One thing I will say. It is a pity that today's schoolchildren can not feel the that atmosphere that we back in '96 ... The Quake played all who could poke keys on the keyboard. So that!

Steam upset me just a little when they didnt include the CD Audio in any format or even the possibility of a client that supports it, however the forums were helpful enough to assist me in getting the CDAudio ripped from my original CD and the DARKPLACES client that would play them.

A game that isn't what it was originally intended to be and nearly tore id Software apart. Quake shook the world when it was released in June of 1996 and was the first step into the then new realm of three dimensional polygon based, texture mapped levels and objects. The first game is still a far cry from the series rather quick change in themes (Quake 2 not even being intended to be a Quake sequel, but its own game though id couldn't secure the name they wanted). In terms of gameplay though it is the standard affair with shooters of its time.

What might have been considered generic at the time really is timeless, it very much plays like Doom and if you didn't like Doom well Quake is going to do nothing to win you over. Doom improved on Wolfenstein 3D's level design in every conceivable way and id learned a lot and from the games and Quake improves on level design even more. Despite not even having a map on hand, it is harder to get lost in Quake's levels compared to Doom's levels. This is a without a doubt refined level design with more signs of progress and far less backtracking. However Quake places a bigger emphasis on puzzles in maps rather than Doom's action packed slaughterfest maps. Of course in typical id Software fashion (for the time) also sporting many nifty tricks and traps along the way.

The weapons featured here aren't really too special, but it is how they all work in with design that makes them work so well. Shotguns, Rocket Launchers, Nailgun (yes it shoots nails, but still behaves like a Machine Gun), etc. I cannot stress enough how amazing the sound design is for the game as as a whole. The weapons sounding very powerful and impactful, the sounds when picking up items are very nice and who could ever forget the sound effect when they first picked up the Quad Damage powerup. All of the sound effects and the outright phenominal soundtrack all done by Nine Inch Nails' very own Trent Reznor. Also on a more personal note I would like to thank Quake and Reznor's work for getting me interested and eventually turning me into a massive NIN fan.

It is hard to speak about Quake and not mention the multiplayer it had. Though I played much more of Quake 3 than Quake's multiplayer it is still a blast to play if you can get people to play a good game of Deathmatch. It is pure skill DM, easy to learn, but hard to master. I also find it very fun getting a partner in to play the coop of the campaign.

Now what is wrong with Quake? Well nothing is really wrong, if anything this Steam version is a nuisance and requires additional work to work properly. I don't know how anybody could play Quake without the soundtrack and this requires a download because of the fact the music came from the CD. It is best played setup with a source port in which I would recommend getting one called Darkplaces with some great mods supporting it and so many visual options.

Still Quake is a solid masterpiece of First Person Shooters that is still fun and enjoyable to this day. Even though more followed I think of this to be the best in the series. Quake might not have lived up to Doom's expectations and might not be what it was intended to be, but the impact it had on PC gaming is unquestionably huge.

Best $3 I have ever spent on Steam hands down. Grew up playing DOOM I & II, so this game was a welcome refresher. Never played Quake before so its been great playing through all the cool map packs available. To express my opinion, FPS level design has regressed quite a bit when you compare it to what Quake offers.

To avoid playing this game would be an incredible disservice only to yourself.

Growing up and having this game in my childhood made growing up amazing. I have been a huge fan since day one and I still to this day play this on a regular.

Quake has came along way. If you have never tried this, or these games, download them.

Hell of a way to pass time.

I own the original shareware release disc, also own another compilitation boxed release but had a fiver sitting in my steam wallet so figured eh why not lets buy it again here.
Now for a really goodtime get some friends on a server, load up a level with some water and then grab the lightning gun and have a pool party. Take it a step further and install 3wave CTF and go for the BM+quad combo and really see how fast people get gibbed. Goodtimes, goodtimes, remembering the joys of hearing that sound and running your ♥♥♥ off in the other direction until the timer on it expired. Then while you're at it get the original TF mod also, maybe throw in some Future vs Fantasy for a real good time since the 4 runes from 3WCTF just weren't enough.

Sadly now now in 2016 you can't really enjoy the joys of this original release while playing on the net with a server of hpb and lpbs' mixed together with the original netcode. 300/200ping vs some sub 100/50/20's oh hell yeah those were good times indeed. Ugly by todays game standards yet who cares as it was/is fun to play still.
