“La Mulana delivers on a fun, challenging and rewarding exploration experience that is presented with polish.”
Greenlit Gaming

"Beyond the seemingly insurmountable wall of challenge, La-Mulana is a brilliant title that exceeds in just about every category. Art, music, breadth of content, game length -- La-Mulana gets the highest marks. But there's simply no denying that the difficulty, as fair as Nigoro purports it to be, is a major deterrent. If you are willing to suffer, though, you will be blown away. I guarantee it."
8/10 – Destructoid

"Nigoro’s La-Mulana is like Castlevania: Symphony of The Night spliced with Dark Souls. It is long, it is tough, it is involved and it has puzzles that’ll make your brain bleed."
93/100 – Indie Game Mag

"I look back on my time with La-Mulana with plenty of frustration at the challenging platforming, enemies, bosses, and puzzles. But I’m also amazed at the time, thought, and talent that went into creating this experience. There may never be another game like La-Mulana."
8.5/10 – Game Informer

Will you fall prey to deadly traps or unravel the secrets of LA-MULANA?

LA-MULANA is an “Archaeological Ruin Exploration Action Game” in which you search inside ancient ruins, seeking out the “Secret Treasure of Life” – which sleeps in the sprawling ruins of “LA-MULANA” and is said to be the beginning of all civilization. Apart from the plethora of traps lying in wait to stop intruders, there are also monsters on the prowl, protecting the ruins. Head for the innermost depths of the ruins while solving a variety of mysteries, fending off monsters, and disarming traps.
Forging ahead will be no simple task – the further into the depths you reach, the more difficult the mysteries become.

The first run of NIGORO games. Created back in the creators’ “amateur” days and renowned worldwide, it was remade for WiiWare. This is the PC port version.
This game, which originated from the creators’ wish to play the sort of games that enthralled them back in the day – only with more volume – was created based on “that old-time feeling”. The operability and difficulty level are certainly not “new school”. However, this game is highly recommended to gamers seeking out that feeling of total immersion that allows you to go full-on head-to-head with a game not found in somewhat lighter fare.

Please consider this game to be our challenge to you.

Play through the entire game till your fingers bleed, give up and throw it out the window, or get help from strategy guides. The choice is yours.

'Be sure to play through, or clear in hard mode, or give up.'

--excerpt from La-Mulana manual

This is in a nutshell what the devs think about this game and about you, the player. They don't care if you give up or dislike their game. They made their piece of art and it's up for grabs. Take it if you can stomach it.
Game is hardcore and doesn't hide it's true nature in any way. Game even tricks the player to activate HARD MODE if players behave 'business as usual' and ignore warnings and instructions. Many times the game anticipates the reactions of players and taunts you accordingly.

As for me i seriously doubt i will ever complete this game. i have beaten just 2 guardians and even then it was tough as nails and paid a heavy price for it which might just mean i won't be doing so well with later bosses. (revolver ammo is life)

Game is a very JPN thing even though protagonist looks and behaves like Indiana Jones. Punishing game play, punishing bosses show you that this is no cake-walk modern gamers are used to. And do you really think you are a good puzzle solver? this game will put you to the test. better bring your pen and paper as some notes are just so cryptic and they are all important in some way or other. In this level or the one next to this one.

Oh, this has been a LONG time coming!

The graphics are VERY well done! Very detailed and clorful, but also fitting for each area. The animations for the sprites, espcecially the bosses, are very detailed and nice. There is nothing bad looking in this game at all! It's espeicaly nice to look at Tiamat.

The music is very enjoyable and fun to listen to. From the first ruin to the final boss's theme, all of it is great! I even have a few of the songs on my computer for listening now and then! I would love to have a limited edition soundtrack of this game!

Here is where I have problems. If you think Lemeza will control like every other platforming hero, you are DEAD wrong. Lemeza is one floaty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥! When you jump through the air, he flies like he has the momentum of a rocket (which makes pixel perfect jumping VERY hard), which is weird because if you just step off places, he falls LITERALLY like a rock! No control. Straight down. Pretty much ever other platforming game has a charter that can move a bit while falling, but not Lemeza. It's almost like he has dark matter in his pants! But when he swims, he takes so much button mashing to swim around, and when he is at the top of the water, if he has ANY kind of momentum, he bounces along like a stone skipping a pond!

Also, don't expect perfect twitch movement, as any flick of the control stick (Yes, thankfully this game has controller support), and he spins to the OPPOSITE direction of where you need him to face! Then you have the issue of Lemeza getting kicked back VERY hard when damaged and losing control of him until he hits solid ground. This makes it very difficult in certain areas where there are many enemies and jumps. There are even times where getting damaged kicks you into a spot where you are stuck in a perpetual fall, thus being unable to move and have to resort to teleporting away to fix it! Lemeza is literally the WORST platforming hero ever!

This is where I HATE the game. The game's puzzles rely on you just wandering around, trying random crap to solve puzzles SOMEWHERE in the entirty of the ruins! You will literally solve a puzzle that will unlock a chest or door ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE RUINS! And many of the answers are so obscure that I ACTUALLY REQUIRED A WALKTHROUGH! You will have to worry about scanning everything to learn the language, and smacking every wall for secret paths, even in places you'd never even think there would be a wall! You all have to worry about having certain program combinations to power up weapons or unlock abilties which wouldn't be so bad, IF THE PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS ACTUALLY TOLD YOU! Instead, they are game descriptions, forcing you to test combos through trail and error.

But the most annoying is the bosses. Almost all the bosses have a set pattern to learn before you can win. A pattern that will kill you. Over. And over. And over. And gods help you is you screw up as most bosses will give you no quarter. I have played hard games before, but DAYUM! Then you have the final boss,.. I died the least to the final boss, who has the most obvious patterns and can even be cheesed with sub weapons! I kill the boss's final form with the axe and pistol! , making it literally the easiest boss!

So... I have this to say. I will admit this is a well made game, but I HATE it. This is NIGORO's pride and joy, but I DESPISE it! If you like difficult and unforgiving platformers, then you will ADORE this game. But if you're like me and get frustrated easily, AVOID THIS GAME!

This game will rip your soul out of your body, stomp on it, do digusting, vile, horrible things to it, hang it by it's toe nails, use it as a boxing bag, drop it into a grinder, throw the remnants into a bowl, mix with ghost peppers and wasabi, tossed into an oven with liver, cooked at 500 degrees for 20-40 hours, then pulled out, drowned in horseradish sauce and then shoved up the ♥♥♥♥ of your body, give you the middle finger and runs away with your self respect like it's a cheap ho.

So, ummm... that's a no. It's a well made game. But.. just.... no.

Not necessarily my particular cup of tea, but a friend recommended I try this game, and I have to say that this is one of the hardest yet addictive games I have ever played. So with it being on sale this week, I wanted to say that this one is worth every penny.

It's a platform adventure game where you are exploring the ruins of La Mulana, and basically starts you off with very little. So there is a very high learning curve ---- but if you take your time and look around at everything very carefully the secrets will reveal themselves so that you can begin to move forward in the game. Just requires you to be patient.

Controls are tight and very crisp yet demanding, and the art work is excellent.

A very good game that will absolutely consume your time ---- it can be as hard as you want it to be ---- well worth a look, especially at this week's sale price.
