Version 2.0 released

Prison Architect Version 2.0 has been released!

TWO MILLION players have now enjoyed Prison Architect. We are flabbergasted. We would like to thank every single one of you from the bottom of our hearts, for making this such a dream project.

After six years of development including over 40 monthly updates, this is the final content update for Prison Architect and the final video. We will of course continue fixing bugs and providing support. We are going to take a break for a little while, but we will be back soon with our next game.


Developer Tools and Cheats
Developer tools and cheats, seen in some of the alpha videos, are now available to everyone.
A new option is shown when creating a new map, "Enable Cheats". This is prison specific and cannot be disabled later.

When enabled:
- All construction occurs immediately
- A new 'Spawn' toolbar button permits instant creation of any game object for zero cost
- Water can be placed like any other material
- Research in the bureaucracy screen can be sped up by holding down the right mouse button on the item

F1 Edit world properties (Very easy to crash/ruin the game)

- Cheat prisons do not allow achievement unlocks
- Cheat prisons cannot be sold for profit.

Policy Window (continued)
You can now set which misbehaviours warrant an increase or decrease in prisoner security.
For example, murder can be set to immediately make a prisoner Max-Sec.

You can now disable the cell quality checks that determine which cells a prisoner can be assigned to.
When enabled, prisoners who misbehave will not be assigned to a nice cell, even if that nice cell is the only one available.
When disabled, prisoners will always be assigned to free cells if that is all that is available.

Modding System (continued)
- Added World.NumPrisoners and World.Capacity. These return tables containing the current number of prisoners
and the total number of cells in each security rating respectively.
- Added ability to use markers in object tooltip strings (via objectTable.Tooltip). See lua_function_list.txt

Update 8 released (v2.0 preview!)

Prison Architect Update 8 has been released!

This update is on a steam branch, meaning it will not automatically download. You must manually switch to that branch to see this new version.
- Right click on Prison Architect in your games list
- Click 'Properties'
- Click 'Betas'
- Select 'v2preview' from the list. (Restart steam if it doesn't show up)
- The update will then download.

This is a preview build of the v2.0 features that we are properly launching next month. There may be a couple of bugs and glitches in this bad boy so only dl if you are proper brave.....

New improved User Interface
Many user interfaces have been redesigned to be clearer, more consistent, and better looking.

- Improved Build toolbar
New look build toolbar for with much cleaner icons and graphics
Toolbar now filters out locked items by default, leading to simpler menus in early game (Click + to reveal all)
The Room toolbar now highlights room types when you mouse over them
Help tooltips have been added to many of the toolbar menus

- Tooltip sizes made more consistent and screen friendly across the board

- New Context Menu
Click on any object or entity to bring up the context menu
Allows for quick context sensitive actions
Prisoner Rap sheet now auto-follows prisoners

All construction work is now covered by a global UNDO button at the bottom right of the screen
Click UNDO to gradually reverse any decisions you have made, and receive a full refund
Nb. UNDO button is only shown when using the toolbar for foundations, materials, objects, utilities etc.

- Research/bureaucracy screen improved to look better
- Patrols interface improved for clarity
- Pipe and water rendering improved for clarity
- Informants window improved by moving the list to the right of the screen and making it smaller
- Logistics views now more consistent, showing only objects and entities relevant to each view.
Eg Food logistics now shows everything relevent to food: Ingredients, meals, chefs, prisoners working in the kitchen

- Nb. All of the new GUI features can be disabled through Main Menu -> Options -> Game -> Version 2.0 GUI tickbox

- Zoom to mouse
Nb. Can be disabled through Main Menu -> Options -> Game -> Zoom to mouse.

Modding System (continued)

- 'Infinite' mod loading
The game now supports many more simultanious graphical mods than before
It achieves this by gradually increasing the size of the graphics tileset, until your graphics card itself hits its limit
In general users should find they can now activate a great deal more mods before any problems occur
In addition, when the limit is reached you will now receive a warning/error message. (Previously it just started misbehaving)

- Mods with spritesheets larger than 1024x1024 are now supported

- Lua World Scripts
Each mod can now have a data/world.lua script file, which should contain both Init() and Update( timePassed ) functions.
This script is initialised on World initialisation (for both new maps and loaded save games) and Updated on each World update.
Variables set in the "this" or "World" tables will be cast to strings and persist in the save game.
Variables are loaded after Init and before the first call to Update.

- Mods can now have their own sounds.txt file, containing only new/modified sounds.
These will override base data in the same way as other mod files.

- Added Update button to Prison Sharing menu.
Allows any published prison to be updated with the prison that you are currently playing.

- Fixed a bug in the lua scripting system that would try to cast boolean strings (in lua) to a bool (in c++).

- TVs now broadcast over an area (3x3, shown as a green box).
Prisoners sitting within the viewing area can watch TV and thereby have their recreation needs taken care of.
Nb. Prisoners can be doing other things at the same time, eg eating in the canteen.

- New item: Large TV.
Has a larger viewing area and can easily provide Recreation to an entire room.
Be sure to provide lots of seating spaces.

- Radios now passively broadcast to the entire room.
Any prisoners in a room with a radio are slightly less bored, so get a small reduction to their Recreation needs.

- New item: Arcade Cabinet
Two inmates can play games on an arcade cabinet at the same time

- New Contraband menu option: 'Stolen From'
Shows the location each item of contraband was stolen from, rather than where it was ultimately recovered
Shows 7 days of contraband history.
This is very handy for finding which of your rooms is lacking security
Also easily reveals where contraband is being thrown into your prison.

- New Regime options
Added a 'Work/Lockup' regime type. Treats prisoners who aren't working as being on a Lockup regime instead of free time.
The standard Work regime has been renamed to 'Work/Freetime'

- Dead entities now have their cause of death displayed in their tooltip

- Prisoners without jail cells now show the reason why in their tooltip

- Family cells that are in their own block, separate from other prisoner housing, will form a single sector

- The 'Names in the Game' database can now be manually updated from the Extras | Name in Game menu.

- Updates to all translations to bring all languages up to v2.0.

- Fixed: A gang would never receive a new leader, if its previous leader was killed and left the map.
- Fix for Intake System to ensure that the correct number of prisoners are taken

Build and manage a Maximum Security Prison. As the sun casts it’s early morning rays on a beautiful patch of countryside the clock starts ticking. You’ve got to crack on and build a holding cell to detain the job­ lot of maximum security prisoners that are trundling to your future prison on their yellow bus. As your workmen lay the last brick you don’t have a moment to let them rest as they need to get started on the first proper cell block so you can make room for the next prisoner intake. Once they’ve all got a place to lay their weary heads the fun can really start.

You’ll need a canteen, infirmary and a guard room, oh, and don’t forget to plumb in a toilet, or things will get messy, but what about a workout area? Or solitary confinement cells? Or an execution chamber?

Inspired by Dungeon Keeper, Dwarf Fortress and Theme Hospital and with over 1 million players having spent time inside, Prison Architect is the world’s best lock-­em-­up.

Story Mode

Prison Architect opens with the story of Edward, a man facing the electric chair for committing a crime of passion. This is followed by four additional chapters focusing on different characters and aspects of prison life. From Mafia Dons to power-crazed senators, Prison Architect has them all! I buyed this Game when it was very young and it had a lot of promis and with all the update's they came true
but all of a sudden (that is how it felt for me) they sad that the game was done.

but the game isn't done

all the iffiest that i had in the game where most of the time patched out so did i expext then to do fro this build

but if this is the final build with it is. i can not recommend it

the game is fun but when to unfishesness apears you be dissapionted because the thinks you where expencting te be there wheren't

i love this game, but this needs more work and not to dump it like a prom-baby and work on other games, if they carried on developing it, i would recommend i

>I decided to start a new prison.
>I managed to progress farther then any of my other prisons.
>A legendary prisoner named Leonidas I arrived at my prison.

>Leonidas managed to break the doors down and kill an armed guard while the rest were resting.
>He took down 2 armed guards and 5 guards in half a minute.
>Since he was an instigator, he managed to upset the prisoners in the canteen.
>My 300 prisoners in the canteen started a massive riot.
>The 300 prisoners followed Leonidas, as they mowed down all of my guards and busted down all the doors.
>The ceo called and told me to stop the riot.
>I ordered a whole squad of riot guards into the prison.
>Leonidas and his 300 prisoners easily mowed down the riot guards.
>The ceo finally called and ordered the army to move in.
>Leonidas and his 300 prisoners were shot down in cold blood by the army.

I would recommend this game since I really like the concept and it's fascinating to see your prison run itself. It gives a bit of a Settlers vibe. However as they consider this game finished (It's not early access anymore), demand 28€ for it and announced the next update to be the last big one I cannot give it a recommendation.
It just isn't done yet, and if you play for longer, the unfinished, unrefined and outright frustrating parts - none of which will be fixed by the update - will hit you in the face like a train. I'll list a few of those:

- The temperature system is a complete afterthought and not done well at all. You can only lower temperature by having windows, and raise it with radiators. If your kitchen isn't adjacent to an outside wall, it will overheat constantly, and windows are always open, leading to your prisoners freezing in the winter. Radiators also can't be turned off in the summer. AC? Never heard of it.

- The game rewards badly managed prisons over well managed ones. Prisoner deaths are not punished directly, technically they're even rewarded because they make room for new prisoners. Even if you have failure conditions activated, the chance of feeling actual punishment is low. What is punished are "incidents", which even a well run prison can barely avoid, especially with gangs activated. I can only say that I tried both, and the prison where I stuffed 300+ prisoners into a 120m² holding cell certainly rolled in dosh.

- The calculations for dormitories have been broken forever. A dormitory with 3 inhabitants and 1 TV doesn't count as "1 TV per 4 prisoners". You have to have at least, I think, 5 prisoners in a dormitory for the calculations to hold up, which of course increases the chances of the inmates shanking each other.

- Click, click, click, click. This game requires so much ♥♥♥♥ing clicking. The scroll speed is brutally slow so you have to click and drag with the middle mouse button to get around. And the developers apparently never heard of hotkeys, because you have to click to do absolutely anything. There are thousands of management and economy games that did it better. This game will murder your carpal tunnel.

- Prisoner behaviour is disappointingly primitive. You'd think putting the power generator somewhere isolated and under guard makes sense because prisoners will try to sabotage it - they don't. You'd think they try to sneak into the storage room to steal some tools - they don't. I once tried a huge prison full of security flaws - the armory right next to the canteen with no walls in between, power generators out in the open... nothing happened. Not a single prisoner stole a weapon, or did anything else but get into minor fisticuffs with the guards.

- Room assignment is painfully broken. Basically, whenever you add a room somewhere, the game sees it as "reassign EVERYTHING to Shared" and then suddenly you have max security prisoners in your min security block, cells in unfinished wings being occupied and prisoners strolling around the outskirts of your prison. This is obviously a hyperbole but seriously, you will suffer at least half a dozen escapes from this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t.

- Deliveries will mess you up. More specifically, mail deliveries. If your prisoners can't keep up sorting the mail, it will at some point just overflow your delivery area. And what does the delivery driver do if there's no more room for his mail? Why of course, he will just stay there and block the road for everything else - like food deliveries or prisoner buses. Solution for this? Click on a mail bag, click dump. Click on a mail bag, click dump...

- The prisoner intake is convoluted and counterintuitive as hell. Something extremely simple like "Give me 1 delivery of X medium security and Y maximum security prisoners" can't be done. Instead there are "Fill to X" and "X per day" settings where the security level is determined in percentages. This has lead to me forgetting to close my prison and ending up with way too many prisoners so often I lost count.

- The way patrols work is frustratingly idiotic. When finished with its shift, a guard will simply leave its post without waiting for its replacement, leaving your prisoners unguarded.

- Maximum security doors can be destroyed. Fences can't. Your prisoners will outright give up any escape attempts if there's a fence surrounding your perimeter.

- The game barely explains anything. I once tried to dismantle an object in a common room - the button just didn't do anything. Only later I found out that this room was occupied by a gang.

- There's no borderless windowed mode.

- And last but not least, the game - or at least the campaign - implies that you have a choice between running a prison based on fear and one based on making the inmates happy. This dualism may make sense IRL but in this game, it doesn't. If you have a prisoner with a certain set of traits, it becomes outright impossible to contain him. In real life, you'd put someone with 300 murders in his portfolio into a small room with no window and a massive steel door, but in this game, someone can destroy such a door with a single punch of his bare fists, then resist several tazer and shotgun hits and take out half a dozen guards. Then get healed up and do it again and again and again. The only way to avoid this is by making this demigod of a man happy, which in turn means that your SuperMax wing becomes the SuperLuxury wing. If this isn't counterintuitive to you, I don't know what is.

So, I built my prison, and decided to try out escape mode. I had an idea of what it was about, so I had a strategy planned out. I'd use my starting character to tunnel out (staying in medium security while doing so), and using tougher prisoners to do all my dirty work, like bringing tunneling materials to my cell. They'd go up to maximum security, which I would use to get more points to recruit more people, to bring more tunnelling tools. So I'm sat there, a guy called Cliefe, with basically no punishments. However, I recruit someone with the surname "Redman". He's a skinny guy, red hair, bumped up to maximum security.
I then decided to try and use Redman to fight guards. At this point, Redman has been upgraded pretty highly. He can one-shot people, shrug off being tazed, and start riots. Redman breaks into the psychologist's office. He steals a lighter. Redman begins to burn the Common room to the ground. He kills every guard. The common room is burning to the ground, the fire has spread to other rooms. Half the prison is on fire, Redman has started a riot. Redman is unstoppable. Redman is carrying the team on his shoulders while Cliefe sits doing nothing in medium security. Redman has seen hell, and he doesn't want to stay. Redman stands while the prison burns to the ground - he's burning to death. But if he dies, he dies a maytr, a figurehead of a greater cause that is escaping prison. He sprints. The walls have burnt down. Redman is an unstoppable wild beast. The snipers have their sights trained on him, but Redman is too fast - he escapes. The prison that I worked hard on, spent hours on, poured huge amounts of effort into running has been totally destroyed, alongside nearly all the guards, prisoners, and staff that worked there.

Such a Great Game. its just So fantasticly Fun.
I was doing my best to run the perfect Min-Sec prison i was going about my day and some new prisoners showed up. and i noticed that two were still in the holding cell and it looked as if they had a texture error cause they were not the same color as the other prisoners so i looked at them and then it hit me.
They Were Super Max{/i} i panicked i had forgotted to CLOSE IT. Oh god. i could not keep the with the other prisoners! so just in the middle of the yeard i put a small room with super max only with a yard one toilet and and a couple beds. i was happy with my work so i continued one with my work...
i ♥♥♥♥ you not 5 seconds later it said that there had been 2 deaths.
super max prisoners "Barry Manalow" and "Jonny 'two times' Morello" are going on a killing spree, already two dead guards. i was freaking out. they rushed the generator and suddenly everthing was black. then a small spark

then both or their heads explode.

Best building game i've played. Great graphics, gameplay is fun and unpredictable which makes it really nice.

Now, let me tell you about my experience.

about i'd say 58 days in game time, i finished building my prison and started bringing in prisoners. I noticed this one prisoner, his name was Nathan... (dont remember his full name but whatever). he was the only minimum security i had so i figured, he's not gonna do much harm.

and boy was i wrong.

He started riots and kills making him very lethal. So I figured, okay, lets make him Super Max.

Couple of days have passed and not much has happened. I added lots of sniper towers, armed Guards, and guard dogs.
One day Nathan LITERALLY started a large riot/ escape attempt. Of course he was one of the few that made it to the exit/ past the reception.

But with all the sniper towers and armed guards that i added days earlier.

It was at this moment that Nathan knew..... he ♥♥♥♥ed up.

I original played this when it was release in early access and enjoyed the sandbox prison environment. Now that it has released the game has steamwork support to share prisons, lots of bug fixes a campaign and random events. There is still some roughness to the UI but the game is improved and enjoyable. There is also an escape mode, which I haven't yet played but looks to put you in the place of the prisoner and attempt to escape. If you enjoy building management games, this will be right up your street.

Heist, anyone?

Ok, although you can't perform heists in this game, you can pretend that you where taken here for failing one.

- Pros
  • Extremely detailed gameplay
  • The implementation of temperature is cool (pun intended), but sometimes seems like the game could just do without it (it can be disabled)
  • Great fun to play as the prisoner either in your own prison or one for the Steam Workshop

  • Sometimes it gets a little frustrating when you cant cross over power cables coming from different power generators, but it is something I can live with
  • It takes a reasonably long amount of time to collect all the Bible pages and Polaroids which is annoying because it is an achievement to collect them all, meaning that achievement will take a while to get
  • In Prison escape mode it is sometimes easy to slip past metal detectors which takes some of the challenge away from the game, but again it is fixable by not doing it

-Features I'd like to see
  • Multiplayer!!! Specifically in the prsion escape mode as it would be great to tag along with a friend and escape a prison together
  • As temperature was added a little while back it would be nice to see A/C to cool the prison rather than just windows (not the operating system)

Now unfortunately no free cake or other confectionaries are included with this game, but it is a small sacrifice to make with such a well developed game.

Achievement difficulty: Easy-Medium

Recommendation:I personally highly recommend it especially if you like games such as Simcity but with a twist, but without the city building bit but like the economy and stuff is some extent.

I have a fairly large sandbox prison, plenty of guards, and extremely harsh punishments of solitary for up to 40+ hours just for having a spoon in your pocket. I had 50+ prisoners in solitary at any given time, but that wasn't enough for me. I pulled all of my guards out of the cell blocks, and locked the doors. Days later, what I was hoping for had happened.

>Hire 50 armed guards
>Split them up and station them near the cellblock doors which the prisoners would break through at any moment
>Free-fire enabled

Long story short, DEATHS(today): 210, all of these were prisoners.
Just buy the game already, come on!

This is by far one of my more favorite games. Every prison has a different outcome. Be it flows smooth and steady, or the prisoners get roudy and up-in-arms and start riots to big for riot police to handle.

-Would enrage all the prisoners again
