What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Universe Sandbox ² is still in active development, but it's already a fully-featured space simulator that is an improvement in every way over the original. After over four years of work, we're proud of what we have to show, and we know many fans are eager to try it out.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“At least another year. But it's hard to give an accurate estimate. Building a universe simulator is a job that's never complete.

We have a long list of features and improvements that we're very excited about implementing, and which will keep us busy for a long time to come.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Some of the features we'd like to add:
  • Space megastructures
  • Basic life simulation
  • More dynamic terraforming & improved climate simulation
  • Better collisions on a wider range of scales
  • Missions and objectives
  • Steam Workshop support
  • Achievements
  • Language localization
  • Improved human scale mode
  • HTC Vive support (investigating supporting Oculus Touch)

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“For over a year alpha testers have poured hours into exploring Universe Sandbox ². It is already a fully-featured simulation.

We've fixed most of the serious stability issues and have made a lot of progress on optimizations for a range of hardware. Because it is a large-scale sandbox, though, it does have its share of bugs and could use polish in many areas.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We have no plans for changing the base price of Universe Sandbox ² at this time.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We actively seek community feedback from the in-game survey as well as from our forums and social media.

Community feedback helps us prioritize our long list of planned features and focus on fixing the worst bugs and issues.

We also add simulations and features based on community requests, like the recently added Game of Thrones sim and a simulation of the 2003 close encounter between Earth and Apollo 12's third stage rocket.

In the future we plan to integrate Steam Workshop for user-generated content and explore modding possibilities.”

Help Us Test the New Alpha 19 Preview

We're getting very close to officially releasing Alpha 19.

But before we can do that, we need help testing the latest preview version, Alpha 19 x3.

If you’ve already opted in to the preview version, Steam will automatically download this update.

If you haven't opted in yet, here's how to do it:

  • Right-click on the game title in your Steam Library
  • Click on ‘Properties’
  • Select the ‘Betas’ tab
  • Set the dropdown menu to 'alpha19preview'
  • Close the Properties window
  • Steam will now update Universe Sandbox ² to the preview version
  • Once updated, launch Universe Sandbox ²
Since the last preview version, Alpha 19 x2, we've improved the tidal heating and Roche limit effects, made further improvements to explosions, added new Physics sims and a tidal forces tutorial, added a new Milky Way background, and fixed a ton of bugs.

For a full list of what's new, improved, and fixed since Alpha 18, see our release notes: What's New.

When testing, please pay the most attention to the new tidal forces and explosion effects. You can share issues with us in-game via Home > Send Feedback, or on our forum: Support & Bugs Forum

The team is in Amsterdam this week for the Unite Europe 2016 conference. Once we're all back we'll work on fixing any remaining issues and polish up Alpha 19 for release.

Thanks for testing and for your patience!

About This Game

Universe Sandbox ² is a physics-based space simulator that allows you to create, destroy, and interact on an unimaginable scale.

It merges real-time gravity, climate, collision, and material interactions to reveal the beauty of our universe and the fragility of our planet. Universe Sandbox ² is the long awaited sequel to the original Universe Sandbox.

Universe Sandbox ² includes the desktop version and a new VR mode with support for the HTC Vive. This is a free, automatic update.

Simulate Gravity

N-body simulation at almost any speed using Newtonian mechanics. Real science, real physics, no supercomputer required.

Collide Planets & Stars

Epic, mind blowing collisions of massive planetary bodies.

Model Earth's Climate

Watch sea ice grow and recede with the seasons because of the tilt of the Earth: change the tilt and change the seasons. Or move the Earth farther from the Sun and freeze the entire planet.
Learn more...

Terraform Planets

Add carbon dioxide to a planet's atmosphere to heat it up. Then add water...

Deform Surfaces

Impact planets with asteroids and comets and leave behind massive, molten craters.

Supernova a Star

Make a star evolve by cranking up its age or mass, then watch a supernova unfold.

And more...

  • Material System - build planets out of Hydrogen, Iron, Rock, & Water
  • Solar flares & volatile trails
  • Procedurally generated stars & planets
  • Pulsars
  • Light-warping black holes
  • Dark matter

Universe Sandbox² is a simulation of space. Everything from collisions to tidal forces, from pulsars to whole galaxies, Universe Sandbox² allows you to mess about with all of that, and more. If you want to make Earth a star, go for it. If you want to bash moons together, go for it. If you want choreograph orbits, seriously, go for it. Do what you want. And (although i don't have a Vive) there is HTC Vive support and from what I've heard, It's great.

Get this, you wont regret it.

(10/10 would bang planets (together) again.)

I find this very relaxing and enjoying. Is that bad? I find crashing planets into other planets, turning mars into a black hole, and throwing random asteroids at the earth enjoyable. Well the music does make you feel relaxed...

But seriously this game is awesome. I love the music, the realism and the planet smashing. This game is great.

Make a comet 90000000000 times more massive than the sun.
Comet turns into blackhole.
Every planet in the solar system gets thrown lightyears away from eachother.

10/10 worth the cost.
Good game for entertainment and education.

If are interested in astronomy, space, getting baked and watching the cosmos this game is totally for you. Personally it is right up my alley, being able to create galaxies, spwaning black holes, watching our solar system's orbits, or letting on of the simulations run just before you go to sleep. Its really relaxing and it makes you feel so insignificant in the grand scheme of things. If you are not interested in what I said above this isen't really the game for you. Also check youtube before you buy it to see what you think... it is a little expensive but I had to buy it anyways.

I'm going to project this game in my room at night for some dope visuals!

Carefull! May cause Megalomania!

Just one Scenario: Our Solar System.

- Give Jupiter the same mass as the Sun.
- The sun starts moving towards Jupiter.
- Venus gets flung away into space at a velocity of almost 1000 km/s
- soon to be followed by earth and mars at a slower pace
- Saturn crashes into the sun
- The sun and Jupiter dance away into space circeling each other like a bolo
- Mecury is sticking to the sun no matter how erratic its orbit becomes
End result: no more solar system (unless you count Mercury still circeling the sun)

All of the above happened because I changed one Parameter!!

I love this game!
