Hello Everyone!

Patch 1.4 and Heart of Gold are available now, and they’ve been met with an overwhelmingly positive response from you. We’re pleased that the changes we’ve made and the new expansion have met, and in some cases, exceeded your expectations!

Darkest greetings Underlord,

It’s a glorious day indeed - once again the drums of war echo through the darkest caverns of Kairos, hundreds of minions marching, scuttering and squelching towards the dukedom of Phaestus, ready to usher in a new age of darkness and destruction.

Yes indeed after months of development, testing and indeed teasing tidbits to our community, Heart of Gold is finally on its way to you down the tubes of the Internet - and with it comes the absolutely massive patch 1.4, Gold Rush!

Heart of Gold

Heart of Gold is the first paid expansion pack for War for the Overworld. It can be purchased at http://buy.wftogame.com, and on Steam, Green Man Gaming and Humble. Early Adopters of War for the Overworld, those that bought it before Mar 3rd 2015, will find that they already own the DLC!

Key Features

  • An expanded story told across 4 brand new, fully voice acted Campaign levels, this time played from the perspective of Underlord Kasita. The levels are more open-ended than in the original game, directly addressing feedback from our most loyal Underlords.
  • New enemies to wage war against including the wizard Mandalf the Maroon, and the entire family of the Duke of Phaestus!
  • An additional 4 Aspects to master: Sentinel (defence), Gild (spell), Aureate Monolith (construct), and a new golden Titan - the Colossus.

Our trilogy of short stories concludes with “The Colossal Dwarf” as Gidro Brunnsen faces down the inevitable demise of the dukedom of Phaestus, and the most formidable soldier in Kasita’s horde.

Do not buy. It's a buggy mess. Troops go the longest way possible around the map trying to get around unlocked doors (or the game can't route units at all) peeling off and attacking the enemy HQ on the way and completely suiciding themselves. Meanwhile your core is being attacked and there's not a damn thing you can do about it.

Maybe you guys should add new features such as new races or factions.
Since this is War for the Overworld, why not make some different terrain such as water world, rocky world, snow world, skies, grass land or mixed

Crash during my first loading, and had to wait 5 hours to see if this game work.

5 whole hours of nothing. The loading stuck, crash report appear, and meh.

Tried to send the game report to dev-forum, but im not waiting anymore.

I renamed a shortcut of this game to "Dungeon Keeper 3". Because that's what it is. I waited for Dungeon Keeper 3 for a decade, and wasn't disappointed in WftO in the least.

It has the same core mechanics, the same dark humor and even the same voice actor for narration, while adding new elements into the mix, such as very nice visuals, new creatures, new rooms, new spells (+ rituals, really OP spells which cost no mana, but have to be channeled in a special room first), new story and sins system (think of a skill tree, but with rooms/spells/constructs instead of usual skills).

Also, there are skins for dungeons. And they all are amazing.

Just bought the game, and was unable to play it - the game would hang after the load screen. I uninstalled it and reinstalled nothing, I tried taking out the DLC and running it vanilla, nothing. I tried the various tips and tricks listed, nothing. I double checked that I meet, or exceed, the recommended requriements, and I nail them all, and in some cases, far exceed them. It still doesn't work. When a game has been out for as long as this game has been, I expect to not have "
unable to play" issues that I have here. On release? Sure! Annoying but sure. Here? that's not acceptabel or feasible. Thus, for the first time in my life, I am going to submit a request with Steam to return a game. Because, frankyl, I shouldn;t have to spend a hour of my personal life on the weekend, buying, installing, trying to run, reading tips, and then doing various things to get a game to work, so that then, I can try to actualyl have fun. It's not worth the investment to me.

As a longtime fan of Bullfrog's Dungeon Keeper series, I came into WFTO with lofty expectations. It's for this reason that I feel it would be impossible for me to write an unbiased review of the game based entirely upon its own merits, so I'm not going to try.

This *is* Dungeon Keeper 3; and thus far, it has satisfied or exceeded my expectations on every level.

If you're like me and you've been waiting for all the bugs and nasty bits to be hammered out before you spend your money, the time has come. With the release of the Gold Rush patch and DLC, the game is technically solid, artistically inspired, full of content, brimming with devious personality, and one hell of a good time for god-game enthusiasts.

Haven't tried this game til now cause of the numerous bugs reported by users initially. Im an old DK1 and DK2 (in lesser degree) fan of all times. Played for a little more than 3 hours and it really feels like the DK3 we deserve. Every mission takes a full hour if you venture to seek all the secrets it holds, and fully level up your creatures.
It seems a bit easier than the original DK1, but i was way younger then and it might be just that. Though i haven't played the new campaign, it feels great to see the developers are continually trying to get new content to the base game since this game was (in my point of view) intented to be played solo, like the original.

I held off getting this game for awhile because I figured it was another cheap Dungeon Keeper knockoff. Now that I've played it I can definitely say that it's a worthy successor to DK2. More than just a graphical upgrade, with the addition of quality of life improvements like Warbands and Impasses, useful spells like Replacement Earth, and new mechanics like rituals, alchemy, and titans, War for the Overworld is actually a nice improvement over the Dungeon Keeper games, pretty much fixing all the things that were annoying or hard to manage while still adding new complexities and strategies. Skirmish mode and multiplayer make a welcome return as well.

Some people report that the game is buggy, but I have only run into a couple small glitches, mostly in the form of minion animations that don't look quite right.

This is my first Steam review, so i'll try to make it a good one; it might be a bit longwinded (TL;DR is at the bottom), but i'd like to make it as thorough as possible becouse the game and it's devs deserve as much.
First off, my PC specs so you'll know what i play it on:

• Windows 7 64 bit
• Intel Core i5 4570 @3.20 GHz
• AMD Radeon R7 200 Series, 2GB RAM
• 8GB RAM

My history with the genre
I've played Dungeon Keeper 1 + The deeper dungeons & Dungeon Keeper 2 on multiple occasions & systems over the years.
Being a fan of both originals, i was quite sad when EA first purchased the franchise and then made their intentions clear by releasing that mobile DK game... My hopes for the franchises' rebirth were only raised when i found out about a team of independant DK enthusiasts trying to make a true spiritual successor to the original games.
I've followed the games' progress through it's kickstarter campaign and it's first appearance on Steam, but i didn't put any money in to it until it's official release.

The initial release
As i'm sure some will already know, the initial release of WftO was a rocky one; as the developers explained, the game had to be either rushed out with bugs so they got enough funds to polish it later or scrapped altogether, which i'm sure no DK enthusiast would like to see.
I decided to purchase the Underlord edition anyway despite of the existing bugs, mostly becouse i had good faith in the devs; i guessed they wouldn't abandon their game after all the trouble they went through to make it in the first place; as it turned out in the following months, my faith was deserved.

The current state of the game, as of patch 1.4 & Heart of Gold release
I've now replayed the basic campaign twice and the Heart of Gold campaign once; by my second replay at patch 1.2 most of the bugs present at launch were fixed; by then also the performance had been improved notably.
By purchasing the Underlord edition at the games' release, i got the expansion for free (which is awesome btw); now having the full WftO expirience, here's my personal list of pro's & possible con's (if they bother you, that is).

PRO'S

  • Imho the closest thing to a spiritual successor to the original Dungeon Keeper series you can find on the gaming market today, including the look & sound of the game (i'll get to the »feel« a bit later)

  • the devs went out of their way to secure Richard Ridings (the original DK narrator) for the narrration of WftO and it definitely payed off – with audio being a large part of what made the DK games so good, just hearing his ramblings again gave me a lovely throwback to the good old days

  • the developers started out as a small team of DK enthusiasts with a dream; they've shown their dedication and love for the game throughout it's inception as well as through the rough parts; they didn't abandon it while it was at it's lowest point but worked hard to bring it to it's current good state

  • the artstyle & graphics are ofcourse more colorful and advanced than in DK, but that doesn't detriment to the games' general atmosphere; if you'll zoom in or even take a look in first person – another welcome throwback from DK – you'll find many nice details around your dungeon.

  • the gameplay is largely – although not exactly – similar to DK; you dig out your dungeon, train your minions and do battle in basicly the same manner as you did in DK 1 & 2; ofcourse the devs also had to try and bring some improvements and »fresh wind« in to the genre, where the games' Sin system and some new map & campaign mechanics come in to play (more on that a bit later)

  • useful gameplay & UI improvements, some of which had to be implemented becouse of certain new map & campaign mechanics; stuff like the gamespeed slider, the Impasse command and the »Peace army« option

  • integrated map editor and workshop support – you can make your own dungeon creations, share them and battle over them with other players

POSSIBLE CON'S

  • Many of the initial complaints were in regard to some of the original campaigns' parts being too »rushy« for a DK successor; indeed there are some missions during which you have to do certain stuff quickly, otherwise the enemy will win. But in the devs' defence, in the meantime most of those maps have been rebalanced and they also included the previously mentioned gamespeed slider, with which you can always slow your game down in case stuff should happen too quickly. Also, due to popular demand, the 4 new missions in the HoG campaign are much more akin to the original DK »explore & expand« playstyle.

  • Becouse of copyrights, WftO isn't an exact DK clone/successor; for instance, you won't find Horny, Bile Demons or the Casino in the game anymore, although all of those have their approximate counterparts in WftO. Some of them understandably behave a bit differently here, which may turn off some DK purists, but if you're willing to overlook certain details or are new to the genre, you should have no problem with the differences.

  • In combination with both points above, the overall gameplay feeling is mostly similar to DK but also distinctly different in certain areas and missions, which may again turn off some DK purists; if you have no problem with having some »fresh wind« in the genre or you haven't played the original Dungeon Keeper, you should be in the green.

  • Although Ridings is the undisputed main star in the voice acting area, there are certain parts of the game, where the voice-acting is a bit underwhelming; the other voice-actors probably did their best to do a proper job, but there's still a chance you'll get the occasional cringe if you're succeptible to such things.

  • There are still some bugs, crashes and performance issues present in the game. As usually, some people expirience one thing and others a different thing based on their PC; playing the HoG campaign (1.4) on the PC i specified in the beginning, i've encountered one notable bug and two crashes, but the vanilla campaign functioned flawlessly for me even back in version 1.2. Based on my expirience from the launch up to now, i'd say that the devs are devoted enough to guarantee most of the current HoG bugs gone in the near future, but you might encounter a problem even so (send a report, they definitely read them)
That's about it; if you've made it so far, thanks for reading and i hope i could help you with my review.

TL;DR - if you're a fan of the Dungeon Keeper series or you're new to the dungeon sim genre, i can recommend playing War for the Overworld. Although it is somewhat different to the DK series in certain parts, the overal playstyle, sound and look all borrow heavily on it, making it probably the closest thing to a DK3 on the current gaming market. The overall performance was stable on my rig; there are some issues and bugs present, but based on my past expirience the devs work dilligently on fixing them.

This game is a rehash of Dungeon Keeper 2, so if you enjoyed that game, you'll enjoy this. The added systems of 'sins' and new rooms don't add a lot to the game so you might be better off just getting an old copy of DK2 and playing that.

There are numerous bugs still present even after the enormous update that rolled out a few days ago. For instance, I had to manually change the screen resolution within a text file because it was permanently set to 600x400 in game. Also, most of my minions couldn't cross the bridge to fight the final boss. Add in the very low framerate when you have more than 15-20 creatures on the same screen.

The end of the game cliffhangs to get you to buy the expansion. The whole game took about 8 hours to finish. The skirmish mode, while complete, isn't really hours of fun.

Really, just get Dungeon Keeper 2 online and save your $20.

Hands down, one of the best early acces games i've seen so far.
There are a few technical glitches (anti virus thinks its "unsafe", screen res locked at start up), but all where solved very quickly with some good help in the forum.

Gameplay so far is VERY smooth, if you'r old enough to have spent too many hours enjoying Dungeon Keeper 1&2, you'll love this! The narrator brings back memories, the playstyle is very familiar, though with some added researching and a tech tree, monsters and spells are mostly a renewed version of the old, with a few classics still lingering in the corners, campaign is already extensive and starts off gently with some build in challenges hidden in achivements :)

10/10 here - and its not even done yet!!!

With the new patch, I would have no problems recommending this to any fan of the old Bullfrog games like Dungeon Keeper.

Good: Very entertaining, good level design, lots of details, good music, good old gameplay from Dungeon Keeper.
Bad: It's not super polished, and performance problems in late game could be a problem for some computers.

While I generally think this game is a thumbs up, I can't say I am entirely happy with the level of polish... or lack there of.

It truly feels like a sequel or spiritual successor to Dungeon Keeper 2, but seems to lack a little of the heart that went into that title. It has a similar sense of humor, but maybe a bit more drab than the old DK franchise. I can see that the devs loved DK and wanted to make this as close to that concept as possible, but in too many places it falls just shy of the potential.

The old Dungeon Keeper games had some bad bugs in them that made them almost inplayable at times and unfortunately this game does follow that same trend as well. That being said, the devs have not given up on this game and appear to be trying to fix, improve, and expand on the game months after it's full release, so here is to hoping this game gets enough love from both players and devs over time.

All said, it does feel like Dungeon Keeper 2.5... I just wish it had felt more like Dungeon Keeper 3. But still a fun game and if you want to try something new or something old that feels new again, give this game a try. Worth a play.

This game is both good and bad. The game is fun and enjoyable at times. With a fully fleshed out campaign experiance, and good multiplayer. It also has great gameplay mechanics and a large variety of creatures, which allows for a good strategy game. It is also one of the only good dungeon keeper spiritual succesors.

Despite this the game is glitchy and runs like crap. It's glitchy and requires a good PC to be able to run properly. If you love dungoeon keeper you will love this game. 6/10. I would give it higher if it wasnt for how badly the game runs.

When War for the Overworld was released it was a mess with crashes, stuttering, bugs and performance issues. Over time the game has been patched, updated and stabilized to the point you can play it without any frustration from the technical side.

The gameplay itself is, well, a Dungeon Keeper clone. In this management game you are tasked with building a dungeon, attract evil minions and eventually send them to destroy the forces of good. It is a decent game, nothing that will blow you away but it can be very fun at times.

Let me say this game sort of defines why steam needs a neutral button and not just thumbs up/down.

On the one hand I do love the game; but on the other I am massively aware that the bulk of my love comes from the nostalgia trip of how much I loved Dungeon Keeper (and DK2).

If it were not for Dungeon Keeper I'm not sure I could like this game half as much as I do. I am keenly aware that this game was made by fans of Dungeon Keeper; and for what it is there is an amazing wealth of throwback to the game it is trying to emulate.

Unfortunately it also suffers from everything you would expect from what is essentially a "mod team" that is trying to convert itself to an actual development studio. The amateur mistakes show through with poor game balance and narrow strategic layers that never reach the level of variety as the original DK's pulled off. The costs of spells, the speed of unit deployment, the limited number of strategies that the enemy AI is able to cope with; the list of cons is fairly long.

Basically what the game ends up being is a very polished shell with Dungeon Keeper logos painted all over it but inside is just empty and hollow.

To their credit this team also continues to expand on the game, and I'll admit there has been improvement over time. But the reality is that it's a very long time coming. For a released game we're still seeing things added that should have been in from day one (and that was years ago...).

In summary this game is a labor of love from a devoted team trying to recreate Dungeon Keeper and if you are a fan of that old series and can afford to throw money in their direction. Do it. This may in the end be the only close successor the gaming world will see (at least in this decade). Just be aware that the game is heavily flawed and I'm not sure the dev team has the experience needed to ever make it as-good-as Dungeon Keeper really was, so we (as a community) must either foster them in the hopes they improve or just play it for what it is and cry over what's missing.

On a side note if you have not played the originals; find them. Get Dungeon Keeper and Dungeon Keeper 2; they are available on GOG, and worth the effort. Despite the slightly aging graphics they are still fantastic games. Then come play War for the Overworld with us and pray it continues to reach for the glory of what Dungeon Keeper once was.

As-is I'll continue to play War for the Overworld occasionally and hope the team behind it continues to learn and improve on it (which they have done for many years now, impressively for a team with no official training or past game development experience)

Refreshing to have a game by actually devoted and competent Developers.

War for the Overworld is indeed a modern Dungeon Keeper, unlike the travesty mobile garbage that EA spewed forth seeking quick unearned cash.

It channels the spirit of Bullfrog back from the desiccated corpse in EA's droppings and Molyneux's sundered reputation.

The game is fun in and of its own as well as being continuously improved. Reward these actually care about your purchase developers and yourself by adding this game to your stable.

Was debating pulling the trigger on this one for a long time and finally did so. I heard that the release was rough and so I gave it some time to get fixed but with the Doom wait wiping me out, I needed something new.

In a nutshell, game is amazing if you enjoyed DK2. It's not perfect, but the devs are extremely active and dedicated even now and there is always new content and modes coming out. Plenty to do and see even now.

If you can get around the downsides like mediocre ai, a few performance issues and one or two overtuned or frustrating missions, highly recommended.

Great game. Especially fun if you like the Dungeon Keeper series. It felt like "Dungeon Keeper 3" to me, which I really consider a compliment!

Pro's
  • Really brings you back to the good old days, playing the bad guy for once instead!
  • Very original strategy game, trying to attract creatures based on certain rooms
  • Takes many good ideas from the Dungeon Keeper series and improved on them or made quality-of-life improvements


Cons
  • Creature spawning mechanics and dictating which creatures you get are two things I still don't understand. Certain rooms attract certain creatures, but which ones spawn and how many you can get max etc. confused me all the way up to the end
  • There's no "priority list" like in games such at the Settlers where you can force certain actions to have priority over other. For example where to bring defeated monsters (to the crypt, or the prison for.. other uses? :D ).
  • It felt easier than the Dungeon Keeper series. Then again I was younger when I played that so it could've been due to that, too.

I would've loved if the game had even more rooms and "forces" you to decide on a certain build, like focussing on sorcery, invest heavily into beasts, conversion of enemies, traps & alchemy, or just raw muscle power via the training room. Right now you can do everything really well and I often ended up trying to challenge myself by picking one.

All in all, an awesome game!

The game has a very interesting premise, but it falls flat because of the interface. The developers have obviously wasted quite a bit of time on fancy models and graphics but not enough on UI design. The UI makes even simple tasks quite difficult to accomplish the worst offender being that they replace your mouse cursor with a fancy animated hand that you can never tell quite what is being pointed at without waiting for the cursor highlighting to catch up.

The scale on which things happen also tends to make things difficult. The overall map is quite large relative to the individual unit and the player base is required to be somewhat large to support any decent number of units and the units themselves are quite tiny. Zoom in to issue orders to units and you cant navigate the map as easily, zoom out to navigate and you cant issue orders as effectively; there is no zoom level where you can effectively do both.

I held off getting this game for awhile because I figured it was another cheap Dungeon Keeper knockoff. Now that I've played it I can definitely say that it's a worthy successor to DK2. More than just a graphical upgrade, with the addition of quality of life improvements like Warbands and Impasses, useful spells like Replacement Earth, and new mechanics like rituals, alchemy, and titans, War for the Overworld is actually a nice improvement over the Dungeon Keeper games, pretty much fixing all the things that were annoying or hard to manage while still adding new complexities and strategies. Skirmish mode and multiplayer make a welcome return as well.

Some people report that the game is buggy, but I have only run into a couple small glitches, mostly in the form of minion animations that don't look quite right.

Everything I had hoped for and more!

First off: I'm a very old fan of the original Dungeon Keeper series from Bullfrog - so many games that have been called "Dungeon Keeper clones" or spiritual sequels have just not lived up to the hype, so when this game came out, I was skeptical.

Despite this, I do admit to buying Early Access when the game consisted of nothing but square digging and imp slapping. I bought it, set it aside, and waited for the release message to check it out.

This is one of the very few games coming out of Early Access that truly realized their potential. It has everything - the exploration, the dungeon building, a large variety of creatures with different looks and likes/dislikes, in depth magic and room progression trees, and - of course - the ability to slap your imps.

10/10 would back again.

Before we even get in to gameplay - I feel I have to point out just how much time and effort the dev team have put into this game since the days of early release. When the game first came out in beta - touted as the spiritual successor to DK2, it was full of bugs, glitches, frustrations and was pretty unplayable.
Fast forward to now, and we have what's basically a different game to when it started; with huge patches, and now an official expansion pack. What a journey - and I have to give credit where credit is due to the developers, in regards to their time, effort, and the way they've interacted and responded to the community feedback.

The game itself - in my opinion is everything we could have hoped for, if there ever was an official DK3. Updated graphics, new (very inventive) units, spells, skills; but of course all the original charm of the series we love, including the voice work! :)
Really enjoying playing this, and presume I will contunue to do so for some time. To all fans of dungeon sims - don't hesitate. I don't think you'll be disappointed! Welcome back Underlords.

This is my first Steam review, so i'll try to make it a good one; it might be a bit longwinded (TL;DR is at the bottom), but i'd like to make it as thorough as possible becouse the game and it's devs deserve as much.
First off, my PC specs so you'll know what i play it on:

• Windows 7 64 bit
• Intel Core i5 4570 @3.20 GHz
• AMD Radeon R7 200 Series, 2GB RAM
• 8GB RAM

My history with the genre
I've played Dungeon Keeper 1 + The deeper dungeons & Dungeon Keeper 2 on multiple occasions & systems over the years.
Being a fan of both originals, i was quite sad when EA first purchased the franchise and then made their intentions clear by releasing that mobile DK game... My hopes for the franchises' rebirth were only raised when i found out about a team of independant DK enthusiasts trying to make a true spiritual successor to the original games.
I've followed the games' progress through it's kickstarter campaign and it's first appearance on Steam, but i didn't put any money in to it until it's official release.

The initial release
As i'm sure some will already know, the initial release of WftO was a rocky one; as the developers explained, the game had to be either rushed out with bugs so they got enough funds to polish it later or scrapped altogether, which i'm sure no DK enthusiast would like to see.
I decided to purchase the Underlord edition anyway despite of the existing bugs, mostly becouse i had good faith in the devs; i guessed they wouldn't abandon their game after all the trouble they went through to make it in the first place; as it turned out in the following months, my faith was deserved.

The current state of the game, as of patch 1.4 & Heart of Gold release
I've now replayed the basic campaign twice and the Heart of Gold campaign once; by my second replay at patch 1.2 most of the bugs present at launch were fixed; by then also the performance had been improved notably.
By purchasing the Underlord edition at the games' release, i got the expansion for free (which is awesome btw); now having the full WftO expirience, here's my personal list of pro's & possible con's (if they bother you, that is).

PRO'S

  • Imho the closest thing to a spiritual successor to the original Dungeon Keeper series you can find on the gaming market today, including the look & sound of the game (i'll get to the »feel« a bit later)

  • the devs went out of their way to secure Richard Ridings (the original DK narrator) for the narrration of WftO and it definitely payed off – with audio being a large part of what made the DK games so good, just hearing his ramblings again gave me a lovely throwback to the good old days

  • the developers started out as a small team of DK enthusiasts with a dream; they've shown their dedication and love for the game throughout it's inception as well as through the rough parts; they didn't abandon it while it was at it's lowest point but worked hard to bring it to it's current good state

  • the artstyle & graphics are ofcourse more colorful and advanced than in DK, but that doesn't detriment to the games' general atmosphere; if you'll zoom in or even take a look in first person – another welcome throwback from DK – you'll find many nice details around your dungeon.

  • the gameplay is largely – although not exactly – similar to DK; you dig out your dungeon, train your minions and do battle in basicly the same manner as you did in DK 1 & 2; ofcourse the devs also had to try and bring some improvements and »fresh wind« in to the genre, where the games' Sin system and some new map & campaign mechanics come in to play (more on that a bit later)

  • useful gameplay & UI improvements, some of which had to be implemented becouse of certain new map & campaign mechanics; stuff like the gamespeed slider, the Impasse command and the »Peace army« option

  • integrated map editor and workshop support – you can make your own dungeon creations, share them and battle over them with other players

POSSIBLE CON'S

  • Many of the initial complaints were in regard to some of the original campaigns' parts being too »rushy« for a DK successor; indeed there are some missions during which you have to do certain stuff quickly, otherwise the enemy will win. But in the devs' defence, in the meantime most of those maps have been rebalanced and they also included the previously mentioned gamespeed slider, with which you can always slow your game down in case stuff should happen too quickly. Also, due to popular demand, the 4 new missions in the HoG campaign are much more akin to the original DK »explore & expand« playstyle.

  • Becouse of copyrights, WftO isn't an exact DK clone/successor; for instance, you won't find Horny, Bile Demons or the Casino in the game anymore, although all of those have their approximate counterparts in WftO. Some of them understandably behave a bit differently here, which may turn off some DK purists, but if you're willing to overlook certain details or are new to the genre, you should have no problem with the differences.

  • In combination with both points above, the overall gameplay feeling is mostly similar to DK but also distinctly different in certain areas and missions, which may again turn off some DK purists; if you have no problem with having some »fresh wind« in the genre or you haven't played the original Dungeon Keeper, you should be in the green.

  • Although Ridings is the undisputed main star in the voice acting area, there are certain parts of the game, where the voice-acting is a bit underwhelming; the other voice-actors probably did their best to do a proper job, but there's still a chance you'll get the occasional cringe if you're succeptible to such things.

  • There are still some bugs, crashes and performance issues present in the game. As usually, some people expirience one thing and others a different thing based on their PC; playing the HoG campaign (1.4) on the PC i specified in the beginning, i've encountered one notable bug and two crashes, but the vanilla campaign functioned flawlessly for me even back in version 1.2. Based on my expirience from the launch up to now, i'd say that the devs are devoted enough to guarantee most of the current HoG bugs gone in the near future, but you might encounter a problem even so (send a report, they definitely read them)

TL;DR - if you're a fan of the Dungeon Keeper series or you're new to the dungeon sim genre, i can recommend playing War for the Overworld. Although it is somewhat different to the DK series in certain parts, the overal playstyle, sound and look all borrow heavily on it, making it probably the closest thing to a DK3 on the current gaming market. The overall performance was stable on my rig; there are some issues and bugs present, but based on my past expirience the devs work dilligently on fixing them.

This game keeps on giving!
These devs are amazing at what they do. Game play was medicore at best when I first aquired this on steam, since, it has turned into something totally different and unique.

Graphics are nice, the units all feel unique in abilities and what they offer your dungeon, the recent expansion added other ways t play as well, made the strategy more, strategic if you will. What a simply amazing piece of software this is:)

So ya, I reccommend this game to anyone looking for a fun dungeon builder that requires brains to play!

Oh, P.S. These Devs are constantly listening to the people and providing Quality Updates, not some dev that says they listen but then always do what they want, these Guys do it right.

TLDR: Buy the game if you loved DK1 and / or DK2. If your new to the "franchise" buy it still, you won't regret it, especially if you love dark humour and room building.


As many others have written, this game brings the tear for nostalgia running down your cheek when you launch the first mission. The Dungeon Keeper and DK2 aspect of this game is there, the room building, even the imps have the same animation. I was so surprised how close to the "old thing" it was, and how well the old games bugs and glitches were fixed.

As I said, it's quite the nostalgia trip.

One thing to note though, and I'm sure the devs of this game are aware and trying to fix is that this game has a minor memory leak on longer sessions. Approx. 6 hours in you'll start to freeze lag etc, but is easily fixed through killing the program and starting again, just remember to save your progress. :)

One thing that I'd hope is that this game would somehow intertwine the story of where DK2 was headed, as the story was awesome, even though the animation was crap in todays world. But I did feel like the story did somehow intertwine a little with DK2 and DK1 especially.

Another request for the developers is the lack of Windowed Fullscreen mode :)

I have been playing this on and off since early beta [really more of an alpha really] and I am still loving it. If you ever liked dungeon keeper, [the real one, not that mobile pile of crud], then just get this game!
Campaign is alright, I enjoyed but its skirmish that I really enjoyed, and now with the ability to make your own maps, or download ones others have made …… hours of enjoyment.
