I honestly don't understand where all the negativity comes from for this game, it's a great game, I myself got a good 6 hours out of playing to completion, and chances are I will play it again. The game is charming giving nods to Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda, Diablo, and Dragon Quest. Some people pass off the unlock "upgrades" as a massive gimmick but I feel the game handled it well, compared to for example DLC Quest which I found to be more annoying than enjoyable. The main problem is people are expecting far to much. The game is creative and highly nostalgic, the final boss was through-outly enjoyable and whilst yes the game is short for the price of £7 or the regional equivelant £1/hr seems pretty darn good to me in all honestly.

If you feel the price is too much, then fine, suit yourself, get it on deal. It was a bargain on sale.

Don't be turned off by the method used to introduce you to the game, it's called Evoland for a reason. I found the approach refreshing and the game makes not so subtle cheeky jabs and nods to other popular franchises.

This is a great little tech demo that you can breeze through pretty easily. Evoland will let you know its a game. Its a parody and will run you through some of the stages in RPG and action RPG eras. It will bluntly tell you, you're in this era of RPGs. I guess its meant for comedy, but I just didn't care for it. Sure I liked the gameplay that ranged from a very simple Zelda with overhead action, to a very simple Final Fantasy 2 with turn based RPG battles. I just didn't like it pointing things out. You'll see all the stereotypes and troupes here and the game will be quick to point them out to you so that you'll understand its a joke.

Evoland has great graphics, and gameplay elements that would make for a great game, even if the Zelda like areas have a tiny resolution that reminds you of a Gameboy. I call this a tech demo, because its very quick. I can understand paying $5 if they use this engine to make a real full fledged game, but you'll breeze through this sucker with no challenge. I would say its the perfect game for kids, but with so much hinging on nostalgia, kids might not understand.

There is no twist, such as an evil wizard devolves the land once you've easily breezed through the evolutionary eras. I knew how far I had progressed based on what evolutionary stage I was on. It just felt disappointing. You'll eventually see a Final Fantasy 8 style town, a Diablo inspired dungeon, but that can be chalked up as Zelda to the extreme. There's no depth to the game either, its meant to be easily breezed through. The focus was on making the game feel like the other games we know and love.

It is a toss up. Do you want a game you can sink your teeth into or do you want to laugh for around 3 hours? Either way, its an enjoyable three hours that doesn't overstay its welcome.

If you are fan of games like Final Fantasy (Sakaguchi era), Legend of Zelda or Dragon Quest and you would like to take few hours and reminisce about these gaming gems Evoland is the game you want to play.

Main essence of this game is unlocking various upgrades for the game itself. So instead of finding a treasure with new equipment you might find a new view perspective or resolution upgrade. Other than that Evoland is constantly switching it's gameplay mechanics between Zelda-like adventure and classic turn-based JRPG with a few minigames and puzzles here and there. Lore of the game is not so original yet interesting and fun. The story, characters and locations are all paying an ultimate homage to the Zelda and Final Fantasy (VI and VII) games and everything is presented in very genuine and entertaining way. If you haven't played any of those games I wouldn't recommend the game to you since the references are main source of amusement for players.

Gameplay is very casual and the game takes between 4-6 hours to beat and complete so don't expect to get engulfed to the long story with evolving characters. This game is no way an RPG on it's own. But if you don't have the time to go through those old Japanese masterpieces again but you want to bring up some quick nostalgia - pick up Evoland.
