November 27

November Progress

We’ve made some real headway with the pathfinding this month, we just need to fix a few more bugs and crashes to finish up. Hopefully the new update should be ready for release by next Friday (hopefully!).

No doubt this is going to be pretty buggy since we’ve gone so many months without player bug reports. There will likely be several patches a week until it’s stable again.

What we've been up to this month:

Dialogue:
We now have an extra writer with us, volunteer Alex Z. The dialogue will be an ongoing project, so it will be added gradually over each update as Harald and Alex continue to work on it - Kenshi is later going to have a massive world map so we need a huge load of dialogue to fill it. So far we have a small bit of dialogue ready for the next update, mostly events like bandits harassing and bullying you.

Stealth:
The foundations of the sneak ability are all in the game now, although this will needs lots of balancing before it’s fully working. Sneaking is about all you’ll be able to do at this point, however Otto has started working on furniture and household items which will contain stealable items for Thievery in later updates.



Animals:
Chris has just been finishing up creature nests/ gathering points for population balance and variety. In this next update, we'll be starting you off with a few different creatures including The Beak Thing, The Leviathan, Big Wolf Things and The Crazy Bone Cow. More to come in later updates…



New buildings:
Olly has now finished creating a whole town of new building designs, but these won't be added into the game until the new world map is finished at Beta. We do, however, now have a Smelter to melt down old weapons and armour into iron, plus a Corpse Furnace to dispose of bodies. The Corpse Furnace will be especially useful in later updates for deterring hungry predators.



Weather:
Mike has finished work on the weather coding, however we now need to start on the actual animations before we can add it to the game. Weather effects are planned to be included in the update after next.

October Progress

Here's our progress this month:

Dialogue & AI Programming is at 99%, but the actual content is at 5%.
Stealth Programming is at 90%, but stealth content is at 5%.
Beast Programming is at 80%, while content, again, is at about 5%.
Weather System Programming is almost finished at 95%, but with 0% content.
Pathfinding is at 95% completion.


In a little more detail, here is a list of features we've managed to finish so far, all ready to be released with the next update once the pathfinding is stable enough:

  • Creatures are now mostly coded in. Introducing the Beak Thing, a blind carnivorous giraffe/bird creature.
  • Added stealth!
  • 64-bit version available. 32-bit version will continue, but will get occasional crashes.
  • New dialog/AI hybrid system that takes into account situation details and remembers what you've done in the past.
  • Thugs and bandits can now harass and rob you rather than always attacking on sight. Thugs in town can insult you, then go outside the gates and jump you when you leave town. NPCs can follow and chase you while they talk or threaten you, and know the difference if you are running away.
  • Changes to relation system, fighting someone in the middle of nowhere has very little effect on faction relations. Individuals can be perceived as temporary enemies or allies.
  • A new terrain engine was necessary for the 64bit build. It looks worse than the old one because we've run out of texture units, but only until we upgrade to DX11, then it should look better again.
  • NPC AI now has a schedule. They go to bed at night. Shopkeepers shoo you out of their shop at closing time and lock up for the night.
  • Buildings can now have multiple floors
  • Characters are less disadvantaged by being outnumbered, your lvl 50 warrior can now take out a group of starving bandits without getting mobbed.
  • Basically they will miss more often as he moves around and dodges.
  • More details added to the GUI, including visible calculations for character stats and penalties.
  • Multi-threaded resource loading for smooth creation of models and textures. Shorter loading hiccups when moving around the map.

Pathfinding is coming along slow but steady. At least the longer Sam takes to finish it, the more content that we can add in before it's release :)

Absolutely no Level-scaling. The world does not level up along with you, and the shops don't change their inventory to only items matching your level. At the start of the game almost everyone will be stronger than you, and survival will always be a struggle.
Realistic medical system that affects gameplay. A character with a wounded leg will limp or crawl and slow the party down, wounded arms means you must use your sword one-handed or not at all. Lose an eye and it will affect your field of vision. Blood loss means you can pass out, and the blood will attract predators. Exhaustion affects performance and is increased by equipment weight, weather, blood loss and thirst. Severed limbs will need expensive robotic replacements.
Intelligent AI that allows for characters to reason and work towards long-term goals and desires. Squads work together and carry their wounded to safety. Characters can be setup to take care of micromanagement for you.
Aid or oppose the various factions in the world while striving for the strength and wealth necessary to simply survive in the harsh desert.

Early Access Review
When it comes to early access, there are really two questions facing any potential buyer: "Is it fun yet?" and "Will it be more fun in the future?"

The latter question is always a matter of faith. In this case, having read the developer's blog and having seen meaningful updates regularly rolled out, I believe that yes, this game will only get more fun. But again, that's a matter of faith, and I've seen smarter people than me have their faith in other early access projects shattered. In life we can be certain of death and taxes, but unfortunately not of patches and content updates.

So, that leaves our first question, is it fun now? With 50 hours invested so far, I can say that I certainly think so. There's no story to speak of at the moment, but the travails of your custom character(s) as they trek through the wastes, gaining strength and equipment, are gripping for a certain kind of player. You will suffer beatings from bandits, scavenge after NPC battles like a vulture, discover profitable trade routes between towns, build a base, hire new recruits, and of course craft. Eventually you'll be strong enough to lay bandits squads low, assault cannibal camps, or event crush the Samurai and Templar who patrol the desert.

There are bugs, but they are more irritating than game-breaking. There is a lack of story content, but with enough imagination it hardly matters.

If development stopped today, I'd be disappointed (a major pathfinding overhaul is supposedly imminent, and an incredible alien bestiary is on the horizon) but I'd still feel as if I'd gotten my money's worth. I therefore feel confident recommending Kenshi as a unique and fun experience, already worth your time and money.

If you like RTS + RPG combined in a sandbox then this game is for you.

If I'd state the cons&pros -

Cons

- Can crash sometimes multiple times, then work for few hours with no problems
(this is early access so this is more like problem now than later)

- Late Game can feel like theres nothing to do, no real threat presence when squad is well equipped.
(depends how you play it)

- All the bugs and pathfinder. (sounds cliche)

- It's weird how people find this game hard,
if you play the game smart you find eventually its easier than you thought,
and can feel depressing. (the feel of threat eventually vanishes when you approach late game)

- I add some more if I figure something worth listing.

- Big map, yet so little content.

Pros

- Many ways to play it.

- Basicly you are free to do what you wish to,
no restrictions. (kill whom you like)

- This game really needs thinking, if you set the difficulty too hard
it might be really hard to get the game going (getting past early game),
which I find nice, the harder - the better.

- You can build your own base

- Playing wise pays off.

If this game had multiplayer I'd even pay a month subscription for it.

As a child, I improved rudementery reading skills with classic RPGs like Dragon Warrior 3, Shining Force, and Fire Emblem. These games were amazing, because in adition to cementing a sense of justice in a 5 year old, they presented a memorable plot, different forms of character development (DW3 with the personalities, where the personality determined stat increases, and was determined by initial stats. Shining Force with the stories told by your squadmates in the various bases found over the 8 chapters, as well as themes of amnesia. Fire Emblem for being, well, Fire Emblem.) None of that is in this game. Which makes it perfect.

"Why would you tell that story to point out what it doesn't have?"

Simple: Kenshi has everything else that made those games personally iconic. From Dragon Warrior 3, you have each squad member being completely unique from creation, with nearly endless possibilities for customization, with an open world. From Fire Emblem, you have that strategic element, same with Shining Force. But with no 'level' or 'class' system, there are no restraints. I'll admit, I plan after writing this to re-create Shining Force in game, by creating each of the characters in order of appearance. That'll be fun!

But it doesn't stop there. The combat is fluid, and the AI is great. Giving each limb, and core parts it's own hit points, and changing gameplay according to damage (and changing DAMAGE based on how you choose to heal it) is something more in-depth than most heavy LARP systems I've seen. You can build a base and be a group of peaceful farmers/traders (not that you need to eat). You can start a war with one faction (though I wouldn't reccomend it... ever), or become a group of mercenaries. The sandbox element is strong in this game.

While the game is still in alpha, the groundwork has been set for so much more than is already released (as a player, I'd be fine if I had to deal with what i've got.) The few bugs that are in the game are minute and are easily bypassed with frequent quicksaves and game imports. The dev, while a little slow in getting the game out, is very careful to minimize bugs. A perfectionist, if you will.

And this brings me back to that 5 year old playing those games for the first time, because while I can't play through those stories again, every click is another element that goes into a script playing in my head. While the characters may not interract on screen, they can be in the player's mind. As an adult, I've been a DM for a few years now, but Kenshi gives even more creative freedom to the player, which is the ultimate goal of an RPG. The only thing you can't do multiplayer, and i'm sure that by the time it gets to full release, it will have addressed that.

This game can only be catagorised as a Sandbox/RPG/RTS/Simulation/Open World/Base Building Awesomeness. This is better than most games released today, and for the price, you'd be a fool NOT to pick it up. The true brilliance of this game is that there is a start point, but it is infinite. The end is wherever you choose to stop.

I've been playing for a long while now and only recently transferred my account from desura to steam, reason for my almost non-existent gameplay time...it's all about preference. All I can say is that this game is unique in its own way and a lot of reviews had gone into details which I would rather not repeat. The developer and maker of kenshi had before worked as a security guard before to make a living while designing this game until recently he got enough money from sales to form a small team. We had waited years for long intervals between updates but he had never disappointed us before. It is his persistence to complete this game, come what may attitude, is the selling point to me. I see it having a lot of potential and modable qualities, his preseverance and persistence at work is the deciding factor. Believe me, it will take some time to get a complete game but it will arrive and you will not be disappointed. It's just quality work by a single master-craftsman with a few helping hands to produce this gem, so you can't expect work to go fast to your liking....he wants it to be the best so for me, take all the time you need, just don't take too long....I hope. ^_^

You probably shouldn't play Kenshi. It is going to suck you in. Just walk away.

JK... but not reallly.

The thing crashes semi-frequently, and there are bugs such as the path-finding and character edge-sticking which reviews have mentioned, but these don't ruin it by far and are still in development (if your character is stuck in a wall, just tell another character to pick them up). Gameplay took some getting used to, as did the interface. Kenshi has a very balanced mechanic between RPG and RTS without feeling like either. More specifically, it somehow manages to combine the feel of Mount & Blade and Dwarf Fortress, with a little influence from Bioware-style party-management, into one intelligent video-game-gasm with some serious yet subtle attitude and atmosphere.

The new content being talked about is going to expand upon what is already hours of playability. Apparently there are going to be new maps, beasts, quests, and I could even see more Mount & Blade-like politics with faction leaders (you listening, devs?), and mounts, or vehicles, and other characters, and maybe even a storyline, and then there's the modding community, and... and... let me stop.

Enter the desert.

Open-ended sandbox, (No liner story!!), simply amazing game! This is one of my must have favorite games on Steam! A true testament to PC gaming. Immersive, fun, intuitive infinitely playable - over 1000000+ hours of fun! A truly unique gem only possible on PC - the reason I love PC gaming. I do own a PS4 and a Xbox 360 too.

So at the time of writing this I only have 7/8 hours gameplay, and I can say that when I first play a game that I don't understand, I get frustrated, and find it crap unless I force myself to learn, Kenshi is the kind of game that you WANT to learn more about, it took me several new games to figure things out, find good trade routes, and eventually set up my own buildings.

This game requires the very basic of common sense to get a grips of, and it rewards you for clever thinking, can't wait till the dev's add more and hopefully make this already brilliant sandbox game into something that everyone will want to play (I hope they add multiplayer at some point, you will understand why when you ply this game)

This game shows major potential. I have been playing for a couple years now and the game as been getting better and better. I have been watching the devs site and they are soon to release a new update which will make the game ever better! i very much recommend this game. This is a bad review, im sorry.

Currently I can't recommend this game. The concept is cool,
and when it's complete I think it will be a neat game.

+Concept is cool
+Squad controls work
+Graphically ok
+Customization is Good

-No starting mobs to level off of (alpha)
-No quests, or jobs (alpha)
-Music is awful
-Lack of content (alpha)

ATM you can just build a base, and... kill people.
I wouldn't have bought this game if it didn't look
promising, but I'd recommend following it and
checking it out after updates.

I'll just start off by stating my personal truth: I LIKE THIS GAME! I REALLY DO!

But as for why I'm putting this as a Negative Post, read below.

This game is something else! I mean that in a good way. I'm sure finally reaching my post anything I say you'll have already read, but the truth is the truth no matter how many times you hear it.

My experience has shown me that this game is really not that bad, in fact I'll admit that its down right addicting (check the play time on some of the posts and alot of them are well into the triple digits ((mine's no different)) ).

But I gotta be honest the number of minor glitches (which I gotta admit are relatively small in terms of quantity in my opinion) that are biting at this game are the biggest pain of all.

I realise that the game is early release and all but I honestly think if the development team focused their COLLECTIVE attention on ironing out ONE OR TWO BUG(S) AT A TIME and improved the stability of the game rather then trying to broaden the gameplay by adding new 'creatures' or 'bigger, better walls' then Kenshi would become one of those games you'll start playing after breakfast (or during in my case) and then when you get up to go to the bathroom (because you've literally reached you're limit) you realise you've been playing for almost 18 hours straight.

I can admit that my statement above may not actually be productive, but when you've reached the point that you've spent more time trying to actually BUILD the perimeter of your outpost rather than enjoying the other characteristics of Kenshi, you find you're self thinking about not playing the game for a few weeks in the hopes that these particular kinks get taken care of when you come back.

I won't tell you not to buy the game, but I will warn you, if you buy this game you're in for a few headaches and more than a few bouts of frustration. I, like many of the other posts, will advise you to WAIT on purchasing Kenshi for the time being.

At least until there are a few less posts (both positive and negative ones) that are warning you about the bugs and stability issues. If you still decide to buy Kenshi, I can only hope the developer's have ironed out a few more kinks then there are now while i'm writing this post.
