New Features & Workshop Integration for Godus on Steam

Today we’re thrilled to confirm that the team here at 22cans have commenced our PC-focused sprint.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be looking to implement a few of the suggestions and requests you’ve shared with us for features and functions in the game – you’re certainly not short of good ideas! However, you’ll be pleased to hear we’ve already added a few into the game already, read on for details.

Brand new features for Godus on Steam

We’re overjoyed to inform you that our designers, coders, artists and animators have been very busy over the last week in their effort to get some desktop-exclusive features over to our Steam community as quickly as possible.

Downloading the updated build from the main branch of Steam today will net you the following improvements to Godus:
  • Raise land power – create mountains or fill holes and pits by double-clicking!
  • Lower land power – flatten mountains or dig holes by double-clicking!
  • Water Spring Gift – draw forth a source of water from which you can sculpt rivers and waterfalls!
  • Reduced wait timers for building Temples
  • Ability to skip tutorial
  • Greater diversity in your Followers’ appearance
  • Upgradeable god powers
But wait, there’s more! We’re hoping to add the following features before the end of this week:
  • Customisable key bindings – soon you’ll be able to assign hot keys for god powers!
  • Level Editor, including procedural terrain generator – create your own, unique Homeworlds!
  • Ranged combat
    • New military Settlement
    • Archer Followers, who will attack threats
    • Archer Astari, who will attack your Settlements aggressively
  • Ability to move Abodes, Shrines and Gifts once placed
  • Improvements to Raising and Lowering land god powers
Further out, we’d very much like to spend time looking into making further improvements to our sculpting mechanics. While nothing’s set in stone right now, we’d really like to give you the ability to sculpt rivers and staircases more easily and intuitively.

Balance File Editor update on main branch of Steam

We're releasing the initial version of the Balance File Editor to the main branch of Godus on Steam. While this tool is not yet 100% feature complete, we think it is stable enough for a full release.

This tool, which we described in full here on our blog, enables you to completely change how the game feels and behaves. In brief, by changing the game’s stats in the two currently available tabs (Abodes and Followers) and pressing Update Game in the Update tab, you can set changes that affect how Godus plays in all kinds of ways.

Steam Workshop integration

We’ve now brought Steam Workshop functionality to the Balance File Editor, enabling you to name your mod and upload it to Steam so that you can share your modifications with the entire Godus community.

Here’s how it works:
  1. You can now go back into the update tab, name your mod and upload it to the Steam Workshop.

  2. Once it's uploaded you can access the page for your mod, change the description, add an image and share it with the world.

  3. Please note that in order to make your modifications public you must first accept the Terms and Conditions for Steam Workshop.

  4. While in the workshop you browse other people's mods and subscribe to them.

  5. Once you've subscribed you'll find it in your game under the Update tab under ‘Select Subscribed Mod’.
Future improvements

In addition to the ability to edit the behaviours of your Farms, Mines, Abodes and Followers, we’ll soon be updating the tool to enables you to modify Shrines, Beacons, Settlements and god powers as well.

As soon as we have more info about these features, we’ll provide you with an update.

Balance File Editing Tool Available on Steam Opt-in Branch

Good news for everyone playing Godus on Steam Early Access – you now have access to a beta version of the Balance File Editor we first detailed in this blog update. You can find it on the game’s opt-in branch and there’s details on how to access that in this forum post: How to Access Developer Builds

The Balance File Editor is an in-game tool for editing the values that govern the behaviour of your Followers and Abodes. Once you're happy with your modifications, you can share them with your friends and the community via the Steam forums.

We actually released the tool last Friday, however we wanted to wait a week before making a big, splashy announcement to catch any major bugs. Thanks to the feedback supplied by the regulars on our Steam forum, we released an update for the tool yesterday that fixed a few issues.

How the Balance File Editor works

If you open the Settings menu (press escape or click on the button in the top right), you'll see a new option: "Change Balance".

Inside this menu, you'll see the Abodes balance table. Let's change one of the values:

Click on the capacity of the Shelter. This will highlight the value.

Now replace that 2 with a 6 and press enter or the green check mark.

Go into the "Update" tab and press "Update Game".

If you look at your world and click on one of the little tents, you will see it now sprogs more people. Your tents now have six Followers in them.

Coming soon: Steam Workshop integration

The Balance File Editor is currently in beta, which means that it’s a pre-release version of the final tool. It may be unstable and it is currently missing features that will be included in the final release.

One of these features is Steam Workshop integration, which we’re hoping to implement very soon. This feature will allow you to name your mod and upload it directly to the Steam Workshop from within the game.

Once it's uploaded, you’ll be able to access the page for your mod, change the description, add an image and share it with the world.

You’ll also be able browse other people's mods in the workshop and subscribe to them. Once you've subscribed, you'll find it in your game in the Update tab under “Select Subscribed Mod”.

More features to come

Here’s a few of the additional values we want to add to the tool in the coming weeks for you to play with:
  • Shrine build times/vision radius
  • Farm/Mine resource generation times for Wheat/Ore
  • Settlement times
  • Belief costs for God powers

Tundra Tumble Voyage - first map bug

We’ve received a few reports lately from players of Godus on both iOS and Steam Early Access about an issue with the Tundra Tumble voyage mission.

As you're playing through the Tundra Tumble voyage, you may come across the auto-completion bug or are stuck with only the first map as playable and all other maps with three stars.

What's causing this bug?!

This bug has continued over from the Spooky Shore's event and has carried your reward points over. Meaning, once you've completed the first Tundra Tumble your points from that mission get added up with your Spooky Shores event points, causing Godus to think that you've already completed Tundra Tumble.

What are we doing about this bug?

Right now, we're currently investigating this bug and we apologise for any inconvenience.

Cross-platform development

Our development proceeds through sprints that may have differing platform focuses. As such, much of the gameplay available to you in v2.2 is the result of a recent mobile-focused sprint and we intend to progress to a PC-focused sprint within the coming months. Please take this into consideration, as while adjustments will continue to be made to the PC platform to account for the game's differing payment model (buy-to-play on PC & free-to-play on mobile), some areas of balance and design may retain certain elements of the mobile version for the time being.

I want to like this game. I have played over 30 hours and have tried to feel out and understand this concept of using REAL time as the main form of currency in this rather UNgodly city builder. This attempt by 22cans to carry over Gems from the mobile version (gems being the currency that users pay real money for in the iOS version) and trying to squeeze them into the PC version is absolutely a bummer. For a few days I started to think that it might work alright, but in the end its just an empty currency middle man that really doesn't feel like it belongs in a game I have already purchased for a premium price. All the gems in the world are currently not helping me reduce the absurd wait times for generating specialized followers (farmers, miners) one of my wait times is currently 21 hours (REAL HOURS) for 1 new farmer to be produced. That 1 new farmer allows me to increase my total farms by 1 and makes me shudder at the future cards that have yet to be unlocked that require... 70 farms... or worse... 50 Mines. That is literally weeks of forced waiting just to unlock in game functions that are less than enticing. And like everything else in the game, the price and wait times goes up with every added specialized follower or item placed. At this rate, I would assume the last farmer of my settlement will take around 2 days to be produced. 22cans wants you to believe that these "valuable gems" are their gift to us gamers who want to "play at our own pace" when really its just a misplaced ported currency that might make sense in a freemium mobile game model where you want your casual pocket gamers to be dropping $5-50 a pop for small offerings of gems that are really only used to bypass timers. How fun. These gems in their current form do not belong in a paid PC title.

Not that you're reading any of these complaints, Peter Molyneux, but I was a big fan back in the days of Populous and up to Black and White, but you have proven time and time again since then that you are completely out of touch with what your fans (and now your duped financial backers) want. 21 hours for a single farmer Peter? What PC gamer has the time to check in constantly to collect belief? How have you managed to take such neat looking little sandbox antfarm with so much potential and turn it into a game about waiting and tedious collection of such ridiculously related resources? You sold your backers on the idea that you were going into this without a publisher telling us that this would lead to completely unhindered creativity and maximize community influence on the product. How did you think we would feel when you reveal that you are building this game around a freemium mobile business model (because you DID end up partnering with a publisher after all) and we the PC users and financial backers of this game are left with a ported version of it that uses the exact same mechanics of your mediocre pay to win "app" games. Waiting so long for relatively unexciting things to happen completely disrespects the time of the gamers who want to sit down and actually play a game for more than thr snippets of time between the various and superfluos wait timers. Im lucky to get a half hour before I literally run out of things I can possibly do.

You've lost it Molyneux, or you've just gradually become more and more of a con man over the years. This kickstarter is almost theft as you used our money (when you have millions) to fund a game that you are hoping will saturate app markets and shine just enough when compared to the morass of bad free to play games so that you can... what... sell gems for a living and retire this profession you obviously stopped caring about? Next time, do it with your own money, chap.

Do NOT buy this game unless you are really okay with high wait times. It is NOT free-to-play, but it has elements that make it feel that way. The devs are theoretically working on balance issues, and to give them credit, gameplay engineering should probably be what they get working right now. However, there are serious timing/balance/resource issues with the game that make this frustrating gameplay experience. I'd recommend anyone curious about this to follow the forums, and "wait and see" the game finished before plunking down $20. That said, if you can find it on a 90% off deal, go for it, because the game really does have a lot of potential.

Bottom line: Wait until this game is finished, then read the reviews before you decide.

I bought this game when it first came out. I believed in the Molyneux. I played for an hour or so, and it was kinda fun, but it was annoying to stretch all the lands and crap and it didn't work well. So I put it away. It's early access after all, I can forgive it.

I check back often, because I realized i've been Molyneux'd... again. This game is the same as Spacebase and that other game that finished EA early, except this won't, in fact it'll probably never be ready because they made it into an iOS game too. Which means they cut back on their features. Which means.... we've been Molyneux'd again.

Don't buy this game. I don't know why I keep falling for this man's lies. But I do. I am an idiot. Like someone who keeps going back to their mate who says "Please baby, i'll change, this is it for real, I mean it this time. I'm sorry." and then I get cheated on again.

Save your money. Donate it to charity instead.

don't make mistake of investing in unfinished junk. There's only one game mode, and the main aspect of "sculpting" costs "belief". The devs have every attention of it playing like clash of clans, where you have to log in several times a day to run your operations. In all honestly, this a mobile bleedcash game that they tried to convert to pc, and doesn't function.


another steam early access game that's a flop. Voyages are supposed to be a main feature of the game, but don't work after the first voyage. A simple trip to the steam forums or google reveals the devs are ignoring it, and if you report a ticket you'll just get chewed out for it.

! This game is still pretty bare bones at the moment. !

Every week I check to see if there's an update that I hope with it would come big changes or something new but so far it stayed pretty much the same with only a minor changes here and there and other changes that made the game somewhat worse in my opinion.

THIS IS still in Early Access and I have learned from my mistake: NEVER buy anything in Early Access because stuff like this, that is like a demo, should actually be free. No one should ever spend money on something that doesn't even have a clear objective given or something that you can just be satisfied with. I had none of that playing Godus.

Progression is DAMN SLOW, even with gems used. The way Godus works would be okay for mobiles or.. Facebook, I guess, as you don't play with it all day... But on PC? I have to wait almost 2 days for something to get done? REALLY??

Also the tutorials at the beginning which had been recently added are designed for mobile as well which is pretty obvious because of the finger image shown instead of a mouse... yeah. I feel like I'm just playing a mobile or facebook game with all the waiting on the PC and I'm not really too happy about that.

I literally killed 100 followers (dropped them in that pit of doom) in one go to see if it makes a difference spending all these gems I got out of them, to my surprise, it didn't change anything.. Which also made me concerned about the mobile version because I know some people just waste their money in hopes that they can finally DO SOMETHING only to realize they have another thing stopping them.
They keep saying you get them with "Skill" but I don't see what's so skillful about opening random chests and draggi-- I mean, leashing miners to a shiny gem pit and HOPE there are actually some gems there.
I actually have yet to see gems as rewards for the Voyage Mode, or whatever it's called in English because I'm ping-ponging around between German and English.

There's a happiness meter but once you get rid of the Asari being an evil god makes it rather useless. The Asari are absolutely no big threat to me, I just drop some meteors and squish them while they are parting and that does the job.

For some reason I have no idea why they took it away were the battles that were actually the only thing that kept me entertained as I actually got to use my god powers and feel great about it. Now, though? We got this Voyage mode where I always hope the damn Rain of Purity works because, again, it just doesn't work with using the mouse they way I want it to, also the mouse quite frequently bugs out when using it... Hoooorayyy?? And after hearing my followers' whistling for the 30th time it just got really boring.

Also the scultping... I feel the sculpting would work great on mobile... But I just CAN'T make a whole layer vanish with a single mouse stroke like the tutorials always tell me I could.

I don't know why I got this game to begin with. I was really hoping for something here and after such a long time I'm just.. well... Really disappointed.

Unless we get some major updates I won't even bother trying to find some form of entertainment out of this game.

Wish they were obligated to warn people of generic iOS ports to Steam, I would never have given Molyneux the money.

OK so after playing the game for 85hrs I'm ready to give my first review on steam.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME AT FULL PRICE. (If you only have to spend a couple dollars or pounds to buy it then yes its worth wasting a couple days playing)

I feel like I'm being abused by the developers of this game.

Constant swapping between worlds to send hundreds of followers to the pit of doom just to move the game forward at a more reasonable pace.

I saw the kickstarter for this and got really excited so when the opportunity came along to buy it for a couple pound I jumped in.

Now let me be clear this is a mobile game to make money out of muppets, this is not a PC game and should not be marketed as such.

The game drags along at an agonising pace because the devs have slowed it down to a crawl to make money from mobile users.

You will spend hours killing followers to get gems to then buy stuff to speed it along.

You will spend hours roaming the map collecting resourses with your mouse, because auto collection of resources costs gems (and ore and wheat auto collection is not available to me after 85 hrs of play)

I'm stopping playing this as of today and I may check back in a year or so to see if you have sorted out the steam version.

That being said the game has a lot of potential but the devs have to come to the conclusion that PC gamers are not mobile gamers.

I don't even want to whine on about everything that's been stripped from the game. I lost hope when this became a game that a phone could run... Poor excuse of a pc game, initial concept somewhere along the lines seemed so promising. I was really hoping you were going to make like a Black & White 2 (best game ever) where the landscape was mouldable and infinite. Nah, ♥♥♥♥ knows what you were trying to make here. It's like watching moss grow. I can't even begin to fathom how you could redeem yourself, even a refund isn't enough for the time I've wasted waiting for this to turn into something promising. It's a ♥♥♥♥-storm of clicking, nothing really happening, no purpose, no player input. You've royally ♥♥♥♥ed up. Royally.

Once upon a time this game was okay, now it is useless. Welcome to playing a phone game on your computer. It takes ages for anything to happen (as if you are supposed to build something and then check it later). Constant bombardment about how the dev's like gems (again just a phone game). Save yourself the money and the boredom. Don't bother buying this game.

Excruciatingly slow and boring. After the complete revamp it's much less obtuse and a little less full of itself, but it's still taking a pace that *might* work for a microtransaction-driven short-play-session game; on a PC where I'm looking to play something for half an hour or an hour I find myself sitting reading a book for 5 to 10 minutes at a time while waiting for the game to make progress by itself. There are a few things to click then, before I go back to my book.

Very disappointed to have backed.

Well, judging at the number of negative reviews/ thumbs down, you'd not expect much from this game. And you are right. At its' infancy, the game was a proper PC game, unlike now, a bloody mobile game on a PC platform. Waste of money,

Only two real lessons i have learnt with this waiting simulator.

1st: Don't ever never trust Moulyneux anymore.
2nd: If you want a real Populous or Black and White heir, wait for it. You will not find it in Godus.

Don't buy it yet! Still to much of a work in progress and its more of a freemium mobile game at the moment.

But I still hold onto hope they (22cans) can pull a rabbit out of the bag.
