Singlehandedly one of the greatest CRPGs ever made. If you have any care for Dungeons and Dragons then you need to play this game. Its based off of D&D 2nd edition rules and very faithfully creates that feeling of playing Pen and Paper Dungeons and Dragons. The story is very well written and the character customization is pretty spot on with what you expect from D&D. I'd love to see more playable races such as Gnolls, Kobolds, Tieflings, and half-dragons (or dragonborn), but that isn't required to make this a good game. The controls may take a little getting used to as the game uses a real time turn based which means pausing the battles will be common and frequent.

The UI was ruined because of their stupid forced update with their bad DLC. I can't support Beamdog.

They released an update that broke the mutliplayer as well. WHY?

Fantastic game otherwise. Why don't you purchase a physical copy, or somehow get a version of this game without the update?

I'll fix this review if I can figure out how to eliminate the UI changes.

The most defining game of the start of a generation. All other modern games pale to the scope of the Baldur's Gate series as a whole

If you have an ounce of D&D nerddom in you, buy this. Get it on sale if you can, but its worth the $20 retail too.

An RPG classic, updated with lots of ease of use and convenience tweaks, customization options, and improved modding support. (Yeah, I'm not a fan of the new 2.0 character sheet, either, but now the interface is very easily moddable, so you can change it if you want!) Story-wise it's not as developed as BG2; there's a lot of just wandering around having random encounters in the wilderness, and there's not much interaction with your party members. However, I actually prefer low-level 2nd edition D&D combat to high-level "mage chess," and there's an active modding community with plenty of ways to add NPC interaction and other enhancements to your game.

The biggest downside is that Steam makes you install updates before playing, which will break any mods you have installed and wreak havoc with your savegames using those mods. You have to backup your old modded game and launch it outside of Steam in order to keep playing. I don't know if this will get fixed in the future, but it's an important consideration if you're thinking about whether to buy BGEE from Steam or GOG.

This game put to shame so many of today so called RPG's.
If you are an RPG fan, you've got to play this marvelous game and it's sequel BG2.
Do yourself a favor and play it without a walkthrough\guide.

I always loved playing this Baldur's Gate. Since the OG in 1998 to the ones on PS2 its been my favorite RPG. Mainly because it takes place in the D&D world. And I am glad someone is trying to bring the old game back to life.

There are a lot of bugs still in this game. Not as much as the OG. As there is a lot of them fixed, and you don't need to download a ton of mods to fix it. I think what ever the last patch added however, messed the save games up. It just deleted them. Then I notice the picture was missing for those save games and you can CLICK on an invisible picture. SOMETIMES it lets you load it, most the time(like 95% of the time) it doesn't. I tried starting a new character. Saved. Went to load it. It was not there.

What I think would make this game better, is more items to choose from. Seriously beamdog, pick up a D&D players handbook, and just make more weapons. IE: Rapier, Hand Cross bow, Blow gun(useless, but still) Great Axe, Maul, just more basic stuff. More visual, hell, why not just update the rules a bit more as well, and add in more of the Lore that is in the Sword Coast(seens how they just made another expanison for D&D 5.0 based in the Sword Coast) than just the little bit that you have done and then want to charge $20.00 for.

I would still recommend this Game however. But I doubt most people want to pay 20 for a game from 98 with just some paint added to it.

This used to be one of the greatest RPGs of all time, but the new developer Beamdog has been a terrible steward of this iconic franchise.

Beamdog has made numerous unnecessary updates to the user interface and has introduced so many new bugs that the game is almost unplayable. I bought the Steam copy of this game for a nostalgic RPG we had played almost two decades ago. Instead we have struggled through numerous crashes, terrible input lag, UI bugs, items duplicating and disappearing among other issues. There are more patches coming out, but so far they have done nothing to alleviate the major issues we've encountered. Reviewing the bug report forums it seems most of these bugs are well known and have persisted for a long time.

In it's current state the game is no longer worth buying from Steam. Do yourself a favor and find a copy of the game that is prior to version 2.0.

I am playing this game here on steam for the first time, and I must say I enjoy it quite a lot, mostly for the characters, who are really colourfull, and for the story (even if it is not very original).
Still, I must say it feels a little buggy. I experienced no crash at all, but the quest indications are sometimes missing, or do only appear after accomplishment. It is a bit confusing, even if it is allways clear what I should do through dialogues or other indications.
Also, it seems impossible to change the language. First I played with english voices and french texts, but I somehow managed to get everything in english, after a patch put some voices in french (and as every french voice acting they were totally ugly).

So, I do recommend this game for those who are good at english, and like old school or story driven games, even if there are tiny bugs here and there.

PS : I play on linux, and I didn't try multiplayer mode

The UI and multiplayer in this game are completely broken and bugged to all hell, even after 3 of their latest patches. UI disappears, various functions randomly stop working among other things.

Seen a lot of negative reviews, was very hesitant to purchase the EE version of this much beloved series. Gotta say, wasn't dissapointed. The new NPCS, plethora of various new options in the UI and gameplay in general, are mostly optional and, in my opinion, a positive addition to the overall game. I've not found the game to be buggy in the least, and have not had any issues whatsoever. The enhanced edition is a welcome update and has brought life back into one of my favorite RPG series of all time. Thank you Beamdog.
