I own the original shareware release disc, also own another compilitation boxed release but had a fiver sitting in my steam wallet so figured eh why not lets buy it again here.
Now for a really goodtime get some friends on a server, load up a level with some water and then grab the lightning gun and have a pool party. Take it a step further and install 3wave CTF and go for the BM+quad combo and really see how fast people get gibbed. Goodtimes, goodtimes, remembering the joys of hearing that sound and running your ♥♥♥ off in the other direction until the timer on it expired. Then while you're at it get the original TF mod also, maybe throw in some Future vs Fantasy for a real good time since the 4 runes from 3WCTF just weren't enough.

Sadly now now in 2016 you can't really enjoy the joys of this original release while playing on the net with a server of hpb and lpbs' mixed together with the original netcode. 300/200ping vs some sub 100/50/20's oh hell yeah those were good times indeed. Ugly by todays game standards yet who cares as it was/is fun to play still.

Buy this game and install the Quake Epsilon Mod if you want it to look like it was made in 2011.

If you want a more OG feel with just a smoother experience and widescreen support, which is what I prefer, hook yourself up with Quakespasm. Regardless of what you do, buy this game.

Quake * 7/10

A game that represented a historical turning point for gaming.

Quake is an FPS from iD software that followed Doom II. Its importance is mostly due to the technical evolution at the time of its release. Available both in software renderer and OpenGL renderer it allowed real 3d environments, items and enemies, advanced architecture (overlying floors, floating lifts, moving surfaces or floors...). Nowadays we take this for granted but for the time it was a real revolution especially the GL version that allowed a smoother graphic and a superior performance.

Nowadays Quake's engine looks pretty old, with very low polys models and undefined blurry textures. Yet even nowadays there are many ports available with texture packs, improved renders and effects that allow to play this old classic with a 16:9 high resolution giving a great (and resource demanding) aesthetic experience, even though the game is over 20 years old.

I wasn't forced to use those ports as the game luckily runs both with software and OpenGL render On my machine but the graphics is so old that I had to use an updated port to play (Personally I've used Darkplaces, you can see pictures in my galleries).

Music score was composed by Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails and is made of environmental and instrumental quite heavy tracks. Unfortunately once again there's no soundtrack available in this steam release for no logical reason, luckily with ports and updates there are also packages available in the web that includes the full soundtrack for both the game and the expansions.

Story is almost inexistent as in most old iD games, it's more like a context: You are a soldier or better, Ranger that has to save the earth from an alien, codename Quake, and his army that moves to places with portals named "Slipgates".

What's more important then the story is the game's art, heavily inspired by medieval themes, so you will be exploring many locations with typical elements such as rose windows, mosaics, churches, castles, libraries, drawbridges. Even some enemies are knights with swords. Still this is an FPS so you have shotguns, chainguns (converted to nailguns, who knows why), rocket launchers and there are also enemies with chainguns, grenade launchers, ghosts, zombies, so this is not an accurate medieval reproduction but mostly just an artistic choice.

+++PROs+++
  • FPS. This is the good old classic frantic FPS, with loads of enemies, weapons, secrets and more. Just run and shoot everything that moves and go ahead. Simple and fun.
---CONs---
  • OLD. Quake is 20 years old as I'm writing and its age is really a visible issue. Even in GL Render models have a really low polycount and textures are barely detailed, not to mention the lack of mouselook support or 16:9 display compatibility. Luckily there are updated ports that can MASSIVELY improve the experience with new effects, lighting, textures pack, and new models (I've used Darkplaces, you can see pictures in my galleries).
  • STEAM RELEASE. Even though there are no relevant compatibility issues, once again there's no music in this release (Same problem as in Quake 2). Luckily there are patches that bring it back both in Vanilla and Any other port release.

I played this game on this machine:
Laptop Lenovo Z50
Intel Core i5-4210U
8Gb RAM DDR3
GeForce 840M/Intel HD Graphics 4400
Windows 10 Home x64

This is the epitome of classic first-person shooters. My second favorite in the first-person shooter genre, but nothing will ever top the Half-Life series. With suffering from one problem, no music during gameplay. Maybe because of licensing issues. I'll call this one "SilentQuake". Some like it that way, mainly because people think it's creepier that way. Before Quake, First-person shooters especially Star Wars: Dark Forces were referred to as "Doom clones", despite that game being made on Lucasarts' Jedi engine.

This is an excellent game but this package is atrocious. No included soundtrack robs Quake of one of its most timeless assets.
