Halloween is at our doorstep!

Like last year we did put some Halloween thematic object in Castle Story!

What is different:

- We did change the Lantern to a Jack O'Lantern
- The souls are now little Ghosts
- Zombietrons have invaded the Survival Mode!
- We put back the Witch Hat for the Archer
- We put back the Pumpkin Helmet for the Knight

A little fix on the Server that wasn't able to start on 32 bit Operating Systems.

Hope you enjoy!

About This Game

Castle Story is a creative voxel-based strategy game in which you can build castles one brick at a time using an army of little characters called Bricktrons.

Your goal will be to explore a vast landscape full of mysteries and dangers, and defend your castle against onslaughts of hostile creatures and possibly other players.

The world of Castle Story takes place on flying islands, high above an infinite ocean. The islands are made of voxels, cubes made of various elements, which means you can dig, carve and build anything you can imagine in the landscape. Digging underground to gather resources, stacking bricks on top of each other to build a wall or even tunnelling through a mountain is all possible and even necessary to keep your Bricktrons safe.

Carefully designing your castle not only requires creativity and imagination, but thanks to pathfinding AI and physics simulations, Castle Story has layers of strategy and depth on top of an otherwise free-form sandbox experience.

Castle Story will be released for Windows & Mac (with possible Linux support once Unity4 is released).

Key Features

  • Build any structure you can imagine! Using 2x1 blocks, create structures that are not only good-looking, but also functional. Your Bricktrons need to be able to navigate your castle to build it and to keep the monsters out!
  • Physics! Watch a tower crumble to the ground realistically when its foundations can no longer support it. The entire world obeys to the laws of physics which means that you need to build cleverly so your castle can withstand attacks from projectiles and explosives.
  • Sandbox! Build a huge sprawling fortress, a single impenetrable bunker or a network of underground tunnels. The choice is yours. Castle Story rewards imagination and ingenuity.
  • Strategy! Command your Bricktrons as they build your castle brick by brick. Manage the way they work, what resources they gather, and the places they explore. Use your resources to build weapons and armor for your Bricktrons and all kinds of upgrades for your castle.
  • Combat! Using shields, swords, bows and lots more, your Bricktrons can defend themselves against the hostile creatures inhabiting the world of Castle Story. Lead your Bricktrons through tough fights, and use your wits to gain an advantage. You can even build catapults to rain destruction on your foes!
  • Magic! The world of Castle Story is permeated with all kinds of magic. Discover resources with magical auras and learn to mix them to create effects. Explore strange places and find mysterious artifacts left behind by unknown civilizations.

Early Access Review
Overall, I do enjoy this game, and probably had more anticipation for this than any other early access I've followed. So why do I not recommend this? Bullets:

Cons:
- No updates! Years have passed and the game is still in a less functional state than their fictional tech demo.
- Current state is playable, but quickly reveals how broken it is. Terrible AI, limited functoinality of game mechanics, limited... game.
- Devs hate the community. Well probably not hate, but this is the crux of it. There appears to be absolutely no effort being made to update the game in an actual and meaningful way. When pressed for answers from the community as to when we can expect something new, the same canned response of 'we don't give deadlines' is the answer. That's fine after a few months, but not after a few years. The first major red light for me when nearly a years worth of dev updates were about how they spent a month and a half working on a new sound effect for an object that isn't even in the game, or here's a new soundtrack I've been listening to, or "Hey, we're going on vacation!". While glaring issues remain untouched and unaddressed. PR people are hired to quell criticism and silence community dissent.
-Devs are in over their heads. A lot of people will call them theives, or scammers, I don't see it as that. They are still around. They are still 'working'. But it really seems like they've all retreated to their little comfort zones, and feverishly work on silly little things like a sound effect to the exclusion of actual game problems. Why would they do this? Well, it seems pretty clear that they have realized they cannot handle those bigger problems, and just seem to be hoping they'll fix themselves tomorrow. Their production efforts are terribly misguided, and no one seems able to get the train back on the tracks. This is the main reason I think the community has given up on them. There are gracious ways out of this connundrum for them, but they seem completely unwilling to compromise, admit their shortcomings, and work with the community. For that they have failed utterly at making a game. A community college degree does not a game dev make.

Pros:
- Build a big castle block by block, watch a nearly good physics engine crush it.
- If you give them enough money to keep the lights on, you get a t-shirt or something, someday.

The games hasn't had any significant update over a year and it has a small amount of features and a ton of bugs that are really irritating. Also the developers will treat you like crap. They have no respect at all. The game looked promising at the start but I guess it's dead now. Do NOT BUY IT . Seriously, never, unless it gets finished somehow which will probably not gonna happen. EVER.

This game is the worst example of early access I've seen so far.
Other developers manage weekly or monthly updates with real new content, improvements and/or bug fixes; so far all this game got in the last year is a tutorial and a pause function.

Kickstarter: Made the game with all its buggy features and people thought it had amazing potential...
1st Year: Hey guys we've finally added a new system that makes the sound work :)
2nd Year: So today we finally got the save button into place, hope you guys like it
3rd year: Here's a video on what we've been doing in our studio, which has nothing to do with the game :)

I do not recommend this game to anyone.. Period

This is a perfect example of an alpha game with an inexperianced team. Fun game, but no updates whatso ever. But oh, atleast they offered pumpkin hats for your little warriors and audio fixes right? This game is fun but the team does nothing but sit on their ♥♥♥.

Do you want to be involved into the evolution of our project?
Are you the type of gamers that don't mind having to deal with a broken version of a game?
Then Castle Story's early access is NOT for you! Do NOT join us today and STOP sending us your bugs report and feedbacks. Because we won't release updates anyway!

Currently as of now, I would 110% recommend this game to no one. Do not support it, or buy it. No real progress has been made ever since their kickstarter. It does have a really cool concept, but it is not going anywhere.

TL;DR
Do NOT buy. This early access is as good as dead. Wait for it to be alive once more if still interested.

DO. NOT. BUY. THIS. GAME.

Just go to their website and read the forums. These guys are the biggest trolls.

They've hade ALOT of complains from their (now very small) "fan base" where they are asking for a better AI. No updates for two years now.. and all of a sudden an update!..
But the only thing they updated was a halloween theme in the game. No better AI, no new monsters, nothing, just a halloween theme.

Im going to try to report this game somehow and get my money back, and if that doesn't work out i will try to help people save 20 bucks and buy some other game. Because they are spent much better elsewhere, on ant game really.

-1 / 10, would not recommend.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!

And here is why:

Backstory
I supported them on kickstarter when it became available and have followed their progress for a long time now.
What I see now just keeps disappointing me and I already lost hope in this "chaos" of a project. Everytime I saw steam updating this game I played it for a bit but didn't see any game changes. The only thing I see everytime is the hopeless same mess again and agian, game start lagging (and I have a pretty high spec system), bricktrons getting stuck, glitches that make resources unavailable, etc.

Positive
  • Potential

That's it. I can't say anything good about this game even if I want to and still hope I will be able to.

Negative
  • Performance (after 3 years it normally must have been fixed)
  • Content (as good as none)
  • Gameplay (is their even any gameplay except for glitches and bugs that make the game unplayable - remember we are 3 year after the kickstarter)
  • Development (are they even doing anything, or just spending or money ?!)

These developers made me sceptical about Early Access and now got me even to the point I don't buy anthing in Early Access unless it's almost finished or the deveolpers provide weekly updates and detailed information what Sauropod promissed but never delivered. This concept was great and I believed in it, but Sauropod just flushed it down the toilet.

I will update my review if they ever bring something out that drastically changes the game. (But I don't think this is going to happen after 3 years)

DO NOT BUY! Sauropod studios are run by a very small group of inexperienced, unapologetic jerks. If you bought in to this game through kickstarter or early access, they will treat you like crap on the forums.

The only thing Castle Story had going for it was the amazing work the Community Manager: Box, was doing. Box would try to give information to you straight, without breaking any of the company rules, which was very difficult to do. Box would always try to break information down to the community and calm people down who were angry about any of the situations. In the end, the company would give Box misleading information and then blame him for giving out any information to the community.

One of the primary developers for Castle Story is a dev named Thierry. Thierry has a tendency to berate the community for asking questions. On multiple occasions I've read post by him calling out individuals and virtually yelling at them, or the community in general and blaming them for being impatient. The game has been in development for years now, and there has literally been no visual improvement in over a year.

Originally there were weekly updates on what was going on, with an occasional skipping of a week or two. Now there are monthly updates on what is going on. I take that back. There are monthly video blogs about things nobody cares about. These "monthly" video blogs have only made it up to the 3rd blog before they seem to have stopped posting them. It has been six weeks since the last video blog, which is probably a good thing, because they're useless information anyway.

TL;DR, STAY AWAY FROM THIS GAME. The devs will treat you like crap, and blame the community for asking too many questions, the game has been stagnant for over a year. The forums have started seeing posts deleted, and users are getting banned for giving out useful information, and asking real questions respectfully.

I bought this game because the concept looked cool and the game kind of fun. While I still think this could have been a great game, the developers have shown they are incapable of properly building a game. There are so many bugs that make building anything of scale impossible.

My only hope now is that some other real developers take over this game and turn it into something great, but until that time (if it ever happens), stay away.

Game had such potential but in short the devs don't even care about supporting this game. The only thing they will support is your money when you buy the game, that's it. Unfortunate but the game is buggy, nearly never updates and when it does something else breaks. Beside being an alpha, it's a poor excuse for making a quick cash grab from the community. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME, do not feed the hungry devs.

I advise agaisnt buying this game (at least in its current state). It has been over 2 years since I purchased this game and there has been no new content added aside from temporary holiday bits. I suggest waiting for the full game if it ever happens. Over the course of the last 2 years, Castle Story has just recently claimed it will add a new map. Yes, 2 years for a map (and it isn't even available as of writing this). This game has potential, but the developers are not delivering. To help understand, here is a complete list of what has been accomplished with the game (minus bug fixes and balancing) for the past 2 years. Note, Everything on these lists are taken directly from each company's respective patch notes and version histories. I compare Castle Story to KSP and Prison Architect to quantify it. See Spoiler below. I can't help but feel Sauropod is following a non-production business model.

Castle Story is a "choose your own adventure" with one possible outcome: The developer continues to offer excuses for years as to why they are incapable of finishing their damn game, your money is wasted and you feel a burning sense of shame come over you for funding yet another failed early access title, the end.
