What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“When we started developing Heroes & Generals it was with the intention of creating a game for the gamers as much as for ourselves. The games we have been creating in the past (back in the IO Interactive days) have all been shrouded in secrecy until they were released and therefore always carried a number of things that players did not like but we were unable to change. Because it is the players that in the end plays the game we think they should have greater influence on the development.

Since the very early days of the project in 2011 (pre-alpha stage), we invited players in to play the game and have involved our community in the making of Heroes & Generals and listened to the feedback from them. So it's a natural extension of the way we develop Heroes & Generals, to also include the Steam Community, by going Early Access.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We're approaching the end of our Open Beta/Early Access phase, but it's still too soon for us to put a date on when we'll launch.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We're still tweaking, fixing bugs and adding new features to Heroes & Generals, and even though we feel that the game is now fun and quite stable, we still wish to get all things 'just right' before we call it 'launched'.

We do not plan to do a full server reset when the game launches.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We're in the end of our Open Beta phase, preparing for launch.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Heroes & Generals is Free2Play. We wish to create a healthy, solid and well-balanced game and community, where you can get a great experience playing the game, no matter how much money you spend! There is already an in-game economy in place, where you earn in-game credits and warfunds for being active in the game, by playing FPS-missions and/or handling Assault Teams.

You can also buy gold, which you can use to buy practically everything, usually it give you the option of buying stuff ‘early’, so you don’t need to grind that much. We also offer a Veteran Membership to accommodate wishes of having an all-inclusive package, where you earn xp, ribbon-xp, in-game credits and warfunds at an increased rate etc.

Prices are regularly being tweaked now in Open Beta/Early Access and we will most likely still tweak prices at and after launch.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We encourage the players to participate in discussions in our forum: http://forum.heroesandgenerals.com/

When you write feedback about the game, remember to try and explain your reasons. Constructive criticism will help us build a better game for you.”

AT Morale, Badges for Generals, new melee and MORE arrives with the New Vasilevsky Update

This brand-new update brings a lot of new features – assault team morale , a new melee system and more! The update is named Vasilevsky after the Soviet general Aleksandr Vasilevsky and here’s a quick overview of the new features we’ve added for you to enjoy!

New Features
Assault Team Morale
This update introduces Assault Team Morale. This adds a much requested layer of depth to the strategic war game. You now have to take your units’ morale into consideration before you commit them to attacks, and it makes defense-in-depth a more effective strategy. You can read more about the Assault Team Morale in this blog post.

Melee / Close Combat update
In this update we have reworked the melee / Close combat feature. It is now much easier to use and looks a LOT better. You can read more about how it works in this blog post.

Weapon Balance Pass
This build continues the weapon balancing and tweaks and adds a few new things, first of all the M1 Carbine is now available for regular US infantry with rank 12 of the Semi-Auto Ribbon. Soldiers wielding Pistols & Revolvers can now decide on how much ammunition they want to carry and a new powerful round for the American revolver is here.

New Ribbons & Combat Badges
Four new Combat Badges! Mechanic (faster vehicle repair), Charismatic Leader (Faster morale recovery), Battlefield Commander (Extra Morale), Logistic Expert (Increased AT movement speed). And two new ribbons: Battle Ribbon (Participate in WAR battles to earn experience. Highest award is given for victories) and War Ribbon (Participate on the winning side of a war to earn experience). – Other ribbon updates; See the full changelog (link below) for more details.

Other Changes
Here is a list of some additional features in the Vasilevsky update.
  • VFX update – Lots of tweaks and fixes for explosions, smoke, impact etc to both look better, and improve performance – more details in the upcoming Videolog! And the tech details are in the changelog
  • Forward Airfield tweaks based on player feedback, heatmaps and statistics, for more details check the changelog
  • Numerous UI updates to make everything easier to find and navigate.

Mobile Command
Mobile Command on Android has been updated to support the newly added Vasilevsky update. We, unfortunately, found some last minute bugs in the iOS version so that is delayed for a few days, apologies, but we decided not to postpone the entire update for this.

Changelog
We have added the changelog to the Steam forums here: Vasilevsky changelog

Awesome World War 2 game with lots of content to explore. Lots of intense and fun moments on the battlefield!

Physics in this game are awesome and very funny!

I experienced battles of mere minutes where team playing we quickly dominate our opponent and some longer than an hour and a half. Of course these don't amount for the majority of the battles.

I know FPS 1st timers progressing well few hours a day. Actually to quote the words of one "I might have the highest death rate but I have the best time".

Not just your typical first person shooter, a FPS with a real time strategy side to it on the war map plus MMO & RPG traits.

The 32 players per battle at the moment is ideal both performance wise (for servers & players) and to have various battles ongoing at the same time. Battles which make a difference towards the war continuously played by all 3 factions. Additionally there's real time participation involved on the strategy map from all factions moving assault teams through the map providing resources to every battle. Making every battle count and have a different amount of resources for teams which makes up for some glorious victories through seemingly impossible odds. If you're looking for reality there you have it, in war not all battles are fair. That said who's to say the number of players per battle won't change in future, although the game delivers as it is.

Various soldier classes to have fun with - infantry, recon, tank crewman, paratrooper, fighter pilot & general. A big variety of weapons, explosives & vehicles. You can actually ride a bicycle, jeep, motorbike, APC, armored recon vehicles, various grades of tanks (light, medium, heavy, destroyers) and planes.

With exception for general which is the highest rank all classes can pretty much be unlocked with ease depending on how much time you have in your hands.

Recon class takes a bit more to reach, has some expenses to it and with mods can 1 hit kill. Probably a good thing otherwise everyone would be up in the hills fairy hunting and tree hugging rather than helping the team play the objectives. It could be considered sort of a end-game luxury class although it's not hard to develop one.

All of the weapons, vehicles, soldier classes, ranks & uniforms have their own flavor on each of the 3 different factions right now. There will likely be more factions introduced in the future.

The vehicles differ between factions but that's not to say they are unbalanced, it's called asymmetrical balance. It would be very dull and no fun if all factions had everything the same. That said the game is still continuously being improved and this is not the final product although it's very polished and playable for a beta.

In addition unlocking vehicles is easy and not expensive. The ones that take the longest to unlock and are most expensive are probably the various tanks, some of the most pleasurable grind I experienced.

Massive maps with a variety of conditions like times when the sun is low, night, foggy, etc.

Moving between objectives you can go from cover to cover, flank, use your vehicle, use any bicycle or truck freely available through the map.

Freedom for a variety of play styles given the nature of the game - tactical and/or stealthy, etc, while also encouraging players to be objective oriented which is most rewarding for the player and team.

You can't go from prone to crouch, probably a good thing not to emphasize too much the camping of one place only without moving. Not to mention when sniping it's always good measure to rotate spots every so often to not be predictable and give away position.

Soldiers base salary depends on their level, can reach 3950 for a Colonel, granted for being on the battlefield for over 50% of the battle. Extra credits depend on battle participation. This means capturing & defending points, saving team mates, kills, etc. The use of explosives is expensive so that it remains as a valuable commodity to be used wisely. Although you will often see some using bazookas to kill infantry.

3 types of currency:
- Credits: Obtained every battle; Used to buy weapons, vehicles, to repair and maintain them.
- Warfunds: earned in-battle & by AT's; Used to buy assault teams, deploy and resupply them.
- Gold: earned (4) by finishing the 1st daily match and/or buying. Used to purchase anything.

I have not paid during the +1,272k hours I've played and I have the feeling there's still things left for me to explore.

Lots of fun grind without feeling like a p2w as it's entirely optional to spend and you can be competitive without paying a penny. Players who do spend essentially get one extra perk and a bit of a boost grinding - not something that makes massive difference. Some of the perks are not as essential as they would seem, specially depending on your style of play. Additionally there's give-aways frequently enough from free gold, to veteran membership & ribbon boosters.

The game developers provide regular updates which is great. The game is still in beta but doesn't feel like it at all.

Developers stream on Twitch every friday answering community questions and showing what they are working on, thus promoting a close relation with the community.

Find a clan as this game benefits immeasurably from voice chat taking it to a totally different experience. Team playing the objectives takes the game to another level. It makes the learning much faster, you get to know the best practices, what works and what does not - faster & based on other players experience. Not to mention it's a whole lot of fun.

It's a good thing the game doesn't have in-game voice chat otherwise there would be too much noise from random players, new players, kids, music, etc. I'd rather a low noise environment where I can enjoy radio silence so it's possible to focus on the game environment sounds and listen only to short bytes of valuable information.

There's various clans most of which have open teamspeak servers freely available and widely publicized for anyone to join. You can literally just hop in a channel and join the battle.

Is there space for improvement? Of course there always is. However the game is very playable and enjoyable as it is. I think it's an awesome game specially for the investment I've made on it - none.

No review can fully describe Heroes & Generals, you have to experience this.

Be prepared to grind every weapon for every soldier you make. You want to play tank? Cool, but you can't do anything else with that same soldier, not during or after the match. So what you do, you make another soldier. What's that, the second soldier doesn't have the ribbons needed for the weapons you grinded with your first soldier (who's now tanker)? Too bad, now you grind the same stuff again for your second soldier, just so you can play something else than tanker too. Oh you wan't to change weapons during match? Better make 3rd soldier, since it's good to have 1 Anti-tank soldier and 1 Anti-infantry soldier. Oh you have to grind all the ribbons and weapons for the 3rd soldier too. Nothing is shared in this game, you don't keep anything really. Which is why it pisses me off, because there isn't really alot of content or reason to play this game other than for "grinding stuff". There are only few maps in the game, and they get really stale really fast, especially once you realize how broken the game's faction balance is, and how the RTS system in the game is also very broken.

This is yet another "F2P game" with huge encouragement for you to pay for it, costing you alot more than what you would pay for a full retail game, like BF1942. Why are we required to grind same rifle for every individual soldier? Does that make the gameplay better? Or is it just a smoke screen to hide the fact that the game doesn't have content, and only thing to keep players hooked is the grinding? This game is like any other cash grab F2P game out there, very much comparable something like a MWO.

Free to play WW2 FPS Shooter akin to the older Battlefields. Quite enjoyable however is super grindy and is super unbalanced. Germany quite clearly destroys everyone in everything all the time. The Kar98k will one shot you in the torso. The MG42 outclasses the other faction's LMGs. They're motorcycle can fit 2 people on plus a 3rd firing a MG in a side car and a fully upgraded MP40 will 3 hit, fires its entire load in about 5 seconds, and is perfectly accurate up to 50m while hip firing.

Learning the mechanics of other classes such as Piloting is also extremely difficult as the game has no ingame tutorial or any sort of solo practice mode. The only way to learn is on the fly during a match. Expect to either crash into trees, the ground, other pilots, buildings or into way more experienced pilot's MG fire.

The worst thing by far has to be the match making (for staged battles) tho. Its quite clear that it just throws you into the most ready game with the 'ideal' ping levels. The amount of times I've been throw into 5 vs 5 player matches where one side is fresh out of level 3 (and tier 1) and the other side is level 10+ with fully upgraded MP40s only is staggering.

Want to just roam around with friends? You'll need at least 3 other people to form a squad, and you'll all have to be the same role. Someone wanna pilot while someone wanna drives a tank? You'll have to find someone else or try joining through the friend's list.

In my experience, joining through the Friend's list is absolutely terrible. You will wait up to 10 minutes waiting for a spot to join your friend's game which is always almost over by the time you get in. Perhaps it's different if you are like me and your solo stuff gets you put into games with little to no people. However my friend always seemed to join fairly full games. This could be because hes on the East Coast and I am on the West Coast.

Game's cash shop options are fairly balanced tho. And it really is fun when you get into a nicely balanced full game.

I am... average, at this game. I would get under 1 kdr mostly in battles, but it was still fun, since kdr doesn't matter. One match, i decided to follow around a player named ExMinka. He was recon, so he didn't run into everything like i did since i was infantry. I would follow him around and try to snipe, but it was hard since the rifle didn't work well with the fog. eventually, i got bored since he was skirting around a forest. As soon as i walked in, I was swarmed by ally scum. i took out 1 or 2, then was killed. Thank you for your wisdom, and when in doubt, the forest is never the answer. 10/10 can stalk russian snipers.

Let me list a few things that will frustrate the crap out of u if u play this game (so stay with me if its long).
1. Russians will use their anti-tank rifle as a rifle to kill infantry and (rarely to kill tanks), 1 shot kill every time baby ;)
2. Don't even show your feking face cuz its gonna get sniped stay behind the rock baby (stay.away.from.open.ground)
3. When fighting war battles, its a gamble on whether u will face an onslaught of enemy tanks when your team has none or to seal club an enemy team when your team is infested with tanks
4. Seal club, or be seal club (no fair fights in H&G war battles, so watch your virginity infantry :3)
5. Complete noobs ( if you're new) will get put against against veterans who been playing for over a year
6. Balanced battles MM is slow as a constipated man taking a ♥♥♥♥ (and even after the 2 minute 30 second wait, the noob clubbing doesn't end :D
7. On the war map, you're going to turn into a desperate animal when you are looking for a battle thats not full, has the units your soldiers can fight in, and has spawn slots left (OH OH I FOUND A BATTLE *JOINS*, BUT WAIT NO ONE ELSE IS FEKING JOINING IT CUZ ITS A FEKING ONE SIDED SEAL CLUB MATCH)
8 (THE MOST IMPORTANT POINT). The war battles, where its a fair fight, both sides have a few hundred lives, lasts 20-40 minutes, a few tanks on both sides here and there (that don't sit a few hundred feet away sniping anything that moves with a big old fat HE shell), both sides have an equal amount of veterans and noobs, both teams are actually being proactive and moving in to seize points instead of camping a field and sniping. These battles that make the game a real pleasure to play are a great rarity, so your lucky to get 1 or 2 in a 5 hour session
9. BUT WAIT, THERES MORE :D! Everything, and i mean, everything costs a fortune. Ammunition for you guns (don't even get me started on anti-tank ammunition, fire 5 shots from your panzershrek and your broke), repairing your weapons and vehicles, grenades, U NAME IT, ITS EXPENSIVE!

All in all, i cannot recommend this game to anyone else, if battles weren't so feking broken and inconsistent i might have recommended it but alas, THEIR STILL BROKEN AND INCONSISTENT.

Think of it like this -

Germans = Advanced Warfare
USA = A couple of kids having a birthday party at a paintball arena

Uneven teams. Easily spawn trapped. Weak guns if you're a low level. Buggy.

Edit: Did I mention it was P2W? I didn't mention it was P2W.

This game is so much fun to play with friends until the point where they add tanks in matches (rank 3 and above, roughly 2 hours into the game). It completely ruined the game for me and my friends.

Before you get to the tanks:

With tanks

At first i would like to say i used to play this game before it was available on Steam. I've spent over 100+ hours in this game.
It started as a cool concept but unfortunately it turned out to be bad. First of all I really wanted this game to be good (and in some cases it is) i love concept of WW2 FPS.
Unfortunately there are tons of problems!
Game is clearly pay to win. The amount of money you earn after a battle is so little it barely is enough for fixing and ammmunition. So in the end it's incredible grind fest to get a single weapon in this game (prizes of weapons are ridicolous).
Secondly the level progress is also painfully slow. Recently they changed lvl exp caps and it's almost impossible for newbies to reach high levels (beside no-lifing or paying ofc)
Moreover there is another problem!!! So you work your way to the 9th lvl or so and want to become sniper (all in all you were one-shoted so many times by high lvl, full gear players so you want revange) so you pay for becoming sniper AND THAN you have to buy a SNIPER RIFLE for like 150k ingame money. What THE ♥♥♥♥ is that. You paid to be a sniper and you have to additionally buy a sniper rifle in order to play it!?!?!? and 150k is a loooot of money if you don't wnat to pay real money.

AND the balance of the game... even in staged battles which were supposed to be well "staged" and equal to every side. You end up being slaughtered buy 5 tanks when there is no tank-driver player in your squad!!! or you're constantly bombed by pilots cuz there is nobody to take it down.

Lastly... optimalization is a joke. My PC can easily run BF4 on high with decent fps ( close to 60). Not this game. And I'm pretty sure it looks way worse and mechanics are simpler...

ALL IN ALL there are some positives. Some matches are fun, When teams are balanced it's a satisfactory game. But there are just waay to many bugs, P2W mechanics and bad optimalization.

Just don't waste your time!!!

Such an obvious pay2win game. (or you waste half of your life for leveling up)
- No anticheat;
- No balance;
- No tank limits;
- More than 10uero for useless premium per month.
Play till 3rd level then suck a bunch of male reproductive organs or delete it and buy Red Orchestra 2.

Great game, however the lag is horrible when it strikes, and you freeze and cannot do anything. And all can say what they wan about it being online and uncheatable, but it's not true, too many cheaters in this game. Like the rest of them, great for a while, but then the game is destroyed by hackers. Once again, how about valve? anti cheeat punkbuster and everyone else who is supposed to be kicking hackers out and banning them from the use of Steam and other gaming platforms?? getting old already.

It is very fun. Has its moments. the enemy team will always be a bunch of call of duty stoopid idiots who lack the brain capasity to hide from bullets. It is not pay to win. it is pay to get all those guns that you want. if you pay to get all those guns that you want (cough cougg, Machineguns) you will soon realise that they suck and you spent your lifes savings on the worst weapon ever. just use a rifle ok. dont spend money on these.
