LA-MULANA is an “Archaeological Ruin Exploration Action Game,” bringing the classic appeal of adventure with the punishing difficulty of retro-inspired gaming. Search inside ancient ruins, seeking out the “Secret Treasure of Life” – which sleeps in the sprawling ruins of “LA-MULANA” and is said to be the beginning of all civilization. Unfortunately, priceless artifacts very rarely give themselves up easily.

Apart from the plethora of traps lying in wait, there are also monsters on the prowl, protecting the ruins. Head for the innermost depths of the ruins while solving a variety of mysteries, fending off monsters, and disarming traps. Forging ahead will be no simple task – the further into the depths you reach, the more difficult the mysteries become. The guardians of LA-MULANA do not take their job lightly.

LA-MULANA on Steam is the PC port version of the acclaimed remake for WiiWare. One of the first NIGORO games, LA-MULANA was originally created back in the creators’ “amateur” days and has been renown worldwide.
This game was created based on “that old-time feeling.” The creators wished to play the sort of games that enthralled them back in the day, only with more volume. The operability and difficulty level are certainly not “new school”. However, this game is highly recommended to gamers seeking out that feeling of total immersion that allows you to go full-on head-to-head with a game not found in somewhat lighter terms.

Coming up on it's ninth birthday, LA-MULANA continues to captivate, frustrate and annihilate new and old players alike. Whether it's your first time falling into the ruins or your 900th of getting decimated by Mushussu, we thank you for donning your explorer's hat, hoisting the whip and diving into our game.

If you can somehow figure out the cryptic ♥♥♥♥ this game throws your way, you'll have a good time.
Like, no seriously. This game is great, but how the hell do you figure all that out?

If you enjoy metroidvania style gameplay and absolutely maddening puzzles, this is certainly a game you will enjoy. As much as it made my head hurt from trying to decipher all the cryptic clues and figuring out how to progress, I enjoyed the steep difficulty curve this game's puzzles provided, for the most part. The teleporter mazes can just go die in a fire, along with the penultimate puzzle of the game (and it was toned down from the original version too, so that really says something abou its difficulty), but other than that I had a blast with the game's puzzles. The areas themselves aren't too bad in terms of surviving, but the bosses will push you to the limit of how well you've mastered the game's mechanics and combat. By the time you reach the third boss, the kiddie gloves are off and it gets real tough, real quick.
If you like your games very non-linear with brutal puzzles and some really tough combat, you'll enjoy this game. It's kind of like a 2D Dark Souls in a way, drops you into the ruins with little to no information, and you're on your own from there.
If spending hours retracing your steps looking for what new paths that upgrade you just picked up opened up, or just what that seemingly useless item does isn't something that sounds like a good time, then this may not be the game for you.

I want to like this game.

But I do not.

The controlls are sloppy, there's no player scaffolding, and the physics are atrocious. Two examples from the physics complaint: jump mechanics and preservation of inertia. There are two things that Super Mario Brothers, the gold standard of physics expectations in 2D platformers, do correctly. If I fall off a ledge running full-tilt, where do I fall? Straight down? No, but in La-Mulana, the answer is "yes."

I'm torn between conquering this and deleting it forever, or just deleting it forever and cursing the developers for burning away some of my money.

I would hope they fix the physics in the two aspects--oh! Another one! As a player, I have the expectation of being able to grab a ladder/rope in mid-fall. Here, I cannot. It turns a game that could be "interesting" into one that is "tolerable ... perhaps."

I cannot possibly recommend this game.

UPDATE: I looked at the Kickstarter page for This Game Part Two. I learned more from the manual there than I did about this game in my entire ownership, and I played the demo and found the physics problems remain. I will not be buying that game, and see now that this was an intentional design decision. Pity, as it's irritating and unenjoyable to be stymied by a game with sloppy controls and unintuitive physics and movement. "Hard" is fine; "broken" is irritating.

UPDATE 2: I now have ten hours of gameplay invested. I have only invested these, an additional eight hours over when I wrote my original review, in order to ensure I wasn't selling this game short. I was not. This is a game that I "tolerate," at best. I do not enjoy it. The controls and art and design all conspire to push the player into prime striking position for enemies, and there is little logical association between a switch and its effect. I have to wonder if the dev put this out there as a lark: a kind of special f-bomb to video game players everywhere: "you like to play games? Well f-you, guys!" This is the only explanation that makes sense with all the design and artistic conventions that have been broken in this game. I really, really, really wish I hadn't waited six months between purchase and play, because now I'm screwed out of $15. Worse, the person who wrote this software is now some percentage of that $15 richer, AND has been given a dollar-vote of, "yes, this game is good." It is not. It needs significant work. It won't get that work, though, as La-Mulana 2 is on Kickstarter and is more of the same; just a re-skin of this game with (presumably) different and equally-f-you-based "puzzles."

UPDATE 3: The game is growing on me, like a fungus. After 33 hours total gameplay and a 6-hour (new) savefile, it's interesting, but continues to be hamstrung by horrible platformer-controls and swimming mechanics. If you fall into lava with fireballs/rocks, you're pretty much done for, as you'll be batted around like a toy mouse in a room full of cats. Ice is similarly slick, but that's expected: it's ice, just ice where mu = 0.0001 or so. You will, in one particular area, be sent back and forth between screens if you forget that an enemy awaits just inside the screen transition, on ice.

Overall, with 33 hours in and really needing--truly, absolutely needing--a direct walkthrough read in the Chamber of Illusions (the whole "on bended knee" thing. Ugh!), I remain correct in my original assertion: I cannot recommend this game at its asking price given its treatment of the above controls/scenarios. Could I recommend it at the $5 mark? Yes. It's frustrating, as it is hamstrung by deliberately-bad controls, but for $5 you can do much worse.

UPDATE 4, 46 hours of play: I would recommend this game at the $5 mark. Comments on controls and physics are unchanged, but the game as a whole has grown on me. Gameplay improved post-Feather.
