About This Game

A RETRO CLASSIC REBORN

In 1993 the world witnessed the birth of a new type of super hero. Now, twenty years later, Superfrog is back!

But wait! Before you get all gooey-eyed, Superfrog HD isn’t just some quick and easy port of the 16-bit version but with fancy graphics! It’s a complete re-imagining with tweaked gameplay, reworked levels and, of course, enhanced high definition cartoon style artwork. A nod to the 16-bit platformers of old, Superfrog HD is a retro classic reborn.

In the greatest traditions of fairy tales our story sees a handsome prince turned into a slimy frog by an evil and jealous witch… who, in turn, kidnaps the prince's bride to be and heads for the hills. Our little green friend happens upon a mystery potion (wow, how lucky was that?). Chugging on the vial, the frog prince is bestowed with amazing powers. Determined to defeat the witch our hero sets out on an adventure that, with your help, will lead him to his true love.

You must explore and traverse 24 finely crafted levels and additional boss levels across 6 differently-themed worlds. The goal of each level is to collect a set number of coins, and then reach the exit. The ultimate aim, as ever, is to save the day, beat the witch and get the girl.

  • 24 new levels based on the original designs
  • 6 differently themed worlds

I'm writing this in tears, hugging my boxed Amiga copy of Superfrog, this remake feels and is worse than the original in most if not all its key components.

I get it we're no more in the chiptune era but Superfrog's original mods sound way better.
I get it that the original levels could be too hard for modern standards but ugh, just ugh.
The camera moving around makes platforming hard and imprecise, it hurts too. I was forcing myself into playing this game just to unlock the original levels but I can't because the dancing camera makes me sick (first time ever in my whole gaming career). Who thought that was a good idea?

Overall, sadly, this game screams cheap from every pixel, I mean, even the intro! It was animated (and on a different floppy <3) on Amiga, how comes it's just static pictures with overimposed text now?

Please Team17, I owe you my childhood, I get it that you're in trouble if not dead already but just stop butchering my memories with uninspired games and remakes. :'(

Oh the camera, I felt like barfing from the minute I started. I had to play through a little bit just to see how its design is. To put in a few words, the further you go, the worse it gets. Poor camera, motion blurred movement (very hard to see up coming obstacles), no direction in each level, unfair enemies (why can I only jump on the blue things O.O?) and the list just keeps going.

The only time I would recommend this game is to see how not to do a platformer.

I am going to go barf now...motion sickness is the worst

The camera jerks around, enemies often are invisible against the background - not to mention when you're moving at at speed - platforming is imprecise and unfair (pits often are out of the screen area before you plunge into them) and all around this game is VERY outdated.

Something that took name from a legendary Superfrog should really not be such a piece of garbage.

Back in the day Superfrog was a decent, good platformer for the Amiga. Now comes an HD remake from the same company, Team17. Unfortunately, it does not only fail to hold up to contemporary indie competitors, but also to reproduce the spirit of the original.

There's few good things to be said about this game: contrary to other reviewers, I found the controls to be good enough. The design of Superfrog, the princess and the witch reminds one of Eric Schwartz's cartoons. You can also unlock all original levels, albeit with the new design.

But that's about all that's to be said in favor of the game. Now on to opening the can of worms.

The level design is okay, but there's far too few graphical assets, everything in each single world looks more or less the same, it's bland and forgettable. Also, the game is quite easy throughout, until difficulty ramps up noticable in the very last level, to the point of being unfair.
What's even worse is that every single boss fight is the same: you always fight the witch, always in the same manner, and only the surroundings are slightly changed each time. Provided you have at least three to four lives left, you can simply stand in one spot and repeatedly press a single button, since dying won't reset your progress.

Graphics are cheap and animations clunky, by modern standards and even compared to the original game. The design of the enemies doesn't fit with that for the other characters.

The music, while not being that bad, is very repetitive.

Compared to modern classics of the genre like Super Meat Boy, Guacamelee and others, the game loses in all respects.
If you want to get your dose of nostalgia combined with great gameplay and extraordinary presentation, go pick up the great Giana Sisters reimagining instead.

Rating: 3/10
Just a tad above being awful. It's not really terrible, just absolutely forgettable.

they clearly tried to make a really generic platformer back in 1993 and gosh darn they did it. Tons of worthless coins and other "points" items everywhere. You'll find yourself getting lost in the level since everything looks exactly the same. Extremely twitchy and floaty at the same time. the Left and Right controls just stop working at times too. I don't even know why the character is a frog he doesn't do any frog things but jump. There are just no redeeming qualities here

screw it i dont need to type anymore. This game is Bubsy HD.

It's... well, it's kinda crappy.

I was originally gonna write a really negative review for this, because the first time I played it, I got some major motion sickness. But since that was about a year ago, I figured I'd give the game another quick shot. While it didn't make me physically ill this time around, I still cannot say too much positive about it. What can I say about it?

WEEEEEEEEEEEELL...

Gameplay-wise, it's sorta like a Sonic game, but they did it all wrong. Where Sonic's running movements are based on gaining momentum, you only go one speed here, and that speed is, like, really really fast. Paired with a crappy camera that sorta shifts right and left depending on which direction you move, this can make you kinda sick, much like it did for me when I first played it.

Music-wise I don't have much to say. The stuff's kinda generic, to be honest. Like something you'd hear in an Android game. I guess it's produced pretty well, but it's just... REALLY bland.

The graphics are also a little bland. Much like the music, they remind me of something you'd find on Android. Again, the production quality is decent, but they went for like a really uber-polished look which is just... yeah... generic.

I suppose it's not the worst thing ever, but it's just REALLY bland by today's standards, or really by any standards. I went ahead and took a look at some video footage of the original game, and to be quite honest it has much more charm than this. That's not to say I think that version is any better as a game, but it at least LOOKS better. Point is, if you are REALLY craving games about frogs in capes running around sickeningly fast, go get the original game instead. At least it has some charm to it.

So yeah, not recommended.

This is basically a mobile phone game now. Any nostalgia and charm the original had is lost because the camera bounces in and out too much. This is clearly because it's designed for a small phone screen.

The Music is just AWFUL, The sound effects are utter rubbish and generic. The original sound or an option for it would be much better. You can get the original music by replaying any of the 'classic' levels which you have to unlock. Any charming animations like superfrog spawning in from the original game is gone. There are Gems you pick up now? Not sure why though because it adds nothing to the fruit you normally pick up. The slot machine mechanism is so unbelivably poor now. They simplified it far too much to suit mobile. The hitboxes are wrong for everything. You can get hurt by something you're not touching. On mobile you might not notice but on PC you do. Using the spud is all wrong mechanically. Platformer wise it's sketcky occasionally whereas the original wasn't

Did Team 17 make the original superfrog? Yes.
Did Team 17 make this remake? I'm not even sure. It looks like they outsourced the developent to a third party app developer and didn't care at all.

TL;dr - Don't buy it, it's a terrible phone port and you're better off with an Amiga Emulator and the original.

Severe motion sickness, the camera cannot stop jerking around every time you switch direction, which when platforming happens ALOT.
Insane amount of pointless collectables
No movement other than left/right & jump

Superfrog HD is a good remake of the original, it has revamped graphics and music combined with steam achievements and trading cards, the only negative points about it are the boss battles that are very basic and the game brings few new things to the table, also a recommendation: you should not give up on the first levels, I was about to do that but after passing to chapter 2 I started to love the game.

A faithful enough redux of original game. Quiet interesting actually, at first - it starts out simplier, but difficulty increases gradually and difficulty curve is much more smoother than in original, which is always welcome, because closer to later levels it goes toe to toe with original.
From the downsides - cutscenes are stillshots instead of animations, music is (in my opinion) a tiny bit worse than in original (original one were sorta brighter and memorable, this one a bit watered down by lighter instruments, but that also might be an upside, especially for little kids).
I recommend it just for the fact that it is a breath of fresh air from Team17, especially after all of worms games. (Srsly guys, they turning worms into madden, stop that).
Now if only alien breed remakes were at least notch as faithful and good as this remake....

Decent platformer, although with some issues. Seems to be a good game for someone looking to speed run, although I feel as though the audience this game is directed towards is probably in the realm of 5 - 12. The presented story line is probably as cliche as it gets and it doesn't really bring any new mechanics to the table when it comes to platformers.

CONS:
- Idiotic boss fight.
- Unresponsive jump button.
- Unskippable intro for each world.
- Cannot get boost by jumping on enemies.
- Nauseous camera movements (there is a fix by the community.)
- Badly designed enemies and obstacles (obnoxiously ill positioned spikes are annoying.)
- Golden lily pads at glance are often indistinguishable from the coins, and there is no indication hud whether you collected it while playing a level.

PROS:
- Retro classic reborn.
- Clean visuals and animation.
- Original stages for those who want nostalgia.
- Collecting collectibles and coins in large numbers can give you some satisfaction.

Final Remarks:
I like Worms, not this amphibious mongrel.

. REPUDIATED .

My 5 y.o. daughter loves this, almost as much as I did many years ago. She plays with an XBOX 360 controller and it works fine.

After a while she could even handle the original levels. I was impressed.

One thing that I'm not so impressed is the golden thingy (I don't remeber the english word for it), that is one per each level. It looks like a golden bum and that is how she calls it. Now she makes drawings of a golden butt on the wall. Thanks Team17...

I gotta be honest this is some of the most generic platforming I've ever played yet for some reason I cant stop. I guess the original had more style but either way the level designs are bland and generic. I mean at least Mario tries to reinvent the worlds around him with every game making it fresh but this is just boring as hell. Good news is this usually pops up for the humble bundle so get this for a buck at most if its on there
