"Successfully reloading a gun for the first time through sheer muscle memory is easily one of the greatest feelings in gaming."
8.5/10 – Destructoid

"Receiver is interesting for two things. One, it focuses on a single weapon, the Colt 1911 A1, and takes it very seriously, using "high detail gun mechanics", which means you can "manipulate each part of the gun independently" (the beginning of the video shows this in action). The second is that it's a randomly-generated shooter that features permanent death. Taking place inside a single building, every time you die, you have to start at the very beginning again, but the entire game world is re-rolled. It's available now for $5, which given the ideas on show, is totally worth it just to check it out."
Kotaku

"Receiver didn’t cast me as some nigh-invincible mass of regenerating muscle. The end result, then, was that I felt exactly how I’d expect Real Me would in a combat situation involving live ammo."

This is the game I want more of, more than anything else I've played.

The more I've played this game, the more delightful I find it. I find myself wishing its mechanics would be adopted by other games. At first, the process of even chambering the round at the top of the magazine was beyond me. After a few minutes, I could walk myself through the steps of refilling a magazine. I've never played another FPS which lets the player handle individual bullets.

After a few hours, I was comfortable with the controls to the point where, instead of dreading the sounds of flying electrocuting drones, I sought them out, feeling like I was truly investigating this bizarrely atmospheric sight- and soundscape. Every playthrough brings its own flavor of tension. Sometimes, you start with the confidence of two full magazines as you hustle to meet your doom. Sometimes, you start with one bullet in the chamber and three empty magazines, and the best you can do is shake your head and hope for the best. Either way, death will find you. Sometimes, you use your last shot on the seventh flying drone and fall to the eighth. Sometimes, you're methodically firing at a turret until it notices you and mows you down in half a second.

This game is easily worth five bucks, if you feel you could commit to getting the hang of the unfamiliar control process. There isn't much variety (two types of enemies, three firearms, several procedural rooms), although it presents enough of a challenge. I still haven't collected all of the cassette tapes on a single run-through. This is why Receiver's tactile depth of interaction is something I wish more ambitious games would adopt.

A neat little fps that does guns differently. Surprisingly addictive despite its simplicity. It's a game every person who plays shooters should play at least once.

A different and interesting take on what video games have been doing for decades; not much in the way of content but a cool idea that it would be fantastic for some future games. Then entire time I played this I felt it would lend itself perfectly to a detective noir type game, something like LA Noire, using the shooting only once in a while to build tension and realism to the police procedural style; probably wont ever happen but hey, maybe this one random review will convince somebody to do this, and if that happened I would say Reciever is a great game for inspiring somebody!

Very fun, but seriously those flying drones need to be nerfed. I've shot them over 6 times before with the 1911, and they've still killed me. It's a very small fault with a very fun game.

Also, performance is a very serious issue. It runs very poorly, resulting in many cheap deaths. There is a mod that reduces this a little, and adds more guns as well, so I would recommend it after you've played for a while.

As of writing this review, I have only beaten the game once. So, it is very difficult, but so much fun; I love the realism. You will jump out of your skin sometimes just by a little beep, but it is worth it. I find myself coming back to this game repeatedly.

It randomly appeared in my library, so I decided to play it.
Reciever is a very realistic game in my opinion. I like it alot for its good gunplay.
Guns & Bullets
not only do you die fast if you get shot, bullets travel realistically so it takes time for it to hit, but not very much, If you are hit, sometimes death is delayed, also there is no ammo counter so good luck. Using guns is fun but complex, to even reload you actually have to do stuff, and you don't just press a button, if using a handgun : you pull the magazine out, then put another one in, pull the slide back then load, if you want to check your chamber, hold t and r. if you need to load a mag with bullets, you holster your gun, pull out a mag then put bullets in, as I said very realistic. If using a revolver : you need to hold v to empty the cylinder, if bullets still stay, try it again. Then press z and add a bullet 1 after one. then press R again and the cylinder will pop back in. (I will continue to write the more I play)

This game is incredibly difficult. And that's why I like it. It's complex and fun. You die fast and you have to get really good aim. This is basicly the ultimate shooter trainer with mechanics that no ohter shooter will ever use. It's just 5 euro's and that's why it's good for some fun.

If you don't like games that are difficult, don't buy it.
Don't like having to git gud to play for fun?? Don't buy it.
Are you hardcore and want to put some time in a hard and complex shooter roguelike?? Buy it now or just wait for sale

Omg where do i begin. i Love this game. I suck at this game. the gimick of mechanical deatail to how to operate your gun is extremely sastifying although confusing and difficult to get use to but the smart help system really eases that difficultly curve. Shotting enemies in different places all have different effects and learning these on your own can be excited although it is explained in one of the 11 tapes you need to find.

Lacking areas would be the voice over for the tape dialog and the lack of really interesting text but looking for the tape is whats fun and you probably arent looking at this game for a gripping story. also the aim sensitivty just never seems perfect for me i can't get the pinpoint accuracy i want even with all the dpi settings on my mouse.

overall i say that this game is worth the $5 and will last quite a few hours

Let me put it this way:
To preform a dry reload in Call of Duty: Just empty the mag
To preform a dry reload in Reciever with a M1911:
1.press t
2.Press e
3.press `
4.Press z 8 or 7 times
5.press 1/2/3/4 whereever your gun is
6.Press z
7.Press r
DONE
This game has taught me more about gun mehanics then all the Cods I've played put together.
Sure, it's hard as balls, but it's still an excelent game. You play it, lose, but you WANT to play it again.
I RECOMEND THIS GAME TO RELAXED GAMERS
