Dark Whisper

8 Juni 2014

Dark Whisper will include:

  • Level Cap Expansion from Master Level 20 to Master Level 30
  • Two New Field Maps (Lower Dark Whisper and Upper Dark Whisper) with new monsters and bosses
  • New Items
  • New Craftable Gear and Weapons
  • Dayr Desert Monster DNA and Cards

It is known that the Curse of Osiris gave rise to the Fortress of Despair. Though the Day of Despair came to an end, and Dark Whisper joined the Defeated Freyja in Vanaheim, dimensional cracks appeared throughout Ashkaron and woke the dark power.

With the fall of Ashkaron, Dark Whisper's owner, Valkyrie Himmelmez, captured the remnants of the Ashkaron Empire easily. This victory came with a heavy cost, as the dimensional cracks weakened and Dark Whisper's power ebbed. In order to hold what she had, Himmelmez went into hibernation, collecting power for the day she might have the strength to awaken once more.

Several years have passed since these events transpired, and with the summoning of the dimensional cracks throughout Rune-Midgarts by Freyja, Vanaheim's power has returned. While there was not enough power to summon the Valkyries, the use of Saintess Aione's power to seal these dimensional cracks revealed to the awakened Himmelmez that Randgris's power lays inside the Saintess.

"Now is the time.."

Valkyrie Himmelmez stirs, her dark power felt throughout the land, and she is swiftly regaining more power as she absorbs the strength of Valkyrie Randgris from Saintess Aione.

Set-up

Valkyrie Himmelmez has built huge fortresses with the purpose of researching dark magic. The lower level is filled with her failed monstrous experiments. The upper level contains her successes, monsters with the strength to act as Valkyrie Himmelmez's bodyguards. It should be noted that while these monsters have greater strength, their weakness lies in a lack of focus, as their attention has turned on monster collection rather than protecting their maker.

Introduction

The Dark Whisper Upper and Lower hunting fields are for Master Level 20+ players. You can enjoy the hunting fields with Dayr Desert and Osiris gears, but prepare to battle Valkyrie Himmelmez with new and powerul weapons.

Bosses

Parent Basilisk

Basilisk lives in the Ashkaron subterranean cave which causes him to have terrible eyesight. However, his sense of smell is exceptional, and his hearing is parallel to none. After the Ashkaron castle collapsed, Himmelmez found this monster and made a nest for him on the lower level

Trainer Kurolf

Kurolf is the older twin brother of Himmelmez’s subordinate Gustaf. He is much stronger than Gustaf, but he is also very lazy and dumb. There was one time when he was asked to train Rackufs on Himmelmez’s orders. By the end of the training, all the Rackufs were dead. He is still training Rackufs, but now he is working hard not to make the same mistake twice.

Queen Arwen

Arwen is a half human, half arachnid monster created by Himmelmez. Due to Arwen’s low intelligence and battle ability, Himmelmez threw her away. Regardless, she is still one of the cruelest queen spiders around.

Supervisor Gustaf

Gustaf is Kurolf’s younger twin brother who trains laborers. While smarter than his brother, he is just as cruel. Don’t compare him to his brother though or he may get offended.

Armdieras

The great grand masters decaying corpses combine to create the gruesome Armdieras. There is a core that controls him, manipulated by Himmelmez which gives this monstrosity the power to move. This core resides within the twisted flesh of this monsters body.

Chef Gurush

Gurush was once a chef in Ashkaron, but he was killed in his kitchen when Ashkaron collapsed. Fortunately, Himmelmez revived him. However, those who wished to eat his food again are out of luck, because his cooking abilities are completely gone. He is now just a greedy monster.

Bijou the Witch

When Bijou was alive, she helped Himmelmez in her twisted research. However, when the Day of Despair came, Bijou was killed in battle. Himmelmez, feeling pity for her former ally, and not wanting to lose a valuable resource, gave her life again. To ensure her death would not be revisited, Himmelmez gifted her with huge arms of killing force, so that Bijou might protect herself should the need arise again.

How to get to Dark Whisper

The entrance will be located in Morroc City, next to the Tomb of Osiris entrance.

take a medeocre mmorpg, wipe on a glossy layer of old school nostalgia, but fail to actually manage to replecate anything that was appealing from the first game

As you can tell, I've put a fairly large amount of time into RO2. When I first started playing, it was brilliant, and I had a lot of fun. I thought the community was okay, and helped start a guild. Then I realized something - with each subsequent patch, they would break the game, then you would have to wait another month for a new patch to fix the problems, and then it would introduce new ones.

This came to a head after I spent money to support the game (I did love it, and I rarely do this with free to play games) and two days later the new patch came out - That entire month was spent with the game being unplayable. The game doesn't even require a high-end system to play, and I have a fairly high-end system that couldn't handle it after the stupid patch! Wasted money, entirely.

There are redeeming features - cute stylized graphics and fun gameplay, I didn't feel that the character clases were unbalanced as others have said, I think it IS highly taylored to your personal playstyle and like most in-depth MMO's, reading guides will help.

When they decided to switch leveling models at level 50 is when I really stopped enjoying the game altogether. Up to that point, it was great, it was challenging, and it was fun to play. Suddenly, getting to level 50 was something you could do in about 16 hours of gameplay and then every time you died your previous experience would get erased to a degree, causing you to have to grind and grind and grind to get back where you were - to die again. The auction house reflected this with better equipment when reasonably priced equipment became extremely expensive, when it was nearly impossible to sell anything made with the crafting skill you have to develop, and with ridiculous things that you an pretty much only buy for insane amounts of zeny (in game money) or real life money, which quickly gets sucked dry because they do useful things by day, not by number of hours, and you can get part of it for free simply by logging in every day.

What are they thinking?

I stopped playing after the expansion was released and I had several characters up to level 50, it just became a chore to deal with everything. When a game stops being fun, it's time to stop playing and move on.

That being said, you an tell easily that I've put many hours into this game - more than most, less than some. If you're going to play it, prepare for one of the most shameless pay-to-win models you've ever seen. You'll get tired of it quickly, whereas if you had been playing it last year, you'd be having a blast. They won't be getting anymore of my money, and I won't ever get the month of gametime I lost after they broke the game.

In good conscience, I have to advise against playing it. At this point, just stay away, there are other better alternatives with less invasive pay to win models in existence. However, it's worth playing a little bit just to see the pretty world, if you're into graphics that don't require a lot to look very cute.

5/10. Visually high on the list, but after what they pulled on everyone who played it heavily, especially people who thought it was good enough to pay for and then yanking the rug out from underneath of them, they lost any support I would give them. Again, give it a shot, maybe I'm just bitter because I started playing it before they decided to ruin it, but new players may find something to enjoy here.

TL,DR version : (Sorry Gravity for this review, but I am still a fan of the original and believe you can still make a comeback)
Very generic. I want to say "not as good as it should be" but instead I find myself saying "Not good or fun at all." I give a lot of chances especially to something I want to be good, this took 3 mind numbing chances after waiting a while for the bugs to be worked out first. Give it a try of course, but don't expect much at all.

Long Version :
Running back and forth between 2 characters over 6 times before killing or collecting an item is downright boring as hell. I have played Ragnarok Online the original and it was/is much better than playing Ragnarok Online 2. The game went 3D and lost all value in community and leveling gain. After multiple times of scrapping and redoing the game it should have been much better than this.

Time should have gone to giving Ragnarok Online 1 a huge update or cloning the game with a different storyline. This was awful and I cant play anymore than the 8 hours I have pushing myself to like it. Sorry Gravity but you value your profits too much for this game to be any good.

Anime cut-scenes were interesting. New card system is not as inspiring. Music loops so much it may have made me nauseous, Running up and down a hill shows obvious bugs that should have been fixed in Korean Beta, none of my costumes fit me (hat was floating 4 feet aboive my ehad at all times) All of the items are timed. Peco usage for 3 days. VIP access was generous but pointless, the people are NOT fun to play/talk with (original has that locked down better than any game)

I would totally skip this game... it has somewhat the nostalgia factor if you played the first ragnarok but it has nothing to offer beyond that... there are several better games (and with a better comunity) than this.

PLUSES:

Catchy Anime Graphics
Oh so cute Anime Girls
Free-to-Play
Low Learning Curve
Interesting Variety of Collectables
Advertisements for the "KAFTRA" Shop arent too bad... really...
Low Violence and Little in the way of Adult Content ( That i have seen anyway )

MINUSES:

Mostly Horribly Underpopulated Servers
Terrible, Terrible English Translations... ( "All your bases are belong to us" x2! )
Undersupportive Community ( Beginning to think the GM's, like the users, are a Myth... )
Collectable pets involve hours if not DAYS of collecting "DNA Fragments" to combine
Constant server anouncements everytime someone wins a prize or "refines" a cool item
Server anouncements are IN BOLD, ACROSS THE CENTER OF THE SCREEN, and there is NO WAY to turn them OFF
Uninspired Plot/Story
Low Level Cap ( 50 i think )
Ran into some "Game Killing Glitched Missions" on my first day (They have since been repaired, but still, bad form)
"Personal Shops" are a neat idea but are absolutely obsoleted by the Auction House

OVERALL: 3 out of 10. ( A big waste of time )

A cute game with a lot of wasted potential. I think it is pretty clear that the "English" servers are not a priority here ( Reading the constantly poor translations actually gives me a migrane after a while ). It actually would probably not be a bad MMO for younger kids to get involved in as the "MOBS" are all really cutsy and there is not much in the way of blood or realistic violence, so far as i have seen. To be fair, i did only go as far as level 20, but i figure: if the game is universally boring in the first 20 out of 50 levels, why should i think that the other 30 will be any different?
