Anmeldelser

“I came away from The Swapper with nothing but amazement. From the first time you see the literally hand-crafted visuals until the final moment in the game, which is sure to give you pause for thought, you will be in complete awe.

Brilliant puzzles with even more brilliant solutions compliment the philosophical plotline, leaving an unforgettable experience unlike any other.”
10/10 – Destructoid

“The Swapper tempted me with ingenious puzzles, transported me to a fully realized science-fiction world, and made me ask questions about mortality and morality that few video games have ever dared to explore.

Very few puzzle games have ever managed to marry impeccable challenges with a mature storytelling quite like this – there's no fluff or extraneous content here, only a prime example of how to create a tight, unforgettable gaming experience.”
9.3 – IGN

“It didn’t take me long to fall in love with The Swapper; it continuously surprised and impressed me from its intriguing first moments to its fantastic ending.”

The player has a cloning and consciousness swapping tool, with which he has to overcome obstacles to collect orbs, which open door and teleports to access new areas of the map, and reveal more about the existential space SF story.
Personally, I found the mysterious story and clay model graphics very intruiging, but the puzzles just seemed like always the same thing returning with greater complexity.
Below, my first hour of gameplay, you can follow my thought process and practically see a light go up when I solve the first puzzles.

In a word: An undercooked story.

The Swapper is an atmospheric puzzle game with a partial focus on philosophy. I stress the word partial because I went into it expecting more by way of philosophy of mind and was left disappointed by its unwillingness to follow through with a number of themes it establishes early on. While the game’s central mechanic - the use of a gun to create clones - concerns the idea that the soul can endure different bodies, and the story concerns a race of advanced aliens who've transcended their bodies, the game clearly favours testing players with puzzles over getting them to ruminate over the story. The puzzles themselves are decent, unlike the atmosphere, which is genuinely great, as are are the claymation animations, which provide some splendid death scenes. About a year ago the writer, Tom Jubert, went explained why he didn’t think the writing integrated with the gameplay perfectly and having now finished the game, I completely agree with him. There’s a decent puzzle game in there and it's enjoyable enough but I think it bites off more than it can chew.

Recommended for people who like to think their minds and bodies are separate but really just wanna solve puzzles.

I've picked this up shortly after release, or so I think. I've played it on and off, mostly at lunch when I could. I changed jobs, no steam access then. Played it again very recently, and whilst I'm often stuck with puzzles that seem impossible at the time, I enjoy the atmosphere of the game so much that I keep coming back. Music is excellent, graphics are a beautiful mix between what seems to be diorama-style art and digital overlays. There is a general feeling of sadness, not fear or horror. It's just beautiful. Now if I could finally get passed those pesky puzzles!

Great game. Stunning visuals to break up the pace. Thought provoking puzzles. Music is nothing special, but the sound design (ie, the noises of the game) are well designed. If there was one complaint I'd have is that the game takes itself a little too seriously.

Meh.

Windowed mode wont let me move the stupet window and when switching from one window to another it decides to pouse the game by default... might aswell as just force me into fullscreen really.

Puzzles... the only thing that makes the "hard" puzzles (for which i only found 4 of them to be "hard") hard is really just precision, If you decided to put ur clone 0.0000001cm apart from that specific place you need to place him than the whole puzzle fails instead of the puzzles being hard to solve becouse of complex issues. And since it was only 4 of them for which i found that thing to be hard than if it didnt had that precise issue the game really would be frankly easy.

A great atmospheric game about cloning yourself to solve puzzles. The story is great and the difficulty is just right, not too easy, not too hard. The controls feels great and help you navigate through the various and hazardous environments.

The only downside: Reaching the endgame locks you out, preventing you to hunt for secret rooms and achievements. There is a good reason for that but a new game+ of sort would have helped.

Anyway, it really deserved its blue thumb. Try it out.

Thoroughly enjoyed The Swapper. You start off thinking the game is a Portal-esque puzzle game, but then you start to get a feel for the game's own character. And character the game has in spades. Completing challenging, but not soul crushing puzzles makes you feel clever. Following the story via the assorted logs and audio queues is fulfilling. You slowly figure out what is going on, and at the end you are left with a choice that feels like it has depth. I highly recommend this game.

Just wanted to add my vote to the pool, even if the reviews are already overwhelmingly positive - and deservedly so! The game is very unassuming at first - even more so by the screenshots - but once you're a bit into the story and mechanics, it's hard to put down. The puzzles are pretty clever and the story is quite interesting. And the ending... oh, the ending! Don't be surprised if you complete the game without getting a single achievement. They're not broken, they're just deviously designed. Easily recommended!

Totally exceeds all expectations. The overall aesthetic is dark and surreal, and there's a tilt-shift quality to the camera view that makes every level all the nicer to look at. Looks especially great on a big screen. Music and sound are also exceptional. Loved listening to the scale of notes that play as you scroll the main menu (try it with headphones). Conceptually, I haven't played a game this intriguing since Portal 2. Lots of range to the puzzle difficulty. Some of them had me totally stumped for days til I gave up and looked them up online. Figuring out new ways to utilize The Swapper and the other UI elements in the game was not the chore that it is in a lot of other games. Easy to set up on the new Steam Controller, though I preferred mouse & keyboard. The story didn't grab me at first because I just wanted to start making clones and pushing buttons, but by the halfway mark I was going back and reading every single computer log and memo. By the time it was over and I hadn't unlocked any of the Steam achivements, I realized the replayability factor this game has. Can't wait to give it a second run. Very well made,

I'm glad to see that more people have discovered this gem. Not only is this game beautiful, it actually offered some challenging puzzles. I'll be honest that there aren't that many game mechanics added to the game. You're pretty much doing the whole clone yourself thing, but it doesn't need much more than that. So if it doesn't click with you in the beginning then it may not just be for you. The story unfolds in these computer logs. My only complaint is that text can be hard to read at times. It runs fine on my macbook pro late 2013, but the fans blow HARD, more than many other games that I play.

The Swapper is an interesting platform game with a great story and clever puzzles.

All the ambience in the game is awesome, the level design, the voice over, the sounds and music... Everything works so well to create the loneliness feeling of being lost in space.

The puzzles must be solved using an cloning gun that can replicate you in some other part of the spaceship. It looks easy at first but it become challenging once you are in the final part of the game.

I won't say anything about the story here to spoil your experience. You must discover playing the game, it is worth it.

Go play it.

Ok I'm done,.................enough.

I really love it, the graphics, atmosphere and those little piano moments that just crush you inside with beauty.

But this game is really hard... I wanted to complete it but ended up using a guide, 5 times and sort of lost heart at my own failure.

I tried to hang on to the story and all the special little moments (piano) but the difficulty overpowers it all.

Still well worth it, for the beauty of it all. The story was getting really interesting but just lost heart. :(

This was Surprisingly a hard and interesting game to play.
Finally finished it.
The Swapper is a Puzzle Platformer that uses some interesting mechanics for solving them, Using clones of oneself.
The game certainly did peak my interest at certain points to know more about the origin story, giving peaks and teasers as you solve the puzzle and obtain Encryption orbs. We need to collect a certain amount of Encryption orbs to get past each section of the game. Saying more would spoil the game.. :)

Pros:
+Graphics-Stunning
+Atmosphere- Alone in space?...yeah this got it right.
+Puzzles and Level design (some took me more than an hour)
+Writing- for all you intellectual minds :D
+Gameplay mechanics
+BGMs- Defintely complimented the game
+Difficulty - No Hand holding or puzzle solving cheats. Makes you think HARD(which can hurt some people). :D

Cons:
- The Achievements: THEY SHOULD HAVE NAMED IT SUPER SECRETS.YOU CANNOT GET ALL OF THEM WITHOUT A GUIDE.

I bought in a sale, never expected to invest so many hours into it.
Definitely Recommend this Game.
Rarely does a game challenge the aspects of self realisation.

The Swapper is a side-scrolling puzzle platformer in which you solve puzzles by making clones of yourself. The game has you stranded on a spacestation. Within the game there are many rooms to explore, collecting orbs as you do so. These orbs help you get further in the game. Not that original but it works.

To collect the orbs you have to swap to the clone that is going to be in contact with the orbs. All the clones follow the same movement commands as the main clone. The puzzles mostly consist of rooms where there are special lights where you are unable to spawn a clone, swap to a clone or both. This may sound like a small thing, but the developers really thought about the many ways to use this.

From my experience with the puzzles, some are done in the first try others can take a while.
Often you will find out you just had to do one small trick to progress. The puzzle difficulty gets harder as you go, sometimes with large steps of difficulty. The last levels were really hard (But that could be down to me having a break from the game for a while).

The atmosphere of the game is really well done with the level design, story and sound design all contributing. What made the level design nice was that the whole world was made by using clay and other real objects as background. The world had a nice metroid feel, because you could explore many parts of the world. The only sad thing that later in the game it more felt like going from puzzle room through puzzle room. Happily enough you don't have to solve the puzzles in chronological order even though you still have to finish them all to go to the next area. The only complaint I can give is that some rooms looked the same, due to the dark look. But I guess that also does help with the lost spacestation feel.

The story is mostly told through cutscenes and optional reading messages. What is nice about the story is that it asks philosophical questions to make you think. One thing that can be annoying is that there are rocks in the game that when you pass them, your screen gets blurry and text will pop up. This is okay the first time, but becomes annoying after a while, especially if you have to pass by the same rock several times. Another thing I found annoying was that some cutscenes aren't skippable so you have to watch them again should you die.

The game took me around 8 hours to complete and the last critical thing I have to say is that there is not much replay value once completed. There are multiple endings, but no reason to play the game all over again except if you wish to. You may be better off just watching the other ending on youtube. The achievements are pretty unfair in the game. I collected them in my first playthrough using a guide and I often thought 'How could anybody find this!?'

There are maybe parts that I am critical about, but they don't hold up in the end with the total experience you get.

Beautiful game. The visuals are all handmade clay models, with gorgeous lighting effects. The Swapper itself is a great enabler for the puzzles found in the game, and it's a mechanic that allows for tons of unique gameplay that also ties perfectly into the narrative being told.

If you want a good, short, puzzle game, this is the game for you.
You have a gun that can make clones, and the clones move how you do. You can swap to them. That's basically the take away for the puzzle aspect.
The game is really short, you can easily beat it in one sitting. The story is simple, but interesting. It brings up some interesting questions about cloning as well.
Definitely worth the money.

I'll say I got this game in a humble bundle a while back. It had just been sitting in my library the whole time without me ever realizing what this game was. After I had finished one game in my library, I had stumbled across this title. It peaked my curiousity and I gave it a shot. I am so glad I did, because this game is fantastic! The puzzle mechanics work so well. You will get to a point where you think you can solve just about any puzzle they can throw at you and then they give you one that genuinely forces you to think about how you approach it. The atmosphere is wonderful. I love the clay animation style they went with and the empty feeling of the world that the audio provides. This game is solid and if you are a fan of puzzles in general, I would highly reccommed this game!

REVIEW
The Swapper is an enjoyable 2D puzzle-platformer that lacks gameplay innovation but rises above the crowd on the shoulders of its superbly well-designed atmosphere and provocative narrative. The actual puzzle-solving aspect of the game is adequate, but with minimal diversity and accretion. It is definitely a story-driven experience, with the gameplay taking a passenger seat. If you can appreciate a game in that style, this is a good bet for you.

The entrancing narrative and the style in which it transpires work in concert with the mystifying ambiance to create a wondrous experience. The story touches on some thought-provoking metaphysical issues, while skillfully avoiding a fall too deep into the rabbit hole to keep the average person’s interest. Much of the rest of the narrative is comfortable, cliché sci-fi tropes that we all know and love.

The gameplay and the puzzles are far from bad, but they also are nothing special. As I alluded to: they are sufficient, but fail to develop into anything overly interesting. Very little changes from the first puzzle to the last, so it does get a little bit dry. That said, some of the later ones are quite tricky and a few require not only puzzle-solving ability but also decent reflexes.

The graphics are pleasurable and align perfectly with the vibe of the game. But the whole soundscape is what truly brings the atmosphere of The Swapper to life. The ambient soundtrack, the cryptic chatter, and the selectively placed voice-overs contribute a wonderful blend of emotions and mystery. If you are into it, this is a game you might enjoy with the lights off and your headphones on (or however else you may get into the zone).

The Swapper is a brief, interesting, and enjoyable experience. It is not a complex or intricate puzzle-platformer, but I recommend it to any fan of the genre who would appreciate the atmosphere and narrative.
