What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“When we started developing Heroes & Generals it was with the intention of creating a game for the gamers as much as for ourselves. The games we have been creating in the past (back in the IO Interactive days) have all been shrouded in secrecy until they were released and therefore always carried a number of things that players did not like but we were unable to change. Because it is the players that in the end plays the game we think they should have greater influence on the development.

Since the very early days of the project in 2011 (pre-alpha stage), we invited players in to play the game and have involved our community in the making of Heroes & Generals and listened to the feedback from them. So it's a natural extension of the way we develop Heroes & Generals, to also include the Steam Community, by going Early Access.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We're approaching the end of our Open Beta/Early Access phase, but it's still too soon for us to put a date on when we'll launch.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We're still tweaking, fixing bugs and adding new features to Heroes & Generals, and even though we feel that the game is now fun and quite stable, we still wish to get all things 'just right' before we call it 'launched'.

We do not plan to do a full server reset when the game launches.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We're in the end of our Open Beta phase, preparing for launch.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Heroes & Generals is Free2Play. We wish to create a healthy, solid and well-balanced game and community, where you can get a great experience playing the game, no matter how much money you spend! There is already an in-game economy in place, where you earn in-game credits and warfunds for being active in the game, by playing FPS-missions and/or handling Assault Teams.

You can also buy gold, which you can use to buy practically everything, usually it give you the option of buying stuff ‘early’, so you don’t need to grind that much. We also offer a Veteran Membership to accommodate wishes of having an all-inclusive package, where you earn xp, ribbon-xp, in-game credits and warfunds at an increased rate etc.

Prices are regularly being tweaked now in Open Beta/Early Access and we will most likely still tweak prices at and after launch.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We encourage the players to participate in discussions in our forum: http://forum.heroesandgenerals.com/

When you write feedback about the game, remember to try and explain your reasons. Constructive criticism will help us build a better game for you.”

Upcoming Map Makeover: Encounter

The first in a series of map remakes we want to present to you, is also the first map you play in the game – The Depot Encounter. It went through a lot of changes, which are sure to revive the gameplay and make the battles more interesting.

As you can see on the picture, the Encounter Map got a lot of additional structures, which make the battle more dynamic. First and foremost the wall with barb wire around the Depot, will force you to approach via one of the many trenches or other openings. To facilitate trench gameplay, the Eastern Spawn Area has been moved to the trench side of the Depot.

Numerous sneaky entries are perfect for surprise attacks and force the defenders to be on their toes. Crates, sandbags and other objects will serve as cover and enable you to move through the cross-fire. Keep your head down and try to find the perfect positions.
The radio is now positioned right outside of the Depot, in plain sight and the Control Point Area is larger than before. The fight for holding the Depot is now more open and rapidly paced than ever before.

In the picture below, you can see how the Capture Point Area has been enlarged. All the green tinted terrain is still part of the Capture Area.

We have gone through a massive makeover of all existing maps, adding spawn protection on all maps, new deploy rules for Assault maps, larger Control Point areas, better looking terrain and vegetation. All this will be released in the upcoming ‘Garman’ update.

Map Makeover coming with Garman Update

The Garman - "Map Makeover" update brings a thorough remake of all maps. We will show you the existing refurbished maps during the coming weeks, one post at a time and today we will concentrate on what remaking includes and an extra about the changes to the Encounter Map.

Remake – What does it mean?

Better looking Terrain and Vegetation
Remaking a map contains several steps and purposes of changes. Revising the terrain is one of them, for the benefit players. It basically contains cleaning up terrain for better appearance and enables re-evaluation of the map balancing. You will notice that the maps look and feel much better and will therefore be a treat to play on.

Spawn Protection
The Deploy Zones all have a new Spawn Protection system. As long as players stay within the Deploy Zones after the deploy, they will be invisible to the enemy. Note that as soon as you shoot, your invisibility will vanish.

Control Points
The control point areas get a new design, which does not only define the borders more clearly, but also makes for more dynamic gameplay. All control point areas on Skirmish, Encounter and Assault maps are now enlarged and have distinct enclosures, which can be used tactically as cover. These changes ensure more action around the control points and make it easier for new players to recognize objectives and join in the fight for control.

Objects, Crates and Restructuring
Some maps have been changed more than others, but you will notice that all maps gained structures, especially around the control points. In the course of creating more dynamic control point battles, crates and available vehicles have been placed in various areas around the control points and the radios are now outside of the buildings. They also have been given a wider range, so your teams' presence will be noticed more swiftly. You will also notice increased details, which bring the game to life and bring a story to the locations you are fighting for.

In the upcoming days we will post in further detail, how the individual maps changed, so make sure to check in.

The last time I played this game I splurged all over my keyboard, so I was unable to play due to the keys sticking. Ironically enough, the first time I played I was spamming SHIFT in hopes to SHIFT into dank meme overdrive but I was ♥♥♥♥ blocked by sticky keys. So, both times, in different scenarios, sticky keys prevented me from enjoying my favorite game. If i had to put a price tag on this game, it'd be approximately a small loan of a million dollars. I once drove to mcdonald's drunk and asked them if they wanted to play heroes and generals with me. to this day, i'm still banned from my local starbucks for splurging on their tables while playing heroes and generals with free wifi. now i have to use wifi in my local library and i'm not risking getting banned there because that's where i rent all my porn mags from and i honestly can't help it if i'm addicted to porn but want to keep the precautions of never running into sticky keys again. yours truly, rick harrison.

This is a WW2 based game that is unique from other games in that it has both a FPS (First Person Shooter) AND a RTS (Real Time Strategy) component to it. As a General you can field assault teams on the European map and defend or assault cities in order to win wars. As a Hero you can fight in the battles to win those cities. This is a great game overall though it's still in beta and has been for several years. Reto is always adding new weapons, vehicles, uniforms and other gear to the game. Currently there are 3 factions, the US, Russia and Germany. There is talk of a British faction coming out in the not too distant future. It's free to play but if you want to skip a long grind to level up your characters expect to spend some cash.

I was once under the impression that people who complained about being banned were actually people just moaning about getting caught, however having played this game for a very long period of time and giving the developers a sizeable amount of money in memberships, I logged in yesterday to find my account had been banned forever. If you are reading this review thinking "here is another cheater who got busted", consider this why would I have clocked up 3000 hours of play time not cheated to one day think to myself I know, I will risk all the hours of grinding to cheat on this game..does that make sense?? NO! It just so happened that I had purchased a very lengthy "Veteren membership" package that cost a fair amount of money before being banned. I appealled the ban but was told:

"Your Heroes & Generals account has been permanently banned for using cheats/hacks.
We are not obligated to provide you with any information as to how you were caught.
Your account will therefore remain banned.
We will not be discussing the matter with you any further."

Full conversation here: https://i.imgsafe.org/11a75be371.jpg

If you think I am lying about this, have a google this is actually how they speak to people with a genuine request for a proper investigation. All I asked for was them to look into the records and have a look because I must have been banned in error and I was also concerned that other members may also get unfairly banned, they simply do not care.

The game was pretty decent and very addictive, play it by all means, but remember this....

NEVER EVER GIVE RETO MOTO A SINGLE PENNY OF YOUR MONEY!

==========================================================

Quick Update:

I have put in 2 Paypal Cases against Reto, I do not hold any hope of getting my money back, but as long as it locks up some funds on their account while the case is open that good enough.

All the developers responses to this review came to nothing, they just want to make it look like they actually care in public but when communicating privately they do not show any sort of real willingness to help at all, it is all for show.

I have signed up for a new Heroes and generals account played around 8 hours using the same computer no changes what so ever and have no been banned, which makes me think that this ban is some sort of scam, I think they ban people who have achieved all they can in the game in the hope that they will start from scratch and invest more money. If it is not a scam and then could the case that they cannot admit that their anti cheat software doesn't work, because they would have to unban everyone.

==============================================================

Further Update:

I have won 2 Paypal Cases against Reto Moto and I have recieved my money back for that, shame thats only probably 5% of what I have given them, but something is better than nothing I guess.

I played this game back when it was new, and it was actually fun. People drove jeeps for transportation, tanks attacked fortified objectives, planes fought eachother, and snipers actually needed an aim. BUT NOW people hip fire from miles away, jeeps roadkill constantly before teamkilling, and tanks sit on their asses all day before being fragged by paratroopers. If this game hadnt gone ♥♥♥♥ enough, they threw in 2 shot kill LMGs and adjusted the "fairness" of the gameplay. Naturally, every great game grows, and with that growth comes stupid decisions and inmature players, but thats usually fixed. However, these devs HAVE TRIED, but failed and continue to do so. Im sorry but this game is not for casual OR hardcore gamers. I do suggest you try it, for this is the opinion of a single man and others may experience differently, but this is merely a warning for newcoming players.

As much as I like this game and how fun it can be, it has so many problems and setbacks that overcome any sense of fun that you might have. Before I start, I must notify I was Perman-banned for 2 letters in my profile name, although I never saw any rules regarding them when making my account (BonkSS). I played off and on for around a year, and eventually gave in and dropped 20$ in it for a Tanker, and less than 3 days later I was permabanned without notice for said name.
Even though I practically didn't even wanna play anymore, they decided to give me my 20$ back, but I had to start a new account with no badges and no progress whatsoever. Keep in mind even though with 100 hours into this game I pretty much didn't even have any progress into my old account anyways.
To add to this, they're asking players to waste their lives and money into a Beta game with countless bugs and graphical errors. (jumping out of a car and you go through the world, tanks flipping off wood fence posts, panzerfausts not killing you at pointblank range) Some of the bugs can be funny, but are a serious problem when it comes to you spending money on the game.
The game has it's ultimately fun moments, but are usually buzzkilled by bad balancing, ridiculous trolls, or camping players trying to farm xp rather than capture a point or help their teammates.
When it comes to graphics, it has an incredibly washed out pallete of colors, and an ugly haze that's usually so thick you can't see farther than 150 meters, and sometimes less than 50 meters. Aiming is a struggle at first, but you catch onto it when you correct your FOV and mouse sensitivity, but hit registers commonly fail.
They fixed how bad it was to grind for certain things, that being said it's easier to play.
This game used to be a really good one, but now we're just left with a money grabbing machine that only works if you feed it your life or your wallet. Note: I will be paying with my life to continue playing this game despite obvious problems.

This game is worst spending your money and time on. Reto is wayyyy to trigger happy when it comes to banning players. I was banned for no reason during the time I was in the middle of a move to my new house. I sent a ticket into the support center asking why I was banned and what's the proof. The Reto staff members replied with "Be aware we are not obligated to share proof of how this was found." Over the past 3 months players were coincidentally getting banned after they had talked ♥♥♥♥ about the game. Comment after comments players were getting banned for talking ♥♥♥♥. One player was banned for saying the game would never get out of beta. Another player said the game is going to turn to dust in a matter of months or so. Both were banned after they said those comments and both were never heard again. These are just a couple of reasons why you shouldn't download the game.

I've been playing this game since 2014. The graphics were nicer, the game had a great WWII feel. I love this game, but it is currently awful.

The devs added this "fix" everything Squad 2.0 that the community had very high hopes for. It was supposed to fix the matchmaker. The matchmaker was pretty bad, there were a lot of planes and tanks, but it was playable.

Squad 2.0 was added and everyone was happy, until they played the game. Squad 2.0 was a disaster, it made the existing problems much worse. They "fixed" the new system and... the matchmaker is awful. There are matches that are 6 v 8, all tanks except for 2 people. If this was a one time thing I wouldnt mind. The problem is that this happens to everyone. It doenst matter if you're in the middle of Europe or on the west coast.

The game is hard to enjoy. I dumped hours into this game last summer and loved the game. I can barely get through a 5 minute match. This isn't even fun to play anymore. Spend tons of time grinding to get a Thompson and then realize that there is no infantry to fight....

The devs also add way too many things the community never asked for. If they do add something the community asks for it is often poorly done.

I do not recommend this game. Until they fix this matchmaker there is no reason to play.

My advice to people considering playing this game:
DON'T (As of June 2016)

This game has a lot of potential.

However, it is ruined by the fact that the game is pay to win. Real life money can buy you just about anything and everything in the game or you could grind for hours for the next gun.

I started playing this game around June-July 2014. It is now June 23, 2016 and the game is still in Beta. Yet, if another developer were to release this game in its current state and removed the microtransactions people would pay good money for it.

This game is being developed by a bunch of lazy devs. protecting their ♥♥♥ with their "Beta" disclaimer and banking off the fact that as long as people are playing the game, someone won't want to grind for the next gun and will empty their wallet on the game.

Also, if you want your game to make it anywhere today you have to have at least add toggle aim option.

My advice to Reto-Moto: Get off your asses, take the game out of Beta and add some new feautures (like toggle aim, it can't be that hard, every other game under the sun has it, why doesn't yours?). And yes, I know it can be hard to make a game, I understand. But this post from July 2014 says "they talked about adding [toggle aim] earlier..." (Kirby) http://steamcommunity.com/app/227940/discussions/0/41973821259411967/ . It can't possibly take this long to add toggle aim can it?

Toggle aim is in fact a part of the game (Thank you Sparkle_Boy). However I still find that this game has too many pay-to-win aspects.

Thank you for your time.

Well, I gave it a go, and thought maybe, just maybe, the masses of reviews might be wrong, but they're really not.

Basic matchmaking is seemingly a no-go. Pitting low level players with basic gear against characters with top end gear and hours of experience? That seems like a recipe for bland, monotonous gameplay of getting killed over, and over again without a chance. inb4 get good, I know I suck, but at least pit me against other folk who suck, so we can eventually pick up some better skills and not suck.

Also, there's more grinding than any of the Tony Hawks games combined.

tl;dr dont it's bad

Before I start this, I'd like to make something very clear.

This game is bias

This game suffers from what War Thunder suffers; Bias Developers. It's obvious, if you play one game as the Germans, you are met against OP weapons, when you yourself only have underpowered-washed out versions of what are great weapons in real life. I'm not a Neo-Nazi, but if the Germans had the same amount of soldiers as the americans or soviets had, they'd win for sure. Their gear was much more advanced, but I'll let that slide. Anything for the sake of balance, right? Well, no. I think the Developers of this game think the Germans lost not because of stupid tactical descisions from ol' Uncle Adolf. No, I think Retro thinks the Germans lost due to ♥♥♥♥♥♥ gear. While yes, the American gear at the time rivaled the Germans, the soviets did not. Not by a long shot. However, update after update the Germans recieve nothing but not-needed nerfs. However, the reason why the Germans win the war is because of the players. Good Generals and soldiers always guarantee a German victory. However, in a normalt Assault game where each side has equal amount of soldiers, things get a bit more complicated then that. Only a select few of American tanks are actually light tanks, the rest are Medium tanks in disguise. The Russian weapons are rapid-action sniper rifles, and don't get me started on the sniper rifles. I've been killed in one shot by an American springfield so many times, I've gotten used to the "Torso Shot" text that appears on my screen. However, when I tried out my Kar98k, I found something. It's a 3 shotter, 2 when lucky. Seriously? You couldn't have the soul to atleast make the Kar98k realistic? The Mosin and Springfield bolt-action rifles can dominate the battlefield, but the Kar98k is just left there? It was the most effective Bolt actoin rifle at the time, yet it's merely a pistol that takes a while longer to load. The m1/m2 Carbine is also on my list of Cancers. It's like Retro took the AK-47 from CS:GO and just made it look like a carbine and put it into the game. I think if this game were $20, it would be more balanced. But no, Retro just wants money. But that's fair. The problem with most free 2 play games is that they encourage you to spend your money in that game to get things quicker, when a game that costs actual money would progress rather quickly. Either way, I'd recommend it, only if you can actually play. Being a noob + playing as the Germans is a guaranteed loss, no matter what.
