As someone who liked the old dungeon keeper games, when I saw this game go on kickstarter I was very excited about it. This genre of game is unique in a sense that you are the evil. You build a kingdom but you cannot control those who join your cause and your style of building defines what archetype of mobs join you.
I must say that for a game that has just released it is to be expected to have a slightly buggy experience, however in this case there really are bugs everywhere. The game feels unfinished. When you open up the menu after installing and click multiplayer the first thing that prompts up is, this will be patched in. The same happens when you click survival mode, and when you click skirmish there is a shocking three maps. The only fully functional mode as of right now is the campaign. This was already a huge letdown, minutes after finishing my download.
I didn't let it phase me and I went for the campaign. Now from the very start I ran into bugs and problems. As a former dungeon keeper player and with many games behind my belt I have a good idea on how to play games. Now this is very important because the tutorial is horrible. They barely scrape the surface of what buildings do, there is no explanation what so ever how the controls work. I was unable to move my camera, had issues with targetting. You'd figure okay, I will read the tooltips but frankly, there are no useful tooltips anywhere in the game to be found. Mostly there are placeholders from an early alpha build. "shrine prop siege" doesn't tell me what it does? The big thing for this game is the micro management of the buildings, however there is no explanation on how the sizes of your exhibits have to be in order to recruit units. The props are invisible. And you can slap units but there is no real talk on how it affects efficiency.
So I went in completely blind. Now the early campaign maps are fairly easy, straightforward objectives and simple tasks. With no time pressure that is good. The only problem is that you cannot build anything else while you have a certain task. Build a X on this tile. Then you cannot continue to do what you were doing, it forces you to do something specific, some of the cutscene 'talks' appear to be unskippable and this is just tiny annoyances everywhere.
I pushed onward, in a quite bad mood now. And then I encountered many little bugs. I summoned a vampire, it went mad. Started killing my units but I had no idea how to fix that. Everytime I cast a scouting ritual my pc froze up completely. Now I have a really expensive modern pc less than two months old. That is just bad scripting. Lag, delay and crashes occurred regulary. I had units bug into the wall and frankly no idea what half of the spells, flasks or shrines are for. The possesion spell, which was a huge thing, is completely broken.
So yes. I did finish the campaign. It took me roughly 12 hours. I only had to restart one map which I failed on my part. So through the buggy experience I can say that the campaign has a good design, it is versatile and interesting. The small storyline has a funny plot to it. But its so dissatisfyingly short, and the experience was a chain hindrance of little problems that I can't say I fully enjoyed it. There was no map that was challenging in the entire campaign and by the time most buildings and plots are revealed you are done.
I then decided to take on the AI in skirmishes just to see what the full experience would be like. Considering I hadn't had that strong opponents in the campaign. Now I took on every AI setting on master, they were challenging. So I will say that the game definatly has potential. It is fun in design, fun in concept and I'm sure that with some more patches and content this will be a good game. For those who have seen the totalbiscuit WTF video, what he says is very true. This game looks like it will be worthwhile, in 6months or more to come. As of right now, I cannot recommend this game. I personally found it fun, but I am dissapointed in what I consider a premature release and I hope the developpers will put effort into this game, and make it great. As I think it can be.
