Hotfix 2015-07-01

First hotfix for yesterday's major update is out, addressing some of the more critical issues.

Please find the changelog here:

  • Fixed a bug with prediction causing massive lag with remote cars in multiplayer.
  • Fixed cars not being located to their start grid positions in multiplayer.
  • Fixed cars sometimes flying to space and through ground.
  • Fixed rendering being shattered after alt+tab in DX9.

Update 2015-06-30

As you have probably noticed, the latest update for Wreckfest was rolled out earlier today. The update marks a major milestone for the game since it's the first time that you will be able to experience our improved physics model as well as the new physically-based renderer. Some of you will be happy about the changes we've made, some unhappy, but please be aware that you should not expect a finalized product: there's still a lot of work ahead of us and this update is only a foundation on which the game will be build. Because of this, we'd very much like to hear what you like and especially what you don't. By giving us feedback, you can help us tune the direction of the game and strike a perfect balance.

We're aware of the technical issues that many of you are currently experiencing, and we're doing our best to sort everything out as soon as we can. We very much appreciate all the bug reports we've received so far, so please do keep the coming! When reporting issues, please remember to give us as much information about it (for example, reproduction steps) as well as your system specifications. One of the more critical ones we're aware of is the issue with the experimental x64 build crashing on some systems, and we're investigating the issue to have it fixed swiftly; in the meantime please use the 32-bit build.

Unique Racing Experience

First and foremost, we’re building a FUN racing game with PERSONALITY. It’s all about the stuff that really matters: varied tracks, cool cars, and the defining once-in-the-lifetime moments that can be achieved only with true-to-life physics simulation. If you’re familiar with our previous games, you already know what we’re aiming at: exhilarating racing action with sophisticated physics and damage modeling, only this time we’re upping the ante on almost every front. This is the game we envisioned way back in the early 2000s, only re-imagined for today’s technology and gaming standards.

Awesome Cars

The cars are old, cheap, banged up, patched together, rusty… just awesome! In short, our cars ooze with STYLE. You won’t find anything like them in other racing games. We’ve got variety, as well: everyone loves the old American heavy-hitters from the muscle car era, but we’re not neglecting the fun little European and Asian cars from the long-gone decades either. The best part is that you’ll be taking them apart and building them back up again in your garage; the career is as much about your garage and your project cars as it is about racing.

Exciting Engine

Our in-house ROMU engine is a hell-bent beast that's precision-engineered for high-speed, breakneck racing. We have also already implemented fully deformable soft body car damage, meaning that the cars will react to damage in a very tangible, convincing way. While we're focused on action, motorsport authenticity is not forgotten, either. To that end our engine is simulating vehicle dynamics in a very sophisticated fashion. Rolling resistances, casters and slip angles are definitely not ancient Greek to us, and you as the player will be the one benefiting from our expertise.

EARLY ACCESS FEATURES

The current Early Access release contains four playable cars and a number of tracks, showcasing both white-knuckle track racing and explosive demolition derby action with 24 cars that will give you taste of things to come. During the coming months we’re going to give the game a lot of polish as well as implement many new exciting features, and all Early Access supporters have a unique opportunity to get involved in the development of the title!


We’ve also giving a playable Technology Sneak Peek 2.0 to all our Early Access supporters. The sneak peek features a playground that we use internally to test various features various like car damage and environment destruction. Version 2.0 includes new destructive machinery, more dynamic stuff to blow up, spectacular stunts and an awesome physics cannon that we use to play with our physics engine. With the physics cannon you too will now have a chance to cause mayhem to heart’s content by launching missiles, throwing stuff around and destroying the environment as well as the cars!

UPCOMING FEATURES

Wreckfest is currently in early Pre-Alpha stage, and the Early Access version is going to serve as a basis on which we will continue building the game based on your feedback on what works and what doesn't. Throughout the Early Access phase we're going to gradually add more content and new features to the game, with some of the most important key features planned being:

New update has ruined this game in my eyes. The game has nowhere near the active destruction anymore than it used to which made the game fun when in destruction derby and wrecking racing modes. The new handling model is "Realistic" bu has sucked all of the fun out of this game, this stems from the racing modes to the derby content.

The changes to derby mode might just be the worst thing of all. The other issues I can ignore and wait for a fix, however, the new derby mode has no balance and is no fun at all anymore. Your car takes more damage during crashes than any opponent does and the car deformation looks worse than it ever has before. The deformation of the cars has been downplayed to the point that it may aswell not be there anymore, the Flatout games in my opinion now have more satisfying demolition derby gameplay with better car deformation and better controls. I also believe that anyone without a racing wheel setup is thrown to the wayside, as steering and accelaration controls with the new handling engine are not up to par.

Over all, I Adore this game. But I simply cannot recommend this game anymore after this most recent update. Thats not even mentioning that we waited 9 months for this update to go live and all it did was suck any sence of fun out of this game and make it a boring sim game with extremely poor performance and lack luster gameplay. Maybe if the developers provide a rollback feature to allow the users who dislike the new handling model to play the FUN version of the game, I will play this game again. But if this game carries on in its current direction then I cannot folow it.

Best of luck to the developers on this project and I must thank them for the 100 hours of fun that I had leading up to this point.

EDIT - after the hotfix today 01/07/2015 a few of my key issues with the title have been addressed. The Alt+Tab crashing issue has been fixed and the awful shaky camera has recieved an option in the menu to be turned down or off completely. Overall I still cannot recommend this game, however, the developers are cleary working hard to get the game up and running again and the latest hotfix has helped to make the game more playable. The performance of the game is still a joke with "optimisation" being praised as having crowds and other background objects removed to save memory, although I still see no difference in performance from the previous versions on my rig. If the fixes become more frequent and the developers start to communicate with their players more often then I will consider changing my review of this game. This is a good step in the right direction, keep at it!

The new engine is terrible, i loved the game so far, and to me, you killed the whole point of the game, the fun.

You had a nice engine, sure it needed some tweaks, but why change it for something like this, specially when it takes 9/10 months to get an update, i really don't get it.
To me it will never be close as good as what it felt like before, and with the rate updates are coming ...

I never believed the game will ever be at a finished state, and i don't care tbh, but there you just made a huge step backward.

This was the only game of the style, it was fun, fast, you could race, derby, crashes were epic, clean races too, there is nothing left, clean races are boring as nothing is happening around, this is way slower, cars feels WAY WAY heavier so no more flips, this is just boring.

It looks like people happy with this are missing the whole point of the game, and sadly, the developers too.

No seriously, why would you ever take 9 months to change something that was quite good and start all over from scratch with this terrible one, instead of working on what you had to make it even better ?

Early Access Review
Don't try this in its current state, wait for an update or two but keep an eye on it! It was the most enjoyable car game I played in a decade before the last update finally arrived and I have faith in Bugbear to sort it out and deliver something great in the end.

The problems are mostly of technical nature at the moment: the networking is all messed up and the game is inferior to its previous state graphically and performance wise; but these issues can be solved in a couple of updates.

I'm still undecided on the new physics, I really liked the middle ground between sim and arcade racer before the update, now it is much closer to realism. Driving feels good on tarmac, not so much on gravel or mud. Cars are less prone to flip or fly leading to fewer spectacular crashes. Will see how it will do on the long run.

Update after hotfix: On one hand the online component is back to being mostly OK, on the other performance took an even bigger hit - now it is nearly unplayable on my aging laptop that handled the game quite nicely before.
