Planetary Annihilation shows in the test a lot of potential, but it quickly becomes clear: The Kickstarter-funded and highly ambitious strategy has left the game early access phase too early.
Two years after the launch on Kickstarter Planetary Annihilation has finally appeared a year later than originally planned. Who Supreme Commander knows that feels right at home in Planetary Annihilation:
The Commander, we have constructed the first factories, spit out the other units and combat troops. For the construction we need two resources: metal and energy. Here, the construction of buildings and units required a great deal of metal, energy is, however, required primarily for the use of radars, teleporters, and the like.
The game is played Planetary Annihilation either in single player mode »Galactic Warfare" or in multiplayer. Galactic Warfare is it touted as "epic single player" with prozedual generated content, in which each game start to offer new challenges. In reality, hiding behind the single player but only a loveless series of skirmish games without appreciable story and cutscenes. We click on a star map around, from solar system to solar system, we encounter an enemy commander, it comes to real-time battle.
Well then, a few hundred thousand dollars were Kickstarter just squandered for the unsatisfactory Single Player - what counts is the multiplayer battles!
These are indeed exciting and clearly the centerpiece, a Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance still has here but in the lead. For particularly at the strategic level provides Planetary Annihilation but clearly too few options: Instead of three fractions there is only one, and their tech tree is more limited than that of any of the great role models. Thus, there are only two instead of three performance levels, experimental units are completely missing.
The RAM problem is not the only technical flaw of Planetary Annihilation. In this case, the title looks graphically very appealing: Instead of excessive details, the units offer a simple look. And so corny it sounds slow - the look is simple voices, everything fits together perfectly. If it comes to fighting, provide great lighting effects for an eerie mood - we back up just above the planet's atmosphere, while providing hundreds of tanks and robots among us a ground battle, that may well provide the creeps. Especially in combination with the fantastic orchestral soundtrack.
But as already mentioned: the technology running anything but smoothly. The official minimum requirements can be good and like to forget, crashes are inevitable so. Who wants to see more than just two planets per system, it is imperative more than four gigabytes of RAM in the computer have, and planets with very many trees are absolute hardware eaters.
I'm disappointed in Planetary Annihilation. Seven years after the Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance I would have expected much more. The gameplay is shallower than in the prototype and even offers compared to Total Annihilation less strategic opportunities and scope, despite the new orbital plane. The single player is unloving and not recommended, tutorial and game experience are a bad joke and let beginners hopelessly alone.
Combined with many small and major bugs, an unstable technology in terms of RAM addressing and multiplayer stability, and the lack of promised features like 40-player multiplayer and dedicated servers, Planetary Annihilation is a game full of wasted opportunities. The publication was hasty, as there is no doubt. That must clarify a retest in a few months - until then you have better chances to Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance.
Planetary Annihilation is a good, challenging RTS designed along very familiar lines. Should have been a great, massive RTS in the tradition of Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander, but crippled by technical issues. I would recommend it for genre fans.
Score: 69 / 100
