D&D: Chronicles of Mystara is THE best arcade game you can get on Steam right now (until they give us some Super Turbo love ;)). If you ever wondered what an arcade version of Diablo might feel like, the two games contained in this package have all the answers for you.
Rivalling proper homeconsole games from "back then" in terms of replayability, secrets and items and combining FinalFight/StreetFighter-esque battles with a hint of roleplaying and the very strong Dungeons & Dragons license makes for an incredible arcade-romp that still holds up today. Both games aren't without flaws, though and depending on your willingness to accept that these games are roughly 20 years old you might find them to be somewhat lacking in comfort or in catering to a computer-audience. A Microsoft controller or even better a proper Arcadestick are highly recommended for getting the most out of this.
The actual conversion to modern OS' is a bit of a mixed bag unfortunately, the filters are downright useless and the scaling does a poor job of maintaining the correct pixel aspect ratio. Cutting AttractMode and Intro from the games is a downright ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ choice and very weird (older "for matching service"-titles by CAPCOM offered these in a seperate menu for your viewing pleasure). And talking about poor decisions; allowing me to unlock artwork is great, however - I'd prefer you give me the (incredibly awesome) artwork related to the games and not some MonsterManual ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ from D&D 3.5 (which isn't even looking like the stuff in the game, cause the game is based on a older edition (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons by TSR)).
Oh, and basically the majority of the "HD" stuff they tacked on looks incredibly crappy. Why exactly did we need ♥♥♥♥ty renders in the Item collection? Still, being able to coop-online on one of the greatest 4-player arcade machines with no shady MAME-business going on and for everyone to enjoy is much appreciated by me. So getting this is a no-brainer, really.
Hopefully this marks the beginning of more great titles from CAPCOMs glorious arcade legacy hitting Steam!
