It takes a while to get used to the interface, because things are layered multiple levels deep. But once you figure out that you can split windows, use tabs or open multiple windows it starts to shine: Have a high level overview of the plot while looking at your character notes, or drill down into your flow and flesh out the details, always while able to easily refer to the notes you made about characters, locations, etc.

This isn't a brainstorming tool per-se, it is a powerful tool that the story people use in actual game development, which is where the export capabilities come in handy - the Excel and XML exports have come in really handy for futher processing.

The pricing is a bit confusing, because this is basically a $299 product split into 3 $99 products (articy draft 1.0, upgrade to 2.x, and a commercial license) but at the same time it means you can start using it for $99 and only spend the extra money if you actually need a commercial license, or if you want the 2.x feature set.

If you're just looking for a tool to draft out a story, there are cheaper alternatives, but if you want to keep track of elaborate plots (think RPGs or Make-your-own-adventure books, or stuff like A Song of Ice and Fire with the many intertwining plot lines) or keep ALL material of your universe (Characters, Stories, Locations, Random Notes, Images,...) together, the software is worth a close look.

As a potential downside, there is only one "flow", so if you're still figuring out your story and have a few scenes that aren't connected, you can't have a "Scrapbook" flow but need to find space in the main flow. The Journey feature might come in at least a little bit handy for that.

Absolutely amazing software. I cannot comment on the SE version, as I have SE2. From what other people are saying, if you are really serious about requiring a very in-depth 'story-boarding' software with a whole host of additional features that can be utilised far beyond just games and stories, then get the upgrade; it will be invaluable.

Its versatility as a 'story-boarding' software is seemingly unlimited. I use this to write reports, plot stories, create a game before it has been made, create programming process trees (OOP), conduct and evaluate research, plan complicated sequences of componants for woodwork/metalwork/and the like, and the list goes on. Resource management at its finest!

It's an easily accessable professional software that has a pleasing GUI, Articy:SE 2 removes the need for 3-4-5+ drab looking "functional" software, and combines them into something that is pleasing on the eye and a pleasure to work within.

Great software. As you can see by my usage time I rely on it quite heavily, but I am not a designer or writer - I am software developer and I use it from that perspective. This is a software based on a very simple concept - to represent data in visual form. This can be skills tree, game story, location guidelines for artists, assortment of relations between narrative, everything. Game design and story design is major scope of this tool, but I use it in quite different manner:
1)It is good milestones organizer. You have development plan? Make it in Flow while attaching some guidelines for team. Make screenshots of each step to display. Nice and clean. Much better than generic issue tracking solutions as those don't track relations and have no associations. I wonder how this can be optimized by using multi-user version.
2)Need to understand your client? Easy enough - give him articy:draft and he will express his desires in neat standartized form using flow, location editor or even feature editor if he needs interface(that way client can properly describe data relations).
3)Writing short story? Well... Actually it is designed for it. Contains everything you will ever need especially with new document editor with links'n'stuff.
4)Designers don't want to touch you monstrous tools and abstractions? Well, articy:draft supports xml export out of the box. If you are coding in C# you will just make an export job into easy task with LINQ to parse data and get out safely without angering designers inner demons.

Problems: most of the problems reside in the version 1. Version 2 seems to be more performant with large amount of stuff on screen and doesn't freak out when multiple articy windows are opened(which annoyed me like hell before), but presentation tools are, well, "boring". There is no indication of dynamic and user responce. It is much easier to traverse flow using manual control in its editor instead. That way it will present relations and references with ability to go check those on demand while presenting. That is the only uncomfortable part of articy for me.

Recommended for every type of developer and any case.

Okay so I have used this program for a while now and I can say its superb. I use it for developing my games and for writing my novel and it does pretty much everything I want. Its excelent at helping to plan out whatever you are doing. You can start anywhere within the program (personaly I start by writing notes in the documents section) and create entities like characters, weapons, places, ships or anything else you consider of importance and needs lots of info thats all about that one thing. Then you can create a location using a combination of photoshop and in app elements you can create a rough or detailed idea of how a level or environment will look. It can even be used to plan out menues and the such which is very usefull for swift ideas that you just want to have down for later refinement. The Flows section is where it becomes interesting. When you are writing a series of conversations or speach choices, this is where this program excells, you can create a simple question with many possible answers and each answer can take you to a different responce or a single one, its up to you.

The possibilities that you have within this program are limited by your imagination and design abilities. I would recomend attempting to use stock images or temp images as much as possible it helps to bring each part to life and when you can see your characters it helps the creative juices to flow.(this program does NOT create images but uses ones you already have)

So in round up, if you are looking for a planning program to help keep all your ideas and thoughts in one organised and easy to navigate location then this is what you want. Its not cheap but if you are serious about writing or developing then I would highly recomened the financial output and get this program. If you are just messing around and want to create a small game and are creating it of the top of your head or with a small amount of notes then there is little point spending the money.

p.s. This is based on using v2. V1 has many of the features that v2 has however its text abilities are considerably reduced, so I would always recomend going for V2
