A delightful simple story. Gone Home seems to have been on a fence over the years, because some people love it, while others act as if it is cheap.

I turned out to be one of the people who loved it - and I played this game long after tons of people argued on all sides, so it wasn't like I necessarily went in blind. Despite that, Gone Home held up quite a bit. I can understand that it's not necessarily a "game", as the term "walking simulator" has been used for years now. But at the same time, that doesn't mean that it isn't nice or fun to play.

You are essentially learning a story while reading documents, exploring and finding little objects and pieces, and also listening to journal entries. Very simple, easy to do for the most part. But it was still very enjoyable.

From my perspective, games like this one are just a newer/different way of reading a book or short story. And I like that, so long as things are put together well: Gone Home certainly was. There's not really that much to puzzle you, but it was fine because everything I came across was interesting enough to me. The house is really nice looking and its hidden passageways certainly kept me intrigued, especially with some of the more odd things you find along the way. There are some key points in the family story that are easy to miss if you do not find enough of the items as well, so you definitely have to keep on your toes.

In any case, Gone Home is something that I think some of my personal friends would enjoy to go through, even if it is a short little tale. Some people seem to flat out hate it - and I think a lot of it boils down to people just not liking the style, as they were looking for more game-like material instead of just piecing together a story. People who claim that there isn't a story, however, are... Well, I hate to say it, but it's true - "wrong." You can simply read someone's guide of the chronological log of the documents and things you find to see the story here.

For myself, I went in knowing the entire style of Gone Home and enjoyed it.

I went into this game knowing nothing. All my friends said it was excellent, but no one gave away anything. It took me around 7 months to finish the game, but I'm glad I did. I definitely recommend it, even if you have to take it slow like I did.

As far as I am quite open to "Walking Simulator" genre, this game is absolute and utter torture to bear with.
Lifeless, forcefully pretentious walk around an empty house looking for nothing in particular, feeling boredom tunneling through your skull until you want to shove fork into electric socket just to bring some emotion back to your miserable life.

Won't reccomend even for your worst and dullest friend or relative.

After traveling abroad for a year, Katie returns home to an empty house where her parents and sister reside; only an ominous note is left on the door. You find the spare key, and let yourself in. There's a raging storm that's brewing outside, and thunder rattles overhead consistently as you explore the empty mansion. Gone Home is a simple walking simulator game wherein your ultimate task is to find out where your family has disappeared to, through exploration of the large mansion and the highly interactive contents within.

I'm glad to see that The Fullbright Company got rid of their old first trailer for Gone Home, which basically tried to pass the game off as a horror adventure title by combining the right snippets of dialogue, sound, and notes. It was incredibly misleading, and left me with a bad taste in my mouth after I found out what the game was actually about. I put off playing and reviewing this title for a long time because of it, but I'm happy to see that there are appropriate trailers up on the store page now. That being said, I'm still astonished to see that the developer bans people in the forums for no reason other than not enjoying their product. Before I continue with the review, be wary of this developer due to their unpredictable nature.

It's true that Gone Home is little more than an over-glorified walking simulator. The story that lies within will either greatly appeal to you, or turn you off entirely. Katie explores her family's mansion to discover that her parents are away, and her sister Sam is nowhere to be found. Through the discovery of notes and various other interactive objects, you find out pretty quickly that Sam is a lesbian, and she had fallen in love with a girl from school named Lonnie. Being a teenager, Sam had trouble coping with her feelings, had a good amount of angst against her parents, and the other usual typical teenage stuff that most of us went through.

I for one found the story appealing, not due to its LGBT nature but due to the fact that when I was a teenager I was just as socially awkward as Sam. I had a hard time making friends, and I was often the subject of bullying. There's something that's comforting about this story that I just can't quite put my finger on. That, and I also hung out with the kids that listened to grunge, metal, and riot grrrl music; general outcasts in terms of schoolyard cliques. Speaking of the tunes, this game has an incredible soundtrack for those who enjoy riot grrrl acts such as L7 and Babes in Toyland; although those bands don't appear here, the songs that are included are awesome throwbacks to the 90's grunge and riot grrrl sounds.

The visuals of Gone Home are just okay, and the performance is a little shoddy. Given my rig (specs in profile), I should've been able to maintain a consistent 60 FPS at all times, but there were random dips to the 30's and 40's for no reason. Given the tight hallways and enclosed spaces that you will be in for the entirety of the playthrough, this should not happen on a mid to high end rig. The game itself only lasted me a little under an hour and a half, and I explored and read everything to get the full story behind both the parents' disappearance and where Sam had gone.

Obviously, if you have no way to relate to the story in Gone Home, then you're probably not going to dig it as much. This one is pretty much a personal preference type of game. Is it worth $21.99 CAD even if you're interested? Absolutely not, but the title does go on sale for about $5 during the summer and holidays so pick it up then if you're wanting to play it. The game is also way over-hyped, so don't go in expecting to have your jaw hit the floor in any sort of amazement. It's a decent walking simulator that lets you explore the life of someone else in the 90's, and it's a good time killer for an hour or two. Other than that, there's nothing exceptionally amazing or compelling about Gone Home.

If you're not into walking simulators then this won't change your mind much, however; if you are, then this is a great, atmospheric, and detailed entry in the genre. The environment is interesting, which along with the mood and the music, really manages to pull you in. The story does its job well enough, but in my opinion it falls completely flat at the end. The thing this game excels at is making you feel like you're in the world. Overall, it's not going to amaze you or anything, but it's a fine attempt at a new and different way of telling a story in a video game.

This game is really just an interactive series of journal entries. This isnt a bad thing by any means, but I finished it in about 90 minutes, and I felt that I searched a read everything, so overall it's a little short. Whilst the main story is the focus of the game, exploring and reading everything you can opens up some interesting if not sad subplots. I feel the game will strike a nostalgic chord with anyway who grew up in the mid 90's, so if you like the genre it can be good for a bit of a nostlagic trip. The game was paced well, which allowed you to develop the families timeline and distinguish the defining events throughout, which overall made the game more interesting, which is good becasue it really is just a walking simulator. Overall, I cant reccomend this game at $20, as I dont feel it has enough replay value. If you can get it under $5, then I'd say give it a shot. Also, make sure you know what you're buying, this ISN'T a supernatural thriller.

not worth what it cost. Game took less that 5h to beat and was really really misleading about the mystery (there really isn't one)

Its a shame cause it could have been a really good horror game but the ending left me dissapointed and feeling like I wasted at least 15 of the 20ish$ it cost to buy. The set up and game play are great but the story itself is a let down.

A 2 hour long interactive picture book if you look for EVERYTHING that lasts about an hour at most (maybe longer if you don't read well, actually sit through all the sloooowly spoken dialogue, or have trouble finding stuff, I spent a LOT of time looking for things that just weren't there trying to prove to myself that I didn't waste my money). That's the best way to describe this. Would have made an ok short story, but as a game it's just dull. Pick a thing up, read something or someone talks to you, move to the next thing.

This tends to be my view of all walking sims, they're picture books you interact with, and honestly I'd rather just read it if there's no meat to it. No real puzzles, no challenges and most importantly no failure state means I just can't support this being called a game. And YES there could have been plenty of little challenges to make it a "game". This is the story, from what I remember, of a teenager, they couldn't have owned a puzzle box or two to hold their things? Couldn't have had some diary entries or notes written in code? Couldn't have had a story item hidden and put 2-3 clues for a neat scavenger hunt? Yes I did these things as a teenager, and yes it was fun. You can have walking sims (which are interactive books, not games) and add content that will make it into a game. It's not hard if you try.

Now I love me the hell out of narrative, story is the most important thing in a game to me, but when the story wouldn't even be 20 pages if it were in a book, then why am I paying so much for it in "game" form? If this were 2-3 bucks I'd probably say to give it a try if you like this sort of thing, but for 20 damn bucks? No, not on your life. When you can watch the game on youtube and get the EXACT SAME experience as playing it yourself, then: 1 it's not a game and 2 the dev failed to even try to make it one.

TL;DR: An interactive pop up book basically that's not terrible like some people say, however charging 20 bucks for this "game" is a sure fire sign that the devs are too damn full of themselves. 5 bucks MIGHT be ok for this but not 20 bucks. There are hundreds of much MUCH better games out there with stories as good or better than this that feature actual game play. And for a lot of them you can get 5 or 6 of those games for the same price.

This game was a huge disappointment. You spend a ton of time walking around a big house, examining hundreds of boring everyday objects. There are 3 locked doors and if you walk around long enough you find the keys to open them.

It never gets interesting, and the ending to the story is obvious about halfway through. No challenges, no skill required, not even really any thinking involved. Just walking around clicking mundane objects with no results

I wish I could get my money back on this. Don't waste yours.

If you are not the type of person who enjoys a good book, or slice of life stories, DO NOT BUY THIS

If, like me, you are tha type of person, buy it when you get a discount or via humble bundle

Is a good story, simple story that you can play in a couple of hours. The suspense is great and the story telling is even better.

Since I didn't feel like a deep game due to my cold, I went for some light gaming earlier. Started & finished Gone Home in a single sitting. Cannot remember a previous time doing this. Game is very short which is not automatically a bad thing, mind you. Easily shorter than 3 hours on a first run. And that by collecting all Journal entries, cassettes, pins and whatnot.

So, my thoughts. I went in with pretty much no knowledge of the game beforehand, so the game being a lesbian love-story was not expected. It's a light exploration game with minimal interaction and a focus on passive character development. I do enjoy exploring places and learning about the world via audio logs and texts when done right. This is a mixed bag. First of all, there is too little variation in characters with basically only two people having exposure, Sam, your sister and Lonnie, her love interest. That is a shame since the general cast of people is already very small, less than 10. With only Sam and Lonnie getting spotlight the exploration and adventure portion feels underused. Even though there are tidbits here and there about your parents and the previous home owner, it is just held too superficial with few, unvoiced texts and feels way too overlooked by the writing itself, so it looses any importance it could have had. The love story is done OK with an emphasis on emotions but all other characters besides Sam and Lonnie are done without any emotion at all which makes them look like robots. A real shame since slowly seeing more and more of the house would have fit very nicely by weaving various character arcs into the layout of the home. On that, the many secret passages became a real immersion breaker not by the idea itself - which fits an old, big manor with an interesting previous owner - but by sheer amount and usage. They just got away with it bearing in mind the previous owner but then again, like with other stuff it falters by underutilizing that as well. A little side story about the past owner would have been fitting. But alas, the house feels not enough like a real home but like a playground for Sam & Lonnie who only used those places. It almost feels like neither parents nor the bigger sister are a part of the house at all.
Journal entries (audio logs) were done OK. It's a very little story, written OK as well. Couldn't connect towards the very ending, thinking two kids basically ran away. They are only seventeen. Feels like writers took a very cliche easy way out with the ending by making it overtly emotional with that runaway. A little inconsistency in logic with Sam was also there. At the beginning she writes her sister not to rummage around (and possibly learn anything) but towards the end she explicitly has left her messages in places only accessible by turning over the whole house? Eh, gotta throw a bit of sense out of the window to have emotional ending I guess. That goes for the whole very short game. High on emotion, at times feels forced by sheer lack of any other aspect.
Not sure I'd recommend this. It offers very little in substance and variety. If you can overlook the narrow focus and at times forced story events, you will have some fun exploring the big house and basking in 90s nostalgia though. Wish there was a neutral option on Steam reviews.

Very interesting at the beginning but lost its potential to unfold into interesting gaming experience. Gameplay is basically non-exist , you can touch almost any item but ironically, the interaction with player is empty.

Definitely not worth the price tag !

4/10 for the atmosphere, 3D models and design
