Castle Story patch 0.3.2 is ready, with a small new feature.

Hello everyone, we’ve been hard at work again today to fix some of the more pressing issues, such as survival bugs and crashes, and implementing new features to build onto the 0.3.0 release.

We’re happy to introduce a new feature for Big Island. You will now spawn randomly on one of the island’s many crystal everytime you start a new game. This will help you explore every meter of the new island’s massive square kilometer of land, and provide more replayability per map. We’re really eager to see what you will build in it!

We also want to make clear that the new AI is only available in the sandbox map “Bricktron V2 Demo”. Every other map is still using the old bricktron AI. We’re sorry for the confusion this has caused for some of you.

Here are the bugs fixed in this patch:
  • Fixed memory leak cause by tree meshes.
  • Fixed memory leak caused by the pie menu.
  • Fixed a bad save version in the tutorial, preventing to load it properly.
  • Fixed numerous issues with survival mode saves.
  • Fixed an issue on Survival where Bricktrons wouldn’t free their position when dying.
  • Fixed corruptron’s spawn rate doubling after a save/load issue.
  • Improved the volumetric properties of the crystal.
  • Fixed the door’s debris spawning at a bad angle.
  • Fixed corruptrons assigning themselves to the wrong voxels when moving.
  • Various small optimisations behind the scenes.

Also note that this update will break your saves. If you desire to port them to be compatible with this patch, we published a guide on the forums: http://steamcommunity.com/app/227860/discussions/0/626329820898417814/

Thanks again for all your feedback and bug reports, we still got some fixes and features coming, so stay tuned!

  • Now preventing dynamic objects from falling through the ground when loading a game.
  • Hp of the Crystal is now properly saved and loaded.
  • Prevented the resized radius of the Lumber Task to be deleted on load.
  • Fixed a race condition with the Old Bricktron AI, where multiple Bricktrons destroying an object at the same time could end-up broken.
  • Fixed horizontal log blueprints being saved with the wrong orientation.
  • Fixed some teleportation issue on the Lumber Task with the New Bricktron.
  • Fixed multiple Anti Blueprints bugs on loading a game.
  • Fixed planks being always buildable.
  • Grayed options not yet supported by the new AI.
  • Fixed missing cursors when placing and removing blueprints.
  • Fixed anti blueprints not appearing right away on terrain when holding Shift.
  • Fixed flickering when hovering a beacon while moving it around at the same time.
  • Fixed the bricktron's pie menu remaining stuck on the mouse.

We’re still working hard on other issues, such as survival bugs. You can expect another patch very soon.
Thanks for all your feedback and bug reports, it really helped us, keep them coming! Enjoy!

About This Game

Castle Story is a creative voxel-based strategy game in which you can build castles one brick at a time using an army of little characters called Bricktrons.

Your goal will be to explore a vast landscape full of mysteries and dangers, and defend your castle against onslaughts of hostile creatures and possibly other players.

The world of Castle Story takes place on flying islands, high above an infinite ocean. The islands are made of voxels, cubes made of various elements, which means you can dig, carve and build anything you can imagine in the landscape. Digging underground to gather resources, stacking bricks on top of each other to build a wall or even tunnelling through a mountain is all possible and even necessary to keep your Bricktrons safe.

Carefully designing your castle not only requires creativity and imagination, but thanks to pathfinding AI and physics simulations, Castle Story has layers of strategy and depth on top of an otherwise free-form sandbox experience.

Castle Story will be released for Windows & Mac (with possible Linux support once Unity4 is released).

Key Features

  • Build any structure you can imagine! Using 2x1 blocks, create structures that are not only good-looking, but also functional. Your Bricktrons need to be able to navigate your castle to build it and to keep the monsters out!
  • Physics! Watch a tower crumble to the ground realistically when its foundations can no longer support it. The entire world obeys to the laws of physics which means that you need to build cleverly so your castle can withstand attacks from projectiles and explosives.
  • Sandbox! Build a huge sprawling fortress, a single impenetrable bunker or a network of underground tunnels. The choice is yours. Castle Story rewards imagination and ingenuity.
  • Strategy! Command your Bricktrons as they build your castle brick by brick. Manage the way they work, what resources they gather, and the places they explore. Use your resources to build weapons and armor for your Bricktrons and all kinds of upgrades for your castle.
  • Combat! Using shields, swords, bows and lots more, your Bricktrons can defend themselves against the hostile creatures inhabiting the world of Castle Story. Lead your Bricktrons through tough fights, and use your wits to gain an advantage. You can even build catapults to rain destruction on your foes!
  • Magic! The world of Castle Story is permeated with all kinds of magic. Discover resources with magical auras and learn to mix them to create effects. Explore strange places and find mysterious artifacts left behind by unknown civilizations.

Early Access Review
This game cost me $20 USD or so, and gave me 113 hours of enjoyment. That's over five hours of play per dollar -- certainly more than I've gotten out of some AAA titles that cost me three times that much. It was a fun little game.

So why the thumbs down? Well, because despite being a somewhat *fun* game, it's not a *complete* game. And at this point it is not clear to me that the game will EVER be complete.

The devs posted this disclaimer long ago: http://www.sauropodstudio.com/steam-early-access-disclaimer/ stating the features that work and those that are planned. The disclaimer is pretty accurate, it doesn't lie about what's working and what's not. The problem is that the "what's working" list has not grown by a single item since I bought the game -- litterally the ONLY feature of any note that has been added was a pause function -- which would have been greatly appreciated if I hadn't worn out the gameplay many months ago -- but they haven't made any visible progress towards that complete feature set they said they were planning.

Some of this is understandable. It's a young studio, this is their first game and the developers are less experienced than those on a lot of other games. They made some early mistakes and had to refactor the code base, which took a long time. Normally, refactoring (while frustrating for end users because it consumes time with no new features) is useful because it reduces future bugs and makes implementing new features later much easier. But these things only matter if you RELEASE UPDATES after the refactoring.

As I said, this is the studio's first game, and as you can see it's not going super well. It's entirely possible that they are out of money and about to go bankrupt for all I know. So it's impossible to say when or even if this game will get another update, or if a hypothetical update would even contain any significant improvements.

So while it really boils down to the typical early access mantra of "Only pay for it if you are happy with the CURRENT state of the game", and while the current state of the game WAS worth the money I paid for it, I can't really recommend this game because I know that most people are less easy to please than I am, and want a finished product. This game may never be that.

How many early-access games have been abandonded? Towns? Spacebase? Castle Story? I'm sure there are tons more. I HATE how steam allows them to be sold still. My patience and willingness to support for early games has been used up. I wish there was a way to get my money back for those crap titles!!!

Utterly unplayable. There's been little to no progress since its Early Access release and I only wish there was some way to make them accountable and force them to return the money made on the sales of their product. This game is nothing short of a con.

Sadly, I will have to also join the crowd of "Do not buy" reviews. If the developers get their act together and release an update, I'll reconsider.

Worth the Wait
This game has so much potentional! When I first saw the game on steam I was immediately interested. The only problem with the game is that it is still in early access. This recent update has given me hope that the devs are not going to abandon this game. Bugs and all the game is still enjoyable. If you live controling people and playing sandbox games, than this is definetly for you!

Please note this game IS still in beta, so it won't be perfect.

Game showed a lot of promise during Kickstarter. However actual development post kickstater has been minimal. Haven't played more than eough to get frustrated and uninstall every few months. I have moved on to other fort building games.

This is before the Holiday update, but the game is enjoyable. Don't fixate on developers or lack of updates, enjoy building a giant freaking castle and defending it from moving rock people. Ask a kid about minecraft he'll talk for an hour, ask him about Notch and he'll shrug.

Currently it is not playable due to a horrible AI. Bricktons get stuck every minute and stop working until you assign new tasks via trial and error.
A new AI is in the making (regarding the developer posts) but until this proves sufficient don't buy it except you believe in the devs very strongly

I love the ideal of this game. The AI is not so great but with time hopefully it gets alot better. I also dont like the wave thing on survival. I wish the enemy would build castles as well and attack. maybe have different enemys as well like tree people. but over not a bad game i enjoy playing it just wish there was some improvements to the AI and survival was a little different more like Age Of Empire

So far, the game is coming along fairly well. While it's not finished and the updates aren't very steady, it seems to have a lot of potential. I wouldn't recommend it at present, but given enough time I could see it becoming absolutely fantastic.

After playing the latest patch (The one claiming to fix the unit pathfinding issues) I can honestly say I am giving up on this game. It is a great concept and I truely hope the developers see it through but after their boasts that they fixed the pathfinding issues I can honestly say that it is clear they did not test this patch for more than 15 minutes because after about this long playing you will spend more time trying to fix anything that causes your units to get hung up. Which is just about anything. If the developers actually fix this pathing issues add new gameplay content to this game (something they have not really done in at least a year.... ( well excluding the halloween unit skins -__- )) I will gladly change and rewrite this review.

this game honestly has a lot of potential, it has a great concept and what looks like to be great gameplay but unfortunatley this game is unplayble. The A.I. in this game makes you want to kill yourself and the fact that the game developers haven't changed anything about this game makes me very mad. Absoutley zero updates.

TL;DR: A.I. is trash but the game has lots of potential.
