The only reason why i gave this game a chance - Devolver Digital

Luftrausers is a Bullethell with great handling, music that totally fits the game.
Less than 256 colours but a lot more fun than some games with 65536.
If you enjoy shmups like Really Big Sky a.s.o. Luftrausers should get a cosy place in your library.

Thanks to Devolver Digital for publishing another great title!

My first time playing this game I was swearing with the vocabulary of a well educated sailor. I kept dying and had no idea WTF I was doing. Eventually I got the gist of the controls and experimented. After that I was hooked.

With only 4 keys (Left, Right, Boost and Fire) you'd think it'd be easy. Just pop in, hold Up/Boost, fly around and shoot things... and you'd be wrong. The controls may seem simple, but it's one of those games where that simplicity leads to a whole load of complexity when it comes to mastering this game. You have to get used to the idea of letting your plane freefall now and again, boosting at the right time and dodging bullets. Get enough enemies on screen (and off) and the game begins to remind me of Japanese Bullet Hell shooters, there is that much going on, and it's trying to kill you.

As you gain higher and higher scores and complete challenges, you level up, unlocking new parts for you plane, letting you customize it (doing so even changes the planes name). And each part has a series of challenges attached to it, so what challenges you have change depending on which parts your using.

Seriously, for $10 this is a ♥♥♥♥ing amazing game and one well worth looking into even if you don't like air combat games, because this is very, very far from what you'd get in something like Jane's.

This is a brilliant little arcade style game. Incidentaly I picked this up in a Humble Bundle, but already before I start this review I'd say that it is definitly worth full price!
Luftrausers is an oldschool arcade style game, with focus on racking up as many points as possible, while sustaining a multiplier. To do this you gun down hundreds of planes, ships, and various modifications and bosstypes of these.
The game does however feature some progression, in that you will be offered various jobs to complete, and by doing that you will progressively unlock parts to your plane, which comes with more jobs to do. There is also colourschemes to unlock, since the artstyle is uses a simple 4-5 colour pallette.
The unlockable parts gives a whole lot of vararity, and there's a bunch of different playstyles, depending on how you combine your plane. Personally I'm a big fan of the laser+melee body+booster engine combo.
Gameplay continues to be fun, and even after you have completed all jobs and unlocked all parts, there is more to do, a hardcore mode will unlock, which is really hardcore. You will basically die within seconds, and this mode comes with additional jobs to do.
Luftrausers is ultmatively a bunch of fun, with flying mechanics that feel really awesome, and gamplay that keeps on giving. It does however run in some wierd aspect ratio (most likely 4:3) and there is no way to make it wide screen as far as I have seen, but this doesn't really detract from the game in any way.

I would definitly reccomend this game if you are into arcade style games with scores and multipliers. Or if you just want to waste some time shooting thing out of a brown sky.
Go get it!

I got this one in a Humble Bundle, so I'm gonna try to be objective. TRY. Here we go...

I get the whole "retro" thing, I really do...up to a reasonable point. I thought both Lone Survivor and Hotline Miami were very smart, resourceful games in their own ways...games which took their pixel-y limitations and arguably turned them into not only positives, but true aesthetic "decisions". But does anybody really want or "need" a 2D shoot-'em-up THIS primitive and THIS ugly in this day and age? I was at least expecting some interesting (read: semi-realistic) physics, but you literally just go up and down and in and out of the water (did real planes ever actually do this?) and perpetually hold down the fire button, 'cause frankly there doesn't seem much point in ever letting go out of it. In fact I swear - and this may just be deluded childhood memories - but I honestly could swear that ASTEROIDS had more compelling physics than this. And am I wrong, but do we basically see all there is to see in the first few minutes of gameplay?

I'm honestly just bemused, more than anything. But a quick glance at the overwhelmingly positive Steam reviews and a Metascore of EIGHTY - count 'em and weep, mother♥♥♥♥in' EIGHTY ya'll - suggests that I just don't know my shooters from my ♥♥♥♥ters and should probably just keep my unenlightened, fool mouth shut. Maybe I just outgrew games this simplistic and primal when I was in my single digits, who knows...so in the interests of being open-minded, I'll just say...if it's a truly, defiantly "old-school" 2D shooter you're looking for, like the type you'd feed twenty cent coins into in the early 80s, then you may well find something to love here. Me, I'm kinda glad video games have evolved past the stone age, even if the likes of Bioshock Infinite have arguably gone a little too far in the OPPOSITE direction. Each to their own...

Verdict: 5/10.

An extraordinarily simple game that only uses 4 controls for gameplay, LUFTRAUSERS is a game that can be played over and over without getting old.

I defended the developers of this game against attacks over its creative content and aesthetic only to have Vlambeer come out as anti GamerGate.

I will never support developer again. Disapointed.
