Another badly ported console title. Arcade = gamepad, sure, I get it and I have one, but why _pretend_ supporting flightsticks in the first place? If you're gonna support stick then do it properly.
The level of difficulty seems to vary randomly from map to map and eventually you'll get stuck as I am, surrounded by a swarm of migs which all seem to get a lock on you simultaneously... I don't care how good you are I don't think you can shake 7 missiles coming at you with 1 second intervals.
This title had potential, but some exec somewhere had to ruin it by rushing it out, because that's how it feels like, unfinished.

Kind of found out a new fetish. Turned out that I enjoyed watching jet fighters bleeding.

LPT: just ignore everything that isn't a jet fighter mission.

controls are terrible, dfm makes this really bad. don't get me wrong i don't hate ace combat. i use to play the first and 2nd one but that stuff i mentioned ruined it for me. i did enjoy being a gunner in a helicopter. maybe one day i might give this another look but it was really annoying.

At first I was skeptical; due to hearing about all of the present bugs leaving this game somewhat "unplayable" but I'm extremely glad I decided to try this game. Although it glitched for me only once during the first turret mission, it fixed itself upon a mission restart. After that initial experience, the game hasn't glitched again and is proving to be one of my favorite titles in the Steam library. The dogfight mode alone provides enough thrill to satisfy me as a long-time fan of wartime flight simulators.
The Apache flights add a whole new element of fun and provide a close sense of realism that you could only find in a real wartime experience. Whether it be clearing ground support, or chasing down enemy jets; this game is sure to please (provided you know what you're getting your self into.)

Good game - recommended.

However levels are faaar too long. I just want to pick up the game and play for 5 minutes. I don't want to be playing for 30 minutes wondering when i can exit the game without saving progress.

Also the controls aren't good. Star Conflict has the best combat controls. All controls should be like star conflicts.

DFM... what more can I say? The DFM mode ruins gameplay. The game is great if it wasn't for the horrid DFM mode that the game insists you have to use in nearly every engagement. Apart from the horrible DFM experience the game is OK and true to the orignals.

Unfortunatley DFM is that bad I can't bare to play and it would much rather play previous release of ace combat. Very disappointed to say the least.

I actually enjoyed the parts where you fly a fighter jet and the parts where you are the gunner on a helicopter where pretty exciting. And then they put me into a chopper and the game just sucked. The controls are terrible, especially compared to the dozen of other chopper games I've played throughout the years. It uses a control method that some early 3-D shooters used in the early nineties where you turn by pushing the aiming reticule against the side of the screen. Off course if you want to aim at something that is now in the middle of your screen you'll have to turn the reticule all the way back. And making a quick turn is impossible so you can't strafe around a target while aiming at it. There is a reason why only a few games ever used this control method and why it rarely makes a come back nowadays (I think there are a few WII games that use this control method, which kinda proves my point) ... it sucks big time. Since there are no alternative controls for the chopper and you can't skip the chopper missions those missions ruin the entire game for me. The developers can't claim they implemented these controls because they wanted to make them more realistic. Either choppers have their machine guns mounted on the sides and the aiming reticule would then move with the chopper (unlike in this game). Or the machine gun can swivel and aim independently from the chopper (in an Apache helicopter for instance the machine gun follows the head movements of the pilot and will aim where he is looking) which also doesn't match with the controls in the game.

Arguably the worst game in the series, but this is a 'spin-off' title and for what it's worth, it was pretty decent, even on PS3/Xbox 360. Hopefully Ace Combat 7 is a return to the tried and true formula that was loved by most Ace Combat players.

From being a big fan of the Ace Combat series during the original Playstation days I was very much looking forward to a new Ace Combat but hoping for something different, and boy I wasn't let down. The story is a little bit dull but most stories are in this series but the ability to fly different aircraft is a welcome change for me the dog fights and it's insane close up cameras are awesome and really never get tiresome (for me anyway) if your after a fast paced one moment to a good aircraft shooter the next then this game is up your ally

This is not Ace Combat 04, 05, or Zero.

This barely even FEELS like an Ace Combat game.

If you play this you will spend 95% of the game struggling with the fact that the game is designed to try and force you into D.F.M. which is nothing more than a rail shooter chase scene with other planes to try and shoot them down. If you don't, you're going to learn real fast that the enemy planes can pull more ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t moves than HAWX or the movie STEALTH.

I want to like this game. And I can...if I consider it an airborne version of a Call Of Duty game. Not as an Ace Combat.

Here's to hoping Ace Combat 7 does a better job since it's going back to the StrangeReal world.

Occasionally feels like the original ace combats but the dog fighting mode ruins the experience. Also, this is one hell of an annoying game. I've nevber found the original ace combats irritating but the endless switching back and forward in dog fighting mode and the seemingly endless missle alarm that never shuts up gets old fast. You will constantly have someone on your tail, it wont matter what you do, it is there whether you pull tight turns or not, the threat is constant.

It's a shame because I love the ace combat games, but this is shockingly awful.

It will fail you over and over and over on many of the missions because you accidentally 'released slight pressure on the accelrate trigger when chasing an icbm' or didn't 'drop a bomb EXACTLY where the ghame wants you to'. There will be no warning, just fail.

AVOID, IT'S COMPLETE TRASH.

I've always been a HUGE Ace Combat fan. to this day, I hold that Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War is one of the best games I have ever played. But this.... wow. It was alarmingly clear that they looked towards Call of Duty for inspiration. let me explain.

in every previous game, the story took place in a fictional world. on top of that, the protaganist was always the silent type and was never truly identified or shown, allowing you to more easily insert yourself into the story and get immersed.

in this game, you play as American McCheeseburger who's been dreaming of his own death over the skies of miami. as you can imagine and predict, that's a spoiler for a portion of the last mission. to make everything worse, the entire game is PAINFULLY predictable, playing into the "surprise! Russians are evil! SO ORIGINAL" trope. The story involves every single war cliche you can think of. Russians are evil, you're a war veteran, the woman suddenly loves you at the end for some reason, your wingman takes a missile for you, the Russians have WMDs and attack D.C. with them, etc. it's so poorly thought through that it was truly difficult to care in the slightest about any of it.

Most of the gameplay isn't... horrible, I guess? the DFM takes away 90% of the control you're given and they force it on you throughout the game. the entirety of the end of game is so horrifically scripted, but the dogfights between are fun and true to the original games. (assuming you never use DFM that is) my main complaint is that they simulate difficulty by having the AI straight up cheat. they can pull manuevers insanely faster than you ever can, they have unlimited flares with no cooldown for them, they can straight up ignore your cannon making them impossible to damage until the game says they can be.

but the cardinal sin of it all is that they introduced regenerating health for your aircraft. this was never in any of the previous games. not having it forced you to return to base and think about what you're doing more carefully. in this, you can just avoid damage until your plane suddenly decides it's not broken anymore.

At the end of it: Go play Ace Combat 5. you will VERY quickly see why the Ace Combat communtity shuns this game.

This is an arcade style shooter and not a serious flight sim. So to enjoy this you must forget your previous encounter with the ace combat franchise in terms of gameplay mechanics and even the story telling. This is made like a interactive movie and you are in the ride with limited steering options because the whole thing moves on tracks at high speed. This is the curse and blessing of this game depending how you look at it. It gets hectic and exhilarating but it does not have great characters or story or immersion. I myself like the action which is frantic. Story wise this is as bad as the Michael Bay movies get... The cheesy Russian terrorists to mess up the whole world kind of plot I personally could not care less about. It's not even told in an engaging way, even at a time when terrorism is actually a hot potato right now. I feel like game developers swap back and forth with the washout writers that come from hollywood when they can't make it there, and vice versa. Seriously gaming in general is on a steep declining slope in terms of quality of content. Good graphics don't alone make a good game. However this game for me as I'm a casual gamer,is okay in terms of the over the top, Top Gun'esque action. This is like the 'independence day' version of aerial combat. It's not good storywise or by characters, but action leaves your heart pounding and liking it when brains are in need of relaxing and crave for just stupid action for sake of action.

Ive had it in my library for a while, and i thought id replay it after playing Ace Combat on the Xbox. Its not overly realstic, and its really fun especially in the Dogfight mode and when you shoot an aircraft down. The camera will follow it, making an epic little scene of fire and fun. All in all, for £10, its a really good little arcade timewaster. I love it so far, just wished the multiplayer was a little more active. Ill give it a 9/10

Well I have a mixed opinion on this particular addition to the frachise. I have always been an avid Ace Combat fan with Ace Combat 6 Fires Of Liberation being my favourite (Xbox 360). Assault Horizon just does not hold the same feeling of fun that ace combat 6 offered. The forced use of dogfights while cool in concept just becomes annoying and less feeling like you are able to fly as you wish like in ace combat 6. Although that being said I still think it worth a play as the game still shines in some areas such as cinematic plane finishers and some dogfights can be pretty intense as the game goes on. Performance wise this game ran flawlessly in full 1920x1080 on a 6GB GTX 980Ti at a locked 144fps (144hz monitor). So no issues with performance.

7/10 All in all worth a try but don't expect it to be like how you have previously experienced the franchise.

I was first excited to get this game but then when I started it up the real horror started. I don't understand why it is so hard for companies to make functioning controls. Shouldn't that be the most important aspect of a game. Even with controller support I don't even see how the developers thought this was a good idea.

Cool game if you are a fan of being a gunner fopr a helicopter, besides taht the rest of the game is ♥♥♥♥. Terrbile plot line, terrible handleing of aircraft, and the game is just austistic in alot of ways. you are more likely to die from hittign the ground cause your autistic game won't allow your plane to do a basic manuever then from being killed by an enemy. You have ♥♥♥♥ing frienldy fighters, but they don't go ♥♥♥♥. It's also way to anal about its story line, forcing you to kill certian aircraft ina certian way. Missiles in the game are almost as ♥♥♥♥ as the game itself. My review, it's the WarZ( Infestation Survival Stories) of combat flight sim. If you dont understand that reference, then go read the Steam reviews for that game.

Hard to recommend but I like the game and enjoy playing it!
Well after 4 hours I think that I am able to write a review. The story is about some bad guys who want to blew up the world and you have to stop them... but you do not play games like these for an 'amazing' story right?

You play it to blew things up... and by that I mean a lot of things! The best thing about that.. it is pretty fun!
The game controlls are at the beginning a little bit clunky, but after a while you getting used to it and after setting things up in the input-config file to enable the mouse support things aren't that bad.
(You should also create a 'NAMCO' Folder inside your documents, otherwise the game won't save any settings!)

Flying and fighting in a plane makes a lot of fun and it is pretty hard to fail. While blewing things up the soundtrack keeps pushing you so motivation shouldn't be a problem.

Edit: The helicopter missions are annoying but there are luckily there aren't much of them & Missions are take a little bit too much time..

The graphics are for a PC Port. pretty good. (No eye-candy but therefore exist other games right?)

I recommend to get this game during a sale for 5€ or 5$ or whatever currency you are using.

Review may change in details while I continue the game.

I have been a fan of Ace Combat since the original and I hate to say I would probably avoid this title. Ace Combat Assault Horizon, unlike most of the other Ace Combat games, has real world locations which is a nice addition to the series and you can now pilot some helicopters. The developers unfortunately added "Dogfight Mode" and "Air Strike Mode" which turns the game into an on the rails quick time event. It is an unforgivably terrible addition to the series and cannot be avoided as many objectives require the player to use this mode. Some players might be able to work with this game mode and still appreciate Ace Combat's attention to detail and diverse plane selection, I however could not; preferring to play the older titles and hoping on the newer ones.

I've finally found a sense of accomplishment after finishing Ace Combat Assault Horizon, but this didn't come without a price. This was probably one of the most painful action games I've struggled through. The first struggle I had was buying this game when it still had GFWL included which is probably why I never bothered to finish it until recently. Thankfully that intrusive DRM has been removed and the game is now exclusively Steam based with achievements. The second struggle was painfully getting through the almost infinite number of enemies during each mission.

Now all the mission objectives in this game are great and fun. I loved the story and the gameplay is easy to enjoy. The variety of jets and bombers available to fly is also satisfying. The biggest issue for me was the sheer number of enemies during each mission. It made each mission feel excessively long and excessively repetitive. The fact that it takes multiple missiles to kill each enemy didn't help matters either. I get the arcadeness of the game and that aspect actually made it more enjoyable over a realistic flight simulator. But enemy after enemy after enemy after enemy after enemy...you get the point. There is a moment during each mission where I found myself asking, "Good Lord, when is this going to end?"

Ok so that is pretty much all I didn't like. That aspect left some battle wounds and those scars will likely never fully heal, but I loved the game overall. The story is excellent. There are a wonderful assortment of mission types and objectives and it is generally a fun game to play.

... still looks pretty good several years after release - a great arcade / flight / dogfighting game with a cheesy 80s-style throwaway storyline to go with it... still controls well, no issues (watch out for that machine gun section at the start - a bit of a bug means you can't control it whilst in the chopper - but just let it play through and the rest of the game is fine) - definitely a series to watch if it moves to VR... well worth a punt for a couple of quid...

I don't see the frustration. The game works fine, the scenarios and gameplay are magnificent, it's a game with jets. How can you argue with blowing ♥♥♥♥ up back to the stone age? So what if it's not like other Ace Combats. That's the name of the game, it just happens to be newer. It's great!
