About This Game

Bientôt l’été is a videogame for two players. Two players who pretend to be lovers. They pretend to be lovers separated from each other by lightyears of deep space. They have lonely walks along the shore of a simulated ocean, thinking wistful thoughts of each other. Thoughts from ancient Earth literature by Marguerite Duras.

The empty beach, the strong wind, the gentle music and a small colony of electric seagulls are their only companions. Yet their heart is full and their mind confused. Walk along the shore, until they meet the emptiness.

When it all becomes too much, they run towards each other. Enabled by intergalactic networks, they touch each other’s holographic bodies in cyberspace. A surreal game of chess becomes the apparatus through which they, man and woman, can talk. The words they have were given to them, as they have always been to lovers everywhere.

The sea remains, tugging at their hearts when not at their hairs and clothes, as it itself is tugged by the virtual moon. And as great as the desire for the other may be, they cannot stay away from the wind and the waves and the sand. Every time they find a new treasure. An abandoned tennis field. An heap of coal. A dead dog. Ordinary. Absurd. Meaningless. Yet comforting.

Enter a café, exit a villa, enter a casino, exit the ruin of an ancient colonial mansion. We know this is not real. So it doesn’t surprise us. Nothing surprises us. It doesn’t matter when you feel the pain of love. Of being in love, of falling in love, of leaving in love. There is no such thing as time. There is only love. And it never stops. No matter how much it hurts.

For the record, I have played this game, but for some reason Steam isn't showing my actual time put into it.

"A work of art"

Yes, I have to admit that Bientôt l'été was indeed a work of art. But that's the exact reason this game is practically unplayable. I gave it a little while, hoping to get somewhere, but instead I just sat there and played chess while rereading the same dialogue over and over. I don't know whether this game gets more interesting or enjoyable later on, but from what I have played, I can tell you that I'm glad I bought this during last year's Summer Sale, because for $9.99, Bientôt l'été shouldn't be payed for until it goes on sale... between 80-100% off.

I never understod this game. I watched and read reviews about this game so maybe I could be able to do so. I played it, and I was really excited about giving it a try, but after some time.. I became hopeless. So here is what I think the porpuse of the game was:
*Since it is a walk simulator (and I'm not very familiar with them) I found some kind of peace but the lack of communication/interaction made me feel awkward and very dissapointed since the multiplayer option never worked for me. - you might find peace but in a weird way.
*The story... doesn't even have one. - maybe that's what the game wants you to do, to build/imagine your own. (then you better read a book or play Minecraft, or something like that).
*Music is okay and it indeed relaxes you but there's always something else that relaxes you.
*The controls.. arghh... just terrible.

<<Games like Lifeless Planet and Proteus have much more to offer, they lead you where they want to, and they indeed give you different feelings such as fear or excitement, Bientôt l'été gives you freedom, gives you a choice.. but after that, nothing gets to happen>>

(If you still want to try it) Buy it on sale, or never buy it at all.

Waste of money. Maybe I couldn't figure out how to play it but long story short...It's not a game. It's a nice artpiece if you could understand it. Also, it runs on multiple people playing from different places and since its not a widely played game, a lot of the time there isn't much for you to do or explore in the game.

While all games are inherently art, this game is moreso a piece of art than it is a game. Very abstract yet hauntingly beautiful.

i highly recommend Bientôt l'été, the game about escaping the frightening low-FPS land of Outside and holing yourself up in a box-like shack, "Waiting for a partner" as the game itself puts it, staring daggers at a wooden chessboard, too apathetic to drink or even smoke. I don't wear a hoodie when I do that IRL tho so i'm giving it a thumbs-down until this immersion-breaking oversight is rectified.

Candle light and soul forever,
A dream of you and me together,
Say you believe it, say you believe it,
Free your mind of doubt and danger,
Be for real don't be a stranger,
We can achieve it, we can achieve it
Come a little bit closer baby, get it on, get it on,
'Cause tonight is the night when two become one
I need some love like I've never needed love before
(wanna make love to ya baby)
I had a little love, now I'm back for more
(wanna make love to ya baby)
Set your spirit free, it's the only way to be
Silly games that you were playing, empty
Words we both were saying,
Let's work it out boy, let's work it out boy,
Any deal that we endeavour,
Boys and girls feel good together
Take it or leave it,
Take it or leave it
Are you as good as I remember baby, get it on, get it on,
'Cause tonight is the night when two become one
I need some love like I've never needed love before
(wanna make love to ya baby)
I had a little love, now I'm back for more (wanna make love to ya baby)
Set your spirit free, it's the only way to be
Be a little bit wiser baby, put it on, put it on,
'Cause tonight is the night when two become one
I need some love like I've never needed love before
(wanna make love to ya baby)
I had a little love, now I'm back for more (wanna make love to ya baby)
I need some love like I've never needed love before
(wanna make love to ya baby)
I had a little love, now I'm back for more (wanna make love to ya baby)
Set your spirit free, it's the only way to be
It's the only way to be

[Repeat to end]

To be fair, at least the game looks good...sort of.

This game is the very definition of "pretentious indie game", and people seem to have the term pretentious seriously confused by calling something like "Braid" a pretentious game, but I don't believe "Braid" was pretending to be a profound art piece, it WAS a profound art piece that was a great puzzler at heart. This is not what Bientôt l'été is.

Bientôt l'été is pretentious. But it is not just pretentious, it's a bearly unplayable mess that attempts to be something interesting and somewhat profound and fails miserably. The whole message in Bientôt l'été is love...I think. This game does do something right at least, and that it makes you guess the message that the game is attempting to send to you, but the message is probably something not nearly as interesting as you probably think.

And when I said that the game looks kinda good? It doesn't actually look even good. The textures look bland, the character models look so boring and the entire world is so f*cking restrictive. You can't go anywhere but this mysterious house where you can play chess with some poor b*stard who actually purchased this pile of horse intestines.

There's also almost nothing to do here. All you CAN do, is choose your gender, walk around a boring beach enviroment that changes for no reason, and go inside this badly modeled house to play Chess someone that picked the opposite gender that you chose. And yes, this is online, and it sucks. There is absolutely no point in playing Chess since you can very easily break the game. Other than those boring objectives, there's nothing to do!

And if you can believe it, this game is made by some of the staff that were behind the creation of another game that was also artsy, and that game was called "Journey". This must've been made as a joke game.

This game is a pretentious, unplayable waste of both your time and money...that's why I don't recommend this game

This is a very aestetic experience. Most people would'nt even call it a game. But because it says to review your game... I am.

This game provides the player with a soothing soundtrack and very pleasing visuals that are easy on the eyes. You don't have to worry about your eye balls rotting from your head while playing this because it's a low light beach scenario.
This "game" is based around either a male or female character (the sex is user option) who is looking for lost love or maybe they have given up on it? and they scower the beach for lines of dialogue to use in a game of chess along with chess board pieces.

I reccomend this game because it is a stress reliever. It isn't a demanding game and you can just do it without really thinking. It's very pleasing.

When the highlight of your time spent playing a game is finding a bench on an empty beach that you can sit on, you know it's time to move on...

If you want to chill out and look at space while floating in space, or chill out watching space on an oceanside bench, or induce a sense of isolation and peacefulness in yourself, spending a little time exploring this game is a nice way to do that. I didn't bother with the collecting of things that you can do in the game, I just wandered around the beach and unwound for a while.

It reminded me of how when I first played Ocarina of Time, I just spent thirty minutes watching the sun rise and fall, and the specks of light travel around the Kokiri village. Or when I'd play the first Mass Effect game and just stop driving the Mako for a moment and just sit still, staring at the planet hanging overhead with the great big chunk taken out of it. This is a game to just indulge in a beautiful wide vista and the feelings that inspires.

One crticique I do have is that the controls were a bit clumsier than I'd like. Sometimes I'd get thrown out of appreciating the environment because I'd get stuck or have trouble turning around.

Personally, I'd happily pay for something like this again but with smoother controls and a variety of environments to explore. Wow, if I could just wander the settings of Xenoblade Chronicles for example, without getting stabbed in the face by a Mechon, that would be lovely. I'd love an exploration game just about travelling around an amazing world like that.

Sometimes you want to save the world. Sometimes you just want to feel something and look out into the vastness of space.

It is so artsy that you can finish this game in 15 minutes or less. Storywise, I dunno really as the plot seemed too short to comprehend and failed to have some sort of resolution at the end that was appealing.
