Why Early Access?

“When we started developing Heroes & Generals it was with the intention of creating a game for the gamers as much as for ourselves. The games we have been creating in the past (back in the IO Interactive days) have all been shrouded in secrecy until they were released and therefore always carried a number of things that players did not like but we were unable to change. Because it is the players that in the end plays the game we think they should have greater influence on the development.

Since the very early days of the project in 2011 (pre-alpha stage), we invited players in to play the game and have involved our community in the making of Heroes & Generals and listened to the feedback from them. So it's a natural extension of the way we develop Heroes & Generals, to also include the Steam Community, by going Early Access.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We're approaching the end of our Open Beta/Early Access phase, but it's still too soon for us to put a date on when we'll launch.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We're still tweaking, fixing bugs and adding new features to Heroes & Generals, and even though we feel that the game is now fun and quite stable, we still wish to get all things 'just right' before we call it 'launched'.

We do not plan to do a full server reset when the game launches.”

“Heroes & Generals is Free2Play. We wish to create a healthy, solid and well-balanced game and community, where you can get a great experience playing the game, no matter how much money you spend! There is already an in-game economy in place, where you earn in-game credits and warfunds for being active in the game, by playing FPS-missions and/or handling Assault Teams.

You can also buy gold, which you can use to buy practically everything, usually it give you the option of buying stuff ‘early’, so you don’t need to grind that much. We also offer a Veteran Membership to accommodate wishes of having an all-inclusive package, where you earn xp, ribbon-xp, in-game credits and warfunds at an increased rate etc.

Prices are regularly being tweaked now in Open Beta/Early Access and we will most likely still tweak prices at and after launch.”

Soviet AVS-36, new uniforms, new weapon skins, “Battle Director” and more available in just-released Xylander Update

This brand-new update brings a lot of new features – AVS-36 (and its’ bayonet) to help fight the Sturmgewehr 44 and M1/M2 carbines released in Walker, Town and Factory Map updates, XP-bonuses for War battles, credit earnings update and new “Battle Director”! The update is named ‘Xylander’ after the German Major General Wolf-Dietrich von Xylander (there are not that many people named something with X), and here’s a quick overview of the new features we’ve added for you to enjoy!

New Features
New Soviet AVS-36
In this update we’re adding the AVS-36 for the Soviet faction to help compete against the StG44 and M1/M2 Carbine. Read more about it here.

The AVS-36, the Sturmgewehr 44, the MP-40 and the M1917 Revolver can now be upgraded with new skins, plus we’re introducing an exclusive “Eisernes Kreuz” skin with an ivory handle engraved with an iron cross for the P08 Parabellum.
‘Battle Director’ giving better balanced and more fun War Battles
Staged battles are auto generated battles that are evenly balanced and fought independently of the war. War-battles are on the other hand based on the actions of the officers and generals controlling Assault Teams in the war and can sometimes be very unbalanced.

So we have introduced a ‘Battle Director‘ that identifies which battles are fun and suitable to be played. The fun battles can be joined as usual through either the matchmaker or by manually picking a battle, and the battles that are not fun will be auto-resolved by the Battle Director.

Credit earnings update coming in Xylander update.

In the upcoming Xylander update we have taken a look at the way you earn your base salary and updated it, so you now earn credits based MORE on the time you actively play the game instead of on how many battles you complete. The base salary increases as you rise in ranks and you will of course still earn credits by capping, wounding, killing and so on as usual. A small bonus is furthermore given if your faction wins the battle you participate in.


DETAILS!
We know a lot of you prefer to have more details available so here is a list of other changes that impact the credits income that we’re releasing with the Xylander update. So in short: Soldier salary is now defined as credits per sec active time. The Credit bonus you get for winning is now 10% extra credits, price and wear adjustments for weapons and price adjustments for character packs (prices reduced except for recon officers).

Its all about grinding credits...

Everything in this game costs you, granades, ammo repairs and after you have got some modifications to your weapons cost become so high that all progression halts. This is where normally you could in free to play games buy a premium membership and be done with it, but noooo... Not in this game. Here it only brings you 15% more credits and leaves you with the option to spend even more money to buy guns and upgrades with real money. This game is a text book example of pay to win game.

This game has a good foundation that could be something great, but is terribly executed.

It is perhaps one of the grindiest games to have ever been created. There's a double-dip grind that players are forced to endure if they want to see ANY semblance of variety or nuance in their gameplay. First, players have to grind experience to unlock ranks which grant access to different roles, weapons, vehicles, and gear. This grind makes a snail's pace look blazing fast by comparison. So, a new player will basically be stuck with the same bottom tier weapons, in the same role, with the same bottom tier gear, for a very, very long time.

On top of that, there is the ribbon system grind that consists of weapon/gear-specific grinding--the more you use a particular weapon, for instance, the more experience you will get for that weapon's respective ribbon. This applies to every weapon, and every vehicle. This is how you unlock mods for that weapon/vehicle. This grind isn't the worst on its own, but it does still contribute to the overall barrier to entry.

Next, there's the credit grind. Your credit earnings scale with your rank; the higher your rank, the more credits you get per match. Everything costs credits--weapons, mods, vehicles, grenades, gear, promotions, new soldiers, etc. And it's all very, very expensive relative to your earnings. What's more, all your gear, including your weapon mods, incurs repair costs for even the smallest of uses, and ammo needs to be replenished constantly. This means your already pathetic credit earnings are going to be even less rewarding the more you actually participate in a given match. A game that penalizes you for playing--novel idea. And there's no meaningful way to earn credit bonuses for playing well--like, if you get a crap-ton of kills and minimal deaths in a match, it doesn't matter. In fact, all that means is you used your weapon a lot, and expended a lot of ammo, so it probably ended up costing you more in the long run.

All of this combined produces a slow, tedious, monotonous, unrewarding, unsatisfying experience to say the very least. Meanwhile, you'll be enduring all of this on the same handful of rather poorly designed maps (they don't even have spawn-camp-protection integrated into the map design, and you will be spawn camped fairly often), with virtually no variety in the gameplay. You'll be put into regularly imbalanced teams where one side has more players than the other, which means the matches tend to be incredibly one-sided, and over befoer you have a chance to do much of anything. You'll be against players that have access to more and better gear options because they've payed for them, and/or have been playing much longer. It's simply not fun 9 matches out of 10, and what fun there is in that 10th match isn't even that great.

In addition the graphical fidelity is poor--the game looks dated, and the aesthetic quality is severely lacking--everything is faded, dull, drab, grey, unimpressive at best and a strain on the eyes at worst.

The sound quality also sucks quite a bit. The only half-decent sound effect in the game is the character's whistle. Guns sound nothing like guns. Explosions sound distorted and muffled. Vehicles sound like lawnmowers inside of tin cans. It's simply all bad.

The game also doesn't handle or feel very good. Jumping feels as though you're jumping on the moon. You can only sprint for about 2 seconds before you inexplicably run out of breath. Getting stuck on hidden collision geometry is common. Vehicle handling is ♥♥♥♥-poor. Firing on a moving target is an exercise in frustration because of the way hit detection works. You can literally have someone standing right in front of you, shoot them point blank and inexplicably miss because they were strafing to the side, and the netcode sucks. Also, if you and the enemy shoot each other at the same time, your shot will often never go off or be recognized by the game.

And the list just keeps going, and going.

In summation, overall this game is garbage, and over the months it hasn't shown any signs of improving in any substantial way.

I would love this game if every piece of equipment didnt require either paying for it or grinding for eight hours, but unfortunately it does. The game couldnt be more obvious about being money hungry if it tried, and it suffers because of it. They should take a page from the soviet faction, do a Stalinesque purge of the development team, and hire a competent crew.

Was a great game until they made it pay-to-play. one huge thing is the fact that you cant play the full game until you are a level 5 which may seem easy but its not. if you lose a battle it doesnt matter how good you did it gives you ♥♥♥♥ xp. if you win a match and do good you might get some xp. but it is extremely hard to get weapons when it costs way more than it should to get a simple bolt action rifle. oh and should i mention that your weapon breaks, which is an awesome mechanic until you have to pay even more money to repair it. but i wont be playing the game again untill i see they fixed the rigged system in it. to where i and my friends can play without having to pay money

It was not all that bad a year or so ago. Then a few updates came out. Things changed. In my opinion the best thing about this game is the camouflage which snipers can acquire. Other than that the title has turned into an arcade.
> Absence of realism (became the deal breaker for me)
> Kill cam, which can be removed only with a ribbon that is incredibly hard to get and will take dozens of hours time.
> The amount of bullets one has to put into enemie's torso in order to kill him is incredibly upsetting.
> It was (perhaps still is) not uncommon to recieve a head shot by a fighter plane.
> Machine guns are very inaccurate and seem a much worse choice compared to any other kind of weapon. Even though a machine gun is supposed to be a very dangerous weapon. In this game using one is mostly a suicide.
> Maps become repetitive.
> Mish-mash of variety of tanks. Many of which never faced one another on a field of battle during the war, and that greatly breaks the immersion and disbalances the game.
It also feels like the game could be better optimised.

However, this title has a potential of offering good fun. It takes some getting used to. Some of the points I have listed will change as a player earns xp points and upgrades their weapons. While unrealistic there are loads of cool machines and tanks and weapons to try out. This game is free so nothing should stand in one's way to give it a shot.
