TLDR:
The game is great, but a controller is near mandatory.

Long version:

Game Mechanics
-This game's combat is really customizable, but at the same time it isn't. Let me explain.
The core basics of the combat mechanics are to fill "unions" (think small parties of around 3-5 warriors) which are handled as 1 unit, and then use a "formation" (exactly what it sounds like) that complements what you would like them to achieve. Want them to hit things hard and fast? Use melee formation... Mage? Support? Use magic formation etc.. .
There is also a "tactical" feel to combat, Unions can flank, intercept, deadlock... And do a lot of other things which will influence how much damage is done to you, or the the enemy. Alongside the fact that you are usually controlling 2-3 "unions", the combat screen looks ♥♥♥♥ing great since that translates to around 15-20 warriors killing things.

The downside of combat is as follows:
-you can't change the equipment of your party. There are lots of weapons to be made and found, many which are race specific, but you can't equip it on the NPCs. In order for an NPC to change their weapon(s) you A) have to have the weapon and B) the NPC has to ask you to use the weapon.

-There are also a lot of classes/jobs but you are not told what their stats growths are, nor their upgrade paths. Sure you can look at a character's stats but apart from the obvious differences between a mage and warrior, it be hard to place an unit into a role - which is significant when forming an union/formation.

Story
- The story, and much around it, just feels O.K...
- The characters are O.K - I personally dislike the MC (think cliche dumbass anime protagonist)
- The voice acting, save for a few characters, is O.K.
- If you don't go back and re-explore towns after certain events, you can miss A LOT of side quests.
Don't get me wrong, it is not a bad story but its not a great one either.

Visual, Sound & Performance.
- I have experienced very few bugs, and the ones that I have seen have been visual ones. (helicopter capes)
- I have played on max settings, with no fps drops. The world looks good, but the combat screen is definitely much better.
- The music is great. There are lots of different tunes for different towns, and different stages in combat.
- A controller is a must. Keyboard/Mouse is supported but it felt somewhat clunky, there are quick time events that trigger higher speed/dmg - these can be nightmares for keyboard users. There is an option to make them automatic at the downside that they computer can actually miss the trigger (probably for balance purposes)

Overall a great game for its price.

One of the most unique JRPGs I have ever played. The story is good, but what stands out is the challenging tactical battle system.

This is one of the best games i played and is hugely underestimeted. If you just play the storyline you might miss 80% off the game.

People will like this...I dont however. Its just to slow and boring for me. Thats about as much as I can say.
If what you see in the trailer excites you pick it up. I grabbed it on a whim - I just think im too old to give games like this any time to develop.

Great game, people say the combat is all rng but it's about building your units correctly to get the options in battle that you want, you have to actuly pay attention to which units you group together in order to get what you want. People just simply don't understand the mechanics.

I wouldn't say it has the best story but for the price now it's worth it, there are so many ways you can build the characters without needed to control there equipment there is more strategy to this game then people realise.

I wish there was more games like this in 2016

I love me some jrpgs, but I haven't enjoyed one quite like this in some time. The game is huge and there is plenty to do. Setting up the parties and setting what works well is one of my favorite aspects. If you like jrpgs give this a shot, you won't be disappointed.

As always you can count on Square Enix to make a great JRPG. With captivating cinematic approach, I found myself dazed with the simple but well-written story and the voice acting here is great too.
The only drawback I encountered so far is the control. It does not always working even with the controller but not really affecting the experience.

An underrated game indeed :)

The first half of this game is compelling if only for its unique battle system. The story is meh, but it is super addictive filling out your roster.

Unfortunately, the second half falls flat on its face. The already meh story goes bonkers in all the wrong ways and the combat plateaus. The latter is directly due to the game limiting your squad to the max you got in the first half rather than continue to build up your forces further. Without what is really the only compelling reason to play, the game quickly gets stale and incredibly boring.

JRPG Army-based Tactics game.
Overwhelming and invisible mechanics often leave you questioning how your characters will hold up as the game progresses.

I played the xbox 360 version of this game to completion. The steam version is much more balanced and removes the menacing command unit number restriction.

Play at your own risk, it is very possible to dump 40 hours into this game, only to have to restart from scratch if save files are not managed properly.

Control the growth of your teammates, improve them with the stuff you farm. Beautiful. And the twins are hot.

Didn't expect much from this game but was amazed by how much fun I would have with it. Just make sure you have a controller.
