It’s a complete re-imagining with tweaked gameplay, reworked levels and, of course, enhanced high definition cartoon style artwork. A nod to the 16-bit platformers of old, Superfrog HD is a retro classic reborn.

In the greatest traditions of fairy tales our story sees a handsome prince turned into a slimy frog by an evil and jealous witch… who, in turn, kidnaps the prince's bride to be and heads for the hills. Our little green friend happens upon a mystery potion (wow, how lucky was that?). Chugging on the vial, the frog prince is bestowed with amazing powers. Determined to defeat the witch our hero sets out on an adventure that, with your help, will lead him to his true love.

You must explore and traverse 24 finely crafted levels and additional boss levels across 6 differently-themed worlds. The goal of each level is to collect a set number of coins, and then reach the exit. The ultimate aim, as ever, is to save the day, beat the witch and get the girl.

Get it if you can pay 1-2 dollars or less, maybe in a bundle.
The original IS better,. and also a lot harder.

The remake is done by the original company (possibly by different devs however), but they didn't really do a "great" job at it. Sure it's still super frog, but it's also a lot more casual than before.
You unlock the levels, and can start from them at any time.

The system specs are nice and low (because this game used to run on A500),. and it's a nice tribute.
If you want the proper original experience, use WinUAE though.

Well this game is not perfect but not that bad either, it's at least a decent game, however I'd suggest you to buy it when it's on sale only ( 1 or 2 $ should be ok)

It makes me die a little inside given how much I loved the original. The controls generally feel less tight but particularly throwing your Spud in a diagonal direction is an absolute nightmare, the game seems to randomly pick between firing where you want, firing somewhere else or accelerating you straight into the nearest spikes/enemy/cloud of despair.

Trying new stuff? Fine, good, whatever. Having to trawl through levels that don't flow quite as well to get to the originals? Stupid but I can live with it. Even a lazy port of the original to grab cash would leave me with Superfrog on steam and happy enough with that. But releasing a game that doesn't even feel like it's gone through playtesting really is the worst.

Head to GOG and have at the original, you'll be much the happier for it.

I played Superfrog on the Amiga back in the day and it was a great game. So I was looking forward to playing this version. However, as much as I'd like to play it, I can't. It's just way too fast moving that it's impossible to focus on where you are jumping to, yet alone trying to avoid things.
Maybe it's my setup, but it's superfastfrog!!! I can't see any option to slow it down a little so for me I have to give it a miss.

To the developer... Please slow it down so you can react and see what you are doing. It's impossible to play currently which is a real shame.

Superfrog HD is a nice and fun platforming game, nothing too difficult. It is a remake of sorts of the original Superfrog, released in 1993, with a more "modern" art style and redesigned levels. It does include the original levels as a bonus, though, and I must admit I found them quite challenging.

The story is pretty standard stuff; something that you'd find in a children's book: the hero, Superfrog, used to be a human prince who was going to marry a princess, until an evil witch turned him into a frog and kidnapped the princess. After finding a magical potion that grants him powers, the prince decides to go after the witch and rescue the princess.

Now, let's talk gameplay. The game is divided among six different zones, each of which is divided in four levels (plus four original levels, but these aren't required to progress). In order to complete a level, one must first collect a certain number of the coins scattered around the level, and then find the exit, all within a certain time limit; each level has several hidden areas, that, while not necessary to complete it, can provide with bonus points, or rare collectibles. There's also a few power-ups, granting you flight (well, not really, it's more like gliding) and a ranged attack in the form of a small ball. After completing all four levels in a zone, you then have a boss fight against the witch before progressing to the next zone.

The soundtrack is very good, too. It's nothing spectacular, but it's what you'd expect from a colourful platformer like this; nice, catchy tunes that play during the levels.

However, I'd like to add that I found a few cons in the game. While I did enjoy it, and didn't have much trouble with it, there were times when the movement felt kind of sloppy, and I'd miss a landing or hit an enemy by mere milimeters. It's nothing too serious, but it can be somewhat frustrating, as you can lose a life by slipping into some spikes, and whenever you lose a life, you also lose the powerups you've collected. Also, a few levels felt a bit labyrinthical a times, and I'd end up running out of time without knowing where to go.

Anyway, I'd say it was an enjoyable game, all this considered, so I recommend it.

before i start I got maybe an hour of gameplay before giving up on this game and must of that was replaying the first world over so i coud move to world two because the menu wouldnt let me select anything but world 1. i left on to get cards and thats the end of this

simplest platformer ive ever played. no story par you are turned into a frog and need to save the princess. after exiting the game i couldnt restart or pick up from world two but coud only start from the last level of world 1 which was annoying. i think i paided $0.99 on this and i suggested not paying anything ever for it as its controls, music, gameplay, story, and anything else you could name isnt very good and you could get much more for your money anywhere else.

I started playing and when I hit "move" he suddenly went fast. Actually has 2 speeds. Moderately quick, and stopped.
To me, this looks like a crappy flash game. I wonder where I got it? (Probably Humble Bundle?)

I have no nostalgia for the original Superfrog but I am aware of the multitude of unfortunate ineptitudes in its various ports outside of the Amiga original, and now with the opportunity to swoop in with a comprehensive remaster Team17 have delivered unto us a fully fledged remake with all the grace and innovation of a free Flash game from the mid-2000's. If that.

I mean it doesn't even have the original music for corn's sake.

Hmm - the Superfrog reboot is not quite like the original Amiga version from 1993. And it is worse for it in nearly every respect.

Somehow the graphics have been robbed of a good deal of their original charm and the intro/extro sequences are not a patch on the fantastic original versions. The new music isn't great, but the revamped versions of the original levels retain music closer to the original. The music in World 6 (factory failure) has some weird and offputting sound effects which really detract from it.

The one area which is better is the level design. The designers have sharpened up this aspect of the game, and it is challenging in places, and rarely too much so. They could have swapped out the slot machine and put in a couple of more engaging / fun minigames - the slot machine sin't ideal for kids (the main market really) and is plain boring. Special levels on platform games like this are usually fun and frenetic (e.g. Sonic 2, Zool 2).

Some people might complain about the controls being sensitive but on my XBox 360 pad the old-fashioned D-pad works just fine. However the analogue sticks are a nightmare to be avoided.

If you want to get an early 90s platformer then I'd recommend either going to Jamie Bell's website and getting the QWAK remake for a few quid (a great example of how a remake should be done!) or pick up either Sonic 2 (THE classic 2D platformer) or Sonic CD (a superior but relatively unknown game).

Its a decent effort, but Superfrog deserved better than this - Overall 7/10

Sadly, even nostalgia glasses won't help with this remake. It falls short in all aspects, and even when you unlock the old levels (yes, you have to unlock originals), amiga version still beats it senseless.

One of the best platform games of the time with amazing sound and great colourful graphics.
The only thing wrong with this HD version the the lock system of the non-HD levels: they should be unlocked and optional.

I liked the original. But I don't like this.

This is a remake, not a retouched version. The game engine is very different to the original, and whilst it retains the quirks of the old game, it's also added a lot of new ones.

Such as the camera which zooms in and out and flies around constantly making people dizzy and also making it hard to see what you're about to run into (This can be fixed by editing a game file, but why is it not an option ingame?). Or the arbitrary treatment of enemies - some knock health points off, some kill you instantly but you have no way of knowing which is which until you find out the hard way. It's also very annoying to get knocked back by something making you lose control for a few seconds, then get knocked by something else, then get pushed into spikes which immediately make you lose a life.

The levels are big with loads of secrets, but rather than this being a fun exploration as in "Turrican", you just find yourself wandering round looking for something to do. There's no real variety in the enemies and most of them just sort of sit there waiting for you to kill them. There is no way of knowing in-game whether you've found 80% of the coins or not, you only find out at the end of the level, by which time it's too late to go back and get more.

The collision detection feels a bit off, and it can be hard to judge when jumping on an enemy whether you're directly on top of it or not. Also, the character has absolutely no inertia, and stops the nanosecond you let go of the button...this feels very strange and reminds me of "Fatman: The Caped Crusader", another example of how NOT to do a platformer.

Maybe Team 17 should have taken Amiga Power's advice back at the time - rather than thrown their toys out of the pram and deciding they weren't going to listen, they should have taken some constructive criticism on board. Team 17 used to be great. "Alien Breed", "Superfrog", "Worms", "Project X"...things went a bit wrong with "Arcade Pool", "ATR" (which DID suck, guys) and "Army Men"....now all they seem to be able to produce are endless "Worms" variants and a stream of poorly done remakes like this :(

Completamente estúpido, é um dos piores jogos de plataforma que já joguei no steam, eu não sei o que deu na cabeça da Team 17 (criadora do Worms Armageddon) em refazer um jogo desse, SuperFrog ''HD'' (porque de HD não tem nada) tenta ser um remake do Super Frog de 1993 do Amiga32 (um videogame jurássico) mas acaba sendo só mais um joguinho de aventura medíocre, a câmera é horrível e causa tontura simplesmente porque é ''viva'', você pula e ela pula atrás, não é quando você anda e a camera só avança pra frente quando você vai, e sim toda hora, jogue mais de 1 hora e prepare-se pra vomitar, as batalhas com os chefes dos cenários são completamente ridículas, o primeiro Superfrog já tinha uma temática infantil, esse tenta ser menos bobo mas não passa longe pela simplicidade exagerada, só faltou as nuvens de algodão doce e um mar de chocolate.
Se você é curioso a respeito do SuperFrog, procure a versão original e 1993 e fique bem longe dessa aberração aqui, nem por curiosidade compre esse jogo, procure pelos outros tantos títulos de plataforma que o Steam possui.

Superfrog HD é um remake do jogo original para Amiga, sendo extremamente fiel ao seu predecessor e sem apresentar nenhuma novidade relevante, a não ser os gráficos melhorados. A historinha é conceitual e diz respeito a um príncipe que foi transformado em sapo por uma bruxa malvada.

O jogo possui uma jogabilidade meia boca, pela falta de uma característica crucial em jogos de plataforma: a precisão dos controles! Desta forma, o jogador passa por vários embaraços desnecessários na tentativa de superar obstáculos do cenário.

Algo bizarro é que estão espalhadas pelas fases vários itens que podem ser coletados, mas eles não possuem função alguma no jogo, salvo para aumentar a pontuação do jogador ao final de cada estágio. Nem precisa mencionar que ter uma pontuação maior ou menor também não dá ao jogador recompensa alguma...

No geral, Superfrog é um jogo que até pode oferecer certo entretenimento, mas suas mazelas o deixam muito longe dos jogos de plataforma atuais. FRACO (5/10).

História:
Superfrog HD é uma releitura do clássico Superfrog. Aqui o jogo coloca você na pele de um príncipe que foi magicamente transformado em um sapo por uma bruxa malvada e rabugenta. O príncipe, agora sapo, precisa lutar contra monstros sorridentes durante sua aventura que passa desde uma simples floresta na América do Norte até as pirâmides do Egito, para resgatar sua princesa e ser feliz para sempre.Tudo isso coletando bilhares de itens desnecessários que não fazem o menor sentido só para ganhar pontos no fim de cada fase.
No meio da aventura o sapinho preferido dos games encontra seu amiguinho bola verde, que ajuda em sua jornada.
Uma máquina do tempo também faz uma pontinha no jogo, tudo é bem contado e faz muito sentido.

Gráficos:
O jogo é muito diversificado, com cenários totalmente originais (guardem essa palavra,será bastante usada), coloridos e que nem sempre faz sentido para olhos desatentos, mas basta prestar atenção no jogo que verá que faz todo sentido florestas, castelos, circos, pirâmides e outros cenários interligados em uma só aventura. O gráfico é um dos pontos altos aqui, com um estilo 2d totalmente excelente que parece que foi desenhado por um artista plástico renomado. Cada árvore das florestas passa uma sensação de vida. Cada tijolo do castelo,desenhado perfeitamente, com suas rachaduras e poeiras, passa uma sensação de abandono.A fase do picadeiro é um destaque a parte, colorido e feliz, com canhões atirando para tudo que é lado, muito impressionante. Nada no jogo parece estar a toa, tudo foi muito pensado para fazer o jogador entrar no jogo.

Jogabilidade:
Superfrog HD presenteia o jogador com habilidades totalmente originais, nunca vista em nenhum outro game plataforma, como seu ataque de bolinha verde feliz e sua capa, que faz o sapo planar,facilitando o seu salto. Afinal, todo mundo sabe que a parte mais importante de um salto, é o pouso.
Superfrog não é só um sapo, ele é o sapo mais rápido do mundo, tão rápido que a câmera do jogo mal pode acompanhar direito, você tem que ter isso em mente. Ele pode correr para ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ e bagunçar a câmera toda, abaixar, jogar a bolinha verde feliz para atacar e pular. Se você tem a capa, segura o botão de pulo no ar para planar. É só isso, simples. Porem funciona.
A cada estágio que o jogador completa, o jogo entra em um modo cassino,uma espécie de mini-game, mais especificamente, caça-níquel.
Aqui cabe destreza e perícia do jogador, para apertar a alavanca quando os slots da máquina estiverem posicionado iguais. nem todo mundo é capaz de vencer o cassino da bruxa, mas vencendo ou não, não faz diferença, o cassino só está aqui para saciar o vício do pessoal da terceira idade e mandar uma mensagem subliminar. Portanto não fique chateado se não conseguir vencer o mini-game.
Outra coisa legal é coletar os itens das fases para ganhar mais pontos, são tantos itens para coletar, que deixará até o mais hardcore colecionador compulsivo de lixo satisfeito.

Som:
Outro ponto que vale ressaltar é a musica original do jogo e os sons cuidadosamente pensado, tudo aqui produz um som diferente que se encaixa perfeitamente na atmosfera do jogo. Destaque para a música que toca nas lutas contra os chefes de cada mapa, é tão empolgante que se você tiver um bom sistema de som, você vai se sentir dentro do jogo.

Veredito:
Superfrog é um ótimo jogo, com jogabilidade boa, ótimos gráficos e sons, com um altíssimo valor replay e além de tudo isso ainda presenteia o jogador com STEAMCARDS. É fácil demais para um adulto e difícil demais para uma criança, pesquisando na net o seu público alvo, descobri que o jogo é destinado a Muppets.
Isso não significa que você não pode dar uma olhada caso goste de coisas peculiares.
O final da história é uma revelação avassaladora, um verdadeiro tapa na cara da sociedade que vai deixar você semanas pensando sobre tal na cama antes de pegar no sono, vale por si só a compra.

Queria gostar mais desse jogo, pela nostalgia...

O desafio que ele proporciona é zero...
O gráfico é ridículo, me lembra decoração de festa infantil...
Os controles não são precisos, mas nesse caso nem faz diferença...

I'm writing this in tears, hugging my boxed Amiga copy of Superfrog, this remake feels and is worse than the original in most if not all its key components.

I get it we're no more in the chiptune era but Superfrog's original mods sound way better.
I get it that the original levels could be too hard for modern standards but ugh, just ugh.
The camera moving around makes platforming hard and imprecise, it hurts too. I was forcing myself into playing this game just to unlock the original levels but I can't because the dancing camera makes me sick (first time ever in my whole gaming career). Who thought that was a good idea?

Overall, sadly, this game screams cheap from every pixel, I mean, even the intro! It was animated (and on a different floppy <3) on Amiga, how comes it's just static pictures with overimposed text now?

Please Team17, I owe you my childhood, I get it that you're in trouble if not dead already but just stop butchering my memories with uninspired games and remakes. :'(

Oh the camera, I felt like barfing from the minute I started. I had to play through a little bit just to see how its design is. To put in a few words, the further you go, the worse it gets. Poor camera, motion blurred movement (very hard to see up coming obstacles), no direction in each level, unfair enemies (why can I only jump on the blue things O.O?) and the list just keeps going.

The only time I would recommend this game is to see how not to do a platformer.

Nostaliga is a funny thing; those fond memories captured in time from your long lost past. Superfrog back on the Amiga was one of those games for me, simple and fast platformer that was intuitive to play yet challenging to master that I recall spending many hours replaying to better my high scores.

Regrettably, this remake is a shallow shadow of its former glorious self. Sure all the key ingredients return from the original such as the cartoony cutesy monsters to squash, secret passages, fast paced movement, fruit and coins aplenty yet this HD remake lacks any real enjoyment. Your character controls feels slippery (excuse the pun!) which often results in running off edges, misjumps and other such frustrating things. Many of the coin chain pickups cannot be timed at all to get all of them in one go, essentially stopping your momentum through the level and having to re-jump the same part over and over again if you want to get all the coins. Monsters seem to be placed in parts of the level just to frustrate you more rather than adding to the challenge, again slowing down the action. This is contrary to how the original played which felt faster and more fluid like Sonic or other such platformers achieve.

The movement in HD when going full speed did give me a nauseated feeling too (something I have felt in FPS but never a platformer!) and the entire game is like it is in a zoomed in mode unless you hit a springboard when it zooms out to more the size of the original. This means you see less on the screen and makes it far harder to time jumps or see ahead. Sound effects and music thoughout were incredibly average and uninspired - seemed like it could have been pulled from any generic platformer. To top this all off as well, the game would only recognise my Xbox 360 controller in the menus and not in the game meaning I had to play with the keyboard (yet another let down).

Playing this version has tarnished my fond memories of the original. If you are going to rehash a classic game from the past much more effort needs to go in to ensure it captures the same 'feeling' the original game did (or simply do a decent port of the original to modern specs such as the classic Another World). Without this, you just come out of it feeling that this was a money grabbing attempt by Team17 preying on ol' school gamers childhood nostalgia. If this is what we can expect from remakes from Team17 I sincerly hope they never do a Project X HD!

This game is a throwback to an ancient Sonic clone on the Amiga. Because this remake attempts to remain faithful to that, various mechanics will feel a lot like Sonic 1 on the Master System, and this is why.

The default camera behaviour is terrible. This is an unusual point to mention at the start of a review, but it's the point that stands out the most as some players report it making them nauseous. Fortunately it can be fixed, although this requires tweaking a configuration file.

While you're there you might also want to disable level introductions as they waste a lot of time and offer nothing.

So now you're in the game. You'll soon find that, like Sonic 1, acceleration and deceleration are almost instant. I personally prefer this as turning doesn't take an age (you hearing this New Super Mario Bros?), but it makes some of the areas that demand precise control a bit tricky.

Early on, you may find enemies hard to see. This is really only a problem in the first chapter as the blue ones blend with the background and look like a powerup. It's not a problem after this as you get used to it and later enemies stand out more.

For the most part enemies are a mere nuisance. You get 5 hits before dying and potions that restore those completely are very common - sometimes occurring more frequently than every 5 threats! Spikes are the stark exception, as they kill you instantly and some are placed in a way that makes avoiding them awkward.

The overall difficulty is... strange, to say the least. The original required getting 80% of the coins in a level before the exit was available; that has been removed, although there is still an achievement for the feat. You get star ratings each level, and to get the maximum 3 stars you can't die. Considering some levels can take 8-10 minutes, this makes those spikes needlessly punishing.

Then again, star ratings don't actually do anything. They aren't required for progress and don't even contribute to any achievements. So unless you want to thoroughly beat the game maybe those spikes aren't that punishing after all.

Secret areas were a large part of the original's charm, and these were remembered. Levels generally have around 10 hidden in walls, which gives a nice focus to exploration. One bizarre occurrence is that when a secret area is revealed, your vertical inertia is killed. This feels untested as it means when you reveal a secret during an ascent, you'll fall before being able to enter it.

The downside to secrets is that sometimes collectables are placed behind walls over spikes. When this happens the wall is never a secret, but unless you're aware of that fact in advance you may feel like testing every time, and dying every time.

The worlds are colourful and varied although somewhat stereotypical. Some environments like the circus and the pyramid are as boring as they always are, but others like the green hills are pleasant and enjoyable. I must note that this game has one of the few ice worlds that I've actually liked in any platform game ever.

The game has a main mode with 24 levels, a further 24 levels from the original Amiga release which you'll unlock as the game progresses, and a challenge mode called Frog Trials. The main mode is the important one, the others mostly feel like extras. Obscurely every achievement is linked to the main mode too, so hunters can completely ignore the remaining content which seems like a strange choice.

Overall the game is a fun throwback for 5-10 hours. I wouldn't recommend buying it for anything less than a 75% discount on Steam, but it does appear in bundles from time to time and if you happen to have it in your library I'd definitely recommend giving it a chance.

If Sonic and Rayman decided to throw caution to the wind in a night of unbridled passion, the resulting abomination would probably be something like Superfrog. A clumsy lazy lad, he'd cheat his way through life feeling content to emulate his parent with poor success, all the while denying his obvious refusal to branch out on his own. The awkward kid of the class always vying for attention, it wouldn't be until his later years that he realized that- oh wait, this is still a game after all.

An updated version of the mildly popular 1993 Amiga game of the same name, Superfrog HD is perhaps the most generic and dull platformer I have ever played, easily ranking with the likes of most movie tie-ins and poorly developed flash games. It does everything you would expect a platformer to do, but with such unimaginable mediocrity that I am simply astounded it is actually a retail game and not something a free browser distraction.

Controls are a case of extremes, with the titular amphibian moving far too fast on foot only to change to an excessively floaty feather-like feel once he gets off the ground. With the exception of a punch and glide pickup (which are pointlessly taken away after each new level/death), items are needlessly prolific despite doing nothing but add to your meaningless hi-score, sending you down the numerous dead ends barely disguised as "secret areas". The levels themselves are tediously designed, only matched by the boss fights which are literally the exact same broken stage each and every time.

I will admit to never having played the original, but if it's anything like this I have no desire to. Despite it's self proclamation as a timeless classic, I can't help but feel this was a needless remastering that would have been better left unremembered. As far as the HD update goes the artwork is so simply drawn to begin with that it isn't even worth mentioning, and for those looking to replay the original game be forewarned you have to unlock those levels by means of a terrible slot-machine mini-game, which requires you of course to play the new levels to get tokens.

Whether you have fond memories of the original or not, I would recommend skipping Superfrog HD. It's a poorly made game and an insult to whatever fans there were of the franchise. I am glad that Team17 tried to branch out from their typical Worms games, but if this is going to be the result, I'd prefer they stick to what they know.

I would possibly go for no for this game. Because I was kinda expecting more additional features and maybe include the original version for young gamers to show what the Original 1993 Amiga version of Superfrog really looked like; maybe add some archives or video footage of it, for this HD Remake game to make it a bit more exicting.

The problem I am finding with this game is the spud shooter aiming diagonally.

So personally if some gaming industries want to make a remake as well in HD then I think they should include the original version, but most importantly wipe those long-term discovered bugs that came in the original near the 16-bit era. Save states would be useful if the original SF game came too.

Back in the day Superfrog was a decent, good platformer for the Amiga. Now comes an HD remake from the same company, Team17. Unfortunately, it does not only fail to hold up to contemporary indie competitors, but also to reproduce the spirit of the original.

There's few good things to be said about this game: contrary to other reviewers, I found the controls to be good enough. The design of Superfrog, the princess and the witch reminds one of Eric Schwartz's cartoons. You can also unlock all original levels, albeit with the new design.

But that's about all that's to be said in favor of the game. Now on to opening the can of worms.

The level design is okay, but there's far too few graphical assets, everything in each single world looks more or less the same, it's bland and forgettable. Also, the game is quite easy throughout, until difficulty ramps up noticable in the very last level, to the point of being unfair.
What's even worse is that every single boss fight is the same: you always fight the witch, always in the same manner, and only the surroundings are slightly changed each time. Provided you have at least three to four lives left, you can simply stand in one spot and repeatedly press a single button, since dying won't reset your progress.

Graphics are cheap and animations clunky, by modern standards and even compared to the original game. The design of the enemies doesn't fit with that for the other characters.

The music, while not being that bad, is very repetitive.

Compared to modern classics of the genre like Super Meat Boy, Guacamelee and others, the game loses in all respects.
If you want to get your dose of nostalgia combined with great gameplay and extraordinary presentation, go pick up the great Giana Sisters reimagining instead.


All in all, just a tad above being awful. It's not really terrible, just absolutely forgettable.

The camera jerks around, enemies often are invisible against the background - not to mention when you're moving at at speed - platforming is imprecise and unfair (pits often are out of the screen area before you plunge into them) and all around this game is VERY outdated.
