end. The journey is almost always a fun one, and that's what makes this a good game.

Reloading is very satisfying and fun, but there are many things that could be improved; mostly the enemies and the limited content it offers.

You will rarely get more than 5 hours of entertainment from this game, so I'd only recommend getting it for a dollar or 2.

Fun game.

Gets real boring when you realize it's the same old same old thing over and over and over again, though, and once you get all tapes, that's it, you're gonna be pretty done. Enemies are the same two over and over again. Flying sentry robots, and turrets.

Operating the handguns in Receiver is the only part of the game what will keep you engaged. If you don't have a weird hardon for guns then you're not gonna be into this game.

One thing I find weird - I've been shot a bunch by a turret before, then had time to duck into cover, only dying a couple seconds later. Just peculiar.

I still recommend it, because, hey, a weeks work resulted in this? Eh, fair enough. It is what it is.

How would you do if you had to control your weapon the same way as you do in real life? Would you be able to reload in time to shoot what is coming at you? Would you even be able to remember how to put the magazine back in without scattering precious unspent bullets all over the floor?

Excellent for shooter mechanics. Unparalleled, actually. Because of this game, I want all shooters to have a mod that brings this game's gun mechanics in.

Not much else to keep you playing though. Oh, there's a mod that adds some more guns. Needs multiplayer. And, you know, more stuff to do then the same ~ten "rooms" and two enemies.

Alright kiddies, lets talk about Receiver. This is a gun porn game. You get bullets, you get a gun. That's it. One hit, and you die. You've got two enemies, stationary turrets and flying tazers. You're dropped in this tower complex and have to find eleven cassettes to unleash your mind powers and finish the game.

The plot doesn't matter. This is a gun porn roguelite with gunporn and swat gameplay. Its simple and low overhead, but high concept. You're going to check corners, sprint erratically (none of that 360 no scope ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t), and will start praying that the next set of rooms you encounter will have more bullets or clips. You can die from fall damage, you will risk falling to make a running leap for those bullets. You will crouch around corners to kill those turrets with three shots to their base. You will dip around corners to try and take out their sensors to save those precious rounds for later. Those bullets are all that stand between you and oblivion at the hands of the enemy. Your psychic powers will make them glow like manna from heaven. You will take every spare second to load every spare bullet into a clip. After every engagement, you will check your gun and your ammo and make sure you don't spend the last free moments of your miserable existence frantically trying to load bullets in a clip while a hovedrone closes in for the kill on your enormous head.

You are also going to fail, a lot. But many of you like that, and it can be very satisfying to clear half a level only to fail in a hail of gun fire or miss that ledge for those precious shiny bullets.

This game was developed for the 7 day FPS challenge and is the most streamlined experience for the FPS genre I have ever played. I have never beaten it, and I will never care. It is the thrill of dropping a hover drone from beyond its range, the joy in disabling a turret in a single shot, the chill of creeping into a new area and seeing the blue grid shine out from its sensors.

This is a gameplay experienced refined to its purity. I would enjoy an open world survival game based on these gunporn mechanics, if it played as smooth as this.

A test of not only your multitasking with a small weapon, but how well you can do in it, Receiver has you fight turrets and flying stun weapons. While very slim with detail shows though it with very complex control with your gunwith you having to use keys to check if your firearm is chambered, load rounds into magazines and pulling used rounds from a magnum. Now with the rather strange be it unattractive graphics, nonexistent short amount of story can still pull some one who looks to find a fleshed out small arms short game find this to your interest .

With this shows a better understanding of what you are using and has you cound your shots
