What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Universe Sandbox ² is still in active development, but it's already a fully-featured space simulator that is an improvement in every way over the original. After over four years of work, we're proud of what we have to show, and we know many fans are eager to try it out.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“At least another year. But it's hard to give an accurate estimate. Building a universe simulator is a job that's never complete.

We have a long list of features and improvements that we're very excited about implementing, and which will keep us busy for a long time to come.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Some of the features we'd like to add:
  • Space megastructures
  • Basic life simulation
  • More dynamic terraforming & improved climate simulation
  • Better collisions on a wider range of scales
  • Missions and objectives
  • Steam Workshop support
  • Achievements
  • Language localization
  • Improved human scale mode
  • HTC Vive support (investigating supporting Oculus Touch)

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“For over a year alpha testers have poured hours into exploring Universe Sandbox ². It is already a fully-featured simulation.

We've fixed most of the serious stability issues and have made a lot of progress on optimizations for a range of hardware. Because it is a large-scale sandbox, though, it does have its share of bugs and could use polish in many areas.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We have no plans for changing the base price of Universe Sandbox ² at this time.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We actively seek community feedback from the in-game survey as well as from our forums and social media.

Community feedback helps us prioritize our long list of planned features and focus on fixing the worst bugs and issues.

We also add simulations and features based on community requests, like the recently added Game of Thrones sim and a simulation of the 2003 close encounter between Earth and Apollo 12's third stage rocket.

In the future we plan to integrate Steam Workshop for user-generated content and explore modding possibilities.”

Help Us Test the New Alpha 19 Preview

We're getting very close to officially releasing Alpha 19.

But before we can do that, we need help testing the latest preview version, Alpha 19 x3.

If you’ve already opted in to the preview version, Steam will automatically download this update.

If you haven't opted in yet, here's how to do it:

  • Right-click on the game title in your Steam Library
  • Click on ‘Properties’
  • Select the ‘Betas’ tab
  • Set the dropdown menu to 'alpha19preview'
  • Close the Properties window
  • Steam will now update Universe Sandbox ² to the preview version
  • Once updated, launch Universe Sandbox ²
Since the last preview version, Alpha 19 x2, we've improved the tidal heating and Roche limit effects, made further improvements to explosions, added new Physics sims and a tidal forces tutorial, added a new Milky Way background, and fixed a ton of bugs.

For a full list of what's new, improved, and fixed since Alpha 18, see our release notes: What's New.

When testing, please pay the most attention to the new tidal forces and explosion effects. You can share issues with us in-game via Home > Send Feedback, or on our forum: Support & Bugs Forum

The team is in Amsterdam this week for the Unite Europe 2016 conference. Once we're all back we'll work on fixing any remaining issues and polish up Alpha 19 for release.

Thanks for testing and for your patience!

About This Game

Universe Sandbox ² is a physics-based space simulator that allows you to create, destroy, and interact on an unimaginable scale.

It merges real-time gravity, climate, collision, and material interactions to reveal the beauty of our universe and the fragility of our planet. Universe Sandbox ² is the long awaited sequel to the original Universe Sandbox.

Universe Sandbox ² includes the desktop version and a new VR mode with support for the HTC Vive. This is a free, automatic update.

Simulate Gravity

N-body simulation at almost any speed using Newtonian mechanics. Real science, real physics, no supercomputer required.

Collide Planets & Stars

Epic, mind blowing collisions of massive planetary bodies.

Model Earth's Climate

Watch sea ice grow and recede with the seasons because of the tilt of the Earth: change the tilt and change the seasons. Or move the Earth farther from the Sun and freeze the entire planet.
Learn more...

Terraform Planets

Add carbon dioxide to a planet's atmosphere to heat it up. Then add water...

Deform Surfaces

Impact planets with asteroids and comets and leave behind massive, molten craters.

Supernova a Star

Make a star evolve by cranking up its age or mass, then watch a supernova unfold.

And more...

  • Material System - build planets out of Hydrogen, Iron, Rock, & Water
  • Solar flares & volatile trails
  • Procedurally generated stars & planets
  • Pulsars
  • Light-warping black holes
  • Dark matter

This game is already in a fantastic state for those of us who adore science. Or if you just like screwing with physics. You can very slowly and carefully set things up, or just turn things into black holes. Throw the moon into Venus in slow motion. Or throw a T.A.R.D.I.S. to mars. Everything!

Amazingly accurate, love messing around with gravity and other forces/conditions to *improve* our beloved Solar System and beyond. For those who enjoy Astronomy/Physics/Real-Time Destruction of the Universe, Universe Sandbox (squared) is definitely a great choice.

How to play game
Step 1: Make Pluto great again (by making it the size of Betelgeuse).
Step 2: Watch the solar system collapse into an inferno of death.
Step 3: Come to the realization that if you were god we would all be dead.

10/10 would watch all creation get annihilated again.

It is only this game where it's normal to say, "Aw damn, I just caused a supernova."

You can do so much in this game, want to throw a Black Hole at the Solar system and see what happens? You can do that.

Want to send the Moon or Mars on a collision course with the Earth and watch as landmasses are consumed by the fire and lava from the explosion? You can do that.

Want to make a fully functioning solar system with planets filled with life? You can do that.

Basically, if it's in space and obeys the laws of physics, you can do it.

10/10 would burn, freeze, and smash Earth again.

So after many countless hours of fun i thought it is time to write a review!

The game is well put together and is very instresting and enjoyable the graphics are outstanding and the game itself is very unique! the game is really worth the purchase as its a game to always come back to because you can do so much! it truly is a unqie and terrific simulation

Only downfall is that the game can get a tad tidus and as after a while! you sort of realise that it the game does not get updated that regular which i think is a sham as the game itself is terrfic!

I personally think that the next steps would be to add the feature of life, even just being able to see the life created thrive and possible but smart enough to build satalites and other space mechanics! just being able to see if you made a planet that could host life and you could actually see there satilites in orbit as if it was a moon and could see what the object looked like! also being able to see there shuttles created flw towards a planet or moon and would be easy to add as the flight path could look like an object on course to crash into the planet if you know what i mean. This may sound alot to add but personal think it would be a great idea and would add 1000+ hours onto my universal sandbox experince

Love smashing planets with pumpkins. The realism in this game is amazing.
10/10 would kill everyone with pumpkins!

(Changed because I feel bad for leaving a negative review)
