Kentucky Route Zero is a magical realist adventure game about a secret highway in the caves beneath Kentucky, and the mysterious folks who travel it.

Developed by Cardboard Computer (Jake Elliott and Tamas Kemenczy), the game features an original score by Ben Babbitt, along with a suite of old hymns and bluegrass standards recorded by The Bedquilt Ramblers.

The game is split into five acts. Acts I, II and III are available now. The remaining two acts will be released as they're completed. Taken as a whole, Kentucky Route Zero is roughly the length of a summer night.

ACT I

感觉这游戏的主角和一心想要去城堡的土地测量员K有点像(除了年龄 。主角要把某件东西送到dogwood drive(一个不存在的地名 ,游戏没有说这件东西是谁要送给谁,也没有说为什么dogwood drive这个地方在65号公路附近,主角在傍晚停下车在一个小加油站打听dogwood drive,被告知要走0号路(一条不存在的路 ,至于要怎么找到0号路,就和怎么去城堡一样,始终语焉不详。
我想没玩这游戏之前最让人感兴趣的应该就是别具一格的画风了,整个游戏除了车轮和落日我还没有见过一个圆形的物体,全是有棱角的几何形状,虽然是2D游戏,却很有立体感。
如果上网搜一下这游戏的评价,大多把这游戏称为艺术品。我想可能一是因为它的画风,二是因为它和魔幻现实主义(说真的我到现在也不明白作品中要表现出什么才能被称为魔幻现实主义 似乎有关系,游戏中就有一个叫 马尔克斯农场 的地方,很难不让人想到加西亚马尔克斯,进而想到魔幻现实主义。我不敢说这游戏是魔幻现实主义作品,但是超现实元素确实在游戏中占了一席之地。
在一开始的小加油站,主角会拿着提灯下到地下室打开电闸,在地下室会遇见三个围着桌子打牌的人,无论是清嗓子,打招呼还是直接说你们挡着路了请让一下他们都会无视,只说一个二十面的骰子不知道掉到哪儿去了,很好找,因为它在黑暗中会发光。于是我熄灭了提灯,把地上发光的骰子捡了起来,点亮提灯,发现那三人早已不见,只有落满灰尘的桌子,纸牌和三张破旧的椅子。在之后的对话中当主角说到地下室有三个古怪的人的时候,会得到这样的回答:在地下总会发生奇怪的事,尤其是在一片漆黑之中......
之后主角还会被问到是否相信有鬼魂,而当主角在废弃的矿井中驾驶着矿车,如果把灯熄灭,借着电火花的闪光,就能看见矿工们的身影。地下水曾经涌进矿井,被困在地下的矿工最后在一片漆黑中死去了......
我感觉这像是约翰康奈利常写的故事。
另外这游戏几乎没有背景音乐,全是环境音效,而且对话也没有配音,大段的文字也不少,我想这是玩这游戏会遇到的最大的困难了(这游戏的开头我已经看了三次了 。与其说玩家是在玩游戏不如说是在读剧本,无论对话选择什么语气什么内容都不会造成影响,玩家所做的其实和看书时的翻页没有什么区别。所以当作消遣还是可以的 。目前我的进度:第一幕结束,第二幕刚开始 (真玩不下去也别勉强了

ACT II

在第一幕的结尾,找到零号路之后,制作组随即动用想象力,在第二幕中让玩家在真实和不真实之间不停来回。在第二幕开始的办公楼,都是熊的楼层显得很突兀 (梦中才会出现这样的场景 ,但是在这一层没有任何互动,而玩家接下来又要和人进行正常的谈话。
总之, 现实在这里绝对派不上太大用场
第二幕的地图也不再是第一幕中的线条,代表着道路在土地上向四方延伸,而是没有方向,没有位置的空间,只有不停变化的诸如羽毛、水晶一类的符号,零号路就像漂浮在宇宙中 (你认为是符号在移动还是你在移动?你认为我们是在教堂外还是在教堂内呢? 。向接待员问路,得到的回答总是:沿着你来时的方向,当你看到水晶时,掉头 (就像无法告诉别人从地球到月球要怎么走,也无法说出月球在地球的哪个方位一样
第二幕中仍然完全依靠环境音效来营造氛围,只有在最后又用了一首乡村风格(大概 的背景音乐,其余的场景就和现实生活一样,办公楼中只有嘈杂,大雨倾盆电闪雷鸣的夜晚,背景就是雨滴打在屋顶上的声音。
制作组似乎有意向这游戏中加入各种特立独行的元素,当玩家习惯了为conway和shannon(我现在不敢说他们是不是主角了 选择下一句话要说什么时,在博物馆中,玩家控制的虽然仍是这两人,但是每次触发的对话,如果把两人比作罪犯,那么对话就是发生在警察和目击者之间的。如果是其他游戏,这么做应该是为了从另一个角度塑造角色 blablabla ,但是在肯塔基零号路中,经过一大段间接引语,玩家对角色的性格或是过往并没有知道的更多,制作组只是尝试了一种新的手法,而且还很成功。

If Franz Kafka watched too much Twin Peaks and had a drunken dream about it, this would be it.

My suggestion is to get the game on sale and enjoy the first 3 chapters. They are incredibly well done, a rare bit of gaming art. If the other two chapters ever come out, consider it a bonus.

Beautiful. Surreal. Mysterious. This is one of the kinds of games you can play after a long day of work to chill and ponder the meaning of life.

I am utterly in love with this game. Sure the episodes are short, and sure the wait between them is long, but playing this is like dreaming, and I just don't want to wake up.

This game really bums me out. There are so many things to like about it; the art, music, and atmosphere are all amazing. And the story is a wonderful surreal journey that you don't often find in games. It's really a shame that I wont recommend this game because it had such promise and I was looking forward to playing it before the first episode was even released.

But all that being said, the game is incomplete. You're always going to have to wait for the complete package in an episodic game, but after 2 years without news it seems like we wont ever be getting the rest of it. I played the game when episode 3 came out, and I can honestly say that I just don't care anymore. Even if episodes 4 and 5 eventually do come out, I probably wont bother playing at this point.

I fully recognize that this game is made by a really small development team and that these things take time, but whatever the reasons for the lack of updates, it doesn't change that the game has not not been added to in years. Charging $25 for 3/5 of a game without being up front about the fact that there's no schedule for the other episodes verges on deceptive at this point and no one should waste their time and money unless the full game is released.

If the game is ever completely I might consider going back and playing through the whole thing again, and will update my review accordingly, but for now it's barely more than half of a game that we probably wont ever see the end of, so there's no reason to play it.


Note: Regarding my play time, I actually played it quite a bit longer and completed episodes 1-3, but did so in offline mode so my time wasn't recorded.
