"Successfully reloading a gun for the first time through sheer muscle memory is easily one of the greatest feelings in gaming."
8.5/10 – Destructoid

"Receiver is interesting for two things. One, it focuses on a single weapon, the Colt 1911 A1, and takes it very seriously, using "high detail gun mechanics", which means you can "manipulate each part of the gun independently" (the beginning of the video shows this in action). The second is that it's a randomly-generated shooter that features permanent death. Taking place inside a single building, every time you die, you have to start at the very beginning again, but the entire game world is re-rolled. It's available now for $5, which given the ideas on show, is totally worth it just to check it out."
Kotaku

"Receiver didn’t cast me as some nigh-invincible mass of regenerating muscle. The end result, then, was that I felt exactly how I’d expect Real Me would in a combat situation involving live ammo."

Steam Greenlight

This game, man. This game.

So, it's an Indie ♥♥♥♥ing-great game.
Let's get it over for a few seconds...

The particularity is about, except the gameplay, the fact that the controls are hard, but you'll get over them after some deaths.
Dying in this game doesn't mean, as most people think, dying. It means that you must improve yourself, here. Dying because you get shooted by a turret or because you get stunned by a drone doesn't mean that's your fault, it just means that this game is hard and you must play for some time to get over these deaths. You can use walls as an advantage, I mean, all these particularities help the game, alot.

One of the best indie games out there, buy it if you like challenging games and even if you don't mind some weird controls configuration.

"The Mindkill is inevitable..."

Welcome to Receiver, a shooter that will tear your muscle memory apart, and rebuild it in a new, more responsible way. And that is a very good way to describe this Indie Masterpiece...

What is this game? Why does it have a single word title like shows on Fox? Why is it going to break my muscle memory? Is this game hard? Will I be able to-

STOP!

Lets go over what this game is first. Receiver is a First Person Shooter with the most realistic portrayal of firearms in gaming. Guns are not toys, and they are certainly not as easy to handle as portrayed in many other Military Shooters out there. Each key on your keyboard performs a single action in relation to your handgun, being pulling the slide back, flipping the safety on or off, ejecting shells, or removing the magazine.

Sound hard? Trust me, it is. This shooter, no matter how easy it may look, will break you. You will die, often, and in horrible ways: For your firearm begins in a random state.

You may start with a fully loaded, cocked, and ready M1911, but forget to turn the safety, and guess what? The robot turrets in the next room wont wait until you to fiddle with your gun until its finally ready. Oh, and there are no Humans in this game, you are fighting robots, why do I mention this? They have no fear, ever.

Sentries, Flying Tazers with a death wish, and randomly generated levels will make your life a living hell, and a short one at that.

So why do I love this game, and why did I choose to review it? Video games are beginning to make a translation into the darkness of firearm portrayal. Guns are not toys, they are not easy to manipulate pieces of metal that can be fired without consequence. In comical games, where the weapons can be seen as fake, this is not a problem. But in the MMS (Modern Military Shooter), some weapons are just too easy. Just because an M4A1 doesn't drop an opponent with one shot in Call of Duty 4, does not mean it wont in reality.

Enough rant, lets see how this sizes up. Yay.

Crit Rating: 7.9 (Hard as balls, Randomly generated, Indie, Realism)

-Don't be afraid to die, dying is not a consequence, it is a way to understand how Receiver works.

The game takes a realistic approach to weapons handling, and while initially the controls seem overwhelming and overcomplicated at first, you'll quickly fall into the groove.
What follows is a genuinely challenging game, one that rewards preperation, caution and planning. One single slip up will cost you your life and you'll have to start from the beginning.

It's a true testament to thinking outside the box in game design, and much like Mount & Blade dared to attempt realistic melee combat using very rudimentary systems and controls, that game attempts to do the same with firearms.

Interesting and very tense, would recommend if you're up for a challenge

The game that depicts guns at their most accurate. At the beginning you'll do everything games and films has taught you, assuming that everytime you insert a mag, you have to pull the slide back (Which is a good way to eject your bullets from a magazine without firing them). With practise you'll be handling guns like a pro, reloading swiftly and with ease whilst feeling awesome.

It's cheap, It's fun, it's very immersive. Get it. Only issue I could bring up is poor optimisation, whether they plan to release updates to combat this, remains to be seen.
