Gamma Build: 63180 - Multi-planet Starts!

March 20th, 2014

Gamma is definitely here now, folks, and we're continuing to tune the experience to make it even better. This update focuses on performance and improvements to numerous areas of the game from lighting to art to the server browser. Also present in this build? A giant bedrock feature: multi-planet starting points.

Multi-Planet Starting Spots!
- We've added them. To use them, make a new custom system in the System Editor and flip them on for whatever planet you desire. Then, commence annihilation.
- The AI can now use multi-planet starts, too.

New Commander!
- The Imperial Invictus is now available to all players! This robot is pretty serious, so go check him out in the Armory.

- Updated art for a number of units, including the nuke launcher and ammo, and the anti-nuke launcher and ammo

- Updates to the Server Browser. Players can see more information about games before joining a lobby now.

Technical Stuff!
- Significant graphics change to lighting. This should help improve frame rates for a number of players.
- Improvements to the build bar. This provides more efficiency information while you're playing
- Improvements to spectating! We're working hard to make the job of casting easier, and the fun of simply watching more accessible!
- Ongoing improvements to game audio

Important Notes!
- Please disable all mods until you know which ones work! This build changes a lot of the underlying UI systems.
- Make sure your drivers are updated!

Gamma Build: 62857

New art! More fixes! Smarter formations! New spectating options! We're in the process of tightening the Gamma experience across the board, and this week's huge update packs lots of incredible new additions and improvements.

For instance! We've taken spectator mode to 11 by allowing spectators to focus on teams and see their resources in real-time. Formations now understand position -- flame tanks will now prefer the front, while smaller non-knockout units will prefer the back. Also, we've re-added the ability for players to load systems in the background.

We've got lots more, too, so check out these notes:

- Added support for full summaries of teams playing.
- You can also focus on individual teams.
- Added a new panel on the side to facilitate this.

- Players will now receive even more information when joining and leaving.
- Improvements to joining.
- Improved planet generation while in lobby.

- Added a new skins for laser turret.

System Editor!
- Added new tag for starting planet. This is in preparation for multi-planet spawns!

- Added even more general improvements.

- Units now have preferred positions.

Bug Fixes
- Planet smashing bug addressed.
- A couple of lobby bugs have been squashed.
- A number of memory leaks have been fixed.
- Addressed some UI crashes.

  • Instant Access - Gives you access to the game right now during the beta period -- and after when Planetary Annihilation releases this winter.
  • Theta Commander: Commanders are front and center in PA, and the Theta commander is a unique shell design only available to those who purchase the game in Early Access or pre-purchase the title at a later date. It is a distinguishing symbol of your support.

Control rumbling, powerful tanks of war, massive bomber jets, and an assortment of subs, bots, orbital units, and battleships. Use entire planets as bases and then send your war machine to other celestial bodies. Play with up to 10 players in epic free-for-alls or battle against AI. Strategy on a massive scale, conquering planets, invading solar systems, smashing moons. What's not to like?

PA is still in development, but already great fun, I have to say, and it's already starting to show that it will go where no RTS has gone before when it comes to gameplay.

As of early 2014, the real innovation is beginning to show, as Uber has started implementing important gameplay functionality. Area commands and PiP windows turn the task of managing whole planets into a breeze, while new units such as the stargate-like teleporter shows off how interesting solar system-wide warfare will be.

The game is taking a big step forward to completion, with a new orchestral score and lots of menu and gameplay polish being implemented.

If you feel that youre interested in the game and would like to contribute towards the development, I recommend going for it now. It has one of the best forum communities I ever had the pleasure to be a part of, and the developers engage with them on a daily basis, and actually listen to what the community wants.

Otherwise, the price will go lower once the final product launches, and if you prefer a polished experience rather than a rapidly changing gamma, I recommend holding off for a while.

In summary, if you loved Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander, but would like to take it a couple steps further, this is a game for you.

While many people may spend their time arguing and squabbling over the price or what the game should be like, I would like to go in a different direction.

[Note]: I play on the stand alone browser, that is why my time on steam may seem low. If you contest my veterancy please go look up OathAlliance on youtube. That is my channel and it chronicles some of my +100 hours in game.

[Note]: I'm doing my best to keep this up to date with every major game update. It might be a little bit behind the current build however.

Key Features(What makes it, it)
- Planetary Combat - Why settle for flat polygon maps that block you from flanking when you can attack from literally any direction(except from underground)?
- Interplanetary - When you lose one world move to another. War doesn't take a holiday as long as there's worlds to conquer!
- Interplanetary Nukes - Enemy on an orbiting moon? Nuke him!
- Planet destruction - Why spend hours nuking all of your opponent's bases when you can just destroy the whole planet?
- Massive scale warfare - Tired of having that dinky little 1k unit cap? How about swarming your opponent with 10k of bots(game supports 10k doxen atm)!
- More little things that would be a pain to write down -

So now you're like "That sounds cool! But, why isn't it like that? Where's all the cool stuff!?". Well, let us remember that this is Gamma not Gamma as in "almost done teaser demo like BF4" this is literally "We are throwing in tons of awsomely big features that we've been working on throughout beta".

What's coming?
- More units and buildings! - Over 50 units are supposed to be in the game not including a host of buildings to accompany them!
- More gameplay features/UI updates/more game types! - It says it all!
- Co-op galactic FREAKING WAR! - Say goodbye to those boring campaigns that take away half the fun items. Just destroy the galaxy over and over again for fun!
- 40 Player Games! - Killing everyone you know in a 40 way FFA is BOSS!
- Even more things that are small and not worth my time writing! -

So, the final question. Is it worth the $? Well, that would be up to you. I paid over $100 during the Kickstarter, I've been in since the ALPHA(people who'd like to challenge my veteran status can check out my youtube @OathAlliance) and it's been worth my money. If are willing to accept that it's not complete and that you get to watch it grow and become even better than it was before whilst gaming, then go for it. If you simply want a finished game with all the nice shiny features and polished gameplay, wait until release.

I'm not here to tell you what to do. This is simply a guide to help you on your path.

Updates have added the following:
More Units: Flame Tanks, Gunships, Sniper Bots, with more coming.
Teleporter: Insta-Transport to the other side(planets, bases, etc)
Artillery acting like artillery: Up and over not straight.
Cheaper Units: More units, less nucks!
Optimization: Particle effects are now GPU rendered!
Transport Unit: Carry your units around like a pro.
Main Menu UI update: It's SO pretty!
More social features: You can add friends!

Upcoming in more updates:
More Aggressive AI: Stronger, faster, deadlier.
Graphics update: Beauty just got more beautiful.
Balance work: It's barely been done!
Optimization: Always more work to do!
UI updates: First pass of the second pass!
Bug fixes!: Uber hates bugs as much as we do, they're doing their best to squash the little buggers.

If you're a big fan of Supreme Commander and the old Total Annihilation, add these plus planet smashing, and yeah, Planetary Annihilation. Worth it.

Great Concept!

I have been following this game since it's early development, and seeing it nearly finished I decided to buy it, althought £40 may be a bit expensive and I had my doubts they're all gone now!

There are still several large bugs in the game which can make it difficult to play or not feel quite right but once you get past this all of their claims keep turning out to be true.

Well worth a play! Highly Recommended!

Got blown up on the starting planet, hid commander on a moon came back with a huge army and had my vengance. The music is cool too 100/10
