Reviews

“I came away from The Swapper with nothing but amazement. From the first time you see the literally hand-crafted visuals until the final moment in the game, which is sure to give you pause for thought, you will be in complete awe. Brilliant puzzles with even more brilliant solutions compliment the philosophical plotline, leaving an unforgettable experience unlike any other.”
10/10 – Destructoid

“The Swapper tempted me with ingenious puzzles, transported me to a fully realized science-fiction world, and made me ask questions about mortality and morality that few video games have ever dared to explore. Very few puzzle games have ever managed to marry impeccable challenges with a mature storytelling quite like this – there's no fluff or extraneous content here, only a prime example of how to create a tight, unforgettable gaming experience.”
9.3 – IGN

“It didn’t take me long to fall in love with The Swapper; it continuously surprised and impressed me from its intriguing first moments to its fantastic ending.”
9.25 – Game Informer

“The game’s level design is excellent at accentuating a core, the piece you’re nearly certain must be pivotal. It’s the particulars of arranging everything around that piece that force you into this state of constant iteration and experimentation. Think, rethink. Get stumped. Take a break. Go outside. Have some ice crea- wait, no. Pet a dog. Or maybe go for a stroll in the park, because that would- Oh god, now Swapper’s thought process has invaded your mind. You can’t escape.”

Whether you like puzzle games or not, you should give the swapper a try. It's wonderful. The game design gives you a weightless feeling thanks to its atmosphere. You really feel lonely in space if it was not for your clones. The graphics are great and the music is fantastic. Some puzzles are a bit hard but not impossible. And once you find the trick it's a genuine reward.

Decent indie puzzler, not an amazing find like Limbo or Braid, not as much variety as Fez, but still worth the asking price. Relatively short, but I didn't mind. Good for one playthrough.

Most people rave about the visuals assembled from digitized clay sculpture, but I found the amount of bloom and distortion effects applied to be mildly aggravating, like an almost unnoticed headache.

Replayability is nil unless you're an achievement completionist. There's a binary moral choice at the end which requires an entire replay just to see the alternative. No thanks, I'll just watch a replay.

the novelty of the swapper mechanic with its challenging puzzles makes up for its faults. The voice acting is good. The story is decent; not as profound as I imagine the creators hoped, but not preachy or pretentious. The music is nice and, if you're like most people who like the visuals, complements the atmosphere.

If you're into puzzles, this game is for you.
No agility needed (or at least I can't recall any part that needs it). Only pure logic.
No cross-correlating either, every puzzle is self sufficient and you don't need knowledge acquired somewhere else to solve it.

The story is interesting also, rather philosophical revolving around the "what is a thought?" question. Don't expect a masterpiece that will change the gaming industry in this sense, but it was cool

I just regret that the game was rather short, but I am not 100% sure that adding more content would be a good idea.

Gorgeously constructed sets teeming with atmosphere serve as playground to puzzles that are all-too-commonly frustrating for casual players. Like most indie puzzle platformers of its time, the Swapper's artsy image is tarnished by obtuseness and tedium, but what's there in spite of its flaws is still quite compelling.

When I first was recommended The Swapper, I was skeptical. My friend knows me fairly well, so it wasn't that I didn't think I would like it, but rather, it felt like an expensive game for what it sold itself as. A standard puzzle-platformer with a unique art style. Awesome.

But really, the game was much more. The craftsmanship and love are in the details of the atmosphere, from the minute textures on the models, to creepy sound design, to integration of the plot into the mechanics (discovering what The Swapper is).

Overall, I would justify a full-price purchase in support of the studio and wanting to see more games like this, though for most people the pure hours logged into this game may not justify the price at anything more than $5. As a mirror to the game itself, a lot is going to depend on your knowledge of "self" in whether this game is going to be a good purchase.

Didn't finish it yet, but amazing game.

Hard and challenging puzzles that give a very potent sense of satisfaction when you complete them.

Amazing story, makes you think, makes you link the chain of thought the game creates in your brain. I bought it for the story.

No downsides actually, one of the best indie games I have ever played and you cannot expect any more than this from an indie title. Many indie games serve the purpose of being a link between the developers and the players mind.
To illustrate the developers thoughts without getting them tainted. This game is one of the best examples of such indie games.

I found the game uniquely challenging with a couple different phases to keep things interesting. The ambiance is relaxing and there is enough story line to complement the completion of tasks. Great game, would recommend.

One of my favorite puzzle platformers so far (and I've played a lot). Everything is great: atmosphere, story, gameplay, sound, etc...

Puzzle-based games rarely offer the depth and atmosphere The Swapper provides. The game takes place in a beautifully realized science fiction setting; as you traverse an enormous yet desolate research station orbiting an alien world, you begin to piece together an understanding of the events which led it to such a state. However, with each bit of information about the past that you uncover, new questions about the present begin to appear.

Overall, The Swapper is a game that accomplishes a lot without overstaying its welcome. It's short enough (roughly 3 - 6 hours) that despite puzzle mechanics that are fairly limited in scope, it rarely feels repetitive, and it leaves you satisfied but wanting more. I'd highly recommend this game.

The Swapper is one of those indie games appeared in the last few years trying to bring something new to the game industry.
We're in front of a nice platform/puzzle sci-fi 2D game. The classic dynamics of platform games are substitued by a new idea: the main character has a "gun" able to create clones of the owner and to swap his/her willings and conscious to them. You create a clone (up to five at the same time) and can switch the control between them. Using this dynamic, your task will be to solve some interesting and quite tricky puzzles.

Thanks to the colors and the music, this game is able to create a very suggestive atmosphere and a nice, enjoyable storyline (even if sometimes can be hard to follow).

The 13.99 Euro (14.99 dollars) can be quite a lot for a 4/5 hours game, but I can only reccomend it. If you find it on sale, grab it immediately!

Im sure this game is probably a good one, but seeing that i cant even get it to run no matter what i do leads me to beleive that the game was just made poorly.
Every fix/suggestion i have found could not get it to work. I give up!

Yes its probably wrong to judge a game before i have even played it but i beleive the amount of time i have waited for some sort of fix is enough. Good game or not... it should be a seamless process, Yes bugs are to be expected on release but to ignore the fact that there are a good amount of people that cant run the game even until now is just unacceptable.

If i do manage to get it to run i still wouldnt change this review.

Crashes after each launch :( Can't even get to the menu. And yes, I've tried everything what can be found on forums. I'm not alone as I see it. It's recommended to check your specs / settings before buying this game.

I can't get this to run. It will show a loading bar and does finish, but then after this it will have a full blank screen with a small central 50 x 50mm section where you can see the mouse curser only. The community overlay function does work (Shift tab). This is all I get out the game.
computer is a 64bit dual core processer. 4GBRAM & HD4570 card.
Can graphics be changed to lowest setting somewhere. Any updates to fix it otherwise?

Stopped playing after about 1/2 hour. They slow time down when you're trying to aim while falling so that you can get off some unrealistic shots, like they couldn't decide if they wanted a simple "move" based puzzle game or something more analog and requiring coordination like Portal.

Featuring the deepest and most meaningful moral choice system ever, with hard choices to make like "do I kill myself, or do I kill an innocent bystander and endanger all of humanity for the sake of saving myself?" Deep.
